Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Focal Splenic and Hepatic Lesions in the Dog

Focal hepatic and splenic lesions in the dog are common, and approximately half of such lesions are malignant. Both incidentally discovered lesions and lesions in patients with known malignancies represent diagnostic dilemmas. Ultrasound often fails to characterize such lesions adequately. This uncertainty may result in unnecessary splenectomies and liver biopsies for benign lesions or noncurative surgery for advanced-stage malignancies. In humans, ultrasound largely has been supplanted by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the characterization of focal hepatic and splenic lesions. The inherently high soft tissue contrast of MRI allows the differentiation of benign from malignant hepatic and splenic lesions in the human patients. In this prospective study, 35 focal lesions of either the spleen (n = 8) or the liver (n = 27) were characterized by MRI in 23 dogs. Lesions were presumptively classified as malignant or benign on the basis of MRI findings. Imaging results then were correlated with histopathologic (29) or cytologic (6) evaluation of the lesions. The overall accuracy in differentiating malignant from benign lesions was 94% (33 of 35 lesions). The overall sensitivity and specificity were 100% (95% CI, 78,100%) and 90% (95% CI, 68,99%), respectively. MRI classified malignant hepatic lesions as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in all confirmed cases and correctly predicted the histologic grade of 5 HCC lesions. These results suggest that MRI is a useful modality for abdominal imaging in veterinary patients, and MRI accurately differentiated benign from malignant focal hepatic and splenic lesions in this sample of patients. Sex difference in the liver of hepatocyte-specific Pten-deficient mice: A model of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

Aim:, Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered to be a public health problem worldwide. NAFLD is more prevalent in men than in women. Tamoxifen, a potent estrogen receptor antagonist, causes nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a severe form of NAFLD. Thus, there may be a sex difference that is dependent on estrogens in NAFLD and NASH. Hepatocyte-specific Pten-deficient mice exhibit hepatic lesions analogous to NASH and are considered to be a clinical model of NASH. We aimed to shed light on any sex differences in the hepatic lesions of Pten-deficient mice and the underlying mechanisms. Methods:, At 40 weeks, livers from male and female Pten-deficient mice were processed for measuring lipid content, genes expression analysis, and histological examination. Level of serum reactive oxygen species (ROS) was also determined. Seventy-six-week-old mice were used in tumor burden experiments. Results:, Hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and even carcinogenesis in Pten-deficient mice were attenuated in females compared to males. Attenuated fatty liver in females was ascribed to inactivation of sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c. Hepatic inflammation in females was suppressed via decreased ROS with increased antioxidant gene expression and decreased proinflammatory cytokine production. Anti-cancer effect in female mice was, at least in part, due to the significantly lower ratio of oleic to stearic acid in the liver. Conclusions:, Hepatic lesions in Pten-deficient mice were attenuated in females compared to males, as were human NAFLD and NASH. Some of the underlying mechanisms in sex difference appeared to be due to the change of gene expression, dependent on estrogens. [source]


Focal nodular hyperplasia-like lesion of the liver in a child previously treated for nephroblastoma

Described herein is the case of an 8-year-old boy who developed a hepatic nodular lesion after having received anti-neoplastic therapy for nephroblastoma. Histological examination of the excised specimen indicated a disordered arrangement of hepatic components with hemangioma-like features. This case was diagnosed as a variant of focal nodular hyperplasia. It is speculated that this hepatic lesion is a late complication of treatment for nephroblastoma and might develop from congenital malformative area of the liver. [source]

Sonographic findings of hepatic lesions in human fascioliasis

Abstract Purpose The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the sonographic features of hepatic lesions in patients with fascioliasis to help determine the utility of sonography in diagnosing this disorder in patients from areas in which Fasciola hepatica infestation is endemic. Methods Seven patients with acute-phase (hepatic) fascioliasis had been identified among a previously reported series of 37 patients with fascioliasis who had been evaluated sonographically at Donostia Hospital in San Sebastián (Guipúzcoa), Spain. The 4 men and 3 women ranged in age from 29 to 69 years (mean, 49 years). A history of ingestion of watercress had been confirmed in 6 of the patients. Results Sonographically, the hepatic lesions appeared as focal areas of increased echogenicity in the right lobe (2 cases), multiple nodular or irregular lesions of variable echogenicity, ranging from 5 to 25 mm in diameter, in both lobes (4 cases), and a single 6-cm complex mass in the right hepatic lobe (1 case). Therapy with dehydroemetine, praziquantel, or bithionol resulted in complete remission, although 2 patients required an additional treatment cycle. One patient also underwent surgery. Conclusions Sonography can be useful in the detection and follow-up of hepatic lesions in human fascioliasis and can facilitate the diagnosis of this condition, particularly in areas where it is endemic. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Detection and differential diagnosis of hepatic masses using pulse inversion harmonic imaging during the liver-specific late phase of contrast enhancement with levovist

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate whether late-phase pulse inversion harmonic imaging (PIHI) increases conspicuity in hepatic masses, helps to differentiate benign from malignant lesions, and demonstrates a greater number of and smaller metastatic lesions than do conventional (fundamental) sonography and helical CT. Methods Thirty patients (17 women and 13 men; age range, 35,77 years; mean age, 54 years) with known or suspected liver masses were evaluated using both fundamental sonography and contrast-enhanced PIHI during the liver-specific late phase of Levovist. The patients also underwent contrast-enhanced triphasic helical CT examinations within 1 week after sonography. In 4 of the patients, gadolinium-enhanced MRI was also performed as a part of their clinical work-up. Results The increase in the lesions' conspicuity on PIHI compared with fundamental sonography was significantly greater in malignant lesions than in benign lesions (p< 0.001). An echogenic rim was observed on PIHI in 8 (53%) of 15 malignant lesions. The mean number of metastatic lesions visualized on PIHI (5.5 ± 5.3) was significantly higher than the mean number visualized on fundamental sonography (2.5 ± 2.1, p < 0.05). Although lesions as small as 3 mm were observed on PIHI, the mean sizes of the smallest lesions demonstrated using fundamental sonography, PIHI, and helical CT were not significantly different. Conclusions Late-phase PIHI is a useful technique for characterizing hepatic lesions and demonstrating both a greater number of and smaller metastases. Multiple hepatic nodules: Rare manifestation of clonorchiasis

Abstract A 38-year-old man was admitted due to intermittent right upper quadrant pain for 1 month. Leukocytosis with marked eosionphilia and elevated serum alkaline phosphatase were noted. Stool examinations revealed no parasites or ova. Ultrasonography and computed tomography disclosed multiple hepatic tumors. Biopsy of the hepatic tumor was performed due to non-conclusive imaging studies and revealed eosinophil infiltration in portal areas only. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography showed mild dilatation with irregularity of bilateral intrahepatic ducts, compatible with chronic cholangitis. Bile was aspirated and biliary lavage with normal saline was performed during endoscopy-guided biliary cannulation. Microscopic examination of the aspirate showed the characteristic ova of Clonorchis sinensis. The patient received Praziquantel therapy for 1 day. Abdominal pain reduced in intensity gradually. Eosinophilia and multiple hepatic lesions resolved after adequate treatment of Clonorchis sinensis. The rare manifestation of multiple hepatic tumors in Clonorchis sinensis should be differentiated from other primary or metastatic neoplasms, while biliary lavage for parasite ova is a valuable diagnostic tool when stool examination is negative. Novel murine autoimmune-mediated liver disease model induced by graft-versus-host reaction and concanavalin A

Abstract Background and Aims: We have previously reported that cluster of differentiation (CD)4+ T cells induced autoimmune liver diseases in mice with graft-versus-host reaction (GVHR) because of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II disparity. To analyze the progression of the autoimmune-related mechanism in the liver, concanavalin A (Con A) was injected in mice undergoing GVHR. The aim of this study is to clarify whether Con A deteriorates murine hepatic lesions induced by GVHR, and to elucidate the participation of the cytokines of liver-infiltrating CD4+ T cells. Methods: Mice (F1; B6.C-H-2bm12× B6) were intravenously injected with B6 T spleen cells. Concanavalin A (15 mg/kg) was administrated 5 days after cell transfer. We examined serum transaminase, antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA), antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and histological changes. Liver-infiltrating CD4+ T cells were sorted and their cytokine mRNA expression was examined by the use of reverse transcription,polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: Graft-versus-host reaction + Con A mice revealed an elevated serum transaminase, elevated AMA and ANA titers, increased periportal cellular infiltration, piecemeal necrosis and bridging necrosis in the liver. In this group, interferon (IFN)-, mRNA expression was more elevated than it was in the GVHR mice. However, there was no difference in the expression of interleukin (IL)-10 mRNA between the two groups. Conclusion: The results suggest that Con A deteriorates the GVHR-induced hepatic lesions, and IFN-, and IL-10 of CD4+ T cells might be implicated in the progression of autoimmune-related hepatic lesions. This model might offer an aspect for the investigation of progressive mechanisms in T-cell- mediated hepatobiliary injury. [source]


Cytokine profile of liver-infiltrating CD4+ T cells separated from murine primary biliary cirrhosis-like hepatic lesions induced by graft-versus-host reaction

Abstract Background and Methods: We have previously reported that CD4+ T cells induced primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC)-like hepatic lesions in mice with graft-versus-host reaction due to major histocompatibility complex class II disparity. To clarify the relationship between the cytokine profile produced by CD4+ T cells and the formation of hepatic lesions, we sorted CD4+ T cells from the liver by using flow cytometry and examined their cytokine mRNA expression at various times after GVHR induction. We also examined the associated changes in the serum levels of antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA). Results: Histologically, the infiltration of CD4+ T cells around the bile ducts was observed from day 5, and the lesions deteriorated gradually until day 14. On day 14, CD8+, B220+ and Mac-1+ cells, as well as CD4+ T cells were seen around the bile ducts. In the liver-infiltrating CD4+ T cells, the expression level of interferon-, (IFN-,) mRNA was observed to increase at an early phase (day 3), whereas that of interleukin (IL)-10 mRNA was elevated at a later phase (day 14). The elevation of IFN-, mRNA expression at an early phase before the appearance of non-suppurative destructive cholangitis suggests that IFN-, may be related to the pathogenesis of PBC in this model. Serum levels of AMA on day 14 were significantly higher than those on day 5. Interleukin-10 was considered to stimulate antibody production, to show an inhibitory effect upon the function of T helper 1 cells, and to inhibit fibrosis. Conclusions: Interferon-, may play an important role in the pathogenesis of this model. Moreover, delayed expression of IL-10 mRNA may control PBC-like hepatic lesions. [source]


MTHFR C677T Polymorphism and Risk of HCC in Patients With Liver Cirrhosis: Role of Male Gender and Alcohol Consumption

Background:, A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) C677T in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene has been identified. The TT or CT genotypes show a marked reduction of the enzyme activity; this causes higher homocysteine levels and alterations of folate metabolism. Folate metabolism is essential for DNA synthesis and methylation, crucial steps in carcinogenesis. In this paper, we investigated whether the MTHFR C677T SNP could influence the occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a cohort of patients transplanted for end stage liver disease of different etiologies. Methods:, Two hundred and twelve consecutive patients who underwent liver transplantation for end stage liver disease due to hepatitis B or C, alcoholic liver disease, and other causes were studied. Two hundred and thirty-six blood donors served as controls. Focal hepatic lesions were searched in the sectioned explanted livers. The presence of the MTHFR C677T SNP was determined via polymerase chain reaction amplification. Results:, Among the 65 patients with HCC, 22 had the CC genotype, 30 the CT, and 13 the TT genotype. Only in patients with alcoholic liver disease was a significant association detected between the TT genotype and the presence of liver cancer (6/17 vs. 5/46, p < 0.05). At stepwise logistic regression analysis the independent selected predictors of HCC were found: age at transplantation >55 years (p < 0.001) and the association among male gender, alcoholic liver disease, and MTHFR TT genotype (p = 0.002). Conclusions:, The present study suggests that male TT carriers with alcoholic cirrhosis bear an increased risk of developing HCC. [source]

Needle-tract implantation from hepatocellular cancer: Is needle biopsy of the liver always necessary?

Percutaneous needle biopsies are frequently used to evaluate focal lesions of the liver. Needle-tract implantation of hepatocellular cancer has been described in case reports, but the true risk for this problem has not been clearly defined. We retrospectively reviewed 91 cases of hepatocellular cancer during a 4-year period from 1994 to 1997. Data on diagnostic studies, therapy, and outcome were noted. Of 91 patients with hepatocellular cancer, 59 patients underwent percutaneous needle biopsy as part of their diagnostic workup for a liver mass. Three patients (5.1%) were identified with needle-tract implantation of tumor. Two patients required en bloc chest wall resections for implantation of hepatocellular cancer in the soft tissues and rib area. The third patient, who also received percutaneous ethanol injection of his tumor, required a thoracotomy and lung resection for implanted hepatocellular cancer. Percutaneous needle biopsy of suspicious hepatic lesions should not be performed indiscriminately because there is a significant risk for needle-tract implantation. These biopsies should be reserved for those lesions in which no definitive surgical intervention is planned and pathological confirmation is necessary for a nonsurgical therapy. Low p38 MAPK and JNK activation in cultured hepatocytes of DRH rats; a strain highly resistant to hepatocarcinogenesis

Abstract DRH rats are a hepatocarcinogenesis-resistant strain isolated from hepatocarcinogenesis-sensitive Donryu rats, and the liver of DRH shows less histological damage and fewer/smaller neoplastic hepatic lesions by the treatment with hepatocarcinogens. To investigate the mechanism of the resistance, the properties of hepatocytes of DRH and Donryu were compared. In primary culture, DRH hepatocytes exhibited higher proliferation and less apoptosis than Donryu hepatocytes in the presence of EGF and insulin. However, such difference was not correlated to the degree of DNA damage associated with cell culture or cell cycle checkpoint function. Although the mitogen-activated protein kinases [EGF receptor (EGFR) and extracellular signal regulating kinases (ERK1/2)] were activated to the same degree, the stress-activated protein kinases [p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38) and c- jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)] were activated to a lesser degree in the DRH hepatocytes. Treatment with 2-acetylaminofluorene (2-AAF) in vivo also resulted in less JNK and p38 activation in the DRH livers. Furthermore, apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1) was inhibited by the lysate from the DRH but not by the Donryu hepatocytes. The low activation of the stress-activated protein kinases may be linked to the resistance to cellular stress, which may underlie the hepatocarcinogenesis-resistance in DRH rats. © 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Miliary Neonatal Hemangiomatosis with Fulminant Heart Failure and Cardiac Septal Hypertrophy in Two Infants

We report two infants with this condition who had fulminant cardiac failure and cardiac septal hypertrophy. The first was a 5-day-old boy who presented with increasing numbers of cutaneous hemangiomata associated with worsening cardiac failure. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed extensive hepatic hemangioma. Despite treatment with systemic corticosteroids and subcutaneous interferon alfa-2b his disease progressed. Hepatic artery embolization was unsuccessful. The infant died of congestive cardiac failure at 6 weeks of age. Postmortem examination showed a massively enlarged cardiac interventricular septum and biventricular hypertrophy. The second patient was a 1-week-old girl who also had cutaneous hemangioma and cardiac decompensation. MRI showed extensive intrahepatic involvement. She was treated early with corticosteroids and interferon ,, which resulted in involution of the cutaneous and hepatic lesions. Cardiac septal hypertrophy did not persist at late follow-up, and the association of miliary neonatal hemangiomatosis and cardiac septal hypertrophy has not yet been established. [source]


Unusual evolution of an Epstein,Barr virus-associated leiomyosarcoma occurring after liver transplantation

Abstract: We report the case of a child who developed, 2 yr after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLTx) for biliary atresia, a multi-focal hepatic tumor with lymphonodular metastases, identified as an Epstein,Barr virus (EBV)-associated leiomyosarcoma. Chemotherapy was given without tumor response. Subsequently, slow growth of the tumor was observed. Immunosuppression was tapered and stopped 9 yr after transplantation. At the present time, 12 yr after the discovery of the first hepatic lesions, the patient is alive and completely symptom-free, the abdominal masses are stable, and liver function tests are completely normal. Smooth muscle tumors are increasingly recognized in children with various immunodeficiencies occurring after organ transplantation. This unusual evolution of a clinically aggressive tumor into a stable disease after restoration of immunity confirms that the immune status of the patient is a crucial factor. [source]


Resection of liver metastases from colorectal cancer: does preoperative chemotherapy affect the accuracy of PET in preoperative planning?

Abstract Background:, Preoperative scanning for hepatic colorectal metastases surgery remains a challenge, especially in the age of preoperative chemotherapy, which has marked biochemical and physical effects on the liver. Integrated fluoro-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography and computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) has applications for detecting extrahepatic disease. The aim of the present study was to investigate FDG-PET/CT as a preoperative planning tool for detecting liver lesions in patients with and without preoperative chemotherapy. Methods:, Patients who had resection of hepatic colorectal metastases between January 2004 and June 2006 were included. Patients were divided into those who received preoperative chemotherapy and those who did not. Malignant hepatic lesions found on each scan were compared with those found on histopathology, intraoperative examination and/or intraoperative ultrasound. Accurate scans (scan lesions corresponded to true lesions), false positives (scan lesions detected at least one non-lesion) and false negatives (scan lesions missed at least one true lesions) were recorded. Results were also compared on a per lesion basis. Results:, A total of 21 patients had preoperative FDG-PET/CT scans with preoperative chemotherapy and 53 without. Accurate tests were six (29%) for the chemotherapy group versus 28 (53%) for the non-chemotherapy group (P= 0.06). Notably, there were 11 (52%) underestimations in the chemotherapy group versus 18 (34%) in the non-chemotherapy group. A total of 1.7 lesions were missed per patient in the chemotherapy group versus 0.7 in those who did not receive chemotherapy. Conclusion:, Preoperative assessment with FDG-PET/CT is not useful for hepatic colorectal metastases, particularly when preoperative chemotherapy is used, with a trend towards underestimation of lesions. We investigated helical CT and CT portography as pre-op planning tools. Methodology All patients who had resection of hepatic colorectal metastases between Jan 2004 and June 2006 were included. Patients were divided into those who received neo-adjuvant chemo and those who did not. The number of malignant hepatic lesions found on each scan was compared with those found on histopathology & intra-op ultrasound/examination. Accurate scans (scan lesions = true lesions), over-estimations (scan lesions > true lesions) and under-estimations (scan lesions < true lesions) were recorded. Results 25 patients had pre-op CT portography with neo-adjuvant chemo and 63 without. Accurate scans on a per-patient basis were 2 (8%) for the chemo group vs. 27 (43%) for the non-chemo group, p < 0.002. Notably, there were 17 (68%) over-estimates in the chemo group vs. 25 (40%) in the non-chemo group. There were 6 (24%) vs. 11 (17%) under-estimates respectively. 23 patients had pre-op helical CT with neo-adjuvant chemo and 64 without. Accurate scans on a per-patient basis were 7 (30%) for the chemo group vs. 26 (41%) in the non-chemo group, p = 0.388. There were 8 (35%) over-estimates in the chemo group vs. 12 (19%) in the non-chemo group. There were 8 (35%) vs. 26 (41%) under-estimates respectively. Conclusion While CT portography is useful for detecting occult hepatic metastases, there is evidence that over-estimation of disease is a problem, particularly when neo-adjuvant chemo was used. Helical CT also shows this trend although to a lesser extent. [source]


Secondary effects induced by the colon carcinogen azoxymethane in BDIX rats,

Azoxymethane (AOM) is claimed to be a colon-specific carcinogen. In our studies, AOM was administered to adult BDIX/OrlIco rats by four weekly subcutaneous injections of 15 mg/kg body weight each , two periods of 2 weeks of AOM treatment separated by a one-week break. This treatment schedule resulted in colon carcinomas with a high frequency (75,100%) and with a high reproducibility. However, some serious side effects are associated with this carcinogen treatment. In addition to the colorectal tumours, we found small intestinal tumours, hepatic lesions and a high frequency of mesenchymal renal tumours which increased with longer latency periods. The renal tumours were only found in female rats, and this indicates a possible relation to sex hormones. We therefore analyzed both male and female kidneys for the expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors by immunohistochemical methods. A positive nuclear reaction for estrogen receptor was present in most tumour cells in all tumours and occasionally in nuclei of entrapped tubular cells, but never in glomeruli. Normal appearing renal tissue from female rats showed no positive reaction, but in male rats a slight nuclear reaction was seen in tubuli in the peripheral part of the medulla. A similar pattern was seen for progesterone receptors, but less pronounced. No rats developed tumours in the external ear canal, which is in contrast to studies performed in other rat strains. This may therefore be strain related. In order to reduce the secondary effects of the induction of colon cancer by AOM, it is advisable to use male rats only and a maximum latency period of 32 weeks. Some new aspects of the pathology, pathogenesis, and aetiology of disseminated lung lesions in slaughter pigs

From 40 pigs rejected for human consumption at slaughter due to an apparent presence of pyemic lung lesions (defined as disseminated processes containing pus and/or necrotic material), the lungs, spleen, liver, and kidneys were subjected to an extended macroscopic examination. Several lung lesions were sampled from each animal for histological and bacteriological examination. Samples from the kidneys and spleens were also subjected to bacteriological examination. At gross level, four groups of lung lesions were identified: 1) disseminated foci with contents of pus and/or necrotic material (n=26); 2) disseminated or multifocally located ecchymoses with a central area of fibroplasia (n=9); 3) non-pneumonic lesions, i.e., disseminated areas of atelectasis (n=1) or haemorrhagic areas developing due to the process of slaughter (n=1); and 4) suppurative lesions without a disseminated distribution pattern (n=3). Histologically, the disseminated suppurative/necrotic foci were identified as: A) abscesses (n=10); B) necrotic lesions (n=6); and C) ectatic or ectatic-like bronchioles with contents of pus and necrotic material (n=10). The macroscopic observation of disseminated centres of fibroplasia with peripheral ecchymoses (n=9) was confirmed histopathologically. The livers of five pigs contained multiple areas of chronic interstitial fibrosis related to migration of Ascaris suum larvae ("milk spotted liver"). Such hepatic lesions were significantly (p<0.01) related to the simultaneous occurrence of disseminated pulmonary ecchymoses with a central area of fibroplasia. Generally, all lung lesions of each individual animal contained identical monocultures of bacteria following this pattern: Staphylococcus aureus (abscesses); Actinomyces hyovaginalis (necroses); S. aureus, A. hyovaginalis, and Arcanobacterium pyogenes (ectatic and ectatic-like bronchioles). Areas with fibrosis were sterile or contained bacteria considered to be a result of contamination. Apart from one kidney, from which S. aureus was cultured, all other organs were sterile. It is concluded that difficulties exist in differentiating pulmonary pyemic lesions from non-pyemic lesions at the gross level. Thus, it was not possible to distinguish between abscesses/necroses and ectatic bronchioles, the pathogenesis of the latter being uncertain. However, the chronic non-pyemic lesions related to the migration of A. suum larvae should be identified by the absence of pus/necrosis. S. aureus was predominantly isolated from abscesses, whereas, and most surprisingly, A. hyovaginalis was the dominant bacterium isolated from the pulmonary necroses. [source]

Major hepatectomy in patients with synchronous colorectal liver metastases: whether or not a contraindication to simultaneous colorectal and liver resection?

Abstract Objective, Synchronous hepatic lesions account for 15,25% of newly diagnosed colorectal cancer and its optimal timing to surgery is not completely defined, but simultaneous colorectal and liver resection is recently gaining acceptance, at least in patients with a right colonic primary and liver metastases that need a minor hepatectomy to be fully resected. Method, From September 2002 to December 2004, 16 patients underwent simultaneous resection as treatment of synchronous colorectal liver resection; in 10 patients (62.5%) a major hepatectomy was performed. Results, The mean duration of intervention was 322.5 ± 59.5 min, operative mortality and morbidity rates was 0% and 25% respectively; the hospitalization was 14.4 (range 8,60) days on average. Mean follow-up was 14 months and actuarial survival was 76.5% at 1 year and 63.5% at 2 years. Conclusion, We concluded that simultaneous colonic and liver resection should be undertaken in selected patients with synchronous colorectal liver resection regardless of the extent of hepatectomy; major liver resection, in fact, seems capable of providing better oncological results, allowing resection of liver micrometastases that, in almost one-third of the patients, are located in the same liver lobe of macroscopic lesions, without increased morbidity rates.
