Mild to moderately photodamaged skin is characterized by dyspigmentation, fine wrinkles, and tactile roughness. An optimal approach to the topical treatment of photoaging would simultaneously address all appearance issues. Objective. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of 4% hydroquinone and 0.3% retinol in photoaging. Materials and Methods. A 16-week study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of a single cream containing prescription topical 4% hydroquinone for dyspigmentation and the cosmeceutical 0.3% retinol for fine wrinkles in an emollient vehicle for tactile roughness. This novel formulation was compared with 0.05% tretinoin emollient cream, the standard against which all other topical photoaging treatments are compared. Investigator assessments, subject assessments, and photography represented the evaluation end points. Results. The cosmeceutical emollient 4% hydroquinone/0.3% retinol cream more effectively diminished the collective signs of photodamage than 0.05% tretinoin emollient cream in terms of dyspigmentation, fine wrinkles, and tactile roughness in 16 weeks. Conclusion. Combination therapy of hydroquinone and retinol may improve photoaging-associated hyperpigmentation. [source] P58 Multisensitization to plants: clinical caseCONTACT DERMATITIS, Issue 3 2004António Luís Santos We observed a 65 years old male patient with pruritus, scaling erythema and liquenification areas on the face, neck, forearms and hands. For six years he had a story of episodic crisis of exsudative erythema associated with farm work. The skin biopsy showed irregular acantosis with slight hyperkeratosis and a mild multifocal lymphohistiocytic infiltrate, with many eosinophils. The patch tests with the Contact Dermatitis Portuguese Group of Study standard tray were positive for colophony, perfume mix and lactone mix. The patch tests with plant series were positive to atranorin, usnic acid, alantolactone, Parthenolide, lichen mix, Frulania dilatata, Achillea millefolium and Tanacetum extracts. Treatment was started with oral prednisone and hydroxyzine plus topical hydrocortisone and emollient cream with great improvement. The patient was advised about the avoidance of possible allergens sources. This kind of multisensitization to plants is an uncommon finding and poses diagnostic and therapeutic problems. This patient had a sustained recovery by avoiding farm work and by removal of in house plants. [source] Allergic contact dermatitis to propyl gallate and pentylene glycol in an emollient creamAUSTRALASIAN JOURNAL OF DERMATOLOGY, Issue 2 2010Caterina Foti ABSTRACT A 62-year-old man, with a 20-year history of seborrhoeic dermatitis, presented with a worsening of his dermatitis. He had previously been demonstrated to be allergic to various topical corticosteroids, so he had been using an emollient cream (Sebclair®), containing piroctone olamine and various anti-inflammatory substances, for 6 months, with good effect. Patch testing to the cream and its ingredients revealed positive reactions to both propyl gallate and pentylene glycol. A positive reaction to propylene glycol was also detected, whereas patch testing to butylene glycol was negative. Complete remission followed avoidance of the offending substances. [source] |
