Selected AbstractsHomogeneously Dispersed Ceria Nanocatalyst Stabilized with Ordered Mesoporous AluminaADVANCED MATERIALS, Issue 13 2010Quan Yuan Homogeneously dispersed ceria nanocatalyst can be synthesized and stabilized with ordered mesoporous alumina by a one-step sol,gel method. This novel material possesses high thermal stability and exhibits 100% conversion at room temperature for CO oxidation when loaded with Au. This established approach can be expanded to the controlled synthesis and stabilization of other nanocatalysts with wide applications. [source] Surveying Recent Literature on the Arabic and Persian Mirrors for Princes GenreHISTORY COMPASS (ELECTRONIC), Issue 2 2009L. Marlow The study of the medieval Arabic and Persian ,mirror for princes' literatures in many respects resembles that of the similarly abundant literatures produced in Byzantium and the Latin West. In earlier scholarship, the predominant approach was that of the history of ideas, and scholars tended to focus on depictions of the ideal ruler and other aspects of the ,political thought' expressed in the mirror literatures. A secondary area of interest concerned textual transmission within and across these literatures. More recent scholarship has continued to develop and refine these established approaches, and has also developed new directions of research. Notably, several scholars have explored the Sitz im Leben of individual mirrors, and have studied their meaning and significance in the historical settings in and for which they were composed. Certain recent publications have highlighted the flexibility of mirrors, the multiple purposes they often served, the range of perspectives represented by their authors, and the importance of authors' choices of language and genre in shaping the composition and reception of their works. [source] S100A8/A9: A Potential New Diagnostic Aid for Acute AppendicitisACADEMIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE, Issue 3 2010John F. Bealer MD Abstract Objectives:, Diagnosing acute appendicitis is a daunting clinical challenge, as there is no single test that reliably distinguishes acute appendicitis from other etiologies of acute abdominal pain. In this study, the authors examined whether circulating levels of S100A8/A9 could be useful as a marker to aid in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Methods:, Plasma samples from emergency department (ED) patients with acute abdominal pain (n = 181) were tested using an immunoassay for S100A8/A9. Results:, The sensitivity and specificity for S100A8/A9 in diagnosing acute appendicitis were estimated to be 93% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 81% to 97%) and 54% (95% CI = 45% to 62%), respectively. Negative predictive value (NPV) was 96% (95% CI = 89% to 99%), and positive predictive value (PPV) was 37% (95% CI = 28% to 47%). Performance characteristics of elevated white blood cell (WBC) count were also estimated: sensitivity 63% (95% CI = 47% to 76%), specificity 67% (95% CI = 59% to 75%), NPV 86% (95% CI = 78% to 91%), and PPV 36% (95% CI = 26% to 47%). Conclusions:, This is the first report exploring the relationship between circulating S100A8/A9 and acute appendicitis and establishes proof of concept for this biomarker as a diagnostic test for acute appendicitis. Further studies are indicated to optimize the use of this biomarker, in conjunction with other established approaches. Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. There are three established approaches to anti-pneumococcal vaccination: capsular polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine (PPV), protein, polysaccharide conjugate pneumococcal vaccine (CPV) and protein-based pneumococcal vaccine (PBPV). At present, only a 23-valent PPV for use in adults and a seven-valent CPV for use in infants are available in clinical practice. This study reviews available data on the efficacy of the available vaccines in different age groups and disease presentations, and the advantages and shortcomings of each type of vaccine, including future perspectives. Special attention is given to controversies regarding the efficacy of PPV against pneumonia in adults and its protective effects against myocardial infarction. [source] Beyond top-down and bottom-up work redesign: Customizing job content through idiosyncratic dealsJOURNAL OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR, Issue 2-3 2010Severin Hornung Two established approaches to work redesign are formal top-down interventions and proactive bottom-up job crafting. Top-down approaches are limited in their ability to create individually optimized work characteristics, whereas bottom-up processes are constrained by the latitude workers have to modify their own jobs. Following recent research on the idiosyncratic deals (i-deals) individuals negotiate with their employer, task i-deals customizing job content are suggested as a third approach to work redesign. Hypotheses on antecedents and consequences of task i-deals were tested in two studies conducted in the United States and Germany using structural equation modeling. LMX related positively to the extent of successfully negotiated task i-deals, which, in turn, was associated with a more positive evaluation of work characteristics, specifically, higher complexity and control and lower stressors. Work characteristics mediated positive indirect effects of task i-deals on employee initiative and work engagement. Denied requests for task i-deals were associated with a more negative assessment of work characteristics. We conclude with theoretical, practical, and research implications for better understanding and implementing work redesign through i-deals. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. MacLean The terminology of mode 2 knowledge production has become increasingly prominent in discussions on the nature and purpose of management research. This paper attempts to move our understanding of this terminology forward, by providing a detailed exposition of the five features of mode 2 knowledge production in the context of management research and by offering an empirical account of a research project conducted in mode 2. The paper relates the established problem, solving management research traditions of action research, cooperative inquiry, grounded theory and clinical method to the conceptual territory of mode 2. It then considers a specific form of knowledge production where all five features of mode 2 appear simultaneously. The paper demonstrates how the terminology of mode 2 might provide a useful basis for dialogue between management researchers from different methodological traditions. Moreover, the paper concludes that the specific form of mode 2 where all five features are present (called here 5mode2) does differ, in both its conduct and the character of its output, from any of the established approaches considered in this paper. [source] A signs of safety approach to assessing children with sexually concerning or harmful behaviourCHILD ABUSE REVIEW, Issue 2 2005Steve Myers Abstract The Junction is a Barnardo's children's service based in northern England that provides assessment and intervention in the lives of children and young people who have sexually concerning or harmful behaviour. It is developing methods of assessment that move away from more established approaches to provide a service that attempts to address more comprehensively the circumstances of individuals and families, utilizing a Signs of Safety approach. The principles and methods of this approach are outlined with examples of practice. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] |
