Foot abnormalities in Canadian Aboriginal adolescents with Type 2 diabetes

Abstract Aims To determine the profile of foot abnormalities in Canadian Aboriginal adolescents with Type 2 diabetes and the risk factors associated with these abnormalities. Methods Aboriginal adolescents with Type 2 diabetes underwent an interview, medical record review and foot examination in a tertiary care, paediatric hospital diabetes clinic and two geographically remote outreach clinics. The notes of 110 subjects were reviewed [mean age 15 ± 3 years; mean duration of diabetes, 30 ± 20 months; 71 (66%) female and 39 (34%) male] and 77 (70%) of the subjects were examined. Results Foot abnormalities were identified by either interview or notes review, and included poor toenail condition in 85 (77%), paronychia in 29 (26%), ingrowing toenails in 16 (15%) and neuropathic symptoms in 13 (12%) subjects. Foot abnormalities were identified by examination in many subjects, including poor toenail condition in 38 (49%), calluses in 34 (44%) and paronychia in 13 (17%) subjects. Eighteen (24%) of 75 subjects did not have running water in the home. Factors that significantly increased the presence of foot abnormalities included: foot care provided by a person other than self; absence of running water in the home; decreased frequency of bathing; and decreased frequency of nail clipping. A greater percentage of subjects living on a reservation or rural community had specialized consultations for retinal examination, footwear, or both than of those living in an urban or unknown residence. Conclusions A high prevalence of foot abnormalities was noted in Aboriginal adolescents with Type 2 diabetes. These findings highlight the associated comorbidities in this population, emphasizing the need for early detection and intervention. [source]


Increased TLR responses in dendritic cells lacking the ITAM-containing adapters DAP12 and FcR,

Abstract The inhibitory effect of DAP12 on macrophages has been revealed by examining myeloid cells from DAP12-deficient mice. In this report, we demonstrate that both DAP12 and the Fc,RI,-chain (FcR,) are required for negative regulation of TLR responses in bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DC). Loss of both DAP12 and FcR, enhanced the pro-inflammatory cytokine production and maturation of DC after TLR stimulation, resulting in a greater percentage of DC that produced IL-12 p40, TNF, and IL-6, and expressed high levels of MHC class II, CD80, and CD86. Whereas DC lacking only DAP12 showed some increased TLR responses, those lacking only FcR, had a greater enhancement of maturation and cytokine production, though to a lesser extent than DC lacking both DAP12 and FcR,. Additionally, antigen-specific T cell proliferation was enhanced by DAP12,/,FcR,,/, DC relative to wild-type DC after maturation. Similar to DAP12,/,FcR,,/, DC, Syk-deficient DC also had increased inflammatory cytokine production, maturation, and antigen presentation. These results confirm the inhibitory effect of immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM) signaling in myeloid cells and show that DC and macrophages differ in their dependence on the ITAM-containing adapters DAP12 and FcR, for negative regulation of TLR signaling. Age-related changes in dopamine transporters and accumulation of 3-nitrotyrosine in rhesus monkey midbrain dopamine neurons: Relevance in selective neuronal vulnerability to degeneration

Abstract Aging is the strongest risk factor for developing Parkinson's disease (PD). There is a preferential loss of dopamine (DA) neurons in the ventral tier of the substantia nigra (vtSN) compared to the dorsal tier and ventral tegmental area (VTA) in PD. Examining age-related and region-specific differences in DA neurons represents a means of identifying factors potentially involved in vulnerability or resistance to degeneration. Nitrative stress is among the factors potentially underlying DA neuron degeneration. We studied the relationship between 3-nitrotyrosine (3NT; a marker of nitrative damage) and DA transporters [DA transporter (DAT) and vesicular monoamine transporter-2 (VMAT)] during aging in DA subregions of rhesus monkeys. The percentage of DA neurons containing 3NT increased significantly only in the vtSN with advancing age, and the vtSN had a greater percentage of 3NT-positive neurons when compared to the VTA. The relationship between 3NT and DA transporters was determined by measuring fluorescence intensity of 3NT, DAT and VMAT staining. 3NT intensity increased with advancing age in the vtSN. Increased DAT, VMAT and DAT/VMAT ratios were associated with increased 3NT in individual DA neurons. These results suggest nitrative damage accumulates in midbrain DA neurons with advancing age, an effect exacerbated in the vulnerable vtSN. The capacity of a DA neuron to accumulate more cytosolic DA, as inferred from DA transporter expression, is related to accumulation of nitrative damage. These findings are consistent with a role for aging-related accrual of nitrative damage in the selective vulnerability of vtSN neurons to degeneration in PD. [source]


Women in Academic Emergency Medicine

Abstract. Objective: To evaluate the achievement gof women in academic emergency medicine (EM) relative to men. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional mail survey of all emergency physicians who were employed at three-fourths full-time equivalent or greater at the 105 EM residency programs in the United States from August 1997 to December 1997. The following information was obtained: demographics, training and practice issues, roles and responsibilities in academic EM, percentage of time spent per week in clinical practice, teaching, administrative and research activities, academic productivity, and funding. Results: Of the 1,575 self-administered questionnaires distributed by the office of the chairs, 1,197 (76%) were returned. Two hundred seventy-four (23%) of the respondents were women, and 923 (77%) were men. There was a significant difference noted between men and women in all demographic categories. The numbers of respondents who were nonwhite were extremely small in the sample and, therefore, the authors are hesitant to draw any conclusions based on race/ethnicity. There was no difference in training in EM between men and women (82% vs 82%, p = 0.288), but a significantly higher proportion of male respondents were board-certified in EM (84% vs 76%, p < 0.002). Women in academic EM were less likely to hold major leadership positions, spent a greater percentage of time in clinical and teaching activities, published less in peer-reviewed journals, and were less likely to achieve senior academic rank in their medical schools. Conclusions: These findings mirror those of most medical specialties: academic achievement of women in academic EM lags behind that of men. The paucity of minority physicians in academic EM didn't permit analysis of their academic achievements. [source]


Defoliation alters water uptake by deep and shallow roots of Prosopis velutina (Velvet Mesquite)

Summary 1Prosopis velutina Woot. (Velvet Mesquite) at a site with limited groundwater availability derived a greater percentage of water from shallow soil at the onset of the summer rainy season than did trees at a site with greater availability of groundwater. Predawn leaf water potentials (,pd) were not a strong indicator of shallow water use for this species with roots in multiple soil layers. 2We experimentally defoliated P. velutina plants to determine if reduced-canopy photosynthesis would alter vertical patterns of root activity. After natural rain events, hydrogen isotope ratios of xylem sap indicated that defoliated P. velutina took up a greater percentage of its water from shallow soils than did undefoliated plants. 3Irrigation with deuterium-labelled water further demonstrated that undefoliated plants were able to use shallow soil water. Defoliation appeared to affect the ability of trees to use deep-water sources. 4Reduced carbon assimilation limited water uptake from deep soil layers. These data highlight that there are internal physiological controls on carbon allocation that may limit water uptake from different soil layers. During periods of high vapour pressure deficit or soil drought, when leaf gas exchange and carbon assimilation decline, this may create positive feedbacks where plants are unable to forage for deep water due to carbon limitations. Nectar ,theft' by hummingbird flower mites and its consequences for seed set in Moussonia deppeana

Summary 1,Mites (Acari: Mesostigmata: Ascidae) that live and feed in the flowers of about 100 plant species are transported in the nares of hummingbirds (Trochilidae). Mites may compete with hummingbirds for nectar secreted by the host plants, and this could affect the dynamics and reproductive outcomes of the mutualism between plants and their pollinating hummingbirds. 2,Here we combined field observations and experimental manipulations to assess the role of hummingbird flower mites (Tropicoseius sp. nov.) on nectar secretion and reproductive output of protandrous Moussonia deppeana (Schlecht. & Cham.) Hanst. (Gesneriaceae) during their flowering period in a cloud forest remnant. 3,During the 4 days that the flowers of M. deppeana last, flowers were visited exclusively by hummingbirds (Lampornis amethystinus). Bud production per inflorescence peaked in December. There were few open flowers per inflorescence in November, but numbers increased as the flowering season progressed (December and January). 4,The availability of each flower phase differed over the flowering season. Staminate-phase flowers were more abundant over the flowering season than pistillate-phase flowers. These differences were statistically significant over time. 5,Nectar availability was reduced by up to 50% in the presence of hummingbird flower mites. Over the 4 days of observation, significantly more nectar was secreted to flowers from which mites were excluded than to flowers with no mite exclusion. The same effect was observed during flowering, but mites consumed a greater percentage of the total nectar secreted in December. 6,Significantly more nectar was secreted during the staminate phase than in the pistillate phase, independent of time and treatment. 7,A manual pollination experiment suggested that mites act like secondary pollinators in this self-compatible, non-autogamous plant, at least in flowers that were not pollinated manually and had no access to pollinating hummingbirds. 8,Although seed production was not reduced significantly by flower mites, our results suggest that the presence of floral mites can affect pollen transmission, as the amount of nectar available to hummingbirds was reduced drastically. This can directly affect hummingbird foraging patterns and reduce the fitness of the host plants. [source]


Estimating the Variability of Active-Layer Thaw Depth in Two Physiographic Regions of Northern Alaska

The active layer is the zone above permafrost that experiences seasonal freeze and thaw. Active-layer thickness varies annually in response to air and surface temperature, and generally decreases poleward. Substantially less is known about thaw variability across small lateral distances in response to topography, parent material, vegetation, and subsurface hydrology. A graduated steel rod was used to measure the 1998 end-of-season thaw depth across several transects. A balanced hierarchical sampling design was used to estimate the contribution to total variance in active-layer depth at separating distances of 1, 3, 9, 27, and 100 meters. A second sampling scheme was used to examine variation at shorter distances of 0.3 and 0.1 meter. This seven-stage sample design was applied to two sites in the Arctic Foothills physiographic province, and four sites on the Arctic Coastal Plain province in northern Alaska. The spatial variability for each site was determined using ANOVA and variogram methods to compare intersite and inter-province variation. Spatial variation in thaw depth was different in the Foothills and Coastal Plain sites. A greater percentage of the total variance occurs at short lag distances (0,3 meters) at the Foothills sites, presumably reflecting the influence of frost boils and tussock vegetation on ground heat flow. In contrast, thaw variation at the Coastal Plain sites occurs at distances exceeding 10 meters, and is attributed to the influence of well-developed networks of ice-wedge polygons and the presence of drained thaw-lake basins. This information was used to determine an ongoing sampling scheme for each site and to assess the suitability of each method of analysis. [source]


The effect of ocean acidification and temperature on the fertilization and embryonic development of the Sydney rock oyster Saccostrea glomerata (Gould 1850)

Abstract This study investigated the synergistic effects of ocean acidification (caused by elevations in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide pCO2) and temperature on the fertilization and embryonic development of the economically and ecologically important Sydney rock oyster, Saccostrea glomerata (Gould 1850). As pCO2 increased, fertilization significantly decreased. The temperature of 26 °C was the optimum temperature for fertilization, as temperature increased and decreased from this optimum, fertilization decreased. There was also an effect of pCO2 and temperature on embryonic development. Generally as pCO2 increased, the percentage and size of D-veligers decreased and the percentage of D-veligers that were abnormal increased. The optimum temperature was 26 °C and embryonic development decreased at temperatures that were above and below this temperature. Abnormality of D-veligers was greatest at 1000 ppm and 18 and 30 °C (,90%) and least at 375 ppm and 26 °C (,4%). Finally prolonged exposure of elevated pCO2 and temperature across early developmental stages led to fewer D-veligers, more abnormality and smaller sizes in elevated CO2 environments and may lead to lethal effects at suboptimal temperatures. Embryos that were exposed to the pCO2 and temperature treatments for fertilization and embryonic development had fewer D-veligers, greater percentage of abnormality and reduced size than embryos that were exposed to the treatments for embryonic development only. Further at the elevated temperature of 30 °C and 750,1000 ppm, there was no embryonic development. The results of this study suggest that predicted changes in ocean acidification and temperature over the next century may have severe implications for the distribution and abundance of S. glomerata as well as possible implications for the reproduction and development of other marine invertebrates. CD57+ cells in radicular cyst

Aim As CD57 antigen is an important modulator of the immune system, the purpose of the present study was to compare the expression of this antigen on radicular cysts (RC) with hyperplastic or atrophic epithelium. Methodology Twenty cases of RC were retrieved and classified as atrophic or hyperplastic. A biotin-streptavidin amplified system was used for identification of the CD57 receptor. Results The results demonstrated a greater percentage of CD57+ cells in RC with atrophic epithelium compared to hyperplastic epithelium. Conclusion As the expression of CD57 is indicative of immunosuppression, it may constitute a negative immunomodulator of RC's epithelium growth. Further studies are necessary to understand the importance of this cell to the biological activity or inactivity of RC's epithelium development. [source]


Relationship between seminal ascorbic acid and sperm DNA integrity in infertile men

Summary Ascorbic acid has recently been reported to protect sperm DNA from the damage induced by exogenous oxidative stress in vitro. But, there is no report on seminal ascorbic acid and sperm DNA fragmentation in infertile men. In this study, we asked whether sperm DNA damage correlates with seminal ascorbic acid levels. Sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) was analysed in 75 men by flow cytometry after acridine orange staining. We also measured the levels of seminal plasma ascorbic acid and total antioxidant capacity. Abnormal sperm DNA integrity (DFI , 30%) was observed in 12% of the patients with normal semen parameters and in 52% of the patients with abnormal semen parameters. There were significant correlations between the level of DFI and conventional semen parameters including sperm count, motility and morphology (r = ,0.29, ,0.55 and ,0.53 respectively; p < 0.05). Seminal ascorbic acid level was significantly lower in the patients with leucospermia than the patient with normal semen parameters. Interestingly, a significantly greater percentage of men with abnormal DFI were observed in the patients with low levels of seminal ascorbic acid compared with those with normal or high levels of ascorbic acid (59% vs. 33%, p < 0.05). Men with insufficient seminal ascorbic acid frequently have sperm DNA damage. [source]


Prevalence and correlates of eating disorders in Latinos in the United States

Abstract Objective: To present national estimates and correlates of lifetime and 12-month DSM-IV eating disorders for Latinos. Method: Data come from the National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS), a national epidemiological household survey of Latinos in the United States. Results: Latinos have elevated rates of any binge eating and binge eating disorder but low prevalence of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The US born and those living a greater percentage of their lifetime in the US evidenced higher risk for certain eating disorders while severe obesity and low levels of education were significant correlates. Rates of treatment utilization were exceedingly low. Conclusion: Standard eating disorder criteria may not be appropriate for understanding psychological morbidity of eating disorders for Latinos, particularly less acculturated Latinos, due to cultural differences in the presentation of eating disorder symptoms. Criteria for disturbed eating patterns that are more reflective of the illness experience of Latinos should be developed. © 2007 by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source]


Variation in the development of postcranial robusticity: an example from Çatalhöyük, Turkey

Abstract While the study of variation in adult postcranial robusticity has a long history, few analyses have examined the acquisition of postcranial robusticity within an ontogenetic context. This research evaluates differences in the ontogenetic trajectories of immature femora from three samples, in order to assess the point at which differences in levels of adult postcranial robusticity arise during development. Femoral midshaft cross-sectional properties were compared between three diverse samples: Neolithic agriculturalists from Çatalhöyük, Turkey (n,=,42); Byzantine agriculturalists from Çatalhöyük, Turkey (n,=,24); and urban Americans from the Denver Growth Study (n,=,151). While the two adult samples from Çatalhöyük do not differ statistically, both Neolithic and Byzantine adults have relatively larger cortical and total areas than the American urban adults, and these differences are clearly established by the age of six. In addition, by the age of three, individuals from the Denver Growth Study have already attained a greater percentage of their adult length, total area, and cortical area relative to those in both the Neolithic and Byzantine samples. These results indicate that the differing levels of postcranial robusticity characterising adult populations appear relatively early during development, and that populations vary in the rate and pattern through which adult levels of postcranial robusticity are achieved. Morphological sperm defects analyzed by light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy and their correlation with sperm motility

Objectives: To compare sperm defects as assessed by light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and to correlate them with sperm motility. Methods: A cohort of 40 male partners of infertile couples was selected. Group 1 (n = 31) included subjects with motility >5 and <50%, group 2 (n = 9) included those with motility <5% and the control group consisted of 10 normospermic subjects. Semen analysis of morphological parameters was carried out by LM and TEM. Results: A linear correlation between LM and TEM regarding head defects and excess residual cytoplasm (r = 0.87 and 0.90) was found, whereas there was a poor correlation between tail and midpiece anomalies (r = 0.46 and 0.21). No significant variations were detected by LM and TEM regarding sperm head defects and excess residual cytoplasm, whereas TEM showed a significantly greater percentage of tail and midpiece alterations compared with LM in groups 1 and 2, as well as controls (P < 0.05). The microtubular pattern ,<9 + 2' represented the most frequent axonemal morphological alteration. Conclusions: TEM might represent an additional diagnostic tool in the presence of severe sperm hypomotility or absence of motility. [source]


Leaf volatiles as attractants for neonate Helicoverpa armigera Hbn. (Lep., Noctuidae) larvae

The 1st instar Helicoverpa armigera larvae were bioassayed in the laboratory to study their orientational responses towards leaf volatiles of four leguminous crops: chickpea, Cicer arietinum L.; pigeonpea, Cajanus cajan Millsp.; blackgram, Vigna mungo L.; and cowpea, Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.). The gram podborer larvae showed positive orientational responses towards leaves of all four test plants. Whole leaves of chickpea, pigeonpea and blackgram were more attractive for gram podborer larvae than cowpea whole leaves. Larval attraction for crushed (damaged) leaves of chickpea, blackgram and cowpea was significantly higher than the attraction for pigeonpea crushed leaves. The orientational responses of gram podborer larvae for crushed leaves of cowpea were significantly higher compared to whole leaves. However, the whole pigeonpea leaves elicited higher orientational responses than the crushed leaves. Maceration was not observed to affect the attractancy of chickpea and blackgram leaves. Further, the leaves were extracted in n-hexane and methanol. It was observed that the crude extracts of all the test leaves elicited positive orientational responses of larvae. In no-choice tests, the orientational preference of the larvae for the hexane extracts of all the test leaves was statistically equal. Similarly, the methanol extracts of leaves of all the test plants also attracted a greater percentage of larvae in no-choice tests. However, under two-choice bioassays, hexane foliage extract of all the test plants elicited higher orientational responses of larvae compared to the methanolic extracts of same leaves. The results of these bioassays clearly indicate that all the test leaves emit kairomones for gram podborer larvae. Moreover, kairomonal components of these leaves are, at least in part, extractable in hexane and methanol, which are higher in hexane than methanol. [source]


A national survey of trainee impairment in clinical, counseling, and school psychology doctoral programs and internships

The purpose of this study was to assess the frequency, type, and management of trainee impairment at a national level across doctoral programs in clinical, counseling, and school psychology and predoctoral internships. A total of 199 surveys were completed, returned, and usable. In general, doctoral programs reported a greater frequency of trainee impairment than internships. However, a greater percentage of internships had a policy and program in place for managing impairments than did doctoral programs. These findings are compared with past studies and reviews of this issue. In light of these findings, specific implications for training programs are discussed, with the recommendation that training programs address more attention to the assessment and management of such problems. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Taking Television Seriously: A Sound and Image Bite Analysis of Presidential Campaign Coverage, 1992,2004

This study updates and builds on Hallin's landmark investigation of sound-bite news by documenting the prevalence of candidate image bites, where candidates are shown but not heard (as opposed to being shown and heard), in general election news over 4 election cycles. A visual analysis of broadcast network (ABC, CBS, and NBC) news coverage of the 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004 U.S. presidential elections finds that image bites constituted a greater percentage of total campaign coverage than sound bites, with candidates appearing in image bites significantly more than sound bites. Even as candidate sound bites continue to shrink over time, image-bite time is increasing in duration,and candidates are being presented in image bites almost twice as much as journalists. Sound bites are also found to be largely attack and issue focused. Based on these findings, we call for greater appreciation of visual processing, nonverbal communication, and voter learning from television news in the study of media and politics. Résumé Prendre la télévision au sérieux : Une analyse des clips sonores et visuels de la couverture des campagnes électorales présidentielles, 1992-2004 Cette étude met à jour et raffine l,enquête qu'avait faite Hallin sur les clips sonores d,actualités en documentant la prévalence des clips visuels des candidats, dans lesquels ceux-ci sont montrés mais non entendus (par opposition àêtre montrés et entendus), dans les bulletins d'information sur les élections générales au travers de quatre cycles électoraux. Une analyse visuelle de la couverture par les bulletins d,information des réseaux de télédiffusion (ABC, CBS et NBC) des élections présidentielles américaines de 1992, 1996, 2000 et 2004 démontre que les clips visuels ont constitué un plus grand pourcentage de la couverture électorale totale que les clips sonores, les candidats apparaissant plus fréquemment (de façon significative) dans les clips visuels que dans les clips sonores. Alors que les clips sonores des candidats ne cessent de raccourcir au fil du temps, la durée des clips visuels augmente , et les candidats sont présentés dans des clips visuels dans une proportion presque deux fois plus grande que les journalistes. Resumen Tomando a la Televisión Seriamente: Un Análisis de los fragmentos de Sonido e Imagen de la Cobertura de Campañas Presidenciales, 1992-2004 Este estudio actualiza y extiende la investigación pionera de Hallin sobre los fragmentos de sonidos de noticias a través de la documentación de la prevalencia de las imágenes fragmentadas de los candidatos, en las cuales los candidatos fueron mostrados pero no escuchados (en vez de ser mostrados y escuchados), en las noticias de las elecciones generales durante 4 ciclos electivos. Un análisis visual de la cobertura de noticias de las redes de televisión (ABC, CBS, y NBC) y de las elecciones presidenciales de los Estados Unidos de 1992, 1996, 2000, y 2004 encontró que los fragmentos de imágenes, más que los de los sonidos, constituían un gran porcentaje de la cobertura total de la campaña, con los candidatos apareciendo más significativamente en los fragmentos de imágenes que en los fragmentos de sonido. EFFECT OF FROZEN TEMPERATURE AND STORAGE TIME ON CALPAINS, CATHEPSINS (B, B + L, H AND D) AND THEIR ENDOGENOUS INHIBITORS IN GOAT MUSCLES

ABSTRACT The effects of frozen storage on the biochemical properties of myofibrils, muscle proteinases (cathepsins and calpains) and their endogenous inhibitors were investigated. Longissimus dorsi, biceps femoris, semimembranosus and semitendinosus muscles from goat were frozen (,15C) and studied up to 120 days. The results showed that the percentage change in sarcomere length was 8.4,13.1. The calpain activity was determined after separation on a diethylaminoethyl,Sephacel column (Sigma, St. Louis, MO). Significantly greater percentage of calpain II activity was recovered when compared to calpain I. There was a 15,25% loss in calpastatin inhibitory activity, and the cystatin level fell by 11,16% after 80 days. Cathepsin B, B + L, H and D were very stable when compared to calpains. The calcium concentration may also be the factor for calpain activation. The sodium dodecyl sulfate,polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis result showed the appearance of 55 kDa components. It was concluded that calpains, not cathepsins, play an important role in the proteolysis of myofibrillar proteins at the freezing temperature. [source]


The impact of relative tenure on newcomer socialization dynamics

Although many researchers have examined the impact of organizational tenure on newcomer socialization dynamics, few have explored whether relative tenure influences perceptions and behaviors inside organizations. This study introduces the concept of relative tenure and shows through a sociometric survey of 200 employees across four organizations that an individual's relative position in his or her firm's tenure distribution explains a significantly greater percentage of variance in newcomer status, social network position, and information-providing behavior than does absolute measures of tenure. The results suggest that organizational growth and turnover may have a bigger impact on newcomer socialization dynamics than has been discussed in the literature. Effect of Casting Procedures on Screw Loosening in UCLA-Type Abutments

Background: Screw loosening of implant restorations continues to be a complication in implant prosthodontics. Screw joints are subjected to a loss of initially applied torque because of friction and component misfit. It has been suggested that the loss of applied torque is less in machined metal abutments than in cast plastic abutments. Purpose: This study compared the loss of applied torque (detorque) values in machined titanium and in cast UCLA-type abutments for external hex abutment/implant interface. Materials and Methods: Four groups of 12 samples each were evaluated: (1) machined titanium abutments, (2) premachined palladium abutments cast with palladium, (3) plastic abutments cast with nickel-chromium, and (4) plastic abutments cast with cobalt-chromium. Each abutment was torqued to 30 Ncm according to the manufacturer's instructions and detorqued three times. The mean loss of applied torque (detorque) was recorded as a percentage of the torque applied. Group means were calculated and compared using ANOVA and Tukey's LSD test. Results: Mean detorque values were (1) 92.3 ± 2.9%, (2) 81.6 ± 5.0%, (3) 86.4 ± 4.6%, and (4) 84.0 ± 7.0%. Machined abutments demonstrated significantly greater detorque values compared with all cast groups (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found among cast groups. Conclusion: Machined abutments retained a significantly greater percentage of torque compared with cast abutments. Casting procedures decrease the percentage of applied torque, which may influence final screw joint stability. [source]


Opposing Effects of Chronic Alcohol Consumption on Hepatic Gluconeogenesis for Female Versus Male Rats

Abstract: Background: The impact of chronic alcohol consumption on hepatic gluconeogenesis (HGN) between males and females is unknown. To determine the effects of chronic alcohol consumption (8 weeks) on HGN, the isolated liver perfusion technique was used on 24-hr-fasted male and female Wistar rats. Methods: After surgical isolation, livers were perfused (single pass) for 30 min with Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate buffer and fresh bovine erythrocytes with no added substrate (washout period). After the washout period, livers were perfused with lactate (10 mM) and [U- 14C]lactate (15,000 dpm/ml) using the recirculation method. Results: There was no significant difference in HGN between males and females fed the control diet. In contrast, the females chronically fed the ethanol diet (FE) had significantly lower HGN rates (2.73 ± 0.37 ,mol/min × g liver protein,1), whereas males fed the ethanol diet (ME) had significantly higher HGN rates (4.99 ± 0.45 ,mol/min × g liver protein,1) than controls (3.83 ± 0.34 ,mol/min × g liver protein,1). Concomitant decreases were also observed for both 14C-lactate incorporation into 14C-glucose and rates of lactate uptake for FE, while corresponding increases were observed for 14C-lactate incorporation into 14C-glucose for ME. The livers from ME were able to convert a greater percentage of the lactate into glucose, resulting in the elevation in gluconeogenic capacity. Conclusion: Chronic alcohol consumption lowers the hepatic gluconeogenic capacity from lactate in females and elevates HGN in males. [source]


The Relationship Between Vaccine Dose and Efficacy in Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus Vaccinated as Fry with a Live Attenuated Strain of Edwardsiella ictaluri (RE-33),

Channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus were vaccinated at 12 d of age (post-hatch) by a 2-min bath immersion with attenuated Edwardsiella ictaluri RE-33 at doses of 2.5 × 105, 2.5 × 106, and 2.4 × 107 colony-forming units CFU/mL of water. Following vaccination, RE-33 was recovered from a greater percentage of fry that were vaccinated at the high and intermediate doses compared to fry vaccinated at the lowest dose. Independent of dose, the greatest percentage of RE-33 positive fry occurred between 1 and 6 d post-vaccination with a significant decrease in positive fry observed on day 12. A significant increase in mortality occurred 6 to 12 d post-vaccination in fry vaccinated at the highest dose. No differences in post-vaccination mortalities occurred between the other treatments. Following virulent E. ictaluri challenge, mortalities of fish vaccinated at doses of 2.5 × 106 and 2.4 × 107 CFU/mL were significantly less than those of fish vaccinated at 2.5 × 105 CFU/mL and sham-vaccinated control fish. These data show that vaccination with RE-33 can offer protection against subsequent virulent E. ictaluri infection. [source]


Tattoos and antisocial personality disorder

Objective,The relationship of tattoos to the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) was explored in a forensic psychiatric inpatient hospital setting. It was hypothesized that a greater proportion of forensic inpatients that possessed tattoos had ASPD than patients who did not possess tattoos. Method,Forensic male psychiatric inpatients (N = 36) were administered a semi-structured interview to determine the presence of a tattoo. ASPD was determined by criteria on a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV ASPD checklist. Demographic and background characteristics of the patients were collected, and details about each tattoo were obtained including a calculation of the surface area of each tattoo. Results,Significantly more forensic psychiatric inpatients with tattoos had a diagnosis of ASPD compared to patients without tattoos. Patients with ASPD also had a significantly greater number of tattoos, a trend toward having a greater percentage of their total body surface area tattooed, and were more likely to have a history of substance abuse than patients without ASPD. Tattooed subjects, with or without ASPD, were significantly more likely to have histories of substance abuse, sexual abuse and suicide attempts than non-tattooed patients. Conclusions,Forensic psychiatric inpatients with tattoos should be assessed carefully for the presence of ASPD as well as for substance abuse, sexual abuse and suicide attempts, factors having potentially significant influence on the assessment and treatment of such patients. Nutritional, developmental, and genetic influences on relative sitting height at high altitude,

The study explores how nutritional status, developmental exposure to high-altitude hypoxia, and genetic ancestry influence relative sitting height in two groups of high-altitude Bolivian children aged 8 through 13 years of age: 253 rural Aymara children of very low socioeconomic status and 273 children of upper socioeconomic status from the capital city of La Paz. The rural Aymara children on average have longer trunks relative to stature, but there is also overlap in body proportions between the two groups of children. The 20% of each sample in the region of overlap was examined to investigate influences on relative sitting height. Nutritional effects on relative sitting height are suggested by the finding that Aymara children with relatively long legs are taller, heavier, and fatter than other Aymara children. Developmental and genetic influences on relative sitting height are suggested by the finding that high relative sitting heights in elite urban children are associated with a greater percentage of time lived at high altitude and with parents born in Bolivia. Separating developmental and ancestry effects is difficult because the two are closely interconnected in the urban children. The results of this study suggest that influences on growth in relative trunk and leg length are similar to those that affect other aspects of growth in Andean populations. They also highlight the fact that because relative sitting height gradually decreases prior to adolescence and then increases, the interpretation of variation in body proportions in children is not always straightforward. Tomato spotted wilt virus in peanut tissue types and physiological effects related to disease incidence and severity,

Three peanut cultivars, Georgia Green, NC-V11, and ANorden, were grown using production practices that encouraged the development of Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). The progression of TSWV infection was examined through the season using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests on different tissue types [roots, leaves, pegs (pod attachment stem structures) and pods] and the effect of TSWV infection on physiological functions was examined at three harvest dates. Plants were classed into three severity categories: (i) no TSWV symptoms or previous positive ELISA tests; (ii) less than 50% of leaf tissue exhibiting TSWV symptoms; and (iii) greater than 50% of leaf tissue affected. TSWV showed a slow rate of infection at the beginning of the season and a greater percentage of infection of the roots than in the leaves. Photosynthesis was reduced in virus-affected infected plants by an average of 30% at the mid-season harvest and 51% at the late season harvest compared with virus-free plants across all three cultivars. Leaf tissue with symptoms had lower photosynthetic rates than healthy leaves. There were small differences among cultivars, with cv. ANorden maintaining higher average photosynthetic levels than cv. Georgia Green and higher transpirational levels than cv. NC-V11. The ability to maintain high assimilation physiology in the presence of the virus may help cultivars withstand TSWV infection and maintain final yields. [source]


Differentials in Adult Mortality and Activity Limitation by Years of Education in the United States at the End of the 1990s

This study examines mortality differentials and health disparities between educational groups within the 1998 adult population (ages 25 and older) in the United States. Mortality differentials are measured using average life expectancy and health disparities by expected years without activity limitation. The results indicate that for both sexes, higher education is associated with higher life expectancy. Those with higher levels of education also have higher life expectancy without activity limitation. Adults with higher education can also expect to enjoy a greater percentage of their expected lives free of any form of activity limitation. At each level of education, adult females have a higher level of activity limitation compared to adult males. At the same level of education, adult females expect to enjoy smaller percentages of their remaining lives free of activity limitation compared to adult males of the same age. [source]


Gradients of occlusal wear in hunter-gatherers and agriculturalists

Abstract Occlusal wear was recorded in maxillary teeth from three North American late Archaic (3385 ± 365 cal BC) hunter-gatherer sites (n = 306) and late Anasazi-early Zuni agricultural sites (,1300 AD) (n = 87). Comparisons were undertaken using descriptive and inferential statistics to determine differences between these groups, and along the maxillary tooth row. The hunter-gatherers had a significantly greater percentage of occlusal wear than the agriculturalists. For both hunter-gatherers and agriculturalists, occlusal wear was greatest on the central incisors and first molars. The third molars had the least amount of wear. It was inferred from these results that the hunter-gatherers had a more abrasive diet, and different daily task activities compared to the agriculturalists. One further finding was that wear patterns on anterior and posterior teeth are influenced by the order that teeth erupt into the jaw, as well as diet and behavior. Selective lesion of retrotrapezoid Phox2b-expressing neurons raises the apnoeic threshold in rats

Injection of the neurotoxin saporin,substance P (SSP-SAP) into the retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) attenuates the central chemoreflex in rats. Here we ask whether these deficits are caused by the destruction of a specific type of interneuron that expresses the transcription factor Phox2b and is non-catecholaminergic (Phox2b+TH,). We show that RTN contains around 2100 Phox2b+TH, cells. Injections of SSP-SAP into RTN destroyed Phox2b+TH, neurons but spared facial motoneurons, catecholaminergic and serotonergic neurons and the ventral respiratory column caudal to the facial motor nucleus. Two weeks after SSP-SAP, the apnoeic threshold measured under anaesthesia was unchanged when fewer than 57% of the Phox2b+TH, neurons were destroyed. However, destruction of 70 ± 3.5% of these cells was associated with a dramatic rise of the apnoeic threshold (from 5.6 to 7.9% end-expiratory P). In anaesthetized rats with unilateral lesions of around 70% of the Phox2b+TH, neurons, acute inhibition of the contralateral intact RTN with muscimol instantly eliminated phrenic nerve discharge (PND) but normal PND could usually be elicited by strong peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation (8/12 rats). Muscimol had no effect in rats with an intact contralateral RTN. In conclusion, the destruction of the Phox2b+TH, neurons is a plausible cause of the respiratory deficits caused by injection of SSP-SAP into RTN. Two weeks after toxin injection, 70% of these cells must be killed to cause a severe attenuation of the central chemoreflex under anaesthesia. The loss of an even greater percentage of these cells would presumably be required to produce significant breathing deficits in the awake state. [source]


Comparative growth and yield of channel catfish and channel × blue hybrid catfish fed a full or restricted ration

Abstract Growth and yield (kg ha,1) of the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus, Rafinesque, 1818) and the channel × blue hybrid catfish [I. punctatus female ×I. furcatus (Lesueur, 1840) male], which shared the Jubilee strain of channel catfish as the maternal parent, were compared in sixteen 0.1 ha earthen ponds (14 852 fish ha,1) during the April to November growing season. Each fish genetic group was fed a commercially formulated 32% protein feed daily to apparent satiation or at 80% of the mean daily satiation ration. Net yield and individual weight were higher for channel × blue hybrid catfish compared with channel catfish and for fish fed a full ration compared with a restricted ration. When fed a full ration, the channel × blue hybrid catfish grew faster from May to September than did the purebred channel catfish because the hybrid catfish consumed a greater percentage of its body weight at each feeding. Net yield within each fish genetic group was lower when feed ration was restricted. The per cent reduction in net yield in response to feed restriction was similar for each fish genetic group. Survival and growth of hatchery-produced postlarvae and spat of the Caribbean scallops Argopecten nucleus and Nodipecten nodosus

Abstract A study was made of the growth and survival of postlarvae and spat of Argopecten nucleus and Nodipecten nodosus produced in the laboratory and exposed to different conditions of settlement and culture. An evaluation was made of the different types of collection substrates (onion-bags, artificial-grass, fibreglass-plates), two types of settlement inducers (epinephrine, low temperature), and two culture environments (sea, laboratory). The results showed that larger numbers of postlarvae were obtained in artificial-grass collectors than on fibreglass-plates or in the onion-bags. The growth of the A. nucleus postlarvae was not affected by the collector type, while that of N. nodosus was higher on fibreglass-plates, and lesser in the onion-bags. Both thermal and chemical stimulation of the competent larvae resulted in recovery of a greater percentage of postlarvae. The growth of postlarvae of A. nucleus was better in groups exposed to the two methods of settlement induction, while those of N. nodosus remained unaffected by this treatment. The survival of the postlarvae and spat was greater in the laboratory than at sea except in the case of A. nucleus postlarvae attached to collectors, whose survival was similar in both environments. The growth of postlarvae and spat was greater in the sea than in the laboratory. [source]


Comparison of treatment modalities in burning mouth syndrome

Abstract Background:, Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is characterized by a spontaneous burning pain in the oral mucosa without known organic cause or standardized treatment. The aims of this study were to assess and compare the efficacy of clonazepam and diazepam in relieving the symptoms associated with BMS and evaluate for which patients this treatment might be effective by correlating treatment efficacy with underlying psychological status. Methods:, The medical records of BMS patients attending an oral medicine private practice (1999,2004) were reviewed. The patients were then contacted and asked to complete a short questionnaire regarding their response to diazepam/clonazepam drug therapies. A second group of patients attending the above clinic (n = 30) were asked to fill out a hospital anxiety and depression assessment form in an attempt to correlate treatment success with underlying psychological status. Results: A total of 71.4 per cent of patients treated with clonazepam had partial or complete resolution of their oral symptoms, while 55.1 per cent of patients treated with diazepam had improvement of their oral symptoms. There was no correlation between underlying anxiety or depression and efficacy of benzodiazepine medication. Conclusions:, A greater percentage of patients taking clonazepam reported either partial or complete relief of symptoms compared to diazepam. However, the differences were not statistically significant. There was no correlation found between underlying psychopathology and treatment success with benzodiazepines. [source]
