Selected AbstractsFrequency of intrusive luxation in deciduous teeth and its effectsDENTAL TRAUMATOLOGY, Issue 4 2010Vivian Carvalho Second, to investigate the sequelae of total and partial intrusive luxation in the primary anterior teeth and in their successors and finally, to establish whether the sequelae on both deciduous and permanent teeth were related to the child's age at the time of the intrusion. Data collected from records of 169 boys and 138 girls, all between the ages of zero and 10 years, who were undergoing treatment during the period of March 1996 to December 2004. The sample was composed of 753 traumatized deciduous teeth, of which 221 presented intrusive luxation injury. Children with ages ranging from one to 4 years were the most affected with falls being the main cause of intrusion. Of all intruded teeth 128 (57.9%) were totally intruded and 93 (42.1%) partially. Pulp necrosis/premature loss and color change were the most frequent sequelae in both total and partial intrusions. Concerning permanent dentition, the most common disturbances were color change and/or enamel hypoplasia. Both types of intrusion caused eruption disturbance. Total intrusion was the most frequent type of intrusive luxation. There was no significant correlation between the child's age at the time of intrusion and the frequency of subsequent sequela on primary injured teeth (P = 0.035), between the age at the time of injury and the developmental disturbances on permanent teeth (P = 0.140). Roizen Abstract In their role as committed advocates, parents of children with Down syndrome have always sought alternative therapies, mainly to enhance cognitive function but also to improve their appearance. Nutritional supplements have been the most frequent type of complementary and alternative therapy used. Cell therapy, plastic surgery, hormonal therapy, and a host of other therapies such as massage therapy have been used. There is a lack of well-designed scientific studies on the use of alternative therapies in individuals with Down syndrome. Antioxidants hold theoretical promise for treatment of the cognitive, immune, malignancy, and premature aging problems associated with Down syndrome. Among the recently described molecular and phenotypic classes of breast cancer, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive tumours are associated with a poor prognosis. HER2 plays an important role in cancer progression being targeted to provide predictive and prognostic information. Moreover, HER2 is related to cancer resistance against a variety of therapies; however, trastuzumab (herceptin) has proved successful in treatment of this subgroup. Nevertheless, resistance to this drug may be acquired by patients after a period of treatment, which indicates that other molecular mechanisms might influence success of this therapy. Dimerization between members of the HER family may contribute to resistance against treatments due to different combinations that trigger different downstream pathways. This is promoted by ligands, which are expressed as transmembrane precursor protein molecules and have a conserved epidermal growth factor-like domain. Through resistance to trastuzumab, other drugs are being developed to interact in different domains of HER2 protein. It might be a good strategy to apply new drugs simultaneously to trastuzumab due to act in different domains of HER2. The study of interaction between receptors/ligands will characterize specifically their signalling pathway and understand which strategy to acquire. [source] Infection probability score, APACHE II and KARNOFSKY scoring systems as predictors of infection onset in haematology,oncology patientsJOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 11-12 2010Eleni Apostolopolou Aim., To assess the predictive power of three systems: Infection Probability Score, APACHE II and KARNOFSKY score to the onset of healthcare-associated infections in haematology,oncology patients. Background., The high incidence of healthcare-associated infections is a frequent problem in haematology,oncology patients that affects morbidity and mortality of these patients. Design., A retrospective surveillance survey. Method., The survey was conducted for seven months in the haematology unit of a general hospital in Greece to assess the predictive power of Infection Probability Score, APACHE II and KARNOFSKY score to the onset of healthcare-associated infections. The sample consisted of 102 hospitalised patients. The diagnosis of healthcare-associated infections was based on the definitions proposed by CDC. Results., Among the participants, 53 (52%) were males and 49 (48%) were females with a mean age of 53·30 (SD 18·59) years old (range, 17,85 years). The incidence density of healthcare-associated infections (the number of new cases of healthcare-associated infections per 1000 patient-days) was 21·8 infections per 1000 patient-days. Among the 102 patients, healthcare-associated infections occurred in 32 (31·4%) patients who had a total of 48 healthcare-associated infections (47·5%). Among the 38 patients with neutropenia, 26 (68·4%) had more than one healthcare-associated infection. Of the 48 detected healthcare-associated infections, the most frequent type was blood-stream infection (n = 17, 35·4%), followed by Clostridium difficile infection (n = 11, 22·9%) and respiratory tract infection (n = 8, 3·4%). The best cut-off value of Infection Probability Score (IPS) for the prediction of a healthcare-associated infection was 10 with sensitivity of 59·4% and specificity of 74·3%. Conclusions., Between the three different prognostic scoring systems, IPS had the best sensitivity in predicting healthcare-associated infections. Relevance to clinical practice., IPS is an effective tool and should be used from nurses for the early detection of haematology,oncology patients who are susceptible to the onset of a healthcare-associated infection. Aledort Summary. Thrombosis is a rare but well-recognized potential complication of Factor VIII Inhibitor Bypass Activity (FEIBA) infusion. Recombinant factor VIIa (rFVIIa) is increasingly used as an alternative to FEIBA; however, the thrombotic safety profile of rFVIIa remains incompletely characterized. To determine the incidence rates of thrombotic adverse events (AEs) after infusion of rFVIIa and FEIBA. Data from the MedWatch pharmacovigilance program of the US Food and Drug Administration, as supplemented by published case reports, were used in conjunction with estimated numbers of infusions available from manufacturers to assess comparative incidence of thrombotic AEs in patients receiving rFVIIa or FEIBA in the period from April 1999 through June 2002. Reported thrombotic AEs were rare, with incidence rates of 24.6 per 105 infusions (CI, 19.1,31.2 per 105 infusions) for rFVIIa and 8.24 per 105 infusions (CI, 4.71,13.4 per 105 infusions) for FEIBA. Thrombotic AEs were significantly more frequent in rFVIIa than FEIBA recipients (incidence rate ratio, 2.98; CI, 1.71,5.52). The most commonly documented single type of thrombotic AE after rFVIIa infusion was cerebrovascular thrombosis, while myocardial infarction was the most frequent type in patients receiving FEIBA. Contrasting AE reporting patterns between rFVIIa and FEIBA may have contributed to the observed difference in thrombotic event incidence. Nevertheless, this comprehensive pharmacovigilance assessment does not support superior thrombotic safety of rFVIIa and suggests that thrombotic AE risk may be higher in rFVIIa than FEIBA recipients. [source] Academic misconduct among medical students in a post-communist countryMEDICAL EDUCATION, Issue 3 2004Maja Hrabak Aim, To assess the prevalence of, attitudes towards and willingness to report different forms of academic dishonesty among medical students in a post-communist transitional country. Methods, An anonymous, self-administered questionnaire was distributed to medical students in Years 2,6 at the Zagreb University School of Medicine; 827 (70%) valid questionnaires were returned and analysed. Results, Most of the students (94%) admitted cheating at least once during their studies. The most frequent type of misconduct was ,signing in an absent student on a class attendance list' (89.1%), and the least frequent ,paying for passing an examination' (0.7%). The number of committed types of misconduct out of 11 listed types increased from Year 2 (median 2) to Year 6 (median 4). Cheating behaviours could be clustered into 4 groups based on self-reported cheating, perceived prevalence of cheating, attitude towards cheating, and willingness to report cheating. The clustered behaviours that most students admitted to were perceived as the most frequent, more approved of and less likely to be reported. The strongest predictors of dishonest behaviour were attitude, perception of peer group behaviour and study year. Almost half (44%) the students said they would never report any form of cheating. Conclusion, Academic misconduct is widespread among medical students at the largest medical school in Croatia and its prevalence is greater than that reported for developed countries. This may be related to social and cultural factors specific to a country in the midst of a post-communist transition to a market economy, and calls for measures to be instigated at an institutional level to educate against and prevent such behaviour. [source] What Does Metalinguistic Activity in Learners' Interaction During a Collaborative L2 Writing Task Look Like?MODERN LANGUAGE JOURNAL, Issue 4 2008XAVIER GUTIÉRREZ This article examines the metalinguistic activity that arose in the interaction of 7 groups of bilingual learners writing collaboratively in their second language (L2), English. A microanalysis of this interaction reveals that metalinguistic activity comprises 3 types of oral production: comments, speech actions, and text reformulations. Text reformulations were the most frequent type of oral production in 4 of the 7 groups, whereas in the remaining 3 groups, comments were the most frequent. Moreover, the analysis shows that comments always constituted explicit metalinguistic activity, that speech actions always comprised implicit metalinguistic activity, and that text reformulations could contain either explicit or implicit metalinguistic activity. All groups in the study exhibited implicit metalinguistic activity more frequently than explicit metalinguistic activity. Based on these findings, this article shows the importance of implicit metalinguistic activity in collaborative interaction and argues that it is a significant component of attention to language that has largely been ignored in the literature. It also argues that implicit metalinguistic activity needs to be examined further to determine the language representations underlying this activity. The article concludes by outlining a working hypothesis about the nature of these representations. [source] Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the cadherin 23 (CDH23) gene in Polish workers exposed to industrial noise,AMERICAN JOURNAL OF HUMAN BIOLOGY, Issue 4 2008Mariola Sliwinska-Kowalska Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most frequent type of variation in the human genome and may underlie differential susceptibility to common genetic diseases. A candidate gene for susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is Cadherin 23 (CDH23). This study aimed to analyze genetic variation in the CDH23 gene in a group of 10 individuals derived from a cohort of 949 workers exposed to noise, and consisted of five persons from each of the resistant and susceptible extremes. DNA samples were collected and the coding exons of CDH23 were sequenced. We identified a total of 35 SNPs: 11 amino acid substitutions, 8 silent nucleotide changes, and 16 substitutions in intervening sequences. Ten of the 11 amino acid substitutions were previously shown also to segregate in a Cuban population. The nonsynonymous SNPs localized to the part of the gene encoding the extracellular domain of Cadherin 23, in particular ectodomains 5, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, and 22. One amino acid change occurred at a conserved position in ectodomain 5. Our results provide a framework for future study of polymorphisms in CDH23 as risk factor for NIHL. Am. J. Hum. Biol., 2008. [source] A Chilean boy with severe photosensitivity and finger shortening: the first case of homozygous variegate porphyria in South AmericaBRITISH JOURNAL OF DERMATOLOGY, Issue 2 2006P. Poblete-Gutiérrez Summary A 7-year-old Chilean boy presented with severe photosensitivity, blistering, erosions and scarring on sun-exposed areas of the body since the age of 6 months. Additionally, he showed a short stature and shortening of the fingers. Laboratory examination revealed greatly elevated protoporphyrin levels in the blood. Such biochemical findings can be observed in homozygous variants of usually autosomal dominantly inherited acute porphyrias such as variegate porphyria (VP) and hereditary coproporphyria, which usually do not become manifest before the second or third decade of life in heterozygotes. Using polymerase chain reaction-based techniques we identified a missense mutation in exon 7 on the paternal allele and a frameshift mutation in exon 13 on the maternal allele of the protoporphyrinogen oxidase gene that harbours the mutations underlying VP. This is the first homozygous case of VP in South America. As VP represents the most frequent type of acute porphyria not only in Chile but also in South Africa, more such cases could be expected in the future, particularly because a founder mutation for this disease has already been described in the Chilean and South African population. [source] Ophthalmic lymphoma: epidemiology and pathogenesisACTA OPHTHALMOLOGICA, Issue thesis1 2009Lene Dissing Sjö Abstract With a lifetime risk of 1% and 700 new cases per year, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is the seventh most frequent type of cancer in Denmark. The incidence of NHL has increased considerably in Western countries over the last decades; consequently, NHL is an increasing clinical problem. Ophthalmic lymphoma, (lymphoma localized in the ocular region, i.e. eyelid, conjunctiva, lacrimal sac, lacrimal gland, orbit, or intraocularly) is relatively uncommon, accounting for 5%,10% of all extranodal lymphomas. It is, however, the most common orbital malignancy. The purpose of this thesis was to review specimens from all Danish patients with a diagnosis of ophthalmic lymphoma during the period 1980,2005, in order to determine the distribution of lymphoma subtypes, and the incidence- and time trends in incidence for ophthalmic lymphoma. Furthermore, an extended analysis of the most frequent subtype, extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (MALT lymphoma), was done to analyse clinical factors and cytogenetic changes with influence on prognosis. A total of 228 Danish patients with a biopsy-reviewed verified diagnosis of ocular adnexal-, orbital-, or intraocular lymphoma were identified. We found that more than 50% of orbital- and ocular adnexal lymphomas were of the MALT lymphoma subtype, whereas diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) predominated intraocularly (Sjo et al. 2008a). Furthermore, lymphoma arising in the lacrimal sac was surprisingly predominantly DLBCL (Sjo et al. 2006). Incidence rates were highly dependent on patient age. There was an increase in incidence rates for the whole population from 1980 to 2005, corresponding to an annual average increase of 3.4% (Sjo et al. 2008a). MALT lymphoma arising in the ocular region was found in 116 patients (Sjo et al. 2008b). One third of patients had a relapse or progression of disease after initial therapy and relapses were frequently found at extra-ocular sites. Overall survival, however, was not significantly poorer for patients with relapse. Furthermore, we found that the frequency of translocations involving the MALT1- and IGH-gene loci is low in ocular region MALT lymphoma (2 of 42, 5%), but may predict increased risk of relapse (Sjo et al. 2008b). In conclusion the incidence of ophthalmic lymphoma is increasing at a high rate in Denmark. Ophthalmic lymphoma consists primarily of MALT lymphoma. The molecular pathogenesis of MALT lymphoma arising in the ocular region rarely involves translocations in the MALT1- and IGH-gene loci. [source] Nosocomial infection in a Danish Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: a prospective studyACTA PAEDIATRICA, Issue 8 2009Anne L Olsen Abstract Aim:, The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence and identify independent risk factors for nosocomial infections in a Danish Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and to compare these findings with international results. Methods:, The study was performed prospectively from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2005 in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen. Specific criteria for blood stream infection and respiratory tract infection adapted for neonates in our ward were worked out. Results:, Six hundred and eighty-three patients were included. The overall incidence of nosocomial infection was 8.8/1000 hospital days. Blood stream infection was the most frequent type of infection, with an incidence of 5.1/1000 hospital days. Multivariate analysis showed gestational age and heart disease to be significant independent risk factors for both first time blood stream infection and respiratory tract infection, and central venous catheter and parenteral nutrition risk factors for first time blood stream infection. Conclusion:, This first prospective study of nosocomial infection in a Danish Neonatal Intensive Care Unit found an overall incidence of 8.8/1000 hospital days, which is low or similar compared to other studies. Further Danish multicentre studies are needed, and we suggest that procedures related to central venous catheters should be a future focus area. [source] Clinical and molecular epidemiology of community-acquired, healthcare-associated and nosocomial methicillin-resistant Staphylococus aureus in SpainCLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY AND INFECTION, Issue 12 2009J. Rodríguez-Baño Abstract A prospective cohort study including all new cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization or infection in 64 Spanish hospitals during June 2003 was performed to investigate the epidemiology of MRSA in Spain. Only patients who yielded clinical MRSA-positive samples were included. Epidemiological and clinical data for a total of 370 cases were collected. Genotyping was performed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing. Panton,Valentine leukocidin genes and the staphylococcal chromosomal cassette mec (SCCmec) were identified in representative isolates. MRSA was considered to be nosocomially acquired in 202 cases (55%), healthcare-associated (HCA) in 139 cases (38%), community-acquired (CA) in three cases, and of uncertain mode of acquisition in 26 (7%) cases. The pooled population-based rate was 2.31 cases/100 000 population/month, and the pooled nosocomial rate was 0.21 cases/1000 hospital stays (20.2% of S. aureus). Peripheral vascular disease, respiratory tract infections, catheter infections, bloodstream infections and crude mortality were more frequent among HCA cases, whereas neoplasia and urinary tract infections were more frequent among nosocomially acquired cases. Two clones related to the paediatric clone ST5-IV accounted for 71% of the isolates; EMRSA-16 has emerged in two different geographical areas. Only one isolate belonged to the formerly predominant Iberian clone. The three CA isolates were related to the USA300 clone. SCCmec type IV was the most frequent type in nosocomial and HCA isolates. The epidemiology of MRSA has changed in Spain; outpatients with previous healthcare contact represent a very important reservoir of MRSA, and community isolates are emerging. [source] Epilepsy in Colombia: Epidemiologic Profile and Classification of Epileptic Seizures and SyndromesEPILEPSIA, Issue 1 2006Alberto Velez Summary:,Purpose: A national study was performed in Colombia to determine the general and regional prevalence of epilepsy, clinical profiles, seizure types, and clinical syndromes. Methods: Based on the National Epidemiological Study of Neurological Diseases (EPINEURO), we evaluated and followed up for 1 year all the subjects with epilepsy from the National Sample. Clinical profiles were further assessed. Seizure types and epilepsy syndromes were established according to the international classifications. Results: General prevalence was found to be 11.3 per 1,000, with little variation among regions, except the eastern region, where prevalence was 23 per 1,000; prevalence for active epilepsy was 10.1 per 1,000. Women have a slightly greater (not statistically significant) risk. Most seizures are focal (partial), frequently with secondary generalization. The most frequent epilepsy syndrome encountered was partial symptomatic/cryptogenic (80%). Epilepsy onset in Colombia occurs most frequently in childhood. Conclusions: Prevalence rates of epilepsy in Colombia are similar to those reported in nations with comparable developmental status and have diminished over time. The study presents the distribution of seizures and syndromes. The most frequent types are focal syndromes. Dakin Summary Reasons for performing study: Osseous abnormalities. associated with collateral ligament (CL) injury of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint have been documented using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) but there is currently limited information about the frequency of osseous pathology associated with CL injury. Objectives: To determine the frequency of occurrence of osseous abnormality coexistent with CL injury of the DIP joint and describe the distribution and character of osseous lesions; and to establish if there was an association between osseous abnormality and increased radiopharmaceutical uptake (IRU). Hypotheses: There would be a higher incidence of osseous abnormality at the insertion of an injured CL than at the origin; and a relationship between the presence of osseous abnormality and duration of lameness. Materials and methods: Magnetic resonance images of 313 feet of 289 horses with foot pain and a definitive diagnosis of collateral desmopathy of the DIP joint were analysed retrospectively for presence and type of osseous abnormality in the middle and distal phalanges. Scintigraphic images were examined and the presence of IRU in the middle or distal phalanges recorded. Results: Osseous abnormalities were detected in 143 (45.7%) feet, 27 (18.8%) of which had osseous and CL injury alone, while the remaining 116 had CL related osseous injury and multiple injuries within the hoof capsule. Entheseous new bone and endosteal irregularity of the middle and distal phalanges were the most frequent types of osseous abnormality. There was a higher incidence of osseous abnormalities medially than laterally and at the ligament insertion than at the origin. There was a significant association between presence of IRU and osseous injury. Conclusions: A variety of osseous lesions of differing severity are associated with CL injury. Normal radiopharmaceutical uptake does not preclude significant osseous pathology associated with CL injury. Clinical relevance: Further studies are necessary in order to determine if osseous abnormalities associated with CL injury influence prognosis for return to performance. Ireland Abstract The present study explored the perceptions and experiences of the nature, extent and causes of bullying among personality-disordered patients, with a subsidiary aim of exploring differences in perceptions between staff and patients. The sample was selected from the Personality Disorder Unit of a high secure hospital. The total sample consisted of 60 participants, 30 patients and 30 staff. Participants engaged in a semi-structured interview based on that developed by Brookes [1993] and modified by Ireland and Archer [1996] and Ireland [2002a]. The interview assessed their perceptions and experiences of patient-to-patient bullying. One fifth of patients and staff reported that they had seen a patient being bullied in the previous week. One-fifth of patients reported that they had been bullied in the previous week and less than one tenth reported that they had bullied others. The most frequent types of bullying reported were theft-related, verbal abuse, being made to do chores, physical assaults and intimidation. One fifth of the sample reported that sexual abuse took place. Victims were generally perceived to be ,easy targets' that were vulnerable, either physically or emotionally. Staff identified a wider range of victim types than patients. The results highlight how patient-to-patient bullying does occur and is an important issue worthy of further research. A number of similarities were found between the current findings and those of prison-based research suggesting that both hospitals and prisons share a number of environmental similarities that help to explain why bullying takes placed in secure forensic settings. [source] Cysteine enhances clastogenic activity of dimethylarsinic acidAPPLIED ORGANOMETALLIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 7 2002Mari Kitamura Abstract The effects of cysteine on dimethylarsinic acid (DMA)-induced cytotoxicity and chromosomal aberration were studied using Chinese hamster V79 cells. The IC 50 of DMA, i.e. the concentration resulting in a 50% decrease in cell population of viable cells, was 130,µg,ml,1 (0.94 mM), whereas that in the presence of 50,µg,ml,1 (0.28 mM) cysteine was 20,µg,ml,1 (0.14 mM). The mitotic index with co-administration of 50,µg,ml,1 (0.36 mM) DMA and 50,µg,ml,1 cysteine was 1.4 times that with 50,µg,ml,1 DMA alone. Whereas 82% of cells divided twice with 25,µg,ml,1 (0.18 mM) DMA alone, most cells divided only once with co-administration of 25,µg,ml,1 DMA and 50,µg,ml,1 cysteine. These results indicated that the increase in mitotic index by cysteine was due to enhancement of mitotic arrest by DMA. With co-administration of 25,µg,ml,1 DMA and 50,µg,ml,1 cysteine, tetraploidy was 14.3% higher and fivefold by that with 25,µg,ml,1 DMA only. Cysteine at 50,µg,ml,1 enhanced induction of chromosomal aberrant cells by DMA. 100,µg,ml,1 (0.72 mM) DMA induced 91% chromosomal aberrant cells in the presence of cysteine, and 12% in the absence of cysteine. Chromatid breaks and chromatid gaps were the most frequent types of aberration induced by co-administration of DMA and cysteine or DMA alone. Co-administration of DMA and cysteine produced many attenuated chromosomal figures. The attenuated chromosomal figures always had several chromatid gaps and chromatid breaks. Aims:, The aim of the study was to conduct a retrospective audit of SAMM cases (pregnant women admitted to a New Zealand Intensive Care Unit) to describe clinical, socio-demographic characteristics, pregnancy outcomes and preventability. Methods:, Severe acute maternal morbidity cases were reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel to determine reasons for admission to ICU, to classify organ-system dysfunction and to determine whether the SAMM case was preventable or not. Inclusion criteria were: admission to ICU between 2005 and 2007 during pregnancy or within 42 days of delivery. Results:, Twenty-nine SAMM cases were reviewed, of which 10 (35%) were deemed preventable. The most common reasons for transfer to ICU were: the need for invasive vascular monitoring, hypotension and disseminated intravascular coagulation. The most frequent types of preventable events were: inadequate diagnosis/recognition of high-risk status, inappropriate treatment, communication problems and inadequate documentation. All five SAMM cases of septicaemia were deemed preventable. Of the ten preventable cases, three were Maori (50% of the Maori in total audit), four were Pacific (67% of the Pacific in total audit) and three were women of ,other' ethnicities (17.6%, 3 of 17 in the audit). Conclusions:, An audit of SAMM cases describing reasons for transfer to ICU and preventability is feasible. We recommend that a prospective national SAMM audit process be introduced in New Zealand as a quality of care measure. Fluhr Summary Background, Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is one of the most frequent types of occupational dermatitis. Different factors are involved in the development of contact dermatitis. In the food-processing industry, the combined exposure to different irritants may be involved in the development of ICD. Few data have been published regarding the irritant potential of sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) in combination with cold. Objectives, The present study was intended to analyse whether cold exposure and low skin temperature influence the development of ICD. Methods, Twenty (part I) and 12 (part II) healthy volunteers were exposed twice daily for 4 days to SLS alone, different low temperatures alone (4 °C six times for 90 s with an interval of 20 s or 15 °C for 10 min) or a combination of cold and SLS (19·6 µL SLS 1% cm,2, part I; or 52·6 µL SLS 0·5% cm,2, part II) using the tandem repetitive irritation test. Irritant cutaneous reactions were measured by noninvasive biophysical methods with transepidermal water loss as a parameter for permeability barrier function and skin colour reflectance together with visual scoring as parameters for inflammatory reactions. Results, Cold alone caused no significant skin reaction compared with untreated control. Exposure to SLS alone and SLS together with cold (independent of the applied temperature of 4 or 15 °C) twice daily induced a clear irritant reaction and barrier disturbance. Reactions did not differ whether SLS was applied before or after cold. Furthermore, ,tandem application' of cold and SLS diminished the barrier disruption and irritant reaction compared with SLS alone. Conclusions, We conclude that the application of cold may have a protective effect on the development of ICD, at least in our short-term model. [source] |
