Selected AbstractsBlending of low-density polyethylene with vanillin for improved barrier and aroma-releasing properties in food packagingJOURNAL OF APPLIED POLYMER SCIENCE, Issue 6 2009R. S. Jagadish Abstract Modification of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) with vanillin to obtain flavored packaging film with improved gas barrier and flavor-releasing properties has been studied. The modification of LDPE with vanillin was monitored by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, wherein the appearance of new peaks at 1704.7, 1673.6, and 1597.2 cm,1 indicates the incorporation of vanillin into LDPE matrix. Films of uniform thickness were obtained by the extrusion of modified LDPE. Modified LDPE was found to have significantly higher gas barrier properties and grease resistance. Sensory quality of food products viz, doodhpeda (milk-based solid soft sweet), biscuit, and skimmed milk powder packed in LDPE-vanillin film showed that the doodhpeda sample had clearly perceptible vanilla aroma, whereas biscuit had marginal aroma and skimmed milk powder did not have noticeable aroma. When viewed in the light of imparting desirable vanilla aroma, results of the study indicated that LDPE-vanillin film has better prospects as a packaging material for solid sweets with considerable fat content when stored under ambient conditions. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009 [source] KINETICS OF HYDROCARBON GAS GENERATION FROM MARINE KEROGEN AND OIL: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE ORIGIN OF NATURAL GASES IN THE HETIANHE GASFIELD, TARIM BASIN, NW CHINAJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 4 2007Yunpeng Wang In this paper we derive kinetic parameters for the generation of gaseous hydrocarbons (C1-5) and methane (C1) from closed-system laboratory pyrolysis of selected samples of marine kerogen and oil from the SW Tarim Basin. The activation energy distributions for the generation of both C1-5 (Ea = 59-72kcal, A = 1.0×1014 s,1) and C1 (Ea = 61-78kcal, A = 6.06×1014 s,1) hydrocarbons from the marine oil are narrower than those for the generation of these hydrocarbons from marine kerogen (Ea = 50-74kcal, A = 1.0×1014 s,1 for C1-5; and Ea = 48-72kcal, A=3.9×1013 s,1 for C1, respectively). Using these kinetic parameters, both the yields and timings of C1-5 and C1 hydrocarbons generated from Cambrian source rocks and from in-reservoir cracking of oil in Ordovician strata were predicted for selected wells along a north-south profile in the SW of the basin. Thermodynamic conditions for the cracking of oil and kerogen were modelled within the context of the geological framework. It is suggested that marine kerogen began to crack at temperatures of around 120°C (or 0.8 %Ro) and entered the gas window at 138°C (or 1.05 %Ro); whereas the marine oil began to crack at about 140 °C (or 1.1 %Ro) and entered the gas window at 158 °C (or 1.6%Ro). The main geological controls identified for gas accumulations in the Bachu Arch (Southwest Depression, SW Tarim Basin) include the remaining gas potential following Caledonian uplift; oil trapping and preservation in basal Ordovician strata; the extent of breaching of Ordovician reservoirs; and whether reservoir burial depths are sufficiently deep for oil cracking to have occurred. In the Maigaiti Slope and Southwest Depression, the timing of gas generation was later than that in the Bachu Arch, with much higher yields and generation rates, and hence better prospects for gas exploration. It appears from the gas generation kinetics that the primary source for the gases in the Hetianhe gasfield was the Southwest Depression. [source] Land under pressure: soil conservation concerns and opportunities for EthiopiaLAND DEGRADATION AND DEVELOPMENT, Issue 1 2003B. G. J. S. Sonneveld Abstract This paper evaluates the future impact of soil degradation on national food security and land occupation in Ethiopia. It applies a spatial optimization model that maximizes national agricultural revenues under alternative scenarios of soil conservation, land accessibility and technology. The constraints in the model determine whether people remain on their original site, migrate within their ethnically defined areas or are allowed a transregional migration. Key to this model is the combination of a water erosion model with a spatial yield function that gives an estimate of the agricultural yield in its geographical dependence of natural resources and population distribution. A comparison of simulated land productivity values with historical patterns shows that results are interpretable and yield more accurate outcomes than postulating straightforward reductions in yield or land area for each geographic entity. The results of the optimization model show that in absence of soil erosion control, the future agricultural production stagnates and results in distressing food shortages, while rural incomes drop dramatically below the poverty line. Soil conservation and migration support a slow growth, but do not suffice to meet the expected food demand. In a transregional migration scenario, the highly degraded areas are exchanged for less affected sites, whereas cultivation on already substantially degraded soils largely continues when resettlement is confined to the original ethnic,administrative entity. A shift to modern technology offers better prospects and moderates the migration, but soil conservation remains indispensable, especially in the long term. Finally, an accelerated growth of non-agricultural sectors further alleviates poverty in the countryside, contributing to higher income levels of the total population and, simultaneously, relieving the pressure on the land through rural,urban migration. [source] Direct electrochemical detection of glucose in human plasma on capillary electrophoresis microchipsELECTROPHORESIS, Issue 21-22 2004Yan Du Abstract We developed an electrochemical detector on a hybrid chip for the determination of glucose in human plasma. The microchip system described in this paper consists of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) layer containing separation and injection channels and an electrode plate. The copper microelectrode is fabricated by selective electroless deposition. The fabrication of the decoupler is performed by platinum electrochemical deposition on the metal film formed by electroless deposition. Factors influencing the performance, including detection potential, separation field strength, and buffer concentration, were studied. The electrodes exhibited good stability and durability in the analytical procedures. Under optimized detection conditions, glucose responded linearly from 10 ,M to 1 mM. Finally, glucose in human plasma from three healthy individuals and two diabetics was successfully determined, giving a good prospect for a new clinical diagnostic instrument. [source] The first Raman spectroscopic study of San rock art in the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, South AfricaJOURNAL OF RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY, Issue 5 2008Linda C. Prinsloo Abstract San rock art sites are found throughout southern Africa; unfortunately this unique heritage is rapidly being lost through natural weathering processes, which have been the focus of various studies conducted in the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park since 1992. It has recently been shown that the ability of Raman spectroscopy to identify salts on rock faces on a micro, as well as nano scale, can make a contribution to these projects. In order to test the feasibility of undertaking on-site analyses, a small rock fragment with red and white pigments still attached, which had weathered off the rock face, was analysed with Raman spectroscopy under laboratory conditions, using a Dilor XY Raman instrument and a DeltaNu Inspector Raman portable instrument. A small sample of black pigment (<1 mm2), collected from a badly deteriorated painting and a few relevant samples collected on site, were analysed as well. It was possible to identify most of the inorganic pigments and minerals detected with previous XRD and EDX measurements including whewellite and weddellite coatings, which could be a tool for carbon dating purposes. Two carotenoid pigments were detected for the first time in San rock art pigments. Animal fat was also observed for the first time on both red and white pigments, on the rock face adjacent to the paintings and in highest concentrations on the back of the rock fragment. By applying SDM and WDM techniques, the interrogation system based on the InGaAs linear image sensor is designed and the system performance is analyzed. Experimental results show that the interrogation system can be used to interrogate the FBG sensors with wavelength bandwidth of 42 nm, SNR of 43 dB, wavelength accuracy of ±10 pm, and wavelength stability of ±15 pm. Flanagan Chronic transfusion therapy is used clinically to supply healthy erythrocytes for patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA) or beta-thalassemia major (TM). Despite the benefits of red blood cell transfusions, chronic transfusions lead to iron accumulation in key tissues such as the heart, liver, and endocrine glands. Transfusion-acquired iron overload is recognized as a cause of morbidity and mortality among patients receiving chronic transfusions. At present, there is little understanding of molecular events that occur during transfusional iron loading and the reasons for the large inter-individual variation observed clinically in transfusion-acquired iron accumulation. To address these issues, we examined whether any liver-expressed genes in SCA or TM patients with transfusional iron overload were associated with the degree of iron accumulation. Specifically, we performed microarray analysis on liver biopsy specimens comparing SCA patients with mild or severe iron overload and also compared SCA with TM patients. Fifteen candidate genes were identified with significantly differential expression between the high and low liver iron concentrations. SCA patients and 20 candidate genes were detected between the SCA and TM patient comparison. Subsequent quantitative PCR experiments validated 12 candidate genes; with GSTM1, eIF5a, SULF2, NTS, and HO-1 being particularly good prospects as genes that might affect the degree of iron accumulation. Future work will determine the baseline expression of these genes prior to transfusional iron overload and elucidate the full impact of these genes on the inter-individual variation observed clinically in transfusion-acquired iron accumulation. [source] Replacing methyl bromide in annual strawberry production with glucosinolate-containing green manure crops,PEST MANAGEMENT SCIENCE (FORMERLY: PESTICIDE SCIENCE), Issue 9 2003Luca Lazzeri Abstract The use of biocidal green manure crops is an agronomic technique for amending soil with fresh organic matter containing volatile compounds active in controlling some soil-borne pests and diseases. Two new selections of the Brassicaceae family were cultivated, incorporated before planting strawberries and tested as an alternative to fumigation with methyl bromide. Two biocidal green manure crops (Brassica juncea L sel ISCI20, Eruca sativa Mill cv Nemat) containing glucosinolate,myrosinase systems, a conventional green manure (barley), untreated soil and a fumigated control were evaluated during two seasons. The effect of these soil management systems on subsequent strawberry performance was evaluated by monitoring yield and plant growth parameters. In both years, biocidal plant green manure treatments led to a fruit yield lower than with methyl bromide, but higher than with conventional green manure or untreated soil. These results confirm the good prospects for biocidal green manures, not only as an environmentally friendly alternative to methyl bromide in conventional agriculture, but also in organic agriculture as an alternative to conventional green manure crops. Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Ultrasound-guided, high-energy extracorporeal shock-wave treatment of symptomatic calcareous tendinopathy of the shoulderANZ JOURNAL OF SURGERY, Issue 7 2002Christian Jakobeit Background:, The objective of the present study was to test the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided high-energy extracorporeal shock-wave treatment in symptomatic chronic calcareous tendinopathy of the shoulder rotator cuff, and to assess the morphology of the hydroxyapatite deposits before and after this treatment. Methods:, The study involved 80 patients who suffered from calcification of the rotator cuff. These patients were treated with an instrument with electromagnetic induction of shock-waves (Doli-Lithotripter, Dornier, Munich, Germany) under continuous ultrasound location of the treatment focus. The treatments were carried out in one to five sessions at an interval of 4,6 weeks. Each patient received a total of 1800 shock waves in each therapy. The flow density of the energy in the therapy focus was 0.08,0.42 mJ/mm2. Results:, Sixty-eight patients (85%) attained complete freedom from symptoms or only had minimal residual symptoms when stressing their shoulder joint. The calcification suffered by 57 (71.2%) patients was completely resorbed after treatment and partially resorbed in 16 patients (20%). Complete resorption of the calcareous deposits led to freedom from symptoms. In all patients with amorphous calcareous deposits, there was complete resorption of the calcification. Mixed calcareous foci were eliminated in 64.7,77% of the cases, depending on the extent of amorphous structures. Complete resorption was achieved in 44.4% of patients where homogeneous calcareous deposits were >1 cm in size. Conclusion:, Shock-wave treatment in periarthritis of the shoulder is a new and very effective method for symptomatic calcareous tendinopathy. Extracorporeal shock-wave treatment has good prospects of success in any type of calcification. As a non-invasive technique with a high success rate, shock-wave treatment is an alternative to surgical operations in patients who remain symptomatic after exhaustive conservative treatment. [source] Re-refinement from deposited X-ray data can deliver improved models for most PDB entriesACTA CRYSTALLOGRAPHICA SECTION D, Issue 2 2009Robbie P. Joosten The deposition of X-ray data along with the customary structural models defining PDB entries makes it possible to apply large-scale re-refinement protocols to these entries, thus giving users the benefit of improvements in X-ray methods that have occurred since the structure was deposited. Automated gradient refinement is an effective method to achieve this goal, but real-space intervention is most often required in order to adequately address problems detected by structure-validation software. In order to improve the existing protocol, automated re-refinement was combined with structure validation and difference-density peak analysis to produce a catalogue of problems in PDB entries that are amenable to automatic correction. It is shown that re-refinement can be effective in producing improvements, which are often associated with the systematic use of the TLS parameterization of B factors, even for relatively new and high-resolution PDB entries, while the accompanying manual or semi-manual map analysis and fitting steps show good prospects for eventual automation. It is proposed that the potential for simultaneous improvements in methods and in re-refinement results be further encouraged by broadening the scope of depositions to include refinement metadata and ultimately primary rather than reduced X-ray data. [source] Cobalt Hydroxide Nanosheets and Their Thermal Decomposition to Cobalt Oxide NanoringsCHEMISTRY - AN ASIAN JOURNAL, Issue 4 2008Xiaohe Liu Dr. Abstract We demonstrate herein that single-crystalline ,-cobalt hydroxide (,-Co(OH)2) nanosheets can be successfully synthesized in large quantities by a facile hydrothermal synthetic method with aqueous cobalt nitrate as the cobalt source and triethylamine as both an alkaline and a complexing reagent. This synthetic method has good prospects for the future large-scale production of single-crystalline ,-Co(OH)2 nanosheets owing to its high yield, low cost, and simple reaction apparatus. Single-crystalline porous nanosheets and nanorings of cobalt oxide (Co3O4) were obtained by a thermal-decomposition method with single-crystalline ,-Co(OH)2 nanosheets as the precursor. A probable mechanism of formation of ,-Co(OH)2 nanosheets, porous Co3O4 nanosheets, and Co3O4 nanorings was proposed on the basis of the experimental results. [source] |
