Self, other awareness and peer relationships in toddlers: gender comparisons

INFANT AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT, Issue 5 2010
Laura E. Levine
Abstract Toddlers' growing self, other awareness has been linked with their ability to interact with peers, but there is reason to think that self, other awareness may relate to different aspects of peer relationships for boys and girls. We hypothesized that boys would express self, other awareness by separating self from other through claiming toys, while girls would express self, other awareness by creating similarities between self and other through use of the duplicate of a partner's toy. For 52 22,26,month olds, self, other awareness was assessed through four tasks: mirror self recognition, perceptual role taking, pronoun recognition and pronoun use. Each child subsequently interacted with a same-sex peer for 30,min. Girls high in self, other awareness, and their partners were more likely to engage in duplicate toy use than girls low in self, other awareness. No differences in toy claiming were found. Future longitudinal research would clarify how the onset of self, other awareness relates to developments in peer interaction for girls and boys. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]

Association of salivary lysozyme and C-reactive protein with metabolic syndrome

Qvarnstrom M, Janket S-J, Jones JA, Jethwani K, Nuutinen P, Garcia RI, Baird AE, Van Dyke TE and Meurman JH. Association of salivary lysozyme and C-reactive protein with metabolic syndrome. J Clin Periodontol 2010; 37: 805,811. doi: 10.1111/j.1600-051X.2010.01605.x. Abstract Introduction: Salivary lysozyme (SLZ) is a proteolytic enzyme secreted by oral leucocytes and contains a domain that has an affinity to advanced glycation end products (AGE). Thus, we hypothesized that SLZ would be associated with metabolic syndrome (metS), a pro-inflammatory state. Methods: Utilizing cross-sectional data from 250 coronary artery disease (CAD) and 250 non-CAD patients, the association of SLZ with metS was tested by logistic regression analyses controlling for age, sex, smoking, total cholesterol and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. The analyses were stratified by CAD status to control for the possible effects of CAD. Results: MetS was found in 122 persons. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for metS associated with the highest quartile of SLZ was 1.95 with 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.20,3.12, p -value=0.007, compared with the lower three quartiles combined. Among the 40 subjects with metS but without CAD, the OR was 1.63 (CI: 0.64,4.15, p=0.31), whereas in the CAD group, SLZ was significantly associated with metS [OR=1.96 (1.09,3.52), p=0.02]. In both subgroups, CRP was not significantly associated with metS. Conclusion: SLZ was significantly associated with metS (OR=1.95) independent of CRP level. Future longitudinal research is warranted. [source]

Accountability Disclosures by Queensland Local Government Councils: 1997,1999

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY & MANAGEMENT, Issue 3 2002
Christine Ryan
The annual report is promoted and regarded as the primary medium of accountability for government agencies. In Australia, anecdotal evidence suggests the quality of annual reports is variable. However, there is scant empirical evidence on the quality of reports. The aim of this research is to gauge the quality of annual reporting by local governments in Queensland, and to investigate the factors that may contribute to that level of quality. The results of the study indicate that although the quality of reporting by local governments has improved over time, councils generally do not report information on aspects of corporate governance, remuneration of executive staff, personnel, occupational health and safety, equal opportunity policies, and performance information. In addition, the results indicate there is a correlation between the size of the local government and the quality of reporting but the quality of disclosures is not correlated with the timeliness of reports. The study will be of interest to the accounting profession, public sector regulators who are responsible for the integrity of the accountability mechanisms and public sector accounting practitioners. It will form the basis for future longitudinal research, which will map changes in the quality of local government annual reporting. [source]

Views of the downward extension: comparing the Youth Version of the Psychopathy Checklist with the Youth Psychopathic traits Inventory,

BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES & THE LAW, Issue 6 2003
Jennifer L. Skeem Ph.D.
Increasing interest in "juvenile psychopathy" has been met with scholarly debate about the validity of directly extending the adult construct of psychopathic personality disorder to youth. To inform this debate, this study of 160 serious adolescent offenders compared two alternative, adult-based conceptualizations of juvenile psychopathy: that of the Psychopathy Checklist: Youth Version (PCL:YV) and the self-report Youth Psychopathic traits Inventory (YPI). The results indicate that these two conceptualizations overlap only partially, with the YPI focusing more tightly on core interpersonal and affective features than the PCL:YV. Each conceptualization is reliable and predicts different forms of short-term institutional misbehavior. However, only the YPI possesses a theoretically coherent, inverse association with anxiety. Despite this promise, these conceptualizations of psychopathy are less strongly associated with one another than they are with psychosocial markers of developmental maturity. This raises questions about their divergent validity and ability to identify a disorder that will remain stable during the transition from adolescence into adulthood. Implications for future longitudinal research on the validity, manifestations, and course of juvenile psychopathy are discussed. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]
