Paste Electrode Based on Short Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes and Room Temperature Ionic Liquid: Preparation, Characterization and Application in DNA Detection

ELECTROANALYSIS, Issue 12 2008
Xuzhi Zhang
Abstract A paste electrode (SWNT&RTIL PE) has been prepared using carboxylic group-functionalized short single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) mixed with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6, one kind of room temperature ionic liquid, RTIL). Its electrochemical behavior was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in comparison with the paste electrode using mineral oil as a binder. Results highlighted the advantages of the paste electrode: not only higher conductivity, but also lower potential separation (,Ep), higher peak current (ip) and better reversibility towards dopamine (DA), methylene blue (MB) and K3[Fe(CN)6]. The SWNT&RTIL PE could be used to detect the number of guanine bases and adenine bases contents in per mol oligonucleotides according to the current response in the range of 0.05,2.0,nM. Based on the current response of guanine bases, oligonucleotides could be detected sensitively in the B,R buffer solution with a detection limit of 9.9,pM. The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (ks) of guanine bases contents in the oligonucleotides was investigated and its value was 0.90,s,1. In essence the SWNT&RTIL PE showed high sensitivity, reliability, stability and reproducibility for the detection of DNA. [source]

Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers Based on Functionalized Bis-terpyridines as Novel Electrochromic Materials,

ADVANCED MATERIALS, Issue 22 2007
S. Han
Self-assembly of various metallo-supramolecular coordination polyelectrolytes (MEPEs) based on pyridine ring functionalized ditopic bis-terpyridines, as well as the electrochromic property is presented. MEPEs derived from electron-donating OMe functionalized ligands exhibit rapid switching rates, good reversibility, high stability, and an optical memory. The first structure-property relationships are proposed, which are needed for the de novo design and fabrication of new materials. [source]

Discover dependency pattern among attributes by using a new type of nonlinear multiregression

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, Issue 8 2001
Kebin Xu
Multiregression is one of the most common approaches used to discover dependency pattern among attributes in a database. Nonadditive set functions have been applied to deal with the interactive predictive attributes involved, and some nonlinear integrals with respect to nonadditive set functions are employed to establish a nonlinear multiregression model describing the relation between the objective attribute and predictive attributes. The values of the nonadditive set function play a role of unknown regression coefficients in the model and are determined by an adaptive genetic algorithm from the data of predictive and objective attributes. Furthermore, such a model is now improved by a new numericalization technique such that the model can accommodate both categorical and continuous numerical attributes. The traditional dummy binary method dealing with the mixed type data can be regarded as a very special case of our model when there is no interaction among the predictive attributes and the Choquet integral is used. When running the algorithm, to avoid a premature during the evolutionary procedure, a technique of maintaining diversity in the population is adopted. A test example shows that the algorithm and the relevant program have a good reversibility for the data. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.16: 949,962 (2001) [source]

Preparation and characteristic of electric stimuli responsive hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol/poly (sodium maleate- co -sodium acrylate)

JOURNAL OF APPLIED POLYMER SCIENCE, Issue 1 2008
Yi Gao
Abstract Maleic anhydride was used to preparare polyvinyl alcohol/poly (sodium maleate- co -sodium acrylate) hydrogels (PVA/poly(SMA-SAA)) by a repeated frost-defrost process because of its higher charge density and potential electric stimuli sensitivity. The bending angle was measured in a noncontact electric field using carbon as plate electrodes. It was found that the bending angle was dependent on various factors, including composition of hydrogel, concentration of NaCl solution, types of electrolyte solution, and electric voltage. It exhibited that the bending angle increased when the concentration of NaCl solutions and the electric voltages increased. An abnormal bending direction was observed, and it was affected not only by the kinds of hydrogels, but also by the exterior variations. The hydrogel showed good reversibility in on-off electric field and could be a candidate for practical application. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008 [source]
