Selected AbstractsThe process and promise of mental health augmentation of nurse home-visiting programs: Data from the Louisiana Nurse,Family PartnershipINFANT MENTAL HEALTH JOURNAL, Issue 1 2006Neil W. Boris The Nurse,Family Partnership (NFP) model is a well-studied and effective preventive intervention program targeting first-time, impoverished mothers and their families. Data documenting the negative impact of maternal depression and partner violence on the developing young child can be used to make a strong case for augmenting NFP programs to focus on mental health problems impacting the mother,child relationship. This article reviews the rationale for and process of augmenting an NFP program in Louisiana. Data on the prevalence of depression and partner violence in our sample are presented alongside a training protocol for nurses and mental health consultants designed to increase the focus on infant mental health. The use of a weekly case conference and telephone supervision of mental health consultants as well as reflections on the roles of the mental health consultant and the nurse supervisor are presented. Zimmerman ABSTRACT The excerpts taken from this historical article by Kent Zimmerman, M.D., a mental health consultant to the California State Department of Health, provide insight about the role of public health nurses in working with pregnant women. Dr. Zimmerman, an expert in the field of the psychological problems of pregnancy and early childhood, was a part of an international group of psychiatric dignitaries who met in 1952 in France at a conference examining the state of psychological knowledge and care of children (Soddy, 1999). In this paper, the psychiatrist addresses the need for education and support in providing mental health services to clients in public health venues, a theme he reiterated in 1952. In this piece, he argued that staff nurses in public health agencies be trained in basics of psychiatry and that specialists be hired to serve as permanent consultants to public health workers to help with the most challenging nurse-client interactions, and with the emotions that accompany difficult interpersonal work. While knowledge has developed a great deal since the publication of this article in February 1947 in Public Health Nursing, readers may be surprised to see that interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork were ideals more than 50 years ago. Crowley PhD PURPOSE.,This study explored the nature of consultation between childcare providers and nurse childcare health consultants and identified factors that promote a collaborative relationship. DESIGN AND METHODS.,A qualitative study using semistructured, individual interviews of five collaborative and five conflicted pairs of nurse childcare health consultants and childcare center directors. Data were analyzed following principles of grounded theory and applying the constant comparative method of analysis. RESULTS.,Establishing a collaborative relationship was influenced by previous experiences and four themes in the relationship: open and active communication, commitment, respect, and congruent philosophies. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS.,Preparation in developing collaborative relationships should be incorporated into the education of nurse consultants and childcare directors and providers. [source] |
