    Sound production in two carapids (Carapus acus and C. mourlani) and through the sea cucumber tegument

Sound production in two carapids (Carapus acus and C. mourlani) and throught the sea cucumber teguments. ,Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 87: 113,119 Carapus acus and Carapus mourlani are able to live inside sea cucumbers and sea stars respectively. Unlike other carapids whose sounds have been recorded (C. boraborensis, C. homei and Encheliophis gracilis), these two species have a central constriction in their swimbladder and are unlikely to encounter heterospecific carapids within their hosts. We evoked sound production in Carapus acus and Carapus mourlani by adding several individuals to a tank with a single host and found that their sounds differ substantially from the sounds emitted by other carapids in pulse length, peak frequency and sharpness of tuning (Q3 dB). Unlike the other carapids, C. mourlani and C. acus produce shorter and less repetitive sounds and do not produce sounds when they enter their host. Since sounds produced within a sea cucumber have the potential to be heard by distant carapids and are typically recorded outside the sea cucumber, we examined the effect of the sea cucumber tegument on acoustic transmission. Attenuation by the tegument was negligible at the frequencies within carapid sounds. Therefore, carapids have the potential to call from the relative safety of a sea cucumber without sacrificing the distance over which their transmissions are heard. [source]

    Fine scale spatial pattern of Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) and northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) eggs

    Abstract Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) and northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) eggs exhibited different spatial structure on the scale of 0.75,2.5 km in two egg patches sampled in the Southern California Bight in April 2000. Plankton samples were collected at 4-min intervals with a Continuous Underway Fish Egg Sampler (CUFES) on 5 × 5 km grids centered on surface drifters. Variograms were calculated for sardine and anchovy eggs in Lagrangian coordinates, using abundances of individual developmental stages grouped into daily cohorts. Model variograms for sardine eggs have a low nugget effect, about 10% of the total variance, indicating high autocorrelation between adjacent samples. In contrast, model variograms for anchovy eggs have a high nugget effect of 50,100%, indicating that most of the variance at the scales sampled is spatially unstructured. The difference between observed spatial patterns of sardine and anchovy eggs on this scale may reflect the behavior of the spawning adults: larger, faster, more abundant fish may organize into larger schools with greater structure and mobility that create smoother egg distributions. Size and mobility vary with population size in clupeoids. The current high abundance of sardines and low abundance of anchovy off California agree with the greater autocorrelation of sardine egg samples and the observed tendency for locations of anchovy spawning to be more persistent on the temporal scale of days to weeks. Thus the spatial pattern of eggs and the persistence of spawning areas are suggested to depend on species, population size and age structure, spawning intensity and characteristic physical scales of the spawning habitat.     BDNF variability in opioid addicts and response to methadone treatment: preliminary findings

    Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling pathways have been shown to be essential for opioid-induced plasticity. We conducted an exploratory study to evaluate BDNF variability in opioid addict responders and nonresponders to methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). We analyzed 21 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the BDNF genomic region. Responders and nonresponders were classified by means of illicit opioid consumption detected in random urinalysis. Patients were assessed by a structured interview (Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental Disorders (PRISM)-DSM-IV) and personality was evaluated by the Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory. No clinical, environmental and treatment characteristics were different between the groups, except for the Cooperativeness dimension (P < 0.001). Haplotype block analysis showed a low-frequency (2.7%) haplotype (13 SNPs) in block 1, which was more frequent in the nonresponder group than in the responder group (4/42 vs. 1/135; Pcorrected = 0.023). Fine mapping in block 1 allows us to identify a haplotype subset formed by only six SNPs (rs7127507, rs1967554, rs11030118, rs988748, rs2030324 and rs11030119) associated with differential response to MMT (global P sim = 0.011). Carriers of the CCGCCG haplotype had an increased risk of poorer response, even after adjusting for Cooperativeness score (OR = 20.25 95% CI 1.46,280.50, P = 0.025). These preliminary results might suggest the involvement of BDNF as a factor to be taken into account in the response to MMT independently of personality traits, environmental cues, methadone dosage and psychiatric comorbidity.     Stratigraphy of upper Viséan carbonate platform rocks in the Carlow area, southeast Ireland

    Abstract The stratigraphy of the upper Viséan (Asbian to Brigantian) carbonate succession in southeast Ireland is revised on the basis of seven quarry and two borehole sections. Six lithological units have been distinguished, two units (units 1 and 2) in the upper Asbian Ballyadams Formation, and four units (units 4 to 6) in the Brigantian Clogrenan Formation (both formations are dated precisely using foraminiferans, calcareous algae and rugose corals). The boundary between the Ballyadams and Clogrenan formations is redefined 19,m below the horizon proposed by the Geological Survey of Ireland, and thus, lithological characteristics of both formations are redescribed. The upper part of the Ballyadams Formation is characterized by well-developed large-scale cyclicity, with common subaerial exposure surfaces. Fine- to medium-grained thin-bedded limestones with thin shales occur in the lower part of cycles, passing up into medium-grained pale grey massive limestones in the upper part. The Clogrenan Formation is composed mainly of medium- to coarse-grained thick limestone beds with variable presence of shales; but no large-scale cyclicity. There is a decrease in the number of subaerial exposure surfaces towards the top of the formation and common chert nodules; macrofauna occurs mostly concentrated in bands. The six units recognized in the Carlow area are comparable with other units described for the same time interval (Asbian,Brigantian) from south and southwest Ireland, demonstrating the existence of a stable platform for most parts of southern Ireland, controlled principally by glacioeustatics.     Quantitative two-dimensional analysis of facial wrinkles of Japanese women at various ages

    Synopsis To evaluate individual differences in the recognition of facial wrinkles, we asked 40 Japanese female observers to identify wrinkles using transparent sheets over frontal facial photos of four females aged 20, 39, 55 or 75 years. We then measured the number and length of those wrinkles by image analysis. Wrinkles identified by those 40 observers showed aged-related increases in the standard deviation (SD) values for number and length but age-related decreases in the coefficient of variation (CV)%. Therefore, to clarify factors affecting the degree of wrinkle detection, wrinkles were identified by two groups of age-matched male and female observers, by two groups that differed by age, and by two other groups, one of which who felt that there was an improvement in their wrinkles after application of an antiwrinkle agent and another group who did not feel that there was any improvement after the same treatment. Improvement was observed by replica image analysis in all groups. The degree of wrinkles identified was not affected by the age or by the sex of the observer group. However, the group who felt that there was an improvement in their wrinkles after treatment with the antiwrinkle agent identified a significantly higher number of wrinkles than did the group who did not feel that there was an improvement. These results suggest marked individual differences in the recognition of wrinkles. Fine wrinkles in relatively young subjects are difficult to detect, but moderate to marked wrinkles in middle-aged and in aged subjects can easily be detected. Concerning the cause of individual differences in the extent of wrinkle detection, observers who identified a large number of wrinkles tended to recognize not only pronounced wrinkles but also recognized fine wrinkles as ,wrinkles'. This seems to have also affected their feelings about the success of treatment with the antiwrinkle agent. Résumé Pour pouvoir évaluer les différences individuelles dans la l'identification des rides faciale, nous avons demandéà 40 femmes japonaises d'identifier des rides en utilisant des feuilles transparentes sur des photos faciales frontales de quatre femmes, âgées respectivement de 20, 39, 55 et 75 ans. Nous avons alors mesuré le nombre et la longueur de ces rides par analyse d'images. Les rides identifiées par ces 40 femmes montraient que le vieillissement qui s'y rattachait augmentait selon les valeurs d'un écart standard (ES) pour le nombre et la longueur, mais que le vieillissement qui s'y rattachait diminuait dans le pourcentage du coefficient de variation. Par conséquent, pour clarifier les facteurs affectant le degré de détection des rides, ces dernières furent identifiées par deux groupes d'hommes et de femmes dont l'âge coïncidait, âgés de 26,6 ans et de 44,5 ans, et par deux autres groupes. Un groupe qui a estimé qu'il y avait eu une amélioration dans les rides après une application de 6 semaines d'un agent antirides aux coins des yeux et un autre groupe qui a considéré qu'après le même traitement il n'y avait pas eu d'amélioration. Une amélioration fut remarquée par la copie d'une analyse d'images dans tous les groupes. Le degré d'importance des rides identifiées n'était pas affecté par l'âge ou le sexe des groupes étudiés. Cependant, le groupe qui a estimé qu'il y avait eu une amélioration concernant leurs rides après un traitement avec un agent antirides a identifié un nombre significativement plus élevé de rides que le groupe qui estimait qu'il n'y avait pas eu d'amélioration. Ces résultats suggèrent des différences individuelles notoires dans l'identification de rides. De minces rides dans les groupes relativement jeunes sont difficiles à déceler. Mais des rides modérées remarquées dans les groupes de personnes d'un,ge moyen et, âgées peuvent être facilement localisées. Concernant la cause de ces différences individuelles dans l'importance d'un décèlement des rides, les sujets qui identifièrent un grand nombre de rides avaient tendance à ne pas prononcer le mot ,rides', mais trouvaient que de fines rides n'étaient que des ,rides'. Cela semblait aussi affecter leurs sentiments après le succès du traitement avec des agents antirides. [source]


    Lichenoid photodermatitis associated with nimesulide

    An 81-year-old-female patient presented with a 2 week history of erythematous to violaceous lichenoid papules and plaques exhibiting a reticulated pattern on the ,,V'' area of the chest and dorsal hands. Fine, whitish reticulated networks were present over the surface of many well developed papules. The lesions were sharply demarcated and moderately pruritic (Fig. 1). Figure 1. ,Violaceous lichenoid papules with reticular pattern located on the ,,V'' area of the chest The result of routine complete blood cell count, urinalysis, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, liver and kidney function tests were within normal limits. Antinuclear and anti-DNA antibodies were negative, and total C3 and C4 complement levels were normal. Hepatitis B surface antigen, anti-Hepatitis B surface antigen, anti-Hepatitis B core IgM antibody were negative, while anti-Hepatitis C virus antibody was positive. A skin biopsy specimen obtained from the neck of our patient revealed an interface lichenoid dermatitis accompanied by individual necrotic epidermal keratinocytes, parakeratosis and eosinophils in the infiltrate (Fig. 2).     Tracking reflections through cryogenic cooling with topography

    The mosaic structure of a single protein crystal was analyzed by reflection profiling and topography using highly parallel and monochromatic synchrotron radiation. Fine-,-sliced diffraction images (0.002° stills) were collected using a conventional large-area CCD detector in order to calculate reflection profiles. Fine-,-sliced topographic data (0.002°) stills were collected with a digital topography system for three reflections in a region where the Lorentz effect was minimized. At room temperature, several different mosaic domains were clearly visible within the crystal. Without altering the crystal orientation, the crystal was cryogenically frozen (cryocooled) and the experiment was repeated for the same three reflections. Topographs at cryogenic temperatures reveal a significantly increased mosaicity, while the original domain structure is maintained. A model for the observed changes during cryocooling is presented.     Wet chemical synthesis of low bulk density aluminium hydroxide powder

    Abstract Fine, low bulk density aluminium hydroxide powdered gel was prepared by the mild base hydrolysis of an aqueous solution of aluminium sulfate with hydrazine hydrate. Parameters such as method of addition of reactant, initial concentration of Al3+, mole ratio, final pH and hydrolysis temperature have a profound effect on the lightness and particle size of the powder. Optimized conditions showed that the final pH, Al3+ concentration and method of addition of reactant have a major contribution on the formation of lighter grade powder. Experiments conducted using other bases also produced lighter particles under similar conditions. Deviation from the optimized conditions led to formation of a higher bulk density product.     Fine scale genetic population structure of the freshwater and Omono types of nine-spined stickleback Pungitius pungitius (L.) within the Omono River system, Japan

    The fine scale geographic population structure of two types of nine-spined stickleback Pungitius pungitius (the widely distributed freshwater type and a local endemic, the Omono type) within the Omono River system, Japan, was investigated. A principal components analysis of allele frequencies and neighbour-joining tree for pair-wise FST values, based on 10 allozyme loci, revealed that the Omono type was comprised of four regional groups with relatively high genetic divergence. This grouping was also supported by hierarchical analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) with a higher variance component among the regional groups, and by an exact test with significant genotypic differentiation for all sample pairs among the regional groups. Moreover, in the clustering of individuals using the Bayesian method, most of individuals in each regional group were assigned the corresponding cluster. On the other hand, there were less pronounced regional groups of the freshwater type, although AMOVA, exact test for genotypic differentiation and Bayesian analysis indicated genetic divergence between two sampling sites in lower reach of the Omono River and other sites. The results suggest that the Omono type represented an earlier colonization, with subsequent invasion of the freshwater type. [source]


    Physical properties and compatibility with dental stones of current alginate impression materials

    summary, This study examined physical properties and compatibility with dental stones of two types of alginate impression materials. Five powder-type alginate impression materials (Alginoplast EM, Aroma Fine, Algiace Z, Coe Alginate, Jeltrate Plus) and a paste-type alginate impression material (Tokuso AP-1) were used. The dynamic viscosity immediately after mixing was measured by means of a controlled-stress rheometer. The gelation times were determined according to Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) T6505, and recovery from deformation, strain in compression and compressive strength were determined according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) specification 1563. Detail reproduction and surface roughness of type III dental stones (New Plastone, New Sunstone) and a type IV dental stone (Die Stone) were evaluated using a ruled test block as specified in the ISO specification 1563 and a profilometer, respectively. The alginate impression materials evaluated in this study were all in compliance with the ISO specification 1563 and JIS T6505. The alginate impression materials had similar mechanical properties after gelation, whilst a wide range of dynamic viscosity immediately after being mixed, gelation times and compatibility with dental stones were found among the materials. The paste-type material had a higher dynamic viscosity and a shorter gelation time than the powder-type materials. The best surface quality was obtained with the paste-type material/type III dental stone cast combinations. The materials should be selected in consideration of initial flow, setting characteristics and compatibility with dental stones. The results suggested that a paste-type material would better meet the requirements of an alginate impression material. [source]

    Abstract Fractal geometry concerns the study of non-Euclidean geometrical figures generated by a recursive sequence of mathematical operations. The proposed 2D-fractal approach was applied to characterise the image structure and texture generated by fine and ultrafine particles when impacting on a flat surface. The work was developed with reference to particles usually produced in the ornamental stone sector during the different working phases carried out in dry conditions. Specific milling actions have been performed at a laboratoty scale on different ornamental stone products, in order to generate different particle populations to utilize in the study. The aim of the work was to develop a simple, reliable and low cost analytical set of procedures with the ability to establish correlations between particles detected by fractal characteristics and their classical attributes, e.g., i) size class distribution, ii) shape, iii) composition, etc. Such a logic should constitute the core of a control engine with the ability to optimize dust capture abatement strategies, according to produced dusts characteristics.     The distinction between the essential and the accidental is nearly always understood in modal terms. After criticizing some recent writings by Kit Fine that question that understanding, I develop a theory according to which whether a given feature of a thing is essential turns on whether it is explained by other features of that thing. The theory differs from the modal view by leaving room for features that are accidental even though their bearers cannot exist without them. The theory has the additional advantage of being open to the results of scientific theory. [source]


    Fine structure of Eimer's organ in the coast mole (Scapanus orarius)

    Abstract Eimer's organ is a small, densely innervated sensory structure found on the glabrous rhinarium of most talpid moles. This structure consists of an epidermal papilla containing a central circular column of cells associated with intraepidermal free nerve endings, Merkel cell neurite complexes, and lamellated corpuscles. The free nerve endings within the central cell column form a ring invested in the margins of the column, surrounding 1,2 fibers that pass through the center of the column. A group of small-diameter nociceptive free nerve endings that are immunoreactive for substance P surrounds this central ring of larger-diameter free nerve endings. Transmission electron microscopy revealed a high concentration of tonofibrils in the epidermal cells of the central column, suggesting they are more rigid than the surrounding keratinocytes and may play a mechanical role in transducing stimuli to the different receptor terminals. The intraepidermal free nerve endings within the central column begin to degrade 15 ,m from the base of the stratum corneum and do not appear to be active within the keratinized outer layer. The peripheral free nerve endings are structurally distinct from their counterparts in the central column and immunocytochemical double labeling with myelin basic protein and substance P indicates these afferents are unmyelinated.     Divergence of Fine and Gross Motor Skills in Prelingually Deaf Children: Implications for Cochlear Implantation,

    Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to assess relations between fine and gross motor development and spoken language processing skills in pediatric cochlear implant users. Study Design: The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of longitudinal data. Methods: Prelingually deaf children who received a cochlear implant before age 5 and had no known developmental delay or cognitive impairment were included in the study. Fine and gross motor development were assessed before implantation using the Vineland Adaptive Behavioral Scales, a standardized parental report of adaptive behavior. Fine and gross motor scores reflected a given child's motor functioning with respect to a normative sample of typically developing, normal-hearing children. Relations between these preimplant scores and postimplant spoken language outcomes were assessed. Results: In general, gross motor scores were found to be positively related to chronologic age, whereas the opposite trend was observed for fine motor scores. Fine motor scores were more strongly correlated with postimplant expressive and receptive language scores than gross motor scores. Conclusions: Our findings suggest a disassociation between fine and gross motor development in prelingually deaf children: fine motor skills, in contrast to gross motor skills, tend to be delayed as the prelingually deaf children get older. These findings provide new knowledge about the links between motor and spoken language development and suggest that auditory deprivation may lead to atypical development of certain motor and language skills that share common cortical processing resources.     Fine mapping a quantitative trait locus on horse chromosome 2 associated with radiological signs of navicular disease in Hanoverian warmblood horses

    Summary Navicular disease or podotrochlosis is one of the main causes of progressive forelimb lameness in warmblood horses. The objective of this study was to refine a quantitative trait locus on horse chromosome 2 for radiological alterations in the contour of the navicular bone (RAC) in Hanoverian warmblood horses. Genotyping was performed in 192 Hanoverian warmblood horses from 17 paternal half-sib groups. The marker set was extended to 58 informative microsatellites including nine newly developed microsatellites. QTL for RAC could be delineated at 32.50,43.13 Mb and a further new QTL for RAC could be identified at 59.08,65.14 Mb. The markers ABGe342 and ABGe343 reached the highest multipoint Zmean and LOD scores at 34.42 and 35.23 Mb with genome-wide error probabilities of P = 0.013 and P = 0.064. In addition, significant associations of markers and haplotypes within the QTL could be shown. The results support the location of the QTL on ECA2 associated with RAC. This work is a further step towards the development of a marker test for navicular disease in Hanoverian warmblood horses. [source]

    Polymer aids for settling and filtration of oil sands tailings

    Abstract Commercial Magnafloc 1011 (Percol 727) polymer and in-house synthesised Al-PAM polymer were used to flocculate oil sands tailings that were derived from low and high fines oil sands ores. Fines are defined as mineral solids less than 44,µm. The performance of polymers was evaluated in terms of tailings settling, filtration rate, and final moisture content of tilter cakes. Both polymers were shown to effectively flocculate the derived oil sands tailings and hence to enhance tailings settling. Al-PAM performed very well as a filtration aid. The final moisture content of the filter cake obtained from tailings derived from the low fines ore was 6.6,±,1.2,wt.% and that from the high fines ore was 16.9,±,0.8,wt.%. This class of polymer can provide an alternative approach for oil sands tailings disposal that has the potential to eliminate tailings ponds. However, the commercial Magnafloc 1011 polymer was found ineffective as a filtration aid for the two tailings tested in this study. Les matériaux fins sont définis comme des solides minéraux de moins de 44,µm. Le rendement des polymères a été évalué en termes de la décantation des résidus, du taux de filtration et du contenu final en humidité des gâteaux des réservoirs à basculement. Les deux polymères ont démontré leur capacité à floculer efficacement les résidus de sables bitumineux dérivés et donc à améliorer la décantation des résidus. Le polymère Al-PAM a produit de très bons résultats comme aide de filtration. Le contenu final en humidité du gâteau de filtre obtenu à partir des résidus dérivés du minerai à faible concentration de matériaux fins était de 6,6,±,1,2 en % de poids et de 16,9,±,0,8 pour le minerai à forte concentration de matériaux. Cette catégorie de polymères peut offrir une approche alternative pour la mise au rebut des résidus de sables bitumineux, alternative qui aurait le potentiel d'éliminer les bassins de décantation de résidus. Cependant, le polymère commercial Magnafloc s'est prouvé inefficace comme aide de filtration pour les deux résidus testés dans cette étude. [source]


    Haptic-constraint modeling based on interactive metaballs

    Abstract Adding interactive haptic-constraint sensations is important in interactive computer gaming and 3D shape design. Usually constraints are set on vertices of the object to drive the deformation. How to simulate dynamic force constraints in interactive design is still a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a novel haptic-constraint modeling method based on interactive metaballs, during which the haptic-constraint tools are attracted to the target location and then control the touch-enabled deformation within the constrained areas. The interactive force feedbacks facilitate designers to accurately deform the target regions and fine carve the details as their intention on the objects. Our work studies how to apply touch sensation in such constrained deformations using interactive metaballs, thus users can truly feel and control the soft-touch objects during the deforming interactions. Experimental results show that the dynamic sense of touch during the haptic manipulation is intuitively simulated to users, via the interacting interface we have developed.     John Dewey's "Wholly Original Philosophy" and Its Significance for Museums

    He attempted to construct a philosophical system that incorporated life as it is lived, not in some ideal form. He rejected all dualisms, such as those between thought and action, fine and applied arts, or stimulus and response. An analysis of "experience" (defined as almost synonymous with "culture") is central to Dewey's writing and leads him to emphasize process, continuity, and development, rather than static, absolute concepts. This paper examines the significance of Dewey's educational views for museum exhibitions and education programs, and his complex definitions of relevant concepts, with special emphasis on his interpretation of "experience." Dewey's faith in democracy and his moral philosophy require that the value of any educational activity depends on its social consequences as well as its intellectual content, a proposition that is discussed and applied to museums. This argument suggests that exhibitions and programs can strengthen democracy by promoting skills that improve visitors' ability to become critical thinkers and by directly addressing controversial issues, taking the side of social justice and democracy.     Treatment of Facial Telangiectasia With Variable-Pulse High-Fluence Pulsed-Dye Laser: Comparison of Efficacy with Fluences Immediately Above and Below the Purpura Threshold

    Background. Pulsed-dye laser treatment has been shown to be highly effective for the treatment of facial telangiectasia. Posttreatment purpura after such treatment has limited patient acceptance of the procedure. Objective. To determine whether purpura-free treatment with recently introduced variable-pulsed pulsed-dye lasers can effectively reduce facial telangiectasia. Methods. This was a prospective, randomized, controlled, nonblinded trial. Eleven patients received variable-pulse pulsed-dye laser treatment with and without induction of purpura. Telangiectasia were graded on a "telangiectasia density scale," on which a 1 signified extremely fine, sparsely distributed telangiectasia, and 5 referred to thick, ropelike telangiectasia covering the affected area. For each subject, two areas on either side of the facial midline with equivalent telangiectasia density ratings were randomized to the purpura and purpura-free treatment groups, respectively. All treatments used a 7-mm spot size and a 10-ms pulse duration. The fluence associated with the purpura threshold for each patient was determined in test areas. Purpura-free treatment entailed a fluence 1.0 J/cm2 less than the purpura threshold, and purpura-level treatment entailed a fluence 0.5 J/cm2 greater than the threshold. Results. Six weeks after a single purpura-free treatment, mean telangiectasia ratings were reduced from 2.7 to 2.4. Purpura-level treatments resulted in a decrease to 1.4 from the same baseline. Thicker, denser telangiectasia appeared to benefit more from purpura-level treatment (a mean telangiectasia density scale reduction of 1.7) than finer, sparser telangiectasia (a mean reduction of 0.8). In 81% of cases, both investigators and patients rated the side treated with purpura as undergoing a greater reduction in telangiectasia density. Conclusion. Although facial telangiectasia do improve after a single purpura-free treatment with the variable-pulse pulsed-dye laser, they improve more after purpura is induced. Purpura-free and purpura-level treatments may be close to equivalent for treating fine telangiectasia, but purpura-level treatments have a distinct advantage for treating thicker telangiectasia. Significantly, the variable-pulse pulsed-dye laser offers patients the option of effective treatment of some telangiectasia without bruising. [source]


    Primary relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in a cervical smear: A case report

    Abstract Uterine cervix and corpus are rarely the initial site of relapse in leukemia or lymphoma. We report herein a case of uterine cervical relapse with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The patient, a 60-yr-old woman, had a history of ALL that had been in remission for 2 yr after chemotherapy. She presented with a chief complaint of genital bleeding. In a routine cervico-vaginal Papanicolau smear, abundant atypical lymphoid cells with round-to-oval nuclei, scant cytoplasm, and high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratios was observed. The nuclei of these cells had fine and dark chromatin and thickened nuclear membranes, with one or several nucleoli being visible. Biopsy under colposcope was performed, and a diagnosis of relapse of ALL was confirmed. The ongoing genital bleeding presented a problem with clinical management of the patient. It was decided to proceed with hysterectomy to end that problem and thereafter proceed with therapy directed against the leukemia. Our results suggest that in patients with known extrauterine cancer, the presence of malignancy in uterine cellular samples provides information regarding the extent of the neoplasm. Diagn.     The interaction between armouring and particle weathering for eroding landscapes

    Abstract The interaction between particle weathering and surface armouring and its effect on erosion has been investigated. The effect of soil armouring is to decrease sediment transport with time by preferentially stripping away fine particles. On the other hand the effect of weathering, which breaks down the particles in the armour, is generally believed to increase erosion. By extending an existing armouring model, ARMOUR, and using a variety of published weathering mechanisms this interaction has been explored. The model predicts that while this is generally true, in some cases erosion can be decreased by weathering. When the particles generated by weathering were approximately of equal diameter, erosion increased while armouring decreased. When weathering produced very fine particles by spalling, erosion increased and armouring also increased. When weathering produced a range of particles from fine to coarse, the armour layer broke down and erosion decreased relative to the no-weathering case. This latter decrease in erosion was due to the high entrainment of coarser transportable materials from the bed decreasing the sediment transport capacity of the flow. In these studies clear regimes could be identified where erosion was limited by either the energy of the flow alone (i.e. ,transport-limited'), or the rate of weathering (,weathering-limited'); however, for some mechanisms there was an interaction between the two, which we called ,weathering/transport limited'.     A narrow deletion of 7q is common to HCL, and SMZL, but not CLL

    Abstract: To further characterise the genetic background of the two closely related B-lymphocytic malignancies hairy cell leukaemia (HCL), and splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) we have identified characteristic copy number imbalances by comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH). Based on these findings, areas of special interest were fine mapped, and relevant probes constructed for use in interphase-fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) investigations. Thus, using the CGH data from 52 HCL and 61 SMZL patients, we identified the characteristic profiles of copy number imbalances for both diseases. These were a gain of 5q13-31 (19%) and loss of 7q22-q35 (6%) for HCL, and gain of 3q25 (28%), loss of 7q31 (16%), and gain of 12q15 (16%) for SMZL. A partial loss of 7q unsual for low-malignant B-cell diseases was found to be common to the two diseases. This loss was therefore fine mapped with BAC/PAC clones. Fine mapping revealed that in SMZL the minimal lost region covers 11.4 Mb spanning from 7q31.33 to 7q33 located between sequence tagged site (STS)-markers SHGC-3275 and D7S725. This area was distinct from the commonly deleted 7q region of myelodysplastic syndrome/acute myeloid leukaemia (MDS/AML). A FISH probe specific for the 7q region was constructed. Using this probe in an interphase-FISH investigation we showed the minimal lost 7q-region of HCL and SMZL to be one and the same. In one HCL case, this investigation furthermore showed the extent of the deleted region to be below the detection limit of CGH, whereas interphase-FISH screening of 36 chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) cases showed no deletion of the 7q area. In conclusion, we have identified characteristic profiles of copy number imbalances in HCL and SMZL and fine mapped the minimal extent of a commonly lost 7q area of special interest. We hypothesise that this region may contain (a) gene(s) important for the pathology of HCL and SMZL. [source]


    Physical-chemical characteristics and oxidative stability of oil obtained from lyophilized raspberry seed

    Abstract Fresh raspberry (Rubus idaeus), cultivar Willamette, was freeze-dried (lyophilization). A byproduct of lyophilization is "fine dust" of raspberry consisting of finely ground raspberry fruit body and seed. The seeds were separated. The seed oil was isolated and its physical and chemical characteristics were determined. Parameters that characterize the seed and quality of the oil were examined, including fatty acid composition, oxidative stability under different storage conditions, and radical-scavenging activity. The fatty acid composition was determined by GC/FID and the contents of the dominant fatty acids were found as: oleic 16.92%, linoleic 54.95%, and ,-linolenic acid 23.97%. The oxidative stability of the oil was poor. The induction period by Rancimat test at 100,°C was 5.2,h. The radical-scavenging activity is similar to that of resveratrol [1,3-benzenediol 5-(1E -2-4-hydroxy-phenyl-ethyl)]. Although this product is used in the candy industry, it would be far more useful if raspberry oil of satisfactory quality could be extracted. This paper demonstrates that sifted lyophilized seeds can be used for the extraction of oils. This process allows for maximal usage of the byproducts, reduces losses and it increases the development of new products. [source]


    Microstructural Characterization of Lamellar Features in TiAl by FIB Imaging,

    A novel experimental procedure is introduced to determine phase fractions and the distribution of individual phases of TiAl-based two-phase alloys using the focused ion beam (FIB) technique. Two , -titanium aluminide alloys with a fine-grained duplex and a nearly lamellar microstructure are examined. The special FIB-based preparation procedure results in high contrast ion beam-induced images for all investigated alloys and allows to quantify the phase contents easily by automated microstructural analysis. Fine two-phase structures, e.g. lamellar colonies in , -TiAl, can be imaged in high resolution with respect to different phases. To validate the FIB-derived data, we compare them to results obtained with another method to determine phase fractions, electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD). This direct comparison shows that the FIB-based technique generally provides slightly higher ,2 -fractions, and thus helps to overcome the limited lateral resolution near grain boundaries and interfaces associated with the conventional EBSD approach. Our study demonstrates that the FIB-based technique is a simple, fast, and more exact way to determine high resolution microstructural characteristics with respect to different phase constitutions in two-phase TiAl alloys and other such materials with fine, lamellar microstructures.
