Selected AbstractsGreater capacity for division of labour in clones of Fragaria chiloensis from patchier habitatsJOURNAL OF ECOLOGY, Issue 3 2007SERGIO R. ROILOA Summary 1Unlike non-clonal plants, clonal plants can develop a division of labour in which connected ramets specialize to acquire different, locally abundant resources. This occurs as a plastic response to a patchy environment where two resources tend not to occur together and different ramets experience high availabilities of different resources. We hypothesized that if division of labour is an important advantage of clonal growth in such environments in nature, then clones from habitats where resource availabilities are negatively associated should show a greater capacity for division of labour than clones from habitats where resource availabilities are more uniform. 2To test this, we collected clones of Fragaria chiloensis from sand dune and grassland sites in each of three regions of the central coast of California, grew pairs of connected or severed ramets under low light and high N or under high light and low N, and measured leaf area, chlorophyll content and final dry mass. Given that previous work has indicated that high availabilities of light and N show a stronger tendency not to occur together in the dune than in the grassland sites, we expected that clones from dunes would show greater capacity for division of labour than clones from grasslands. 3Clones from dunes showed a greater capacity than clones from grasslands to specialize for acquisition of abundant N via high proportional mass of roots. Clones from the two types of habitats showed similar capacity to specialize for acquisition of abundant light via high leaf area and chlorophyll content of leaves. Specialization via leaf area and chlorophyll content took place mainly within the first half of the 60-day experiment. 4These results provide evidence that division of labour in a clonal plant has been selected for in natural habitats where high levels of different resources tend to be spatially separated. Results also show that division of labour can occur, not just via allocation of mass, but also via physiological traits, and that both morphological and physiological specialization can take place within a few weeks. 5Clonal plants dominate many habitats and include many highly invasive species. Division of labour is one of the most striking potential advantages of clonal growth, and is a remarkable instance of phenotypic plasticity in plants. This study further suggests that division of labour in clonal plants is an instance of adaptive plasticity and could therefore play a part in their widespread ecological success. [source] Role of Nitric Oxide in Pentylenetetrazol-Induced Seizures: Age-Dependent Effects in the Immature RatEPILEPSIA, Issue 4 2000Anne Pereira de Vasconcelos Summary: Purpose: Seizure susceptibility and consequences are highly age dependent. To understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in seizures and their consequences during development, we investigated the role of nitric oxide (NO) in severe pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced seizures in immature rats. Methods: Four cortical electrodes were implanted in 10-day-old (P10) and 21-day-old (P21) rats, and seizures were induced on the following day by repetitive injections of subconvulsive doses of PTZ. The effects of NG -nitro- l -arginine methyl ester (l -NAME; 10 mg/kg) and 7-nitroindazole (7NI; 40 mg/kg), two NO synthase (NOS) inhibitors, and l -arginine (l -arg; 300 mg/kg), the NOS substrate, were evaluated regarding the mean PTZ dose, seizure type and duration, and mortality rate. Results: At P10, the postseizure mortality rate increased from 18,29% for the rats receiving PTZ only to 100% and 89% for the rats receiving l -NAME and 7NI, respectively; whereas l -arg had no effect. Conversely, at P21, NOS inhibitors did not affect the 82,89% mortality rate induced by PTZ alone, whereas l -arg decreased the mortality rate to 29%. In addition, all NO-related drugs increased the duration of ictal activity at P10, whereas at P21, L -arg and L -NAME affected the first seizure type, producing clonic seizures with L -arg and tonic seizures with L -NAME. Conclusions: The relative natural protection of very immature rats (P10) against PTZ-induced deaths could be linked to a high availability of L -arg and, hence, endogenous NO. At P21, the modulation of seizure type by NO-related compounds may be related to the maturation of the brain circuitry, in particular the forebrain, which is involved in the expression of clonic seizures. We have studied adopted and tested various software & hardware approaches for developing an observational facility equipped with the very high availability needed to achieve continuous operation, inherent capacity for effective multiuser support, fully robotic unattended operation, fast response to targets of opportunity and accommodation of tele-operating instruments. Critical practical aspects and considerations of our operating implementation as well as the main points of an ongoing upgrade initiative expected to be of general interest, are discussed. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Risk behaviours of young Indo-Chinese injecting drug users in Sydney and MelbourneAUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND JOURNAL OF PUBLIC HEALTH, Issue 1 2001Lisa Maher Objective: To investigate patterns of drug use and injection-related risk behaviours among young Indo-Chinese injecting drug users (IDUs). Method: Cross-sectional survey. A structured questionnaire was administered to 184 Indo-Chinese IDUs aged 15 to 24 in Sydney and Melbourne. Participants were recruited using snowball sampling techniques; measures included patterns of heroin and other drug use, injection-related risk behaviours, perceived susceptibility to HIV and HCV infection and access to services. Results: Despite perceived high availability of sterile injecting equipment, 36% had ever shared a needle and syringe and 22% had done so in the preceding month. Lifetime sharing was significantly associated with duration of injecting, history of incarceration and residence in Sydney. Sharing of injecting paraphernalia other than needles and syringes was also common, with young women and Sydney residents significantly more likely to report sharing equipment in the preceding month. Conclusions: Young Indo-Chinese IDUs are at high risk of infection with hepatitis C and other blood-borne viruses. Results indicate an urgent need for culturally appropriate and sustainable risk reduction programs which specifically target this population. Implications: Health services must respond swiftly to implement effective blood-borne virus prevention programs for young Indo-Chinese IDUs. Failure to do so may sustain the current epidemic of hepatitis C among IDUs. [source] Persisting Hyper-abundance of Leaf-cutting Ants (Atta spp.) at the Edge of an Old Atlantic Forest FragmentBIOTROPICA, Issue 6 2009Sebastian T. Meyer ABSTRACT Leaf-cutting ants (LCAs) profoundly benefit from edge creation in Neotropical forests, where they act as a keystone species and disturbance agent. In view of their poorly explored population dynamics, the question arises whether high densities of LCAs are a transitional or a persisting phenomenon. We studied the temporal variation of LCA colony densities at the edge of the Brazilian Atlantic forest. At physically stable edges of an old forest fragment, densities of Atta cephalotes and Atta sexdens (11 and five times higher in a 50 m edge zone in comparison with the forest interior) persisted over a 4-yr interval (2001,2005) with no significant difference in densities between years. Species-specific per colony growth rates ranged from 12 to ,5 percent/yr, suggesting that populations were approximately at equilibrium. High rates of colony turnover (little less than 50% in 4 yr) indicated an average colony life span of about 7 yr,a life expectancy considerably lower than previous estimates for Atta colonies. Stable, hyper-abundant populations of LCAs accord with the constantly high availability of palatable pioneer vegetation (the preferred food source of LCAs) at forest edges and are expected to persist in time as long as forests are characterized by high edge to interior ratios, with potentially long-lasting consequences for the ecosystem. [source] An Extremely Simple Dibenzopentalene Synthesis from 2-Bromo-1-ethynylbenzenes Using Nickel(0) Complexes: Construction of Its Derivatives with Various FunctionalitiesCHEMISTRY - A EUROPEAN JOURNAL, Issue 11 2009Takeshi Kawase Prof. Abstract Nice and easy: A very simple synthesis for dibenzopentalenes, which starts from 1-bromo-2-ethynylbenzenes, has been developed. It uses Ni0 complexes (see scheme), from which a relatively stable NiII complex as an important intermediate has been isolated. Dibenzopentalenes with various functional groups can be prepared by the procedure, and their electronic properties are consistent with theoretical calculations. An extremely simple dibenzopentalene synthesis from readily available 2-bromo-1-ethynylbenzenes using a nickel(0) complex is described. Although the yields are moderate, the formation of three CC bonds in a single process and the high availability of the starting materials are important advantages of this reaction. The corresponding aryl,nickel(II) complex as an important intermediate was isolated as relatively stable crystals, and the structure was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The high stability of this complex should play a key role in this reaction. The reaction is applicable to the preparation of dibenzopentalenes bearing various functional groups. Their electronic properties are consistent with theoretical calculations. The cyclic voltammograms of these compounds reveal highly amphoteric redox properties. In particular, the electron-donating property of a tetramethoxy derivative is greater than that of oligothiophenes and dibenzodithiophenes and almost comparable to that of pentacene. [source] |
