CHNG Summary Clinical presentation of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is non-specific and isolation of all suspected patients is difficult because of the limited availability of isolation facilities. We studied changes in haematological parameters in SARS patients using median values analysed according to the day of symptom onset. White cell (WCC), absolute neutrophil, absolute lymphocyte (ALC) and platelet counts followed a v-shaped trend with the nadir at day 6 or 7 after symptom onset except for ALC in the ICU group that had not reached the nadir by day 12. None of our patients had a platelet count < 80 × 109/l and WCC < 2 × 109/l in the first 5 days of symptoms and these parameters may allow early stratification of febrile patients into likely and unlikely SARS cases to allow effective utilization of isolation facilities. On multivariate analysis, age is the only independent predictor for ICU admission. [source] Effect of addition of soybean trypsin inhibitor to colostrum on immunological status in goat kidsJOURNAL OF ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY AND NUTRITION, Issue 1 2010J. J. Ramos Summary The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of soybean trypsin inhibitor (TI) on immunoglobulin G (IgG) serum levels and growth in neonatal goat kids. Twenty-four newborn kids were fed with natural colostrum (group A), and 24 kids received the same colostrum with 1 g of TI per litre (group B). Blood samples were obtained at birth and on days 1, 2 and 4 of life to analyze serum proteins, IgG and haematological parameters. There were no clinical signs of disease and no significant differences in body weight between the groups. Haematological parameters were not affected by treatment. The peak of serum IgG was reached at 24 h of life, but no effects of soybean TI was observed on serum IgG levels. The apparent efficiency of absorption of IgG was similar in both groups (group A 24.5% vs. group B 25.2%, p > 0.05). The addition of TI to colostrum did not change the concentration of serum proteins and their fractions in goat kids. The correlation between serum IgG and ,-globulin was positive and significant (p < 0.01, r = 0.64) in group A, but not in group B (p > 0.05, r = 0.08), suggesting a negative influence of soybean TI on ,-globulin absorption. These results show that addition of soybean TI to colostrum did not improve the performance or immunological status in goat kids. [source] Growth, haematological parameters and tissue lipid peroxidation of soft-shelled turtles, Pelodiscus sinensis, fed diets supplemented with different levels of ferrous sulphateAQUACULTURE NUTRITION, Issue 1 2009J.-H. CHU Abstract Soft-shelled turtles, Pelodiscus sinensis, with an average weight of 5.55 g, were fed diets supplemented with eight levels of ferrous sulphate for 8 weeks. The analysed iron content ranged from 50.8 to 482.9 mg kg,1. Growth rate of turtles fed the control diet with no iron supplementation was the lowest among all dietary groups. Haematological parameters including red blood cell, haemoglobin, haematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration of the turtles fed the control diet were also significantly (P < 0.05) lower relative to the other groups. Thus, dietary iron at 50.8 mg kg,1 (no supplemented iron) was deemed deficient for growth and ineffective at preventing anaemia in juvenile soft-shelled turtle. Whereas, a supplementation of 50 mg kg,1 ferrous sulphate (a total dietary iron of 91.8 mg kg,1) was enough to normalize the haematological values of soft-shelled turtles to the level similar to other iron supplement-fed groups. Within the tested dietary iron range, liver iron content curve-linearly (r2 = 0.99) increased with increasing dietary iron level. Furthermore, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in liver tissues of the turtles have also increased when liver iron content increased. The dietary iron requirement of soft-shelled turtle is 120,198 mg kg,1 when ferrous sulphate is used as the source of iron. [source] Marine yeast diet confers better protection than its cell wall component (1-3)-,- d -glucan as an immunostimulant in Fenneropenaeus indicusAQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 15 2009Thavarool Puthiyedathu Sajeevan Abstract A comparative study was performed to evaluate the immunostimulatory effect of yeast and yeast-derived glucan in white prawn Fenneropenaeus indicus (sub-adults of ,20 gm). Feed with a whole cell biomass of marine yeast Candida sake S165 (CSY) at a concentration of 10% (w/w) and another feed with 0.2% glucan of C. sake S165 (CSG) were used in the study. Fenneropenaeus indicus were fed with these diets for 40 days and subsequently challenged with the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). Haematological parameters such as the total haemocyte count, phenoloxidase activity, superoxide anion (O2,) level, haemolymph peroxidase level and post-challenge survival against WSSV infection were determined to assess the immune status. In the present experiment, a higher immunity index and post-challenge survival were recorded in shrimps fed with the whole cell yeast diet. The better immunostimulatory performance of the whole cell yeast diet compared with the glucan diet could be attributed to the cellular constituents of yeast including the cell wall glucan, nucleotides, carotenoid pigments and vitamins. Here we observed that whole cell yeast performed better as an immunostimulant than the extracted cell wall glucans. Therefore, the use of yeast biomass in diets, rather than the yeast cell wall extract, glucan, would confer better protection against microbial infection besides reducing the cost of shrimp production. [source] Haematological response and growth performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) fed diets containing folic acidAQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 8 2009Margarida Maria Barros Abstract Haematological response and growth performance over 150 days, and resistance to a low-temperature stress of Nile tilapia fed diets with increasing folic acid (FA) levels were evaluated. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with eight FA levels (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 mg kg,1 feed) supplemented in purified diets (32.0% CP and 13 398 kj DE kg,1). One hundred and ninety-two fingerlings were randomly assigned to 32 net cages distributed in eight 1000 L aquaria with a physical and biological filter and a temperature control system (26.0 ± 1.0 °C). For cold-induced stress, fish were transferred to 24 30 L-aquaria with individual biofilters and aeration. The water temperature was gradually reduced until it reached 13 °C. Haematological parameters evaluated before and after cold stress were total erythrocytes and leucocytes count, differential leucocyte, haemoglobin, haematocrit, total plasmatic protein and haematometric indices. Growth performance parameters were mean weight gain, feed conversion ratio and survival. Dietary FA supplementation did not influence erythropoiesis under normal temperature conditions; cold stress impaired erythropoiesis, causing hypochromic microcytic anaemia and leucopoiesis, and also neutrophilia. Growth performance is influenced by folate and supplementation between 0.5 and 1.0 mg FA kg,1 diet, which makes up for nutritional demands, guaranteeing production and health under appropriate temperature conditions. [source] Effects of sulfamerazine on selected haematological and immunological parameters in rainbow trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum, 1792)AQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 4 2009Naim Saglam Abstract In the present study, effects of sulfamerazine on some haematological and immunological parameters of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were examined. Four groups of rainbow trout were fed experimental diets containing either no sulfamerazine (control) or supplemented with sulfamerazine at 100 mg kg,1 (Exp-A), 200 mg kg,1 (Exp-B) or 400 mg kg,1 (Exp-C) for 21 days. Blood samples were taken for the haematological and immunological parameters from fish on the third, seventh, 14th and 21st days of feeding. Haematological parameters [haematocrit, leucocrit, numbers of erythrocytes (RBC) and leucocytes (WBC), haemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean haemoglobin concentration (MHC) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC)] and immunological parameters [phagocytic ratio (PR) and index (PI), glass-adherent NBT-positive cell activation, total plasma protein and total immunoglobulin (Ig)] were evaluated during the experimental trial. It has been observed that MCV (P<0.05), PR and PI (P>0.05) were increased and haematocrit and leucocrit value, numbers of erythrocytes and leucocyte, haemoglobin, MHC and MCHC values and total plasma protein and total Ig levels were decreased in rainbow trout after application of three different doses of sulfamerazine. [source] Nitrite-Induced Methemoglobinaemia Affects Blood Ionized and Total Magnesium Level by Hydrolysis of Plasma Adenosine Triphosphate in RatBASIC AND CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY & TOXICOLOGY, Issue 5 2009Md. Mizanur Rahman This study was performed on male Sprague,Dawley rats to which NaNO2 was injected (10 mg/kg i.p.) to induce methemoglobinaemia. Methemoglobin (MetHb) in blood was measured before (0 min.) and after 10, 30, 60 and 120 min. of NaNO2 injection. At respective time points, the tMg2+, blood ions and gases were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry and ion selective electrode, respectively. Haematological parameters were checked by automatic blood cell count, and blood films were observed under light microscope. Plasma ATP was measured by bioluminescence assay using a luminometer, and plasma proteins were measured by an automatic analyser. Blood cell count (RBC, WBC and platelet), haematocrit, and haemoglobin were found to be decreased with the advancement of MetHb concentration. With the gradual increase of MetHb concentration, the plasma ATP decreased and blood iMg2+ and plasma tMg2+ increased significantly as time passed by in comparison with the pre-drug values. A significant decrease of the ratio of ionized calcium to iMg2+, Na+ and increase of K+ was observed. In conclusion, NaNO2 -induced methemoglobinaemia is a cause of hydrolysis of plasma ATP which is responsible for the increase of blood iMg2+ and plasma tMg2+ in rats. [source] Idiopathic typhlocolitis in 40 aged donkeysEQUINE VETERINARY EDUCATION, Issue 2 2010N. Du Toit Summary Typhlocolitis was diagnosed in 40 aged donkeys at routine post mortem examinations subjected to euthanasia for colic-related clinical signs at The Donkey Sanctuary. Gross pathological changes included oedema, ulceration and haemorrhage involving the caecum and ventral colon. Histopathology indicated endoparasite and bacterial associated inflammation in 20 and 11 cases, respectively. Bacterial culture in 18 cases did not yield a definite aetiological agent. Other management and stress related factors were looked at to identify obvious risk factors. This report describes the clinical, biochemical and haematological parameters and pathological changes observed in 40 donkeys diagnosed with typhlocolitis. [source] Behaviour of haematological parameters in athletes performing marathons and ultramarathons in altitude (,skyrunners')INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF LABORATORY HEMATOLOGY, Issue 6 2004G. BANFI Summary We observed athletes performing marathons and ultramarathons in altitude over several years to study the behaviour of haematological parameters in order to screen eventual paraphysiological or pathological conditions (sports anaemia). We collected samples from 124 athletes participating in seven races; 23 athletes were recruited in different races: 16 for four times, four for three times, and three for two times. The pre- and post-race values of erythrocytes, haemoglobin and packed cell volume did not show statistically significant differences in the studied athletes. The erythrocytes' indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC) and red cell distribution width (RDW) also were not significantly modified by the strenuous effort. The leukocytes were significantly increased because of immunological involvement during the endurance performance. Platelets and relative indices were not significantly modified. The stability of packed cell volume and haemoglobin in athletes performing training and races in altitude is strong evidence for the use of these parameters as an index of general health status and for illustrating possible abnormal increase because of exogenous stimulation of bone marrow. The preanalytical and analytical accuracy is crucial to assure clinical validity of the collected data: we strictly observed international recommendations in this field. [source] Tissue histopathology, clinical chemistry and behaviour of adult comt -gene-disrupted miceJOURNAL OF APPLIED TOXICOLOGY, Issue 4 2003Kristiina Haasio Abstract Catechol- O -methyltransferase (COMT) enzyme is a widely distributed enzyme that catalyses O -methylation of catecholamines and other compounds having a catechol structure. Because there has been some concern about the consequences of a low COMT activity in the development of oestrogen-dependent cancers and because one of the COMT inhibitors, tolcapone, has caused serious liver injuries in Parkinsonian patients, the histopathology and clinical chemistry of Comt -gene-disrupted mice were studied at the age of 12 months. Owing to the high COMT activities in liver and kidney and the role of COMT in the metabolism of catechol oestrogens, special emphasis was given to the histology of the liver, kidney and oestrogen-dependent organs such as mammary glands and uterus. The mice of both heterozygous and homozygous genotypes appear to be physically healthy and fertile. Diurnal motility rhythm and behaviour in measuring anxiety and depression were equal in all genotypes. At the age of 12 months, the body weight of homozygous mice was 7,9% lower than that of the other groups. This was re,ected in histology as a diminished incidence of vacuolation of liver cells (fatty change). Macroscopic pathology and histopathology revealed no abnormal ,ndings in any COMT genotype. The values of some clinical chemistry parameters, such as alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, urea, glucose, calcium and proteins, were at a higher level in homozygous animals compared with the wild-type mice. However, all the values remained within the normal physiological range, and the differences in enzyme levels between genotypes were not re,ected as histopathological ,ndings in the relevant organs. No changes in haematological parameters or plasma catecholamine concentrations were noted but plasma 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethylene glycol levels were high in COMT null mice. [source] Effect of garlic consumption on total antioxidant status and some biochemical and haematological parameters in blood of ratsJOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 8 2009Alireza Zamani Abstract BACKGROUND: The effect of diet garlic supplementation on total antioxidant status (TAS), nitric oxide (NO) and routine biochemical and haematological parameters was investigated in blood of rats. A total of 30 male rats were divided equally into two groups. Each of 15 rats of treatment group was fed 600 mg kg,1 garlic solution in distilled water by gavage and controls only received distilled water. After garlic consumption for 1 month, blood serum total antioxidant, nitrate and some biochemical and haematological tests including serum lipids parameters, blood sugar, complete blood count (CBC), and haemoglobin were measured. RESULTS: The garlic treatment group showed significantly increase in the mean level of TAS from 0.77 ± 0.10 mol L,1 to 1.18 ± 0.11 mol L,1 (P < 0.01) and nitrate (a NO metabolite) from 0.78 ± 0.06 µmol L,1 to 1.44 ± 0.27 µmol L,1 (P < 0.05) in the blood sera of rats compared with the controls. There were no significant differences between the routine biochemical and haematological parameters. CONCLUSION: Garlic consumption should have antioxidant properties and may not affect the lipids profile and total blood cell counts. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Incidence of side-effects associated with high-dose ferric gluconate in patients with severe chronic renal failureNEPHROLOGY, Issue 1 2003BAHAR BASTANI SUMMARY: Ferric gluconate complex in sucrose (FerrlecitÔ) has been associated with less side-effects than iron dextran; however, the recommended dose of 62.5,125 mg per treatment is only suitable for haemodialysis (HD) patients. We retrospectively analysed the incidence of the side-effects associated with a high dose of FerrlecitÔ infusion (20 treatments in 13 patients; 10 treatments of 250 mg/3,4 h, and 10 treatments of 500 mg/5 h infusion). The patients were in the age range of 32,75 years old, seven with chronic renal failure (CRF), and six on dialysis treatment. One (10%) of the 10 treatments using a 250 mg dose was complicated with severe nausea/vomiting, diarrhoea and a burning sensation in the feet. Three (30%) of the 10 treatments using a 500 mg dose were complicated with: chills, severe nausea/vomiting, hypotension and syncope in one; severe nausea/vomiting, diarrhoea and hypotension in one; and an episode of vomiting in one patient. A single treatment with a 250 mg dose resulted in no significant change in haematological parameters. A single treatment with a 500 mg dose resulted in a significant increase in haemoglobin (Hgb) and haematocrit (Hct), but only a rising trend in serum iron,% transferrin saturation and ferritin pre versus 1,2 months postinfusion. In conclusion, FerrlecitÔ doses of 250 or 500 mg are complicated with significant untoward reactions in 10,30% of patients, in a dose-dependent fashion. [source] Evaluations of toxicity of Turraeanthus africanus (Méliaceae) in miceANDROLOGIA, Issue 6 2009D. Massoma Lembè Summary Turraeanthus africanus (Meliacaeae) is known to possess a broad spectrum of pharmacological, medicinal and therapeutic properties. However, no extensive safety studies have been conducted on these extracts to date. The aim of this study was to evaluate toxicity of the aqueous extract of Turraeanthus africanus (Meliacaeae) after oral and intraperitoneal administration in mice. The acute toxicity was evaluated after single daily administration of the aqueous extract orally at doses of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 g kg,1 or by the intraperitoneal route at doses of 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 g kg,1 of raw material. The subacute toxicity was evaluated only by the intraperitoneal route for 6 weeks at doses of 1.5, 3, 6 g kg,1 of raw material. Oral doses up to 30 g kg,1 of the aqueous extract of Turraeanthus africanus (TA) did not produce mortality or significant changes in the general behaviour and gross appearance of internal organs of rats. However, the intraperitoneal administration of the aqueous extract of Turraeanthus africanus caused dose-dependent lethal effects. The acute intraperitoneal toxicity (LD50) of TA extract in mice was 7.2 g kg,1. In subacute toxicity in mice, after the intraperitoneal administration of TA extract for 6 consecutive weeks, the feed consumption was significantly affected at the dose 3 g kg,1 with P < 0.05 and at the dose 6 g kg,1 with P < 0.001 and consequently had significant effect with P < 0.05 in body weight of animals. Level of triglyceride of treated animals lowered at dose 1.5 g kg,1 with P < 0.001 and at dose 3 g kg,1 and 6 g kg,1 with P < 0.05. Total cholesterol level of treated animals lowered at dose 1.5 g kg,1 with P < 0.005 and at dose 3 and 6 g kg,1 with P < 0.001. HDL cholesterol level of treated animals lowered up to dose 6 g kg,1 with P < 0.05 while levels of LDL cholesterol, serum and tissue creatinine of treated animals lowered at dose 3 g kg,1 and dose 6 g kg,1 with P < 0.05. Serum protein level of treated animal enhanced at dose 1.5 g kg,1 and at dose 6 g kg,1 with P < 0.05 while tissue creatinine level of treated animal enhanced with P < 0.001. The histology of liver, kidney and lung of the treated mice indicated morphological change of these organs (data not shown). No significant difference was observed during treatment concerning the haematological parameters. The results suggest that the plant is not toxic through the oral route in mice and that parenteral administration should be avoided. [source] Polymorphism at the porcine Dominant white/KIT locus influence coat colour and peripheral blood cell measuresANIMAL GENETICS, Issue 4 2005A. Johansson Summary We have examined the phenotype of different KIT genotypes with regard to coat colour and several blood parameters (erythrocyte numbers and measures, total and differential leucocyte numbers, haematocrit and haemoglobin levels and serum components). The effect of two different iron supplement regimes (one or two iron injections) on the blood parameters was also examined. For a total of 184 cross-bred piglets (different combinations of Hampshire, Landrace and Yorkshire) blood parameters were measured four times during their first month of life, and the KIT genotypes of these and 70 additional cross-bred piglets were determined. Eight different KIT genotypes were identified, which confirms the large allelic diversity at the KIT locus in commercial pig populations. The results showed that pigs with different KIT genotypes differ both in coat colour and in haematological parameters. In general, homozygous Dominant white (I/I) piglets had larger erythrocytes with lower haemoglobin concentration, indicating a mild macrocytic anaemia. The effect of two compared with one iron injection was also most pronounced for the I/I piglets. [source] Effects of dietary zinc levels on growth, serum zinc, haematological parameters and tissue trace elements of soft-shelled turtles, Pelodiscus sinensisAQUACULTURE NUTRITION, Issue 3 2010S.-C. HUANG Abstract A 10-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary zinc (Zn) contents on the growth, tissue trace element contents and serum Zn levels in soft-shelled turtles, Pelodiscus sinensis. Juvenile soft-shelled turtles approximately 4.8 g in body weight were fed casein-based diets containing seven levels of Zn (14, 23, 32, 43, 58, 87 and 100 mg kg,1) for 10 weeks. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in weight gain (WG), feed conversion ratio (FCR) or protein efficiency ratio (PER) among the dietary treatments. However, Zn concentrations in the liver, serum and carapace of turtles fed the basal diet containing 14 mg Zn kg,1 were the lowest among all groups. Zn contents in the liver, serum and carapace increased when dietary Zn increased up to a dietary Zn level of approximately 43 mg kg,1. Beyond this dietary level, tissue Zn contents were relatively constant. Carapace iron (Fe), selenium (Se) in hard tissues and haemoglobin concentrations decreased when dietary Zn increased. Dietary Zn requirements of juvenile soft-shelled turtles derived from regression modelling using the liver, serum, carapace and bone Zn contents as indicators were 42, 39, 35 and 46 mg Zn kg,1, respectively. MISRA Abstract The study was to determine the effect of long-term administration of different dosages of levamisole on growth, immune response and disease resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila & Edwardsiella tarda in Labeo rohita fingerlings. Fish were fed with four different dosages of levamisole (0, 125, 250 and 500 mg kg,1 diet) for 56 days. Different serum biochemical and haematological parameters such as serum total protein content, albumin content, globulin content, albumin/globulin ratio, glucose content, leucocytes count; cellular immune parameters including superoxide anion production, phagocytic activities, lymphokine production index; humoural immune parameters including lysozyme, complement and serum bactericidal activities were evaluated after 14 days interval. After 56 days, fish were divided into two subgroups under each treatment group for challenge with pathogens A. hydrophila and E. tarda. The cumulative mortality (%) and agglutinating antibody titre was recorded on 28th day postchallenge. WBC count, phagocytic ratio, lymphokine production index, lysozyme activity and serum bactericidal activity were increased upon administration of levamisole dosages for long term. CHU Abstract Soft-shelled turtles, Pelodiscus sinensis, with an average weight of 5.55 g, were fed diets supplemented with eight levels of ferrous sulphate for 8 weeks. The analysed iron content ranged from 50.8 to 482.9 mg kg,1. Growth rate of turtles fed the control diet with no iron supplementation was the lowest among all dietary groups. Haematological parameters including red blood cell, haemoglobin, haematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration of the turtles fed the control diet were also significantly (P < 0.05) lower relative to the other groups. Thus, dietary iron at 50.8 mg kg,1 (no supplemented iron) was deemed deficient for growth and ineffective at preventing anaemia in juvenile soft-shelled turtle. Whereas, a supplementation of 50 mg kg,1 ferrous sulphate (a total dietary iron of 91.8 mg kg,1) was enough to normalize the haematological values of soft-shelled turtles to the level similar to other iron supplement-fed groups. Within the tested dietary iron range, liver iron content curve-linearly (r2 = 0.99) increased with increasing dietary iron level. Furthermore, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in liver tissues of the turtles have also increased when liver iron content increased. Two doses of each probiotic (5 and 10 g kg,1 of food) were added to the diets and fed to frogs, totalling five treatments over 112 days. Haematological analyses consisted of total and differential leucocyte counts, erythrocyte and thrombocyte counts, haematocrit, haemoglobin levels and RBC indices (mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin , and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration) and the immunological parameters included phagocytic capacity and phagocytic index of peritoneal phagocytes. The results showed that the probiotics did not significantly influence any of the haematological parameters measured. However, immunological assays showed that the probiotics had an immunostimulating effect. The greatest effects were seen with probiotic P1 fed at a dose of 10 g kg,1 of diet and probiotic P2 fed at 5 g kg,1 of diet. As protein is the limiting component for fish food, the utilization of lipids or carbohydrates as partial substitutes of this nutrient is a challenge to improve its use. In order to get an approximation of the maximum levels of utilization for carbohydrates and/or lipids and determine the most adequate macronutrient to partly replace protein as the main energy source of diets for dentex (91.7 ± 1.4 g mean weight), four experimental diets with different protein:lipid:carbohydrate percentages (43/16/28, 43/24/4, 38/19/28 and 38/24/13) were tested for 13 weeks. The results indicated the possibility of using 38% of dietary protein without affecting growth performance, under the experimental conditions. There were no differences among the four diets either in most of the nutritive utilization indicators or in the body composition and haematological parameters. The influence of dietary composition was only observed in the feed intake, being higher with more dietary carbohydrates, and the hepatosomatic index and protein efficiency ratio, showing more elevated values in diets with a higher lipid level. The dentex capacity of using both carbohydrates and lipids efficiently to obtain the necessary energy for its correct growth, as well as to compensate the energetic ,vacuum' caused by the dietary protein reduction, under the assayed conditions, was confirmed. [source] Effects of different photoperiods on growth, stress and haematological parameters in juvenile great sturgeon Huso husoAQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 16 2009Ali Bani Abstract The effects of constant light (24L:00D), no light (00L:24D) and two light,dark periods (18L:06D;12L:12D) on the growth, stress and haematological variables were assessed in juvenile great sturgeon, Huso huso. During the 8-week experimental period, juveniles (22.5 ± 0.6 g) were kept under a 150 lx light intensity in fibreglass tanks (0.8 m2, 500 L). Differences in growth were insignificant during the experiment, but lactate levels were higher in the 00L:24D and 24L:00D photoperiods compared with 12L:12D and 18L:06D photoperiods. Cortisol levels did not show differences among the various photoperiods. At the end of the experimental period, fish reared under a 12L:12D photoperiod had higher haemoglobin values and erythrocyte numbers than in the other photoperiods, while no differences were found between groups with regard to haematocrit values or leucocyte numbers. The highest survival rate (89%) was observed in the 12L:12D period in which the levels of lactate and cortisol as stress indicators were minimal. The results indicate that various photoperiods cause different stress levels in juvenile great sturgeon and have no significant effects on growth, at least in short time periods. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish at 10-day intervals (1,10, 20,30 and 40,50 with non-supplemented diets and 10,20, 30,40 and 50,60 with supplemented diets). Results showed that fish fed diets containing Ergosan had significantly higher growth than the control group (P<0.05). Survival was not different among all dietary treatments (P>0.05). Food conversion ratio in the fish fed a diet containing 4.0 and 6.0 g kg,1 Ergosan was significantly better than the other treatments (P<0.05), whereas protein efficiency ratio was not different between experimental diets. Lymphocyte count in the fish fed diets containing Ergosan was higher than the other treatments. Haematocrit, haemoglobin (Hb) concentration, number of erythrocytes, total leucocytes, monocyte, eosinophil, myelocyte, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration were not different between treatments. Neutrophil count in the control group was higher than the fish fed supplemented diets. Furthermore, whole body lipid, moisture and fibre were not different among dietary treatments (P>0.05) but body protein in the fish fed a diet containing Ergosan at the level of 2.0 and 4.0 g kg,1 was higher than the other treatments. Whole body ash content was higher in the control group. [source] Effects of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene on growth and haematological parameters in Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli (Hilgendorf)AQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 5 2006Jung-Hoon Jee Abstract The objectives of the present experiment were to determine the effects on growth factors and some haematological parameters in Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeil, after dietary 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) exposure at 0.6, 1.2, 2.4 and 4.8 mg kg,1 diet for 8 weeks. The specific growth rate of the fish exposed to DMBA (,1.2 mg kg,1) showed significantly lower performance than the control. Following 8 weeks of exposure, the DMBA-exposed groups (2.4 and 4.8 mg kg,1) had a significantly higher mean hepatosomatic index. Condition factor of the fish exposed to DMBA did not show any statistically significant deviation from the control (P>0.05), although the mean values were somewhat lower than those of the control group. Observations on haematological parameters indicated DMBA treatment induced a severe anaemia. Total protein, albumin and total cholesterol concentrations decreased following exposure to DMBA at 2.4 and 4.8 mg kg,1. In contrast, serum bilirubin and blood urea nitrogen in fish exposed to DMBA increased. Significant decreases in serum electrolytes, chloride, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium, and osmolality were observed in all DMBA-treatment groups. All DMBA-treatment groups showed a significantly higher activity of lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase. Serum transaminase activity after the highest level of 4.8 mg kg,1 DMBA was significantly increased. The key finding from this study is that rockfish exposed to dietary DMBA at concentrations of 1.2 and 2.4 mg kg,1 diet are likely to experience adverse impacts in growth and haematological property respectively. [source] Erythrocytic pyruvate kinase deficiency and AB blood types in Australian Abyssinian and Somali catsAUSTRALIAN VETERINARY JOURNAL, Issue 1-2 2009VR Barrs Objective,, To determine the frequency of the mutant pyruvate kinase (PK) allele, haematological parameters and AB blood types of Abyssinian and Somali cats in Australia. Design,, Complete blood cell and reticulocyte counts, DNA PK mutation testing and blood typing were performed in all cats. Results,, A total of 60 cats (36 Abyssinians, 24 Somalis) were included (37 females, 23 males). For the mutant PK allele, three female Somalis were homozygous (affected, 5%), 17 cats were heterozygous (carrier, 28%) and 40 cats tested negative (normal, 67%). Pedigree analysis revealed common ancestry of affected and many carrier cats. Of affected cats, two had regenerative anaemias and all had reticulocytosis (range 64,390 × 109/L; P < 0.001 compared with normal or carrier cats). The only consistent historical sign was lethargy. One affected cat was euthanased 18 months after testing, because of anaemia, neutropenia, anorexia and weight loss. The mutant allele frequency was 0.19 overall (0.29 in Somalis, 0.13 in Abyssinians). All cats had blood type A. The commercial blood typing card method incorrectly identified 12 cats as having type AB blood. Conclusions,, The frequency of the mutant PK allele is high in Australia. Screening for PK deficiency is indicated before mating and in individual cats of these breeds, even in the absence of anaemia and especially when there is reticulocytosis. Although all cats in the present study had blood type A, blood type B is common in these breeds worldwide. Retyping of any AB typed cats by a laboratory technique is recommended. While their individual haematological effects are well described, few studies describe their effects when inherited together. We present data from the Kenyan coast, which suggest that HbAS and ,+ -thalassaemia may interact to produce specific effects on haematological parameters. Overall, the difference in Hb concentrations between non-thalassaemics (,,/,,) and ,+ -thalassaemia homozygotes (,,/,,) was greater in non-HbAS (HbAA) (0·63 g/dl) than in HbAS children (0·25 g/dl). [source] Early iron supplementation in very low birth weight infants , a randomized controlled trialACTA PAEDIATRICA, Issue 6 2009Mari Jeeva Sankar Abstract Aim: To evaluate if supplementing iron at 2 weeks of age improves serum ferritin and/or haematological parameters at 2 months of life in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Methods: Preterm VLBW infants who received at least 100 mL/kg/day of oral feeds by day 14 of life were randomized to either ,early iron' (3,4 mg/kg/day orally from 2 weeks) or ,control' (no iron until 60 days) groups. Infants were followed up fortnightly and all morbidities were prospectively recorded. Serum ferritin was measured at 60 days by enzyme immunoassay method. Results: Forty-six infants were included in the study; primary outcome was available for 42 infants. There was no difference in either serum ferritin (mean: 50.8 vs. 45.3 ,g/L; adjusted difference in means: 5.8, 95% CI: ,3.0, 14.6; p = 0.19) or haematocrit (32.5 ± 5.3 vs. 30.8 ± 6.3%; p = 0.35) at 60 days between the early iron and control groups. The magnitude of fall in serum ferritin from baseline to the end of study period was also not different between the groups (4.9 vs. 13.8 ,g/L; difference in means: 8.8; 95% CI: ,0.3, 17.9; p = 0.06). The requirement of blood transfusions (9.5 vs. 13%; p = 0.63) and a composite outcome of common neonatal morbidities (19% vs. 21.7%; p = 0.55) were also not different between the two groups. Conclusion: Supplementing iron at 2 weeks of age in preterm VLBW infants did not improve either serum ferritin or the haematological parameters at 2 months when compared to the standard practice of starting iron from 8 weeks of age.
