Selected AbstractsSeismic risk assessments and GIS technology: applications to infrastructures in the Friuli,Venezia Giulia region (NE Italy)EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING AND STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS, Issue 11 2003Raffaella Codermatz Abstract This paper illustrates the seismic risk preliminary estimates of two different groups of structures located on the territory of the Friuli,Venezia Giulia region (NE Italy) : the first group includes some special industrial plants, and the second group includes bridges and tunnels belonging to the regional highway network. The part of the study on special industrial plants tries to evaluate the degree of expected damage, taking into account their structural typology and ground shaking expressed in terms of macroseismic intensity. The second part of the study is an application of the HAZUS methodology to the tunnels and bridges of a highway network: the combination of expected ground shaking and the construction characteristics lead to very different risk levels, especially when considering the bridges. The resulting damage levels to bridges and tunnels are still only indicative because of the fragility curves used in the evaluations: they were developed for existing bridge and tunnel structural typologies in the U.S.A. Moreover, both examples show the power of GIS technology in storing, elaborating, and mapping spatial data. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] A REGIONAL ECONOMY, LAND USE, AND TRANSPORTATION MODEL (RELU-TRAN©): FORMULATION, ALGORITHM DESIGN, AND TESTING,JOURNAL OF REGIONAL SCIENCE, Issue 3 2007Alex Anas ABSTRACT RELU is a dynamic general equilibrium model of a metropolitan economy and its land use, derived by unifying in a theoretically valid way, models developed by one of the authors [Anas (1982), Anas,Arnott (1991, 1997), Anas,Kim (1996), Anas,Xu (1999)]. RELU equilibrates floor space, land and labor markets, and the market for the products of industries, treating development (construction and demolition), spatial interindustry linkages, commuting, and discretionary travel. Mode choices and equilibrium congestion on the highway network are treated by unifying RELU with the TRAN algorithm of stochastic user equilibrium [Anas,Kim (1990)]. The RELU-TRAN algorithm's performance for a stationary state is demonstrated for a prototype consisting of 4-building, 4-industry, 4-labor-type, 15-land-use-zone, 68-link-highway-network version of the Chicago MSA. The algorithm solves 656 equations in a special block-recursive convergent procedure by iterations nested within loops and loops within cycles. Runs show excellent and smooth convergence from different starting points, so that the number of loops within successive cycles continually decreases. The tests also imply a numerically ascertained unique stationary equilibrium solution of the unified model for the calibrated parameters. [source] Bayesian estimation of traffic lane stateINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ADAPTIVE CONTROL AND SIGNAL PROCESSING, Issue 1 2003Ivan Nagy Abstract Modelling of large transportation systems requires a reliable description of its elements that can be easily adapted to the specific situation. This paper offers mixture model as a flexible candidate for modelling of such element. The mixture model describes particular and possibly very different states of a specific system by its individual components. A hierarchical model built on such elements can describe complexes of big city communications as well as railway or highway networks. Bayesian paradigm is adopted for estimation of parameters and the actual component label of the mixture model as it serves well for the subsequent decision making. As a straightforward application of Bayesian method to mixture models leads to infeasible computations, an approximation is applied. For normal stochastic variations, the resulting estimation algorithm reduces to a simple recursive weighted least squares. The elementary modelling is demonstrated on a model of traffic flow state in a single point of a roadway. The examples for simulated as well as real data show excellent properties of the suggested model. They represent much wider set of extensive tests made. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
