Early findings in comparison of AMSR-E/Aqua L3 global snow water equivalent EASE-grids data with in situ observations for Eastern Turkey

HYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 15 2008
A. Emre Tekeli
Abstract Microwave remote sensing (RS) enables the direct determination of snow water equivalent (SWE), which is an important snow parameter for water resources management. The accuracy of remotely sensed SWE values has always been a concern. Previous studies evaluated global SWE monitoring. However, regional effects such as vegetation, snow grain size, snow density and local meteorological conditions may lead to uncertainties. Thus, regional validation studies that quantify and help to understand these uncertainties and possible error sources are important both for algorithm development and accurate SWE computation. In this study, data of Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E)/Aqua level 3 global SWE Equal Area Scalable Earth (EASE) Grids are compared with ground measurements for 2002,2003 winter period for Eastern Turkey, which includes the headwaters of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers and is fed largely from snowmelt. Thus, accurate determination of SWE is important in optimum resource management for both Turkey and downstream nations. Analyses indicated that AMSR-E generally overestimated SWE in early season. As winter progressed, higher in situ SWE values with respect to AMSR-E were observed which led to underestimation by AMSR-E. The differences between AMSR-E and in situ SWE varied between , 218 and 93 mm. Use of in situ snow densities lead the correlation coefficient between AMSR-E and in situ SWE to increase from 0·10 to 0·32. Underestimation of SWE by AMSR-E occurs after some warm periods, while overestimations occur following refreezing. On rainy days or some days after precipitation within the warm periods, zero AMSR-E SWE values are observed. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]

Social support and symptoms of postpartum depression among new mothers in Eastern Turkey

JOURNAL OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY RESEARCH (ELECTRONIC), Issue 4 2008
Emel Ege
Abstract Aim:, The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between symptoms of postpartum depression and social support in new mothers in a semi-rural province (Malatya) of Eastern Turkey. Methods:, This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The study was conducted with a 12-item Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) questionnaire, a 10-item Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) questionnaire, and a 16-item demographic/obstetric questionnaire designed by the authors. 364 women who were between 6 to 48 weeks postpartum were included in the study. Results:, Symptoms of postpartum depression were negatively correlated with social support (,0.39, P = 0.000). The frequency of the prevalence of symptoms of postpartum depression was 33.2%. The study showed that EPDS mean score was related to several factors, including age, woman's education, woman's occupation, socioeconomic status of family, spouse's education, number of years married, parity, planned pregnancy, method of delivery, knowledge of infant care, sharing of problems with a close person, past psychiatric history and family support during the postnatal period in an Eastern province of Turkey. Conclusion:, Symptoms of postpartum depression were negatively correlated among Turkish women living in the Malatya province of Eastern Turkey and were associated with the level of social support. The prevalence of postpartum depression was higher than in the published reports regarding most regions of Turkey, with the exception of Northeastern Turkey. [source]

Thickness of the lithosphere east of the Dead Sea Transform

GEOPHYSICAL JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL, Issue 2 2006
Ayman Mohsen
SUMMARY We use the S receiver function method to study the lithosphere at the Dead Sea Transform (DST). A temporary network of 22 seismic broad-band stations was operated on both sides of the DST from 2000 to 2001 as part of the DESERT project. We also used data from six additional permanent broad-band seismic stations at the DST and in the surrounding area, that is, in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Cyprus. Clear S -to- P converted phases from the crust, mantle boundary (Moho) and a deeper discontinuity, which we interpret as lithosphere, asthenosphere boundary (LAB) have been observed. The Moho depth (30,38 km) obtained from S receiver functions agrees well with the results from P receiver functions and other geophysical data. We observe thinning of the lithosphere on the eastern side of the DST from 80 km in the north of the Dead Sea to about 65 km at the Gulf of Aqaba. On the western side of the DST, the few data indicate a thin LAB of about 65 km. For comparison, we found a 90-km-thick lithosphere in eastern Turkey and a 160-km-thick lithosphere under the Arabian shield, respectively. These observations support previous suggestions, based on xenolith data, heat flow observations, regional uplift history and geodynamic modelling, that the lithosphere around DST has been significantly thinned in the Late Cenozoic, likely following rifting and spreading of the Red Sea. Skeletal remains of dogs unearthed from the Van-Yoncatepe necropolises

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF OSTEOARCHAEOLOGY, Issue 5 2002
Vedat Onar
Abstract A total of 15 dog skulls and a number of bones have been discovered in two burial chambers dating from 1,000 BC in the necropolises of the Van-Yoncatepe Castle in eastern Turkey. The finds were a dog skeleton in burial chamber M5 and 14 dog skulls and plenty of bones in burial chamber M6. It was determined on examination that the skeleton found in burial chamber M5 was an 11,12-year female dog, and that the skulls unearthed from burial chamber M6 belonged to dogs with an age range of seven to eight months to 12,13 years. In the latter chamber, however, except for one skull whose sex could not be determined, one was ascertained to belong to a female dog and the rest to males. Calculations of 20 different indices and ratios were made on the skulls. This showed that these skulls were of the dolichocephalic type. It was observed that there were signs of a widespread periodontal disease and alveolar recession. Enamel hypoplasia and abscess chambers detected on the teeth, and deformations observed in the hard palate were evidence enough to suggest that these were undernourished dogs. There were also some facial fractures, which were noticed to have occurred before death. On the other hand, examination carried out on the bones revealed that the dogs were of medium size, and that they were likely to have had a withers height of 50,55 cm. The data obtained from both the burial chambers brought to light the fact that these dogs were more of the hunting or working types. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]

Family support, perceived self-efficacy and self-care behaviour of Turkish patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 8 2007
Magfiret Kara Ka
Aim., The purpose of this study was to describe family support, self-efficacy perception and self-care behaviour among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and to ascertain the relationship between these variables. Background., It is important to work at improving confidence in the patients' ability to follow a self-care regimen by increasing self-efficacy. Family support also plays an important role in self-care activities. Method and design., The study design is descriptive and correlational. Of 230 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who were recruited for the study, 200 agreed to participate. The patients were recruited by the first author from an outpatient clinic in the Department of Chest Disease of a university hospital and a pulmonary hospital in Erzurum, eastern Turkey. Data were collected by using a demographic data form, the Perceived Social Support from Family Scale, the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Self-efficacy Scale and the Alberto Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Self-care Behaviour Inventory. Results., Although most participants (91·5%) perceived that they had family support and more than three quarters (73·0%) of the participants engaged in an adequate amount of self-care behaviours, only twenty five participants' (12·5%) perceived self-efficacy as high. There were statistically significant positive relationships between family support and self-care behaviour (r = 0·302; p = 0·01) and between self-efficacy and self-care behaviour (r = 0·186; p = 0·01). There was also a statistically significant positive relationship between family support and self-efficacy (r = 0·412; p = 0·01). Conclusion., The results of the study demonstrated weak to moderate, but statistically significant, relationships between family support and self-care behaviours, self-efficacy and self-care behaviour and family support and self-efficacy in Turkish patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Relevance to clinical practice., The assessment of the family support, self-efficacy and self-care behaviours of the patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should be an essential part of nursing practice. The study also provides the foundation for the conduct of future studies of self-care training for managing patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. [source]

Effectiveness of bran supplement in older orthopaedic patients with constipation

JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 5 2007
Zennure Kaçmaz MSc
Aim., The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of planned nursing interventions, including bran supplement, on the bowel management of older orthopaedic patients. Background., Constipation is prevalent among older people. Constipation is also well-known to be a problem for a range of orthopaedic patients. Orthopaedic diseases or conditions may, because of the specific problems, cause this. The problem may also arise as a result of the orthopaedic treatment options undertaken by patients. Design., A quasiexperimental design was employed. Methods., The patients were recruited from an orthopaedic clinic at a university hospital in Erzurum, eastern Turkey. Descriptive statistics, independent sample test t -test, chi-square and McNemar test were used to analyse the data. Constipation problems were identified through interviews by using the Constipation Diagnosis Form. Interviews were performed within the fourth postoperative day. After that, while the patients in the control group received routine nursing care according to clinic routine, the patients in the experimental group received bran supplement together with planned nursing interventions. The patents in both groups were followed by using the Constipation Follow Form. Results., While patients in the experimental group showed significant improvements in most characteristics of bowel elimination such as time of defecation, intensity of faeces, colour of faeces and amount of faeces, the control group showed a significant improvement in only duration of defecation. Conclusions., The results of the study indicate planned nursing interventions including bran supplement are more effective than routine nursing interventions for management of constipation problems in older orthopaedic patients. Relevance to clinical practice., Nurses have an important part to play in both prevention and management of constipation. Constipation is a problem especially for older orthopaedic patients. Planned nursing interventions that include bran supplements may be more effective than routine nursing interventions for management of constipation problems in older orthopaedic patients. [source]

THE RESERVOIR POTENTIAL OF MIOCENE CARBONATE ROCKS IN THE ASKALE AND HINIS-MUS-VAN SUB-BASINS, EAST ANATOLIA, TURKEY

JOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 2 2003
A. G. Büyükutku
Lower-middle Miocene limestones in East Anatolia (eastern Turkey) assigned to the Adilcevaz Formation were studied using core and cuttings data from eight wells in the Tertiary Askale and Hinis-Mus-Van sub-basins. Their depositional environment, diagenetic characteristics and reservoir quality are reviewed. The Adilcevaz Formation carbonates are up to 225m thick. Abundant bioclasts are dominated by corals, encrusting red algae, bryozoans, and benthonic and planktonic foraminifera. Reef-core, fore-reef and back-reef facies were recognized. The preservation of primary porosity is generally poor as a result of late calcite cementation. Porosity is mainly present as moulds, vugs and interparticle types, which are best developed in the fore-reef and reef-core facies. However these pores are poorly connected and permeability is generally less than 0.1 mD. In contrast to coeval limestones of similiar facies in Iran, Iraq and other parts of the Middle East, the Adilcevaz Formation has little reservoir potential. [source]
