Changes in the contractile properties of motor units in the rat medial gastrocnemius muscle after one month of treadmill training

Abstract Aim:, The influence of 4 weeks treadmill training on the contractile properties of motor units (MUs) in the rat medial gastrocnemius muscle was investigated. Methods:, A population of 18 Wistar rats was divided into two groups: trained on a treadmill (n = 7, locomotion speed 27 cm s,1, 1 km daily, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks) and control (n = 11). The contractile properties of isolated MUs were studied. Functional isolation of units was achieved by electrical stimulation of filaments of the ventral roots. A total of 299 MUs were investigated (142 in the control group and 157 in the trained group). They were divided into fast fatigable (FF), fast resistant to fatigue (FR) and slow (S). Their proportions and parameters of contractions were analysed. Results:, Following training, the number of FF units decreased and the number of FR units increased. The distribution of the fatigue index changed within these two types of fast units. The twitch and tetanus forces increased considerably in fast MUs, mainly in those of the FF type. The contraction and relaxation times shortened in the FR and S MUs. The steep part of the force,frequency curves shifted towards higher stimulation frequencies in FR and S units, while in FF units the shift was in the opposite direction. Conclusion:, The significant change in the proportions of fast MUs following training indicates FF to FR transformation. The various effects of training seen in the different MU types help explain the rationale behind mixed training. [source]


Primary particle size distribution of eroded material affected by degree of aggregate slaking and seal development

Summary Primary particle size distribution (PSD) of eroded sediment can be used to estimate potential nutrient losses from soil and pollution hazards to the environment. We studied eroded sediment PSDs from three saturated soils, packed in trays (20 × 40 × 4 cm), that had undergone either minimal aggregate slaking (MAS) or severe aggregate slaking (SAS) prior to a 60 mm simulated rainstorm (kinetic energy, 15.9 kJ m,3; droplet diameter, 2.97 mm) and collected runoff at regular intervals. The degree of aggregate slaking was controlled by the rate at which soils were wetted to saturation. The PSDs of eroded materials and of parent soils were determined using a laser particle size analyser. For each soil, PSD frequency curves of eroded sediments and parent soils were generally of a similar shape but most eroded sediments had larger clay contents than their parent soils. In the SAS treatment, cumulative clay enrichment in the eroded materials was inversely related to the parent soil clay content, these being 28.5, 26.6 and 22.8% richer in clay than their parent soils for the loam, sandy clay and clay, respectively. Generally, total clay loss was greater from soils with SAS than from those with MAS because of erosion rates; however, clay enrichment of sediments, compared with parent soil clay contents, was mostly greater in samples with MAS. Greater clay enrichment took place during the early seal development stage in the loam, but could not readily be associated with specific stages of seal development for the clay. In the sandy clay, the relation between seal development and clay enrichment in the eroded material depended on the initial degree of aggregate slaking. The observed large preferential loss of clay by erosion in cultivated soils re-emphasizes the need to employ erosion control measures. [source]


Acrylic polymers as thickening agents for tetraglycol cosolvent

Abstract This article evaluated the thickening properties of two different Eudragits, L and RS, in tetraglycol cosolvent in order to obtain high viscosity systems characterized by controlled release properties. Tetraglycol was chosen for its ability to dissolve a wide range of water insoluble drugs, while Eudragit RS and L for their specific dissolution and permeability properties under physiological conditions. Study of the rheological properties was performed to characterize elastic and viscous properties of Eudragit/tetraglycol samples in function of frequency and temperature. For all systems, the results outlined a liquid like behavior, as observed for dilute polymer solutions. In fact the fitting of the log G,-log G,, versus frequency curves showed a good agreement with the Rouse or Zimm models. So despite the increase in viscosity, samples still behaved like liquid systems. After the addition of paracetamol the release characteristics were defined pointing out the great release control properties of both Eudragit L and RS, which showed different release kinetics depending on the pH of the environment. HYDROLOGIC SIMULATION OF THE LITTLE WASHITA RIVER EXPERIMENTAL WATERSHED USING SWAT,

ABSTRACT: Precipitation and streamflow data from three nested subwatersheds within the Little Washita River Experimental Watershed (LWREW) in southwestern Oklahoma were used to evaluate the capabilities of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to predict streamflow under varying climatic conditions. Eight years of precipitation and streamflow data were used to calibrate parameters in the model, and 15 years of data were used for model validation. SWAT was calibrated on the smallest and largest sub-watersheds for a wetter than average period of record. The model was then validated on a third subwatershed for a range in climatic conditions that included dry, average, and wet periods. Calibration of the model involved a multistep approach. A preliminary calibration was conducted to estimate model parameters so that measured versus simulated yearly and monthly runoff were in agreement for the respective calibration periods. Model parameters were then fine tuned based on a visual inspection of daily hydrographs and flow frequency curves. Calibration on a daily basis resulted in higher baseflows and lower peak runoff rates than were obtained in the preliminary calibration. Test results show that once the model was calibrated for wet climatic conditions, it did a good job in predicting streamflow responses over wet, average, and dry climatic conditions selected for model validation. Monthly coefficients of efficiencies were 0.65, 0.86, and 0.45 for the dry, average, and wet validation periods, respectively. Results of this investigation indicate that once calibrated, SWAT is capable of providing adequate simulations for hydrologic investigations related to the impact of climate variations on water resources of the LWREW. Anisotropic FMR-linewidth of triple-domain Fe layers on hexagonal GaN(0001)

Abstract We present a ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) study of Fe films with thicknesses between 5 and 70 nm prepared by electron-beam evaporation on top of hexagonal GaN(0001). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) suggest the growth in crystallographic Fe(110) domains with three different orientations. The magnetic properties have been investigated by in-plane angle-dependent FMR at frequencies between 4.5 to 24 GHz. All samples show a hexagonal in-plane anisotropy with the easy axes oriented parallel to the Fe [001] directions. The anisotropy field strength of about 8 mT reveals a bulk-like thickness dependence. Therefore, we can exclude the following origins of anisotropy: (i) interface effects because of the bulk-like thickness dependence and (ii) averaged first order cubic or uniaxial anisotropies arising from the three grain orientations because of the relative strengths. We qualitatively explain the sixfold anisotropy by spin relaxation inside the grains. The FMR linewidth versus frequency curves are linear with almost no zero-frequency offset indicating a good homogeneity of the magnetic properties over the sample area. However, the effective damping parameter , shows pronounced anisotropy and thickness dependence, with enhanced damping along the hard axes and for thicker layers. We suggest that the additional damping can be explained by two-magnon scattering at defects which are due to the triple domain structure. (© 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Combining Multiple Quantitative and Qualitative Goals When Assessing Biomanufacturing Strategies under Uncertainty

This paper reports how financial and operational results from bioprocess simulations can be combined with other criteria pertinent to decision-making predictions to provide a more holistic approach to the evaluation of biomanufacturing alternatives. The classical additive weighting method, which is a multiattribute decision-making technique that can account for both the quantitative and qualitative parameters that ultimately need to be considered, is used. Its application is demonstrated through a case study that addresses whether start-up companies should invest in a stainless steel pilot plant or use disposable equipment for the production of early phase clinical trial material. The technique is extended to allow for uncertainty in parameters. An illustration of its use to compare alternatives based on cumulative frequency curves of the aggregate scores is provided. For cases where it is difficult to discriminate between the options, plots of risk versus reward are shown to be useful for identifying the best alternative based on the risk preference of the companyapos;s management.
