Selected AbstractsTemperature and Thermal Balance Monitoring and Control in DialysisHEMODIALYSIS INTERNATIONAL, Issue 2 2003Franti, ek Lopot Temperature and thermal balance have been studied in an effort to explain better tolerance of ultrafiltration during isolated ultrafiltration and other convective techniques as compared to conventional hemodialysis. The large number of published studies has led to the conclusion that negative thermal balance of the extracorporeal circuit ameliorates hemodynamic stability by increased vasoreactivity and increased peripheral resistance. On the other hand, measurement of dialysis efficiency (urea removal) did not unequivocally confirm the theoretically predicted decrease in efficiency of "cool" dialysis. Another suggested application of temperature and thermal balance for assessing bioincompatibility is currently hampered by the ability of existing technology to evaluate thermal parameters of the extracorporeal circuit only. Publications on impact of negative thermal balance of the extracorporeal circuit on ultrafiltration-induced changes in blood volume give contradictory results. Further studies are needed for elucidation of the impact of thermal balance on overall biological response to dialysis. [source] Sequencing over 13 000 expressed sequence tags from six subtractive cDNA libraries of wild and modern wheats following slow drought stressPLANT CELL & ENVIRONMENT, Issue 3 2009NESLIHAN Z. ERGEN ABSTRACT A deeper understanding of the drought response and genetic improvement of the cultivated crops for better tolerance requires attention because of the complexity of the drought response syndrome and the loss of genetic diversity during domestication. We initially screened about 200 wild emmer wheat genotypes and then focused on 26 of these lines, which led to the selection of two genotypes with contrasting responses to water deficiency. Six subtractive cDNA libraries were constructed, and over 13 000 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were sequenced using leaf and root tissues of wild emmer wheat genotypes TR39477 (tolerant) and TTD-22 (sensitive), and modern wheat variety Kiziltan drought stressed for 7 d. Clustering and assembly of ESTs resulted in 2376 unique sequences (1159 without hypothetical proteins and no hits), 75% of which were represented only once. At this level of EST sampling, each tissue shared a very low percentage of transcripts (13,26%). The data obtained indicated that the genotypes shared common elements of drought stress as well as distinctly differential expression patterns that might be illustrative of their contrasting ability to tolerate water deficiencies. The new EST data generated here provide a highly diverse and rich source for gene discovery in wheat and other grasses. [source] A comparison of the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine versus propofol target-controlled infusion for sedation during fibreoptic nasotracheal intubationANAESTHESIA, Issue 3 2010C.-J. Tsai Summary Fibreoptic intubation is a valuable modality for airway management. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine vs target controlled propofol infusion in providing sedation during fibreoptic intubation. Forty patients with anticipated difficult airways and due to undergo tracheal intubation for elective surgery were enrolled and randomly allocated into the dexmedetomidine group (1.0 ,g.kg,1 over 10 min) (n = 20) or the propofol target controlled infusion group (n = 20). Intubating conditions and patient tolerance as graded by a scoring system were evaluated as primary outcomes. Intubation was successful in all patients. Satisfactory intubating conditions were found in both groups (19/20 in each group). The median (IOR [range]) comfort score was 2 (1,2 [1,4]) in the dexmedetomidine group and 3 (2,4 [2,5]) in the propofol group (p = 0.027), favouring the former. The dexmedetomidine group experienced fewer airway events and less heart rate response to intubation than the propofol group (p < 0.003 and p = 0.007, respectively). Both dexmedetomidine and propofol target-controlled infusion are effective for fibreoptic intubation. Dexmedetomidine allows better tolerance, more stable haemodynamic status and preserves a patent airway. [source] Construction and Evaluation of a Gold Tubular Electrode for Flow Analysis: Application to Speciation of Antimony in Water SamplesELECTROANALYSIS, Issue 6 2007Rodrigo Santos Abstract A tubular gold electrode (TGE) is described for the first time by summarizing the important aspects of its construction and evaluation. Applicability of the TGE is evaluated in the speciation of Sb(III) and Sb(V) using anodic stripping voltammetry in a single flow manifold. Studies with surface active interferences and metallic cations were performed. The proposed conditions for antimony determination showed good tolerance towards cationic, anionic and nonionic surface active substances. A linear response for antimony was obtained for solutions containing significant amounts of several metallic cations. Linear calibration curves for Sb(III) were obtained in the range 1,10,ppb with a detection limit of 0.19,ppb (CV=2.91%, n=5, [Sb(III)]=5,ppb). For Sb(V), linear calibration curves were in the range 1,15,ppb with a detection limit of 0.32,ppb (CV=1.41%, n=5, [Sb(V)]=5,ppb). The figures of merit achieved sustain for the good applicability of the proposed method as it allows the determination of antimony at levels below maximum values permitted in consuming waters. Results of antimony concentration determined in water samples were validated against the ICP-MS reference procedure or compared with reference water samples. These types of ruthenium complexes, conveniently prepared from commonly available ruthenium sources, are rather stable, display good tolerance towards diverse organic functionalities and also to air and moisture. Remarkably, they exhibit a high activity and chemoselectivity in a variety of catalytic processes such as ring-closing metathesis (RCM), Kharasch addition, alkyne dimerization, enol ester synthesis, ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). [source] EFFECT OF ERYTHRITOL ON QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS OF REDUCED-CALORIE DANISH COOKIESJOURNAL OF FOOD QUALITY, Issue 2010SHENG-DUN LIN ABSTRACT The effects of erythritol on the quality characteristics of Danish cookies were studied. Danish cookies were formulated using erythritol as a sweetener to replace 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% sucrose. The results showed that Hunter L -values and erythritol contents of cookies increased with increasing erythritol level whereas there was no difference in the moisture, protein, fat, ash and hardness of cookies prepared with sucrose or erythritol. The erythritol was stable during baking. In descriptive analysis, the surface color of cookies became lighter, and the sweetness of cookies became less sweet as erythritol level increased and sucrose decreased. The 50, 75 and 100% erythritol cookies had a cooling sensation. The moistness and hardness of cookies showed no difference among all samples. In hedonic test, the degree of surface color, sweetness, hardness, flavor and overall liking of cookies prepared with 0, 25 and 50% replacement of sucrose with erythritol revealed no difference. However, lower degree of sensory qualities (except hardness) liking of 75 and 100% erythritol cookies was observed. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Sucrose is one of the principal ingredients of cookies. But a sucrose-rich diet had been proven to be associated with lipogenesis and obesity. Erythritol is a sugar alcohol and has a good tolerance by humans. It is a noncariogenic, nonglycemic and low-calorie sweetener that is safe for diabetics. In addition, it possesses antioxidant properties. The study explores the possibility of utilizing erythritol to produce acceptable cookies. [source] Randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of sublingual immunotherapy with a Pru p 3 quantified peach extractALLERGY, Issue 6 2009M. Fernández-Rivas Background:, Peach allergy is highly prevalent in the Mediterranean area; it is persistent and potentially severe, and therefore a prime target for immunotherapy. We aimed to study the efficacy and safety of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) with a peach extract quantified in mass units for Pru p 3, the peach lipid transfer protein. Methods:, Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled (DBPC) clinical trial. The main efficacy outcome was the change in the response to a DBPC food challenge (DBPCFC) with peach. Secondary efficacy outcomes were the changes in skin prick test (SPT), and in specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) and IgG4 to Pru p 3. Tolerance was assessed with a careful recording of adverse events. Results:, After 6 months of SLIT, the active group tolerated a significantly higher amount of peach (three- to ninefold), presented a significant decrease (5.3 times) in SPT, and a significant increase in IgE and IgG4 to Pru p 3. No significant changes were observed within the placebo group. Statistically significant inter-group differences were only observed in the SPT and IgG4 responses. No serious adverse events were reported. Systemic reactions were mild, and observed with a similar frequency in both groups. Local reactions were significantly more frequent in the active group (three times) and 95% of them restricted to the oral cavity. Conclusion:, In this first exploratory clinical trial, SLIT for peach allergy seems to be a promising therapeutic option that could modify the clinical reactivity of the patients to peach intake and the underlying immunological response with a good tolerance. [source] Aripiprazole: A treatment for severe coprolalia in "refractory" Gilles de la Tourette syndromeMOVEMENT DISORDERS, Issue 3 2008Mouna Ben Djebara MD Abstract Coprolalia is one of the most distressing symptoms in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. We report on a 28-year-old man with severe coprolalia at the forefront of symptoms, which had a dramatic impact on his social and professional life and that did not fluctuate for years. Moreover, he presented hypersensitivity to neuroleptics. The use of aripiprazole, as a last resort, induced a 75% of improvement of his symptoms with good tolerance. This suggests that aripiprazole constitutes a valuable therapeutic in coprolalia. Moreover, its biochemical class specificity makes it an alternative for patients hypersensitive to other classes of neuroleptics. © 2007 Movement Disorder Society [source] Synthetic Tannins in Dermatology,A Therapeutic Option in a Variety of Pediatric DermatosesPEDIATRIC DERMATOLOGY, Issue 3 2007Regina Fölster-Holst M.D. The therapeutic effects of synthetic tannins are based on their tanning action as well as on their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antipruritic effects. In terms of pharmacology and clinical applicability, synthetic tannins are particularly versatile substances. They have also been used as steroid-free, anti-inflammatory treatment alternatives, especially in pediatric dermatoses. Systemic absorption is not to be expected. Because of their high safety profile and good tolerance, they are appropriate for the treatment of all age groups.
