Kinds of General Terms modified by General Selected AbstractsOn the Improvement of Efficiency and Storage Requirements of the Discontinuous Galerkin Method for AeroacousticsPROCEEDINGS IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS & MECHANICS, Issue 1 2003M. Dumbser For Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA), good wave propagation properties are a crucial point for numerical schemes which solve the linearized Euler equations (LEE) in the time domain. A recently developed high order scheme with excellent wave propagation properties is the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. The DG schemes are based on the Finite Element Method (FEM), using discontinuous piecewise polynomial basis functions to represent the solution. The efficiency can be highly improved for CAA applications if a quadrature-free formulation of the DG method is used, but nevertheless the DG schemes consume much computer storage due to the Runge-Kutta time integration procedure and the high number of degrees of freedom to be stored for each element. We managed to develop a high order single-step quadrature-free DG method which does not use a Runge-Kutta time integration procedure but which applies the ADER approach of Toro, Schwartzkopff et al. and where the accuracy of the scheme can further be improved using additionally a reconstruction technique working on the degrees of freedom of the element and its neighbors. Hao I.3.3 [Computer Graphics]: Picture/Image Generation,Display Algorithms; H.5.0 [Information Systems]: Information Interfaces and Presentation,General Abstract Today's large data centres are the computational hubs of the next generation of IT services. With the advent of dynamic smart cooling and rack level sensing, the need for visual data exploration is growing. If administrators know the rack level thermal state changes and catch problems in real time, energy consumption can be greatly reduced. In this paper, we apply a cell-based spatio-temporal overall view with high-resolution time series to simultaneously analyze complex thermal state changes over time across hundreds of racks. We employ cell-based visualization techniques for trouble shooting and abnormal state detection. These techniques are based on the detection of sensor temperature relations and events to help identify the root causes of problems. In order to optimize the data centre cooling system performance, we derive new non-overlapped scatter plots to visualize the correlations between the temperatures and chiller utilization. All these techniques have been used successfully to monitor various time-critical thermal states in real-world large-scale production data centres and to derive cooling policies. We are starting to embed these visualization techniques into a handheld device to add mobile monitoring capability. Cline I.3.0 [Computer Graphics]: General Abstract The most common form of tabular inversion used in computer graphics is to compute the cumulative distribution table of a probability distribution (PDF) and then search within it to transform points, using an,O(log n),binary search. Besides the standard inversion method, however, several other discrete inversion algorithms exist that can perform the same transformation inO(1) time per point. In this paper, we examine the performance of three of these alternate methods, two of which are new. [source] The Economics of HIV/AIDS: A SurveyDEVELOPMENT POLICY REVIEW, Issue 1 2003Edoardo Gaffeo This article surveys the main economic issues associated with the HIV/AIDS epidemic, paying special attention to sub,Saharan Africa. It explores the economic and behavioural determinants of HIV transmission, the microeconomics of market failures associated with high HIV prevalence, the prospects for regional development from a macroeconomic perspective and the efficient design of policies for coping with the epidemic. In line with the recent appeal by the UN Secretary General, the article argues that, without a decisive effort to halt HIV/AIDS, people living in the region are bound to experience a further fall in their standard of living in both relative and absolute terms. However, to be effective, anti,AIDS programmes must be rooted in sound economic principles.
