Selected AbstractsPolish and Belgian consumers' perception of environmentally friendly behaviourINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CONSUMER STUDIES, Issue 1 2000Irene T. M. Roozen The aim of this study was to design a method for evaluating the importance that consumers place on the characteristics of environmentally friendly (EF) products and on consumer EF behaviour. Attitudes and opinions of consumers regarding the EF value of the different aspects of consumer behaviour , purchasing, using and disposing of goods , were measured. The perception of EF behaviour was analysed for Belgian and Polish consumers, a Western and an Eastern European country. The cultural, economic and political differences between Belgium and Poland may imply that their consideration of EF behaviour is different. The perception of consumers about buying, using and disposing of EF products does not necessarily indicate their own EF behaviour, but it gives an indication of what consumers think is EF behaviour. On the basis of the results, policy-makers and industry can diagnose the consumers' perceived cost,benefit relationship of EF consumer behaviour. An evaluation of what consumers think is EF can be made for the two countries. Marketers, government and EF organizations can draw on our research results when developing EF products and/or advertising campaigns. MALBRAIN Background: Volumetric monitoring with right ventricular end-diastolic volume indexed (RVEDVi) and global end-diastolic volume indexed (GEDVi) is increasingly being suggested as a superior preload indicator compared with the filling pressures central venous pressure (CVP) or the pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP). However, static monitoring of these volumetric parameters has not consistently been shown to be able to predict changes in cardiac index (CI). The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a correction of RVEDVi and GEDVi with a measure of the individual contractile reserve, assessed by right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) and global ejection fraction, improves the ability of RVEDVi and GEDVi to monitor changes in preload over time in critically ill patients. Methods: Hemodynamic measurements, both by pulmonary artery and by transcardiopulmonary thermodilution, were performed in 11 mechanically ventilated medical ICU patients. Correction of volumes was achieved by normalization to EF deviation from normal EF values in an exponential fashion. Data before and after fluid administration were obtained in eight patients, while data before and after diuretics were obtained in seven patients. Results: No correlation was found between the change in cardiac filling pressures (,CVP, ,PCWP) and ,CI (R2 0.01 and 0.00, respectively). Further, no correlation was found between ,RVEDVi or ,GEDVi and ,CI (R2 0.10 and 0.13, respectively). In contrast, a significant correlation was found between ,RVEDVi corrected to RVEF (,cRVEDVi) and ,CI (R2 0.64), as well as between ,cGEDVi and ,CI (R2 0.59). An increase in the net fluid balance with +844 ± 495 ml/m2 resulted in a significant increase in CI of 0.5 ± 0.3 l/min/m2; however, only ,cRVEDVi (R2 0.58) and ,cGEDVi (R2 0.36) correlated significantly with ,CI. Administration of diuretics resulting in a net fluid balance of ,942 ± 658 ml/m2 caused a significant decrease in CI with 0.7 ± 0.5 l/min/m2; however, only ,cRVEDVi (R2 0.80) and ,cGEDVi (R2 0.61) correlated significantly with ,CI. Conclusion: Correction of volumetric preload parameters by measures of ejection fraction improved the ability of these parameters to assess changes in preload over time in this heterogeneous group of critically ill patients. [source] HLA typing in Taiwanese patients with oral submucous fibrosisJOURNAL OF ORAL PATHOLOGY & MEDICINE, Issue 4 2004Hsin-Ming Chen Background:, A significant association of certain human leukocyte antigens (HLA) and haplotypic pairs with oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) has been reported. However, controversial result of no HLA association with OSF has also been reported. In this study, the phenotype and haplotype frequencies of HLA-A, -B, -C, -DRB1, and -DQB1 in 135 Taiwanese OSF patients were calculated and compared with those in 540 healthy control Taiwanese. Methods:, The analysis of HLA-A, -B, and -C antigens, and of HLA-DRB1 and -DQB1 alleles in OSF patients and healthy control subjects, was performed by serologic typing and DNA typing using polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP), respectively. Results:, We found that the phenotype frequency of HLA-B76 (3.0%) in OSF patients was significantly greater than that (0%) in healthy control subjects (corrected P (Pc) = 0.000). In addition, the haplotype frequencies of HLA-B48/Cw7 (3.0%), -B51/Cw7 (6.7%), and -B62/Cw7 (8.2%) in OSF patients were significantly greater than the corresponding haplotype frequencies (0, 0.7, and 1.9%, respectively) in healthy control subjects (Pc = 0.000). The relative risk (RR) values of haplotypes B51/Cw7 (9.57) and B62/Cw7 (4.7) were greater than the RR values of phenotypes B51 (1.81), B62 (2.31), and Cw7 (1.91) in OSF patients. In addition, the etiologic fraction (EF) value of haplotype B51/Cw7 (0.63) was higher than the EF values of phenotypes B51 (0.2) and Cw7 (0.59). Conclusions:, We conclude that some Taiwanese areca quid (AQ) chewers with particular HLA phenotypes and haplotypes are prone to have OSF. In addition, some particular HLA haplotypes may play more important roles than the individual HLA phenotypes for the genetic susceptibility to OSF. However, the significantly increased HLA phenotype B76 and three of the common HLA haplotypes detected are present in only about 20% of incident cases of OSF. [source] Validation of a new automated method for analysis of gated-SPECT imagesCLINICAL PHYSIOLOGY AND FUNCTIONAL IMAGING, Issue 3 2006Milan Lomsky Summary We recently presented a new method for quantification of CArdiac FUnction , denoted CAFU , as the first step in the development of an automated method for integrated interpretation of gated myocardial perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images. The aim of this study was to validate CAFU in the assessment of global and regional function of the left ventricle. Quantitative gated-SPECT (QGS), the most widely used software package for quantification of gated-SPECT images, was used as reference method for the measurements of ejection fraction (EF) and ventricular volumes, and visual analysis by an experienced physician was used as reference method for the measurements of regional wall motion and thickening. Two different groups of consecutive patients referred for myocardial perfusion scintigraphy were studied. Global function was evaluated in 316 patients and regional function in 49 other patients. The studies were performed using a 2-day stress/rest 99 m-Tc-sestamibi protocol. A good correlation was found between EF values from QGS and CAFU (EF CAFU = 0·84 EF QGS + 13, r = 0·94), but CAFU values were on average 4 EF points higher than QGS values. With CAFU the segments with normal thickening according to the physician showed significantly higher thickening values (in all parts of the myocardium) compared to the segments classified as having abnormal thickening. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that CAFU can be used to quantify global and regional function in gated-SPECT images. This is an important step in our development of an automated method for integrated interpretation of gated-SPECT myocardial perfusion scintigraphy studies. [source] |
