    Reproductive status in females of the Brazilian catfish, Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum reared in cages

    Summary The distinctive morphological features of the ovaries the ,cachara', Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum were characterized macroscopically, and by histology, when reared in cages, from March 2005 to February 2006. Forty eight females (mean total weight = 2.7 kg, mean standard length = 65.1 cm) were allocated to four cages of 2.7 m3 (20 fish/cage) which were installed in four 600 m2 ponds, located at the IP, Pariquera-Açu, Săo Paulo, Brazil. The monthly, samples were fixed in 4%-buffered formalin before preparation for histological examination, ovaries were removed and weighted. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) was calculated as = 100 × weight ovaries/total fish weight. The ovaries are the cystovarian type and macroscopically, were established three stages of ovarian maturation: Resting, developing Maturation (initial, intermediate, final) and Regression (initial, intermediate, final). Based on morphological criteria of those ovaries, the oocyte development has been divided into distinct stages: (i) oocyte growth (vitellogenesis); (ii) oocyte maturation, along which it goes through different phases of development, before (iii) ovulation and, (iv) spawning. When the P. fasciatum were kept in confinement and not induced to breed occurs fail to attain final oocyte maturation, start the process of degeneration. Consequently, the weight started to decline and 45% of the ovaries showed atresia of vitellogenic follicles. This was considered indicative of a recent cessation of the reproductive activity. Such failure could have been caused by stress of the monthly sampling involving a certain degree of disturbance, and perhaps also by the existence of stressors while in captivity. The synchronous ovary contained oocytes in an unique stage of development and had potential to perform total spawning up to one time a year, with the period reproductive beginning in the end of November to the beginning of February, coinciding with the highest water temperatures in the experimental cages (29.0,31.5°C) and the increase of mean values of GSI. During the regression phase, residual oocytes could be observed together with decrease of the mean values of GSI and, the temperatures. [source]


    Fillet yield and fat content in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) produced in three Austrian carp farms with different culture methodologies

    Summary The fat content and fillet yield of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) from three carp farms were investigated with respect to pond management and overall climatic conditions. The mean fat content of the trimmed fillet varied from 2.7 to 6.9% and differed significantly among the three facilities (P < 0.001). It is suggested that differences in the fillet fat content may be based on the climatic conditions as well as the different management strategies (feeding, stocking biomass). The mean fillet yield was calculated as 34.0,39.0%. No significant correlation between fish weight and fillet yield (, = ,0.16) was found. Results suggest that producing smaller fish for fillets of serving size may lead to a higher production and conclude with lower production risks and costs. [source]


    Salmonid alphavirus (SAV) and pancreas disease (PD) in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in freshwater and seawater sites in Norway from 2006 to 2008

    Abstract A cohort study was initiated in the spring of 2006 to investigate epidemiological aspects and pathogenesis of salmonid alphavirus (SAV) subtype 3 infections and pancreas disease (PD). The aims were to assess involvement of the freshwater production phase, the extent and frequency of subclinical infections and to follow PD-affected populations throughout the entire seawater production cycle, as well as investigate possible risk factors for PD outbreaks. Fish groups from 46 different Atlantic salmon freshwater sites in six counties were sampled once prior to seawater transfer and followed onto their seawater sites. A total of 51 Atlantic salmon seawater sites were included, and fish groups were sampled three times during the seawater production phase. SAV subtype 3 was not identified by real-time RT-PCR from samples collected in the freshwater phase, nor were any SAV-neutralizing antibodies or histopathological changes consistent with PD. In the seawater phase, SAV was detected in samples from 23 of 36 (63.9%) studied sites located within the endemic region. No SAV subtype 3 was detected in samples from seawater sites located outside the endemic region. The cumulative incidence of PD during the production cycle amongst sites with SAV detected was 87% (20 of 23 sites). Average fish weight at time of PD diagnosis ranged from 461 to 5978 g, because of a wide variation in the timing of disease occurrence throughout the production cycle. Mortality levels following a PD diagnosis varied greatly between populations. The mean percentage mortality was 6.9% (±7.06) (range 0.7,26.9), while the mean duration of increased mortality following PD diagnosis was 2.8 months (±1.11) (range 1,6). [source]


    Replacement of Fish Meal with Poultry By-product Meal as a Protein Source in Pond-raised Sunshine Bass, Morone chrysops , × M. saxatlis ,, Diets

    Replacement of fish meal (FM) as a protein source with alternative sources of protein in aquaculture diets has been widely explored in aquaculture. The goal of replacement of FM in production diets is to maintain growth, lower production costs, and increase sustainability. Evaluation of the replacement of FM with poultry by-product meal (PBM) in phase II sunshine bass diets, Morone chrysops × M. saxatilis, was conducted in ponds over 246 d. Four diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous (37%) and isocaloric (4 kcal/g) with different levels of FM replacement with PBM (0, 33, 67, and 100%, Diets 1,4, respectively). Twelve ponds were stocked with 400 phase II sunshine bass (mean weight 5.6 g) and randomly assigned one of the four diets. Fish were fed below satiation based on predicted growth and feed conversion, initially once daily (1700 h) and then twice daily (0700 and 1700 h) as water temperatures and feeding activity increased. Diets were evaluated based on production and performance indicators, body composition, and economic analysis. Production results revealed no significant differences in mean final individual fish weight (511 ± 21 g), net production (4257 ± 247 kg/ha), and survival (85 ± 2%). No significant differences occurred between the performance indicators: mean feed conversion ratio (2.47 ± 0.11), specific growth rate (1.84 ± 0.02), and protein conversion efficiency (23 ± 1.3%). Body composition was statistically similar for mean percent fillet weight (49 ± 0.6%) and percent intraperitoneal fat (9.8 ± 1.0%); however, the hepatosomatic index was significantly different between Diets 3 (3.7 ± 0.1%) and 4 (3.2 ± 0.1%). Mean proximate analysis of whole fish (dry weight basis) was not significantly different among treatments yielding the following: percent protein (46 ± 0.4%), lipid (47 ± 1.3%), and ash (8 ± 0.7%). Mean fillet composition (dry weight basis) also revealed no significant differences: percent protein (72 ± 0.8%), percent lipid (30 ± 1.6%), and percent ash (5 ± 0.2%). Proximate analysis was also performed on the diets and revealed a significantly lower protein content in Diet 3 (34.3 ± 0.5%) compared to the other diets (37.1 ± 0.4%). Amino acid analysis of the diets indicated a possible deficiency in methionine in Diets 3 and 4. Based on production, performance, and body composition, the results indicate that complete replacement of FM with PBM in sunshine bass diets is feasible; however, economic analysis suggests that the replacement of FM with PBM may result in reduced revenue over feed costs.     Effects of an Extended Hatchery Phase and Vaccination against Enteric Septicemia of Catfish on the Production of Channel Catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, Fingerlings

    The present study was conducted to evaluate production management methods to improve overall survival of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, fry to the fingerling stage by incorporating the use of a live, attenuated vaccine against Edwardsiella ictaluri and employing an extended hatchery phase. In this experiment, four treatments were used. In Treatment 1, 10-d posthatch (PH) fry were vaccinated and then directly stocked into earthen ponds. In Treatments 2 and 3, 10-d PH fry were sham-vaccinated (control) and vaccinated, respectively, kept in nursery tanks for 22 d, and then stocked into earthen ponds. Fry in Treatment 4 were sham-vaccinated at 10 d PH, kept in nursery tanks for 22 d, and then vaccinated prior to stocking into earthen ponds. Mean fingerling yield at harvest ranged from 4716 kg/ha in Treatment 1 to 8112 kg/ha in Treatment 4. Mean individual fish weight ranged from 38.8 g in Treatment 1 to 40.9 g in Treatment 4, and feed conversion ratios (FCR) ranged from 1.15 in Treatment 4 to 1.51 in Treatment 1. Mean survival ranged from 47.5% in Treatment 1 to 73.4% in Treatment 4. In specific comparisons to evaluate the nursery effect (Treatments 1 and 3), yield and overall survival were significantly different (P < 0.05) between these two treatments. In specific comparisons to evaluate the effect of the use of the vaccine (Treatments 2, 3, and 4), overall survival was significantly different (P < 0.05) between Treatment 2 (sham-vaccinated control with nursery phase) and Treatment 4 (vaccinated at 32 d PH with nursery phase). No significant differences (P > 0.05) in yield, average weight, and FCR were observed between treatments. Results indicate that implementing an extended hatchery phase and vaccination strategy with older fry can improve overall survival of fingerling fish. [source]


    Growth of Stocker Channel Catfish to Large Market Size in Single-Batch Culture

    Catfish farmers increasingly are producing fish larger than the traditional size of 0.45-0.57 kg/fish in order to meet processing plant requirements for larger fish. Production of larger channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus in multiple-batch culture has been investigated in a few studies, but the impact of understocked fingerlings on growth of carry-over fish is unknown. The present study was conducted to quantify growth, feed conversion ratio, net daily yield, and net and total yield of stocker channel catfish grown in single-batch, one-season culture to mean individual weights of 0.60, 0.72, 0.91, or 1.17 kg/fish. Channel catfish (mean weight = 0.26 kg/fish) were stocked into 12 0.1-ha ponds at 11,115 fish/ha. Fish were fed a 32% crude protein floating extruded feed once daily to apparent satiation. When the average weight of the fish population reached the target weight, three randomly selected ponds were harvested. Fish growth was linear in all treatments. Growth rates were similar for fish grown to 0.60, 0.72, and 0.91 kg/fish, and significantly lower (P < 0.05) than for fish grown to 1.17 kg. Variation in individual fish weight increased linearly with increased duration of culture period. Feed conversion ratio averaged 1.9 and did not differ significantly among treatments. The percentage of the fish population at harvest that fell within the 0.57 to 2.04 kg-size range preferred by processing plants increased from 56.6 to 98-5% as the mean weight at harvest increased from 0.60 to 1.17 kg/fish.     Performance of Juvenile Coho Salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch Fed Diets Containing Meals from Fish Wastes, Deboned Fish Wastes, or Skin-and-Bone By-Product as the Protein Ingredient

    The suitability of meals derived from fish processing wastes as the protein fraction in practical diets for hatchery-reared coho salmon was investigated. The study compared the performance of coho salmon fed diets containing three products: a skin-and-bone meal (SB), a deboned meal (DM), and a whole-fish meal (WM) made directly from the fish wastes. A commercial trout diet (CO) was fed to a fourth treatment group. Diets were fed at 3% of body weight per day to juvenile coho salmon for 12 wk. Survival (> 94%) was not significantly different among treatment groups. Average fish weight, feed conversion ratio, whole body proximate and mineral composition, and protein and phosphorus retention were compared. There were no significant differences after 12 wk of feeding in fish weight between WM, DM, and CO, but SB had significantly lower weight and whole body lipid, and significantly higher ash. Compared to WM, DM had a significantly lower feed conversion ratio and higher retention of protein and phosphorus, but these indices were not significantly different from CO. It is concluded that DM is a potentially superior protein ingredient compared to WM, while specific characteristics of SB will limit its use as a protein source in feeds for salmonids. However, SB may prove to be a suitable mineral supplement when added at a low level. Utilization of fish processing wastes in salmonid diets could be a commercially viable alternative to direct disposal of processing wastes. [source]


    Optimization of flaxseed oil feeding time length in adult Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) as a function of muscle omega-3 fatty acids composition

    Abstract This study evaluated the omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids and the proximate composition of muscle tissue of adult Nile tilapias to select the best feeding time length with a diet containing 70 (g kg,1 wt) flaxseed oil (FO). The results showed that dietary complementation with FO for 45 days is suitable for obtaining high levels of protein (164 g kg,1), total lipids (94 g kg,1), and ash (18 g kg,1). Furthermore, there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in the reduction of n-6 and an increase in the concentration of n-3. With 45 days' time of FO feeding, fish weight was 532 g and it was improved by the incorporation of total n-3 (9.8%), consisting of alpha-linolenic acid (LNA; 6.3%), and n-3 very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 VLC-PUFA; 3.5%), and including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 1.2%). This gave a better n-6/n-3 ratio (1.1) of muscle tissue, a more desirable ratio than the present ratio sometimes as high as 1 : 20 in human diets. The concentrations of n-3 VLC-PUFA were higher than those of native Brazilian freshwater fish. Thus, 45 days is the shortest time period required for the inclusion of FO oil in tilapia feed to raise the nutritional value of adult Nile tilapia. [source]


    Effect of feed restriction on the growth performance of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) juveniles under commercial rearing conditions

    Abstract Two trials were performed to study the effect of periodic feed deprivation (trial 1) or feed restriction, followed by satiation feeding (trial 2) on the growth performance of turbot juveniles under commercial rearing conditions. In trial 1, duplicate groups of 350 fish with an initial weight of 62 g were fed a commercial diet to apparent visual satiation for 7, 6, 5 or 4 days a week for 83 days. At the end of the trial, fish weight was directly related to the number of feeding days but feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio were not affected by treatments. At the end of the trial, there were no differences in whole-body composition among groups. In trial 2, duplicate groups of 500 fish with an initial weight of 33 g were fed a commercial diet to satiation (100%) or feed restricted to 90%, 80% and 70% of satiation for 90 days. Thereafter, all groups were fed to satiation for 34 days. During the feed restriction period, growth was directly related to feed intake, while during the satiation feeding period, it was inversely related to the previous feeding level. At the end of the trial, the final weight was not different among groups. At the end of the feed restriction period, whole-body lipid content showed a trend to decrease with an increase in the feed restriction level. The results of this study indicate that under practical conditions, turbot juveniles should be fed daily as even cycles of short periods of feed deprivation negatively affect growth, while not improving feed efficiency. On the contrary, even after a relatively long feed restriction period, fish shows compensatory growth, and this may be used as a feed management strategy for controlling fish production in commercial farms.     Potential of local agricultural by-products for the rearing of African catfish Clarias gariepinus in Rwanda: effects on growth, feed utilization and body composition

    Abstract This study was performed to evaluate the effect of replacing fish meal with local by-products on Clarias gariepinus growth performance, feed utilization and body composition. A control diet contained 50% of fish meal. In four other diets, fish meal was partially replaced by vegetable and animal protein blend composed of sunflower oil cake, soybean oil cake, groundnut oil cake, bean meal, chicken viscera and blood meal. The study was conducted in a recirculating water system at a mean temperature of 23.6°C. The five test diets were compared with a commercial diet developed for African catfish. All diets were balanced to be equal in gross energy (19 kJ g,1) and crude protein (40%). The experimental groups were fed in triplicate for 8 weeks, increasing fish weight from about 6.2 g at start to 52.3 g in the end. Best specific growth rate (SGR=3.4), feed efficiency (FE=1.3) and protein efficiency ratio (PER=3) were obtained with the control diet (diet 50% fish meal), although there were no significant differences between the group of fish fed the control diet and those fed diets based on groundnut oil cake or bean meal, whereas SGR (2.17), FE (0.85) and PER (1.95) were significantly (P<0.01) lower in fish fed diet containing sunflower oil cake. No significant differences (P<0.05) were found in fish fed commercial diet and diets containing bean meal or groundnut oil cake. Groundnut oil cake or bean meal can thus replace at least 50% of fish meal in the diet of Clarias fingerlings without amino acid supplementation. Because of its economic importance and its potential in animal nutrition sunflower oil cake is still an interesting feed ingredient, but its efficiency should be improved by various processing techniques. African catfish can utilize efficiently a diet with low percentage of animal protein without growth reduction. [source]


    Biochemical responses of matrinxăBrycon cephalus (Günther, 1869) after sustained swimming

    Abstract Juvenile matrinxă, Brycon cephalus, were submitted to sustained swimming for 72 days at 1.0 body length s,1. Exercised fish (EF) grew more than non-EF and their feed conversion ratio (FCR) improved; haematological responses demonstrated a decrease in haemoglobin and mean cell haemoglobin contents and increase in the mean cell volume. In the plasma, sodium, ammonia and amino acid concentrations increased; plasma triglycerides decreased while free fatty acids increased. Liver glucose, free amino acids, ammonia, the rate protein per fish weight and total lipid content increased, while the glycogen per fish ratio declined. Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity increased while pyruvate kinase (PK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) decreased. White muscle glucose, lactate, the glycogen per fish-weight ratio and total lipid content exhibited a decrease in their values; ammonia, free amino acids and the protein per fish-weight ratio increased. GDH and PK decreased their activities. In the red muscle glycogen store, the glycogen per fish-weight ratio and glucose were reduced. Juvenile matrinxăs, under sustained swimming, were physiologically and biochemically adapted to exercise as indicated by improved blood flow, transport and oxygen uptake, FCR, amino acid and protein incorporation and growth. Continuous exercise is a good practice for B. cephalus cultivation. [source]


    Estimating digestible protein requirements of silver perch, Bidyanus bidyanus Mitchell

    Abstract In this study, we estimated requirements for digestible protein, using intact protein sources, at one digestible energy content. Using digestibility data for silver perch (Bidyanus bidyanus Mitchell) for a large number of ingredients, we formulated a ,summit' diet to contain between 1.4 and 1.8 times the ,expected requirements' for digestible essential amino acids (based on requirements for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus Rafinesque). A ,diluent' diet was formulated to contain 0.4,0.5 times the expected requirements of digestible essential amino acids. Both ,summit' and ,diluent' diets contained similar digestible energy (14.7 MJ digestible energy kg,1 for the summit and 13.4 MJ digestible energy kg,1 for the diluent). Six diets were prepared with the following amounts of summit,diluent diets: 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80 and 0:100. A practical diet widely used by commercial farmers was also included as a control. Ten juvenile fish (2.1,2.6 g) were stocked into each experimental 70-L acrylic aquarium, and each dietary treatment was randomly assigned to five replicate aquaria. Fish were fed twice daily to apparent satiation for 54 days. Final individual fish weight ranged from 4,15.5 g. Results were analysed using intersecting linear regression analysis. The optimum digestible dietary protein for diets with 13.4,14.7 MJ digestible energy kg,1, after which protein deposition did not increase significantly, was 28%. Although this study did not determine requirements for individual amino acids, for diets with the digestible energy content used here, requirements for individual amino acids obviously did not exceed the content in the 28% protein diet. These contents are useful as an estimate of ,recommended levels' for silver perch diets with 13.4,14.7 MJ digestible energy kg,1. The proximate composition of fish was affected by diet. Whole body protein and moisture increased, whereas lipid content decreased with increasing dietary protein content (and increasing protein,energy ratio and decreasing lipid). Fish size was also affected by diet; however, the changes in whole carcass proximate composition also occurred for fish fed diets 60:40, 80:20 and the summit diet which were a similar final weight.     Effect of Multiple-batch Channel Catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, Stocking Density and Feeding Rate on Water Quality, Production Characteristics, and Costs

    To quantitatively define relationships among stocking densities, feeding rates, water quality, and production costs for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, grown in multiple-batch systems, twelve 0.1-ha earthen ponds were stocked at 8,600, 17,300, 26,000, or 34,600 fingerlings/ha along with 2,268 kg/ha of carryover fish. Fish in all ponds were fed daily to apparent satiation using 32% protein floating feed. Temperature and dissolved oxygen in each pond were monitored twice daily; pH weekly; nitrite-N, total ammonia nitrogen, and Secchi disk visibility every 2 wk; nitrate-N, chlorophyll a, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand monthly; and chloride every other month. The costs of producing channel catfish at different stocking densities were estimated. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) as a result of stocking density among treatment means of (1) gross or net yields, (2) mean weights at harvest, and (3) growth or survival of fingerlings (24,36%) and carryover fish (77,94%). Mean and maximum daily feeding rates ranged from 40 to 53 kg/ha/d and 123 to 188 kg/ha/d, respectively, and feed conversion ratios averaged 1.75. There were no differences in any feed-related parameter as a result of density. Water quality variables showed few differences among densities at samplings and no differences when averaged across the production season. Yield of fingerlings increased as stocking density increased with significant differences between the two highest and the two lowest stocking densities. Breakeven prices were lower at the higher stocking densities as a result of the higher yield of understocked fish and similar mean individual fish weights produced at these higher stocking densities. Overall, varying stocking densities of fingerlings in multiple-batch systems had little effect on production efficiency and water quality. Additional research on managing the population structure of carryover fish in commercial catfish ponds may be warranted. [source]
