Selected AbstractsBuilding drought management capacity in the Mekong River basin,IRRIGATION AND DRAINAGE, Issue 3 2008Wilfried Hundertmark gestion de la sécheresse; développement des capacités; organisation de bassin; Mékong Abstract Over the past decades the Mekong River basin has experienced several droughts, the most recent of which occurred in the hydrological year 2004/2005. Impacts extended across agriculture, forestry, water resources, supply, industry, transport and the environment. In early 2006, the Mekong River Commission Secretariat initiated close consultations with the MRC member states Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam, aiming at the formulation of a common Drought Management Programme, which would enhance the existing drought management capacity and ensure effective support. This paper draws attention to the programme formulation process. It shows how national capacity needs were assessed and synthesized into a basin-wide capacity development programme. The paper concludes that in the context of international waters enhancing cooperation and capacity in drought management requires a strategic framework as an overall guideline for programme formulation and implementation. It defines a common terminology, mechanisms and linkages to integrated water resources management plans. The programme's long-term success depends on the ability to sustain the interest of the national partner institutions. Ultimately, enhanced capacity in drought management must demonstrate its impact on the level of vulnerability of the population living under drought-prone conditions. L'impact a concerné l'agriculture, la forêt, les ressources en eau, la distribution, l'industrie, les transports et l'environnement. Au début de 2006, le Secrétariat de la Commission du Mékong a entamé des consultations étroites avec les états membres, le Cambodge, la RDP du Laos, la Thaïlande et le Vietnam, visant à l'élaboration d'un programme commun de gestion de la sécheresse, qui permettrait de renforcer les capacités existantes de gestion de la sécheresse et d'assurer un soutien efficace. Cet article attire l'attention sur le processus de formulation des programmes. Il montre comment les besoins nationaux de formation ont été évalués et synthétisés dans un programme de développement des capacités pour l'ensemble du bassin. L'article conclut que, dans le contexte des eaux internationales, le renforcement de la coopération et des capacités dans la gestion de la sécheresse a besoin d'un cadre stratégique d'ensemble et d'un guide global pour la formulation des programmes et leur mise en ,uvre. Il définit une terminologie commune, les mécanismes et les liens avec les plans de gestion intégrée des ressources en eau. Le succès à long terme du programme dépend de la capacité à maintenir l'intérêt des institutions nationales partenaires. En fin de compte, le renforcement des capacités dans la gestion de la sécheresse doit démontrer son impact sur le niveau de vulnérabilité de la population vivant dans les régions soumises à la sécheresse. [source] Multivariate methods in pharmaceutical applicationsJOURNAL OF CHEMOMETRICS, Issue 3 2002Jon Gabrielsson Abstract This review covers material published within the field of pharmacy in the last five years. Articles concerning experimental design, optimization and applications of multivariate techniques have been published, from factorial designs to multivariate data analysis, and the combination of the two in multivariate design. The number of publications on this topic testifies to the good results obtained in the studies. Much of the published material highlights the usefulness of experimental design, with many articles dealing with optimization, where much effort is spent on getting useful results. Examples of multivariate data analysis are comparatively few, but these methods are gaining in use. The employment of multivariate techniques in different applications has been reviewed. The examples in this review represent just a few of the possible applications with different aims within pharmaceutical applications. A number of companies are using experimental design as a standard tool in preformulation and in combination with response surface modeling. The properties of e.g. a tablet can be optimized to fulfill a well-specified aim such as a specific release profile, hardness, disintegration time etc. However, none of the companies apply multivariate methods in all steps of the drug development process. As this is still very much a growing field, it is only a question of time before experimental design, optimization and multivariate data analysis are implemented throughout the entire formulation process, from performulation to multivariate process control. [source] Quantitation of crystalline and amorphous forms of anhydrous neotame using 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopyJOURNAL OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES, Issue 12 2005Thomas J. Offerdahl Abstract Although most drugs are formulated in the crystalline state, amorphous or other crystalline forms are often generated during the formulation process. The presence of other forms can dramatically affect the physical and chemical stability of the drug. The identification and quantitation of different forms of a drug is a significant analytical challenge, especially in a formulated product. The ability of solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy with cross polarization (CP) and magic-angle spinning (MAS) to quantify the amounts of three of the multiple crystalline and amorphous forms of the artificial sweetener neotame is described. It was possible to quantify, in a mixture of two anhydrous polymorphic forms of neotame, the amount of each polymorph within 1,2%. In mixtures of amorphous and crystalline forms of neotame, the amorphous content could be determined within 5%. It was found that the crystalline standards that were used to prepare the mixtures were not pure crystalline forms, but rather a mixture of crystalline and amorphous forms. The effect of amorphous content in the crystalline standards on the overall quantitation of the two crystalline polymorphic forms is discussed. The importance of differences in relaxation parameters and CP efficiencies on quantifying mixtures of different forms using solid-state NMR spectroscopy is also addressed. © 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc. and the American Pharmacists Association J Pharm Sci 94:2591,2605, 2005 [source] The Performance Impact of Content and Process in Product Innovation ChartersTHE JOURNAL OF PRODUCT INNOVATION MANAGEMENT, Issue 1 2007Chris Bart The significance of product innovation charters (PICs) cannot be overemphasized, as they provide understanding and a tool for setting organizational goals, charting strategic direction, and allocating resources for new product portfolios. In a unique way, a PIC represents a sort of mission statement mutation for new products. With the backdrop of strategy formulation and product innovation literatures, this article investigates the impact of both content specificity within PICs and satisfaction with the PIC formulation process on new product performance in North American corporations. A survey was undertaken among executives knowledgeable about their organization's new product development process. The respondents included chief executive officers, vice presidents, directors, and managers. The findings demonstrate that significant differences exist both in PIC content specificity and process satisfaction between highly innovative and low innovative firms. The study also shows that PIC specificity in terms of the factors mission content and strategic directives positively influences new product performance. Further, the study demonstrates that satisfaction with the process of formulating PICs plays a positive and powerful mediating role in the PIC specificity,performance relationship. The results suggest that product innovation charters, like their mission statement cousins, may be of more value than most managers realize. The study shows that achieving a state of organizational satisfaction with a PIC's formulation process is critical for obtaining better new product performance. Directions for future research also are suggested. [source] Is Cognitive Case Formulation Science or Science Fiction?CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY: SCIENCE AND PRACTICE, Issue 1 2003Peter J. Bieling As with all systematic models of therapy, cognitive therapy distills a theory to the understanding of particular cases through the case formulation method. This article sets out criteria to evaluate whether cognitive case formulation follows the process of scientific inquiry, and it questions whether the formulation method meets these criteria. In terms of the evidence base for the cognitive theory that underpins cognitive case formulation, the research suggests that although the descriptive elements of cognitive theory are substantiated, the explanatory elements have received less support. In terms of the scientific status of the cognitive case formulation process, current evidence for the reliability of the cognitive case formulation method is modest, at best. There is a striking paucity of research examining the validity of cognitive case formulations or the impact of cognitive case formulation on therapy outcome. Implications for the clinical use of cognitive case formulation within a scientist-practitioner model are discussed, and potential programs of research to evaluate the case formulation method are described. [source] International Strategic Human Resource Management: A Comparative Case Analysis of Spanish Firms in ChinaMANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION REVIEW, Issue 2 2009Yingying Zhang abstract This study examines the role of human resources in strategy formulation processes in China's emerging market. Employing a qualitative data driven thematic analysis, we present evidence collected from six comparative case sites of Spanish firms in China. Our findings suggest that high performing firms use a dynamic adaptive logic while lower performing firms use a static structural logic. A dynamic adaptive model of strategic human resource management is identified, emphasizing a fluid and informal process between strategy, human resources and international management. [source] |
