Selected AbstractsInfluence of PAR and UV-A in Determining Plant Sensitivity and Photomorphogenic Responses to UV-B Radiation ,,PHOTOCHEMISTRY & PHOTOBIOLOGY, Issue 4 2004Donald T. Krizek ABSTRACT The role of photosynthetically active radiation (400-700 nm) (PAR) in modifying plant sensitivity and photomorphogenic responses to ultraviolet-B (280,320 nm) (UV-B) radiation has been examined by a number of investigators, but few studies have been conducted on ultraviolet-A (320-400 nm) (UV-A), UV-B and PAR interactions. High ratios of PAR-UV-B and UV-A-UV-B have been found to be important in ameliorating UV-B damage in both terrestrial and aquatic plants. Growth chamber and greenhouse studies conducted at low PAR, low UV-A and high UV-B often show exaggerated UV-B damage. Spectral balance of PAR, UV-A and UV-B has also been shown to be important in determining plant sensitivity in field studies. In general, one observes a reduction in total biomass and plant height with decreasing PAR and increasing UV-B. The protective effects of high PAR against elevated UV-B may also be indirect, by increasing leaf thickness and the concentration of flavonoids and other phenolic compounds known to be important in UV screening. The quality of PAR is also important, with blue light, together with UV-A radiation, playing a key role in photorepair of DNA lesions. Further studies are needed to determine the interactions of UV-A, UV-B and PAR. [source] Coxibs: evolution of prescription's behaviour in FranceFUNDAMENTAL & CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY, Issue 3 2007Julie Biga Abstract The aim of the present study was, first to characterize profiles of coxibs' prescribers [general practitioners (GPs) and rheumatologists] in 2002 in France and, secondly, to identify factors associated with modification of this profile 1 year later. All GPs and rheumatologists from Midi-Pyrenees, Aquitaine, Languedoc-Roussillon and Pays de Loire areas (South of France: 11 050 000 inhabitants) were included in the study. For each practitioner, we used data concerning all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including coxibs reimbursed during period 1 (P1; January,March 2002) and period 2 (P2; January,March 2003). The ratio between the number of coxibs' prescriptions and the total number of NSAIDs' prescriptions (including coxibs) was used to define the two profiles of prescribers, one with a low level of coxibs' prescriptions and another one with a high level of coxibs' prescriptions. Characteristics of practitioners and characteristics of their practices were compared according to this profile. In the second step, we investigated the characteristics (of practitioners and practices) associated with an increase in the level of coxibs' prescriptions in P2 for practitioners with a low level of coxibs' prescriptions in P1. Results are expressed as odds ratio with their 95% confidence intervals. A positive statistical link was found between a high level of coxibs' prescriptions, the speciality of rheumatologist or extra costs for consultation. In contrast, a negative association was observed with female gender or age below 44 years. No relationship was found with the status of referent. Concerning practices' characteristics of practitioners, there was a positive statistical link between a high ratio of coxibs' prescriptions and high co-prescriptions of gastroprotective agents and a negative association with a high number of acts, a high proportion of patients with chronic disabling diseases (CDD) or a high number of patients between 15 and 64 years. There was no statistical link with proportion of patients covered by Universal Medical Coverage (UMC) or aged more than 65 years. Among the factors involved in the increase in the ratio (between P1 and P2), no relationship was found with practitioners' characteristics. In contrast, some factors related to practices (level of gastroprotective co-prescriptions, number of acts, number of CDD patients) were related to a change in coxibs' prescriptions between P1 and P2. This study allowed to discuss some relationships between coxibs' prescription and practitioners' (age, gender, medical speciality or extra costs for consultation) or practices' (level of medical practice, patients' age, number of CDD patients or level of gastroprotective prescriptions) characteristics. In contrast, some other factors like the referent status or the number of patients with UMC are not related. Physicians, initially low prescribers of coxibs and increasing their coxibs' prescriptions during the period of our study, were those with a high level of gastroprotective prescriptions, a low number of acts or a small proportion of CDD patients. [source] High Purity GaAs Nanowires Free of Planar Defects: Growth and Characterization,ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 23 2008Hannah J. Joyce Abstract We investigate how to tailor the structural, crystallographic and optical properties of GaAs nanowires. Nanowires were grown by Au nanoparticle-catalyzed metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. A high arsine flow rate, that is, a high ratio of group V to group III precursors, imparts significant advantages. It dramatically reduces planar crystallographic defects and reduces intrinsic carbon dopant incorporation. Increasing V/III ratio further, however, instigates nanowire kinking and increases nanowire tapering. By choosing an intermediate V/III ratio we achieve uniform, vertically aligned GaAs nanowires, free of planar crystallographic defects, with excellent optical properties and high purity. These findings will greatly assist the development of future GaAs nanowire-based electronic and optoelectronic devices, and are expected to be more broadly relevant to the rational synthesis of other III,V nanowires. [source] SPLITTING AND BREAKING OF PISTACHIO NUTS WITH STRIKING AND HEATINGJOURNAL OF FOOD PROCESS ENGINEERING, Issue 3 2008H.I. CEM BILIM ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of heating process and striking on splitting and breaking of pistachio nuts and obtaining their kernels without damage. For this purpose, heating process (350C) was applied to pistachio nuts. Heated nuts were dropped onto the rotating disk and then thrown to strike the wall of the container by centrifuge effect . Striking velocity was adjusted with a rotating disk that was driven by an electrical engine. Three different disk rotations (400, 500 and 600/min) with three different moisture contents of pistachios (6.5, 22.0 and 42.5%) were evaluated in the experiments. Results indicated that the highest splitting rate was obtained as 29.33% at 22.0% moisture content with 400 1/min disk velocity. The most healthy kernel percentage obtained from unsplit pistachio nuts was 25.76% at 6.5% moisture content with 500 1/min disk velocity. Additionally, the study results showed that only the heating process had no affect while heating and crushing combinations increased splitting and obtaining the kernels. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Consumption of healthy foods is very important for human health. Kirmizi variety of pistachio nuts contains a high ratio of unsplit pistachio nuts after harvest. These pistachio nuts are either consumed as appetizers or used in the sweets sector after extracting the inner part (kernel). The economical value of unsplit pistachio nuts is very low. For this reason, pistachio nut processing plants try to split them or extract the inner part without causing any damage. Unsplit pistachio nuts are split by hand or by primitive hand tools, such as hammer or pliers, and then extracted. This method is not healthy. This study is one of the limited studies concerning automatic, quick and economic splitting and extraction of pistachio nuts. After handling problems like splitting and extracting the kernel of pistachio nuts, pistachio nut processing plants will achieve a healthy pistachio nut production. This study offers a new system for healthy pistachio nut production, with low initial cost, lower wages and in less time. [source] Unexpected reactions associated with the xanthate-mediated polymerization of N -vinylpyrrolidoneJOURNAL OF POLYMER SCIENCE (IN TWO SECTIONS), Issue 19 2008Gwenaelle Pound Abstract The monomer N -vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) undergoes side reactions in the presence of R group functional xanthates and impurities. The fate of the monomer NVP and a selection of six O -ethyl xanthates during xanthate-mediated polymerization were studied via NMR spectroscopy. A high number of by-products were identified. Significant side reactions affecting NVP include the formation of an unsaturated dimer and hydration products in bulk or in solution in C6D6. In addition, the xanthate adjacent to a NVP unit was found to undergo elimination at moderate temperature (60,70 °C), resulting in unsaturated species and the formation of new xanthate species. The presence of the chlorinated compound ,-chlorophenyl acetic acid, ethyl ester, a precursor in the synthesis of the xanthate S -(2-ethyl phenylacetate) O -ethyl xanthate, resulted in a dramatic increase in the rate of side reactions such as unsaturated dimer formation and a high ratio of unsaturated chain ends. The conditions for the occurrence of such side reactions are discussed in this article, with relevance to increasing the control over the polymerization kinetics, endgroup functionality, and control over the molar mass distribution. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Zhan Summary We constructed the microsatellite-based linkage maps using 318 markers typed in two F1 outbred families of Zhikong scallop (Chlamys farreri). The results showed an extremely high proportion (56.2%) of non-amplifying null alleles and a high ratio (30%) of segregation distortion. By aligning different individual-based linkage maps, 19 linkage groups were identified, which are consistent with the haploid chromosome number of Zhikong scallop. The integrated linkage map contains 154 markers covering 1561.8 cM with an average intermarker spacing of 12.3 cM and 77.0% of genome coverage. We found that the heterogeneity in recombination rate was not determined by sexes but by different individuals on 18 linkage regions. The phenotypic marker of general shell colour was placed on LG4, which was flanked by microsatellite markers CFLD064 and CFBD055. Four size-related traits including shell length (SL), shell width (SW), shell height (SH) and gross weight (GW) were analysed to identify the putative quantitative trait loci (QTL). Under the half-sib model, using dam as common parent, three, two, two and one QTL affecting SL, SW, SH and GW exceeded the genome-wide thresholds respectively. While using sir as common parent, a larger number of QTL were detected for these four traits: four, five, three and two for SL, SW, SH and GW respectively. The single QTL explained 3.7,19.2% of the phenotypic variation. The linkage map and the QTL associated with economic traits will provide useful information for marker-assisted selection of Zhikong scallop. [source] Impact of Transfusion of Fresh-frozen Plasma and Packed Red Blood Cells in a 1:1 Ratio on Survival of Emergency Department Patients with Severe TraumaACADEMIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE, Issue 5 2009Shahriar Zehtabchi MD Abstract Objectives:, Coagulopathy is common after severe trauma and occurs very early after the initial insult. Some investigators have suggested early and aggressive treatment of the trauma-induced coagulopathy by transfusion of fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) and packed red blood cells (PRBC) in a 1:1 ratio. This evidence-based emergency medicine (EBM) review evaluates the evidence regarding the impact of 1:1 ratio of FFP:PRBC transfusion on survival of emergency department (ED) patients with severe trauma. Methods:, The MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and other databases were searched. Studies were selected for inclusion if they included trauma patients who required blood transfusion. The outcome measures of interest included mortality and adverse effects of high FFP:PRBC ratios. For comparison, the patients were classified into high ratio (1:1, defined as a ratio of 1:,1.5) and low ratio (1:>1.5) groups. Results:, The authors did not identify any randomized controlled trials (RCT), but included four observational studies (three retrospective registry and one prospective cohort studies), which enrolled 1,511 patients cumulatively. One study found a statistically significant difference in mortality rate, favoring high FFP:PRBC ratio (relative risk = 0.72, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.59 to 0.89), while three studies showed no benefits. One study reported higher rates of sepsis and single/multiorgan failure (MOF), and another study revealed a higher risk of nosocomial infections and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in the high FFP:PRBC ratio group. Conclusion:, Three retrospective registry reviews with suboptimal methodologies and one prospective cohort study provide inadequate evidence to support or refute the use of a high FFP:PRBC ratio in patients with severe trauma. [source] Efficient synthesis of a long carbohydrate chain alkyl glycoside catalyzed by cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase)BIOTECHNOLOGY & BIOENGINEERING, Issue 5 2009David Svensson Abstract Alkyl glycosides with long carbohydrate groups are surfactants with attractive properties but they are very difficult to synthesize. Here, a method for extension of the carbohydrate group of commercially available dodecyl-,- d -maltoside (DDM) is presented. DDM was converted to dodecyl-,- d -maltooctaoside (DDMO) in a single step by using a CGTase as catalyst and ,-cyclodextrin (,-CD) as glycosyl donor. The coupling reaction is under kinetic control and the maximum yield depends on the selectivity of the enzyme. The Bacillus macerans CGTase favored the coupling reaction while the Thermoanaerobacter enzyme also catalyzed disproportionation reactions leading to a broader product range. [source] Evaluation of metabolism using stoichiometry in fermentative biohydrogenBIOTECHNOLOGY & BIOENGINEERING, Issue 3 2009Hyung-Sool Lee Abstract We first constructed full stoichiometry, including cell synthesis, for glucose mixed-acid fermentation at different initial substrate concentrations (0.8,6 g-glucose/L) and pH conditions (final pH 4.0,8.6), based on experimentally determined electron-equivalent balances. The fermentative bioH2 reactions had good electron closure (,9.8 to +12.7% for variations in glucose concentration and ,3 to +2% for variations in pH), and C, H, and O errors were below 1%. From the stoichiometry, we computed the ATP yield based on known fermentation pathways. Glucose-variation tests (final pH 4.2,5.1) gave a consistent fermentation pattern of acetate,+,butyrate,+,large H2, while pH significantly shifted the catabolic pattern: acetate,+ butyrate,+,large H2 at final pH 4.0, acetate,+,ethanol,+ modest H2 at final pH 6.8, and acetate,+,lactate,+,trivial H2 at final pH 8.6. When lactate or propionate was a dominant soluble end product, the H2 yield was very low, which is in agreement with the theory that reduced ferredoxin (Fdred) formation is required for proton reduction to H2. Also consistent with this hypothesis is that high H2 production correlated with a high ratio of butyrate to acetate. Biomass was not a dominant sink for electron equivalents in H2 formation, but became significant (12%) for the lowest glucose concentration (i.e., the most oligotrophic condition). The fermenting bacteria conserved energy similarly at ,3 mol ATP/mol glucose (except 0.8 g-glucose/L, which had ,3.5 mol ATP/mol glucose) over a wide range of H2 production. The observed biomass yield did not correlate with ATP conservation; low observed biomass yields probably were caused by accelerated rates of decay or production of soluble microbial products. [source] Coexistence of a sulphate-reducing Desulfovibrio species and the dehalorespiring Desulfitobacterium frappieri TCE1 in defined chemostat cultures grown with various combinations of sulphate and tetrachloroetheneENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 2 2001Oliver Drzyzga A two-member co-culture consisting of the dehalorespiring Desulfitobacterium frappieri TCE1 and the sulphate-reducing Desulfovibrio sp. strain SULF1 was obtained via anaerobic enrichment from soil contaminated with tetrachloroethene (PCE). In this co-culture, PCE dechlorination to cis -dichloroethene was due to the activity of the dehalorespiring bacterium only. Chemostat experiments with lactate as the primary electron donor for both strains along with varying sulphate and PCE concentrations showed that the sulphate-reducing strain outnumbered the dehalogenating strain at relatively high ratios of sulphate/PCE. Stable co-cultures with both organisms present at similar cell densities were observed when both electron acceptors were supplied in the reservoir medium in nearly equimolar amounts. In the presence of low sulphate/PCE ratios, the Desulfitobacterium sp. became the numerically dominant strain within the chemostat co-culture. Surprisingly, in the absence of sulphate, strain SULF1 did not disappear completely from the co-culture despite the fact that there was no electron acceptor provided with the medium to be used by this sulphate reducer. Therefore, we propose a syntrophic association between the sulphate-reducing and the dehalorespiring bacteria via interspecies hydrogen transfer. The sulphate reducer was able to sustain growth in the chemostat co-culture by fermenting lactate and using the dehalogenating bacterium as a ,biological electron acceptor'. This is the first report describing growth of a sulphate-reducing bacterium in a defined two-member continuous culture by syntrophically coupling the electron and hydrogen transfer to a dehalorespiring bacterium. [source] Variations of chemical compositions in coarse aerosols and fine aerosols in two successive episodesENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, Issue 8 2006Chung-Yih Kuo Abstract Particulate matter with diameters less than 2.5 ,m (PM2.5) and ranging between 10 to 2.5 ,m (PM10-2.5) were simultaneously collected at four air-quality monitoring stations in the Taichung area of central Taiwan during the period of February 12 to 22, 2004. Two different types of PM10 episodes, a nonlocal dust-storm episode and a local episode, were observed in the present study. High concentrations of coarse aerosols occurred during the dust-storm episode, whereas high concentrations of fine aerosols were present during the local episode. Relatively high levels of Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Cl, in coarse aerosols were observed during the dust-storm episode. Very high concentrations of secondary aerosols (NH+4, SO2,4, and NO,3) in fine aerosols were observed during the local episode. The nitrate ion demonstrated the greatest increase in the ratios of ionic species to PM2.5 and ionic species to PM10-2.5 during the local episode. Significantly high ratios (0.444) of NO,3 to NO2 in fine aerosols were present during the local episode, indicating that the relatively high formation rate of NO,3 was one of the important factors leading to the increase of the NO,3 to PM2.5 ratio during the local episode. Results also showed that an abundant quantity of fine ammonium nitrate was formed during the local episode, and chloride depletion probably was the major pathway to form coarse NaNO3 during this episode. [source] PON1 L55M polymorphism is not a predictor of coronary atherosclerosis either alone or in combination with Q192R polymorphism in an Italian populationEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL INVESTIGATION, Issue 1 2002M. Arca Abstract Background, The present study evaluated the role of the PON1 L55M polymorphism independently and in conjunction with the Q192R polymorphism on the risk of coronary atherosclerosis in an Italian population. Materials and methods, Three hundred and ninety-one subjects with significant coronary stenosis (> 50%) (coronary artery disease-positive; CAD+), 196 subjects with normal coronary arteries (< 10% stenosis) (CAD,) and 178 healthy controls were screened using a combination of polymerase chain reaction and restriction enzyme digestion. Results, In the pooled population, the frequencies of L and M alleles were 0·63 and 0·37, respectively; the most common haplotypes were QQ/LM (24·2%) and QR/LL (21·8%) and a strong linkage disequilibrium between L/55 and R/192 alleles was observed (D, = ,0·91; P < 0·0001). CAD+ subjects did not show any significant differences in the distribution of PON1,55 genotypes as compared to CAD, subjects and population controls (,2 = 1·5, P = 0·8). After controlling for other risk factors, the low-concentration M allele was not associated with a significant change of CAD risk (OR 1·02; 95% CI 0·80,1·29; P = 0·87). Moreover, the L55M polymorphism did not show any interaction with other risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, hypertension, low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or high ratios of low-density to high-density lipoproteins. The combination of L55M with the Q192R polymorphism did not show any effect on CAD risk. However, a marginal decrease in myocardial infarction risk was detected when QQ/MM carriers (OR 0·51; 95% CI 0·26,0·99; P = 0·048), but not LL/RR carriers, were compared with subjects not homozygous for an L or R allele. Conclusions, These findings did not indicate a major effect of the PON1 L55M polymorphism, either alone or in combination with the Q192R polymorphism, on CAD risk. Additional studies are needed for a better evaluation of the role of the 55/192 PON1 genotypes in combination on myocardial infarction risk. [source] The use of leukocyte profiles to measure stress in vertebrates: a review for ecologistsFUNCTIONAL ECOLOGY, Issue 5 2008A. K. Davis Summary 1A growing number of ecologists are turning to the enumeration of white blood cells from blood smears (leukocyte profiles) to assess stress in animals. There has been some inconsistency and controversy in the ecological literature, however, regarding their interpretation. The inconsistencies may stem partly from a lack of information regarding how stress affects leukocytes in different taxa, and partly from a failure on the part of researchers in one discipline to consult potentially informative literature from another. 2Here, we seek to address both issues by reviewing the literature on the leukocyte response to stress, spanning the taxa of mammals (including humans), birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish. 3We show that much of the early literature points to a close link between leukocyte profiles and glucocorticoid levels. Specifically, these hormones act to increase the number and percentage of neutrophils (heterophils in birds and reptiles), while decreasing the number and percentage of lymphocytes. This phenomenon is seen in all five vertebrate taxa in response to either natural stressors or exogenous administration of stress hormones. For the ecologist, therefore, high ratios of heterophils or neutrophils to lymphocytes (,H : L' or ,N : L' ratios) in blood samples reliably indicate high glucocorticoid levels. Furthermore, this close relationship between stress hormones and N : L or H : L ratios needs to be highlighted more prominently in haematological assessments of stress, as it aids the interpretation of results. 4As with hormone assays, there are challenges to overcome in the use of leukocytes profiles to assess levels of stress; however, there are also advantages to this approach, and we outline each. Given the universal and consistent nature of the haematological response to stress, plus the overwhelming evidence from the veterinary, biomedical and ecological literature reviewed here, we conclude that this method can provide a reliable assessment of stress in all vertebrate taxa. [source] EFFECTS OF INULIN AND BULKING AGENTS ON SOME PHYSICOCHEMICAL, TEXTURAL AND SENSORY PROPERTIES OF MILK CHOCOLATEJOURNAL OF TEXTURE STUDIES, Issue 5 2009HANNANEH FARZANMEHR ABSTRACT Chocolates are favorite foodstuffs with high sugar contents. Therefore, in the present study, the production of a low-sugar milk chocolate with prebiotic properties is evaluated. Various ratios of inulin (IN), polydextrose (PD) and maltodextrin (MD) along with sucralose (0.04% w/w) were used instead of sugar. Fifteen formulations were examined to determine some physicochemical, mechanical and sensory properties in order to find their optimum ratios. In general, formulations with high ratios of PD and MD were moister and softer than control. The lowest moisture content and highest hardness were observed for the moderate ratios. In addition, MD induced the least desirable sensorial effects, whereas PD and IN pronouncedly improved the overall acceptability. The optimum applicable range for IN, PD and MD were 14,32% and 71,84%, 7,26% and 67,77%, and 0,20% of sugar substitutes, respectively. Our findings on simultaneous fat and sugar reductions also indicated the possibility of fat cut up to 5% in comparison to previous fat content. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS In this paper, we have reported the influences of inulin (IN) as a prebiotic as well as polydextrose (PD) and maltodextrin (MD) as bulking agents on physicochemical, energy content, texture and sensory properties of milk chocolate using simplex lattice mixture design. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in this field with very interesting results and practical applicability. Moreover, our findings showed that the use of aforementioned ingredients instead of sugar could lead to production of low-calorie milk chocolate without having the undesirable textural and physiological effects on the product and consumers. Moreover, the simplex lattice mixture design was found a very useful technique for finding optimum ratios of sugar replacers in formulation. [source] Social stress, visceral obesity, and coronary artery atherosclerosis: product of a primate adaptationAMERICAN JOURNAL OF PRIMATOLOGY, Issue 9 2009Carol A. Shively Abstract Abdominal obesity is prevalent and often accompanied by an array of metabolic perturbations including elevated blood pressure, dyslipidemia, impaired glucose tolerance or insulin resistance, a prothrombotic state, and a proinflammatory state, together referred to as the metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome greatly increases coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. Social stress also increases CHD although the mechanisms through which this occurs are not completely understood. Chronic stress may result in sustained glucocorticoid production, which is thought to promote visceral obesity. Thus, one hypothesis is that social stress may cause visceral fat deposition and the metabolic syndrome, which, in turn increases CHD. CHD is caused by coronary artery atherosclerosis (CAA) and its sequelae. Cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) are a well-established models of CAA. Social subordination may be stressful to cynomolgus monkeys and result in hypercortisolemia and exacerbated CAA in females. Herein is reviewed a body of literature which suggests that social stress increases visceral fat deposition in cynomolgus monkeys, that subordinate females are more likely than dominants to have visceral obesity, that females with visceral obesity have behavioral and physiological characteristics consistent with a stressed state, and that females with high ratios of visceral to subcutaneous abdominal fat develop more CAA. While these relationships have been most extensively studied in cynomolgus macaques, obesity-related metabolic disturbances are also observed in other primate species. Taken together, these observations support the view that the current obesity epidemic is the result of a primate adaptation involving the coevolution with encephalization of elaborate physiological systems to protect against starvation and defend stored body fat in order to feed a large and metabolically demanding brain. Social stress may be engaging these same physiological systems, increasing the visceral deposition of fat and its sequelae, which increase CHD risk. Am. J.
