Small-angle X-ray scattering study of intramuscular fish bone: collagen fibril superstructure determined from equidistant meridional reflections

New insights into the bone collagen fibril superstructure have been obtained by novel small-angle X-ray scattering analysis. The analysis was carried out on the small-angle equidistant meridional reflections resulting from the periodic structure of collagen fibrils in their axial direction. Conventional two-dimensional analysis is difficult because of the large discrepancy of longitudinal and lateral length scales for individual fibrils, as well as their preferred orientation. The new approach represents an unapproximated analysis of the equidistant meridional reflections, which takes the exact separation of preferred orientation and fibril size effects into account. The analytical results (e.g. axial period, fibril diameter etc.) agree well with the parameters obtained from transmission electron microscopy. [source]


Effects of Parasite Attributes and Injected Current Parameters on Electromagnetic Detection of Parasites in Fish Muscle

ABSTRACT: We examined the potential of an electromagnetic parasite detection technique to become the basis of an automated commercial system. The effects of parasite orientation and position, presence offish bone, and applied signal strength and frequency on resultant magnetic field strength were determined by scanning a conducting cell containing fish fillet and parasite below a SQUID magnetometer. The parasite orientation affected peak-to-peak voltage of the magnetic dipole. The parasite position with respect to myotome structure seemed to affect the orientation of the dipolar signal. Foreign body granuloma in the submental region due to fish bone: a case report

Abstract The purpose of this article was to describe the clinical and microscopic features of a foreign-body granuloma in submental region that resulted from a fish bone embedded in the floor of mouth. A 45-year-old female patient complained of a hard mass in submental region. Clinical examination showed a non-compressible, firm, fixed lump, painless on palpation. Ultrasound examination showed an internally uneven, uncircumscribed, hypoechoic mass with a steaky hyperechoic spot of 1.1 cm length in the center. A microscopic examination showed newly-formed granuloma, composed of lympocytes and epithelioid cells, and some microabscess with neurophiles. The final diagnosis was a foreign-body granuloma with fish bone. Even though foreign-body granulomas in submental region are rare lesions, surgeon should be familiar with their features and include them in the differential diagnosis of tissue masses. [source]


A fish bone embedded in the mobile tongue mimicking a neoplasm

Abstract Foreign bodies embedded in a mobile tongue as an enlarged tongue mass are rarely presented to either a laryngologist or a dentist, because such bodies are commonly lodged superficially and are easily removed by the patients themselves or removed by a laryngologist by means of indirect laryngoscope or endoscope. We have described a 63-year-old female with an 8-month history of an enlarged mass in the anterior right tongue. Physical examination demonstrated a mass located in the anterior right tongue without clear margin, with superficially intact mucosa and normal colour. A benign tongue neoplasm was first considered. However, a fish bone totally embedded in the mobile tongue with granuloma formation was encountered during the incisional biopsy operation. Complete removal of the foreign body with granuloma was achieved under general anaesthesia. There was no neuromuscular or neurosensory dysfunction of the tongue in the follow-up period of 2 years. Although an embedded foreign body in the mobile tongue is a rare condition, it should be considered in the work-up of a patient with an enlarged tongue mass, with or without a history of swallowing a foreign body. Eolian processes, ground cover, and the archaeology of coastal dunes: A taphonomic case study from San Miguel Island, California, U.S.A.

Geomorphological evidence and historical wind records indicate that eolian processes have heavily influenced San Miguel Island environments for much of the Late Quaternary. The island is almost constantly bombarded by prevailing northwesterly winds, with peak velocities exceeding 75 km/h and wind gusts reaching over 100 km/h. These strong winds played an important role in the location, formation, and preservation of the island's more than 600 archaeological sites. Excavation and surface collection at a stratified Middle and Late Holocene archaeological site on the island's north coast suggest that wind related disturbances result in significant displacement of light fish bones, produce concentrations of shellfish and heavy mammal bones, and cause significant abrasion, etching, and polishing of bones, shells, and artifacts. These data illustrate that wind not only alters surface materials but can significantly disturb subsurface deposits to a depth of at least 20 cm. Working in concert with a variety of taphonomic processes, wind can play a fundamental role in the preservation of archaeological sites and careful scrutiny during excavation and laboratory analysis is required to delineate its effects. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The use of size,frequency diagrams to characterize prehistoric fish catches and to assess human impact on inshore fisheries

Abstract Archaeological collections of fish bones from previously excavated sites in New Zealand are being re-examined and selected bones measured in order to estimate original fish size, reconstruct prehistoric fish catches and assess human impact on the fishery over the course of about 800 years of New Zealand prehistory. Several problems hamper this research, such as small sample sizes, lack of significant stratigraphy at many sites, inconsistent field collection strategies and failure to retain all of the material after initial analysis. Although some common fish species show a significant decline in mean size between pre-European and early historic samples on the one hand, and modern populations on the other, we have found little support for the common belief that there was a decline in mean fish size during the pre-European period. We have observed increases over time in the mean size of snapper (Pagrus auratus), blue cod (Parapercis colias) and undifferentiated species of Labridae from several sites scattered throughout New Zealand. Distinguishing between changes in fish population structures owing to natural processes, such as surface sea water changes, and those which are the result of human over-fishing is not simple, because both processes can operate simultaneously. We draw on modern fish quota management models to separate these processes. Important factors for each species are inshore biomass and the recruitment rate at different temperature regimes. In the case of blue cod, we find that there are signs in the catch diagrams of changes in fishing technology, and that 30,80% of catches are undersized fish in terms of modern management criteria. Did ciguatera prompt the late Holocene Polynesian voyages of discovery?

Abstract The famous Polynesian voyages characterized an intensive network of cultural exchange and colonization that was particularly active from ad 1000 to 1450. But, why would large groups of people leave their homelands to voyage into the unknown? Oceanic voyages are risky, albeit less so today than in the past. Landfalls were not guaranteed improvements over ports of departure. Taking the Cook Islands as an example, we ask whether harmful algal blooms that result in ciguatera fish poisoning in humans prompted past and present emigration pulses of peoples from within Polynesia. We take a multipronged approach to examine our hypothesis, involving: (1) archaeological evidence, (2) ciguatera fish poisoning reports since the 1940s, and (3) climate and temperature oscillations using palaeodatasets. The archaeological records of fish bones and hooks show abrupt changes in fishing practices in post- ad 1450 records. Sudden dietary shifts are not linked to overfishing, but may be a sign of ciguatera fish poisoning and adjustment of fishing preference. While fishes form the staple diet of Polynesians, such poisoning renders fishes unusable. We show that ciguatera fish poisoning events coincide with Pacific Decadal Oscillations and suggest that the celebrated Polynesian voyages across the Pacific Ocean may not have been random episodes of discovery to colonize new lands, but rather voyages of necessity. A modern analogue (in the 1990s) was the shift towards processed foods in the Cook Islands during ciguatera fish poisoning events, and mass emigration of islanders to New Zealand and Australia. Phosphorus requirement of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L) based on growth and mineralization

Abstract The effect of diets supplemented with varied levels of inorganic phosphorus (P) (NaH2PO4) on the growth, body composition, nutrient digestibility and mineralization in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L) was evaluated to determine the optimum P requirements. The six diets used were DPO, as the basal diet with a total P content of 1.30 g kg,1, and DP1, DP2, DP3, DP4 and DP5, which contained 4.10, 6.70, 11.6, 14.9 and 23.4 g P kg,1 respectively. Weight gain, SGR, apparent digestibility coefficient of organic matter and P, whole body ash, P, Ca and Mg increased significantly with increasing dietary P levels while dry matter (DM), fat and Zn content decreased. Feed conversion ratio was the poorest (P<0.05) in fish fed DPO, suggesting P deficiency. The apparent digestibility coefficient of P was 18% in the DPO-fed group, which increased from 69% in DP1 to 92% in DP5 after P supplementation, revealing lower digestibility of the native P than that in NaH2PO4. Broken-line analyses based on weight gain, P content of fish bones and whole body against total dietary and digestible P (data in brackets) contents showed the optimum P requirement for the growth of common carp to be 6.87 (5.55) g kg,1 DM, and the requirement for optimum mineralization in bones and whole body to be 9.10 (7.62) and 14.7 (13.2) g kg,1.
