Selected AbstractsImportance of the Straits of Florida spawning ground to Atlantic sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans)FISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHY, Issue 6 2009DAVID E. RICHARDSON Abstract Much of the uncertainty in managing highly migratory pelagic species results from the scarcity of fisheries-independent data relevant to determining long-term trends in abundance, migratory movements, and the relative importance of different spawning grounds. To address these issues, we used an ichthyoplankton-based method to quantify the overall level of spawning of sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) in the Straits of Florida (SF). We estimated that during the 2 years (2003,2004) of the study, 4.60 × 1011 sailfish eggs and 4.49 × 1011 blue marlin eggs were produced on an annual basis in this region. These egg production values, when combined with estimates of annual fecundity for each species and the most recent stock assessment estimate of total biomass, indicate that about 2.1% of Western Atlantic sailfish spawning and 1.6% of Atlantic-wide blue marlin spawning occurs in the SF. Additionally, pop-up satellite tags deployed on sailfish at the start of the spawning season revealed their short residency times in the SF, suggesting that a large (,13%) transient portion of the sailfish population is responsible for the SF egg production. Overall, this study provides a critically needed fisheries-independent method of quantifying spatial and temporal trends in the abundance of highly migratory species. The application of this methodology in the SF indicated that above-average levels of sailfish and blue marlin spawning occur in this area and, possibly more importantly, that the SF is a migratory bottleneck for these species. [source] Effects of acidification on the breeding ecology of a stream-dependent songbird, the Louisiana waterthrush (Seiurus motacilla)FRESHWATER BIOLOGY, Issue 11 2008ROBERT S. MULVIHILL Summary 1.,We compared breeding ecology of the Louisiana waterthrush (Seiurus motacilla) on acidified and circumneutral streams in the Appalachian Highlands of Southwestern Pennsylvania from 1996 to 2005. 2.,Headwater streams impacted by acid mine drainage and/or acidic precipitation showed reduced pH (range 4.5,5.5) compared to four circumneutral streams (pH c. 7). Acid-sensitive taxa, including most mayflies (Ephemeroptera), were almost completely absent from acidified streams, whereas several acid-tolerant taxa, especially stonefly (Plecoptera) genera Leuctra and Amphinemura, were abundant. 3.,Louisiana waterthrush breeding density (c. 1 territory km,1) was significantly reduced on acidified streams compared to circumneutral streams (>2 territories km,1). Territories on acidified streams were almost twice as long as on circumneutral streams. Territories usually were contiguous on circumneutral streams, but they were often disjunct on acidified streams. Breeding density declined on one acidified stream that we studied over a 10-year period. 4.,Clutch initiation was significantly delayed on acidified streams, on average by 9 days in comparison to circumneutral streams, and first-egg dates were inversely related to breeding density. Birds nesting along acidified streams laid smaller clutches, and nestlings had shorter age-adjusted wing lengths. Stream acidity had no effect on nest success or annual fecundity (fledglings/female). However, the number of young fledged km,1 was nearly twice as high on circumneutral streams as on acidified streams. 5.,Acidified streams were characterized by a younger, less site-faithful breeding population. Individuals were less likely to return multiple years to breed, allowing inexperienced breeders to settle on acidified streams. Pairing success was lower on acidified streams, and we observed four cases of waterthrushes emigrating from territories on acidified streams to nearby circumneutral streams in the following year. 6.,We conclude that acidified headwaters constitute lower quality habitat for breeding Louisiana waterthrush. However, breeding birds can apparently compensate for reduced prey resources to fledge young on acidified streams by increasing territory size, foraging in peripheral non-acidified areas, and by provisioning young with novel prey. [source] Age-related change in breeding performance in early life is associated with an increase in competence in the migratory barn swallow Hirundo rusticaJOURNAL OF ANIMAL ECOLOGY, Issue 5 2007JAVIER BALBONTÍN Summary 1We investigated age-related changes in two reproductive traits (laying date and annual fecundity) in barn swallows Hirundo rustica L. using a mixed model approach to di-stinguish among between- and within-individual changes in breeding performance with age. 2We tested predictions of age-related improvements of competence (i.e. constraint hypothesis) and age-related progressive disappearance of poor-quality breeders (i.e. selection hypothesis) to explain age-related increase in breeding performance in early life. 3Reproductive success increased in early life, reaching a plateau at middle age (e.g. at 3 years of age) and decreasing at older age (> 4 years). Age-related changes in breeding success were due mainly to an effect of female age. 4Age of both female and male affected timing of reproduction. Final linear mixed effect models (LME) for laying date included main and quadratic terms for female and male age, suggesting a deterioration in reproductive performance at older age for both males and females. 5We found evidence supporting the constraints hypothesis that increases in competence within individuals, with ageing being the most probable cause of the observed increase in breeding performance with age in early life. Two mechanisms were implicated: (1) advance in male arrival date with age provided middle-aged males with better access to mates. Yearling males arrived later to the breeding grounds and therefore had limited access to high-quality mates. (2) Breeding pairs maintaining bonds for 2 consecutive years (experienced pairs) had higher fecundity than newly formed inexperienced breeding pairs. 6There was no support for the selection hypothesis because breeding performance was not correlated with life span. 7We found a within-individual deterioration in breeding and migratory performance (arrival date) in the oldest age-classes consistent with senescence in these reproductive and migratory traits. [source] Spawning of a Captive Population of California Sheephead, Semicossyphus pulcherJOURNAL OF THE WORLD AQUACULTURE SOCIETY, Issue 1 2007Dave Jirsa This study represents the first detailed description of spawning and patterns of egg production in a captive population of California sheephead. In March 2004, females ranged in size from 369 to 430 mm total length (TL) and weighed 0.8,1.5 kg. Males ranged in size from 475 to 510 mm TL and weighed 1.7,2.3 kg. Spawning began in April and continued daily through September and then sporadically through October. Egg production ranged from 1000 to 375,000 eggs/d, with an average of 130,000 eggs/d. Egg production peaked in May at 222,000 eggs/d and decreased throughout the remainder of the season. Total annual fecundity from this group was 1,942,000 eggs/kg female body weight. Egg viability ranged from 0 to 80% with an average of 50%. Viability showed a general increase at the beginning of the season and a decrease at the end of the season. Eggs were 0.9,1.0 mm in diameter and hatched in approximately 48 h at 18,19 C. Hatch rates showed a general decline throughout the season. This study shows that California sheephead will spawn readily in captivity providing thousands of viable eggs daily and lays the groundwork for culture of this species. [source] Measuring temporal variation in reproductive output reveals optimal resource allocation to reproduction in the northern grass lizard, Takydromus septentrionalisBIOLOGICAL JOURNAL OF THE LINNEAN SOCIETY, Issue 2 2007XIANG JI We measured the reproductive output of Takydromus septentrionalis collected over 5 years between 1997 and 2005 to test the hypothesis that reproductive females should allocate an optimal fraction of accessible resources in a particular clutch and to individual eggs. Females laid 1,7 clutches per breeding season, with large females producing more, as well as larger clutches, than did small females. Clutch size, clutch mass, annual fecundity, and annual reproductive output were all positively related to female size (snout,vent length). Females switched from producing more, but smaller eggs in the first clutch to fewer, but larger eggs in the subsequent clutches. The mass-specific clutch mass was greater in the first clutch than in the subsequent clutches, but it did not differ among the subsequent clutches. Post-oviposition body mass, clutch size, and egg size showed differing degrees of annual variation, but clutch mass of either the first or the second clutch remained unchanged across the sampling years. The regression line describing the size,number trade-off was higher in the subsequent clutch than in the first clutch, but neither the line for first clutch, nor the line for the second clutch varied among years. Reproduction retarded growth more markedly in small females than in large ones. Our data show that: (1) trade-offs between size and number of eggs and between reproduction and growth (and thus, future reproduction) are evident in T. septentrionalis; (2) females allocate an optimal fraction of accessible resources in current reproduction and to individual eggs; and (3) seasonal shifts in reproductive output and egg size are determined ultimately by natural selection. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 91, 315,324.
