Dieting among Adolescent Girls and Their Mothers: An Interpretive Study

This interpretive study focused on mothers' and their adolescent daughters' diet-related thoughts and behaviors and explored the possibility that daughters model their mothers' patterns. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 mothers and their adolescent daughters. Grounded theory analysis revealed that mothers'diet-related experiences were complex, varying across the life span. Among daughters, three types of dieters emerged: nondieters; short-term, low-commitment dieters; and serious dieters. Both mothers and daughters distinguished between "going on a diet" and "watching what you eat." Mother and daughter dieting and watching patterns varied in terms of content, duration, and motive. Findings indicated that modeling effects alone cannot adequately explain diet-related patterns of mothers and their daughters. Intervening variables, such as a daughter's degree of identification with her mother or a mother's verbal reinforcement of a modeled attitude, may affect whether a child models a given maternal behavior. Providing care for an elderly parent: interactions among siblings?

Abstract This article is focused on children providing and financing long-term care for their elderly parent. The aim of this work is to highlight the interactions that may take place among siblings when deciding whether or not to become a caregiver. We look at families with two children using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe; our sample contains 314 dependent elderly and their 628 adult children. In order to identify the interactions between siblings, we have specified a two-person discrete game model. To estimate this model, without invoking the ,coherency' condition, we have added an endogenous selection rule to solve the incompleteness problem arising from multiplicity or absence of equilibrium. Our empirical results suggest that the three classical effects identified by Manski could potentially explain the observed correlation between the siblings' caregiving behaviour. Correlated effects alone appear to be weak. Contextual interactions and endogenous interactions reveal cross-effects. The asymmetric character of the endogenous interactions is our most striking result. The younger child's involvement appears to increase the net benefit of caregiving for the elder one, whereas the elder child's involvement decreases the net benefit of caregiving for the younger child. A survey for redshifted molecular and atomic absorption lines , II.

ABSTRACT We present the results of a z, 2.9 survey for H i 21-cm and molecular absorption in the hosts of radio quasars using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Tidbinbilla 70-m telescope. Although the atomic gas has been searched to limits capable of detecting most known absorption systems, no H i was detected in any of the 10 sources. Previously published searches, which are overwhelmingly at redshifts of z, 1, exhibit a 42 per cent detection rate (31 out of 73 sources), whereas the inclusion of our survey yields a 17 per cent detection rate (two out of 12 sources) at z > 2.5. We therefore believe that our high-redshift selection is responsible for our exclusive non-detections, and find that at ultraviolet (UV) luminosities of LUV, 1023 W Hz,1, 21-cm absorption has never been detected. We also find this to not only apply to our targets, but also those at low redshift exhibiting similar luminosities, giving zero detections out of a total of 16 sources over z= 0.24 to 3.8. This is in contrast to the LUV, 1023 W Hz,1 sources where there is a near 50 per cent detection rate of 21-cm absorption. The mix of 21-cm detections and non-detections is currently attributed to orientation effects, where according to unified schemes of active galactic nuclei, 21-cm absorption is more likely to occur in sources designated as radio galaxies (type 2 objects, where the nucleus is viewed through dense obscuring circumnuclear gas) than in quasars (type 1 objects, where we have a direct view to the nucleus). However, due to the exclusively high UV luminosities of our targets it is not clear whether orientation effects alone can wholly account for the distribution, although there exists the possibility that the large luminosities are indicative of a changing demographic of galaxy types. We also find that below luminosities of LUV, 1023 W Hz,1, both type 1 and type 2 objects have a 50 per cent likelihood of exhibiting 21-cm absorption. Finally, we do not detect molecular gas in any of the sources. The lack of H i absorption, combined with the results from Paper I, suggests these sources are not conducive to high molecular abundances. [source]


Increased colonic transit in rats produced by a combination of a cholinesterase inhibitor with a 5-HT4 receptor agonist

Abstract, Increased cholinergic stimulation and accelerated gastrointestinal (GI) transit may be produced by direct stimulation of the acetylcholine (ACh) receptor with an appropriate agonist by increased release of ACh from cholinergic nerve terminals or by a decreased removal or breakdown of ACh within cholinergic synapses. The acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, neostigmine, and the 5-HT4 receptor partial agonist tegaserod, are two agents with known prokinetic activity which work by different mechanisms that result in increased levels of ACh at cholinergic synapses innervating intestinal smooth muscle. Here, we aimed to investigate the potential synergistic effect on colonic transit that may occur with concomitant use of these two agents. Colonic transit was indirectly assessed in rats via measurements of fecal pellet output every 30 min for 2.5 h following administration of neostigmine (0.003,0.1 mg kg,1, i.p.), tegaserod (0.01,1.0 mg kg,1, i.p.), or a combination of both compounds. When administered alone, neostigmine or tegaserod caused a dose-dependent increase in fecal pellet output. In combination, low doses of the two agents which did not produce statistically significant effects alone, compared to the vehicle, caused a significant increase in fecal pellet output. Combinations of higher doses of neostigmine and tegaserod did not display synergy. In summary, when combined at low doses, neostigmine and tegaserod produce synergistic effects manifested by a statistically significant increase in the expulsion of fecal pellets. A combination of an anticholinesterase agent with a 5-HT4 receptor agonist may prove to be a useful therapeutic approach to treat conditions associated with slow GI transit. [source]
