Palaeomagnetic study of the El Quemado complex and Marifil formation, Patagonian Jurassic igneous province, Argentina

SUMMARY The upper Jurassic El Quemado Complex was sampled at 36 sites from five localities in the cordilleran foothills of southern Patagonia between Lago Argentino and Lago Posadas,Sierra Colorada, and the middle Jurassic Marifil Formation at 12 sites in the Somuncurá Massif near Camarones. The main lithology was ignimbrite, with minor tuff and lava. Petrographical and SEM observation show that the El Quemado rocks suffered an intense, high-temperature alteration which resulted in transformation of most primary Ti-magnetite in pseudobrookite, rutile and minor Ti-haematite and Fe hydrated oxides. A similar, less pronounced alteration occurred in the Marifil rocks. 40Ar/39Ar dating of El Quemado was possible for one sample from Sierra Colorada and yielded an age of 156.5 ± 1.9 Ma. Magnetic mineralogy measurements (isothermal remanence, hysteresis loop, Curie balance) show that the remanent magnetization is dominated by PSD low-Ti magnetite, often associated to a minor high-coercive mineral (haematite). Secondary magnetization components are usually absent or weak at El Quemado sites, strong at Marifil. They were completely erased by thermal and AF demagnetization and a characteristic remanence (ChRM) stable up to temperatures higher than 550°C or peak-field values of 100 mT was successfully isolated. The virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) from the Marifil Formation (83°S, 138°E) is in agreement with the literature data for Jurassic rocks from stable South America. The El Quemado VGPs fall in two groups. The localities to the north of latitude 48°S (Lago Posadas, Sierra Colorada) yield a VGP (81°S, 172°E) close to that of Marifil, whereas those south of latitude 49°S (Lago San Martín, Lago Argentino) show a highly elongated VGP distribution consistent with counter-clockwise block-rotation about vertical axes. These rotations were likely caused by thrust sheets which were rotating counter-clockwise at the same time they were advancing towards the foreland. The amount of rotation varies according to the location of the sampling sites in the thrust and fold belt. [source]


The presence and distribution of lubricin in the caprine intervertebral disc

Abstract Lubricin is a large, multifunctional glycoprotein that is known to play a role as a boundary lubricant in diarthrodial joint articulation. The hypothesis of this study was that lubricin is present in the intervertebral disc in a distribution consistent with serving to facilitate interlamellar tribology. The objectives were to: (1) determine the distribution of lubricin in the normal caprine disc; and (2) investigate the synthesis of lubricin by caprine annulus fibrosus (AF) and nucleus pulposus (NP) cells in vitro, using immunohistochemical methods. Caprine lumbar intervertebral discs from five levels and four animals were studied. Positive staining revealed the presence of the lubricin in the outer AF of nearly all samples. No staining was present in the inner AF or the NP. Within the outer AF, lubricin was prominent in the layers separating lamellae and in the extracellular matrix of the lamellae. Some of the AF cells within the lubricin-positive regions demonstrated intracellular lubricin staining, suggesting that these cells may be synthesizing the lubricin protein observed. Immunohistochemistry performed on monolayer cultures of primary AF and NP cells demonstrated intracellular lubricin staining in both cell types. Thus, lubricin is selectively present in the outer caprine intervertebral disc AF, and its distribution suggests that it may play a role in interlamellar tribology. Cells from both the annulus and nucleus were found capable of synthesizing lubricin in vitro, suggesting that these cells may be a potential source of the glycoprotein under some conditions. © 2008 Orthopaedic Research Society. A valid equation for the well-stirred perfusion limited physiologically based pharmacokinetic model that consistently accounts for the blood,tissue drug distribution in the organ and the corresponding valid equation for the steady state volume of distribution

Abstract A consistent account of the assumptions of the well-stirred perfusion limited model leads to the equation for the organ tissue that does not coincide with that often presented in books and papers. The difference in pharmacokinetic profiles calculated by the valid and the commonly used equations could be quite significant, particularly due to contribution of the organs with relatively large perfusion volume, and especially for drugs with small tissue,plasma partition coefficient and high blood,plasma concentration ratio. Application of the valid equation may result in much faster initial drop of drug plasma concentration time curve and significantly longer terminal half-life, especially for low extraction ratio drugs. Immigration, species radiation and extinction in a highly diverse songbird lineage: white-eyes on Indian Ocean islands

Abstract Molecular phylogenetic hypotheses of species-rich lineages in regions where geological history can be reliably inferred may provide insights into the scale of processes driving diversification. Here we sample all extant or recently extinct white-eye (Zosterops) taxa of the southwest Indian Ocean, combined with samples from all principal continental lineages. Results support a high dispersal capability, with at least two independent continental sources for white-eyes of the region. An early (within 1.8 million years ago) expansion into the Indian Ocean may have originated either from Asia or Africa; the three resulting lineages show a disparate distribution consistent with considerable extinction following their arrival. Africa is supported as the origin of a later expansion into the region (within 1.2 million years ago). On two islands, a pair of Zosterops species derived from independent immigrations into the Indian Ocean co-occur or may have formerly co-occurred, providing strong support for their origin by double-island colonization rather than within-island (sympatric or microallopatric) speciation. On Mauritius and La Réunion, phylogenetic placement of sympatric white-eyes allow us to rule out a scenario in which independent within-island speciation occurred on both islands; one of the species pairs must have arisen by double colonization, while the other pair is likely to have arisen by the same mechanism. Long-distance immigration therefore appears to be responsible for much of the region's white-eye diversity. Independent immigrations into the region have resulted in lineages with mutually exclusive distributions and it seems likely that competition with congeneric species, rather than arrival frequency, may limit present-day diversity. Telomere looping in P. sativum (common garden pea)

Summary Telomeres vary greatly in size among plants and, in most higher plants, consist of a long array of 5,-TTTAGGG-3,/3,-AAATCCC-5, (TTTAGGG) repeats. Recently, telomeric DNA in human, mouse, oxytricha, and trypanosome chromosomes have been found arranged into loops (t-loops), proposed to sequester the telomere from unwanted repair events and prevent activation of DNA damage checkpoints. We have asked whether t-loops exist in the higher order plant Pisum sativum (garden pea). DNA was isolated from the shoots and root tips of germinating seeds. Analysis of the telomeric restriction fragments showed that DNA hybridizing to a (TTTAGGG)n probe migrated as a smear centering around 25 kb, and direct sequencing verified the repeat to be (TTTAGGG)n. Total DNA in isolated nuclei was photo-cross-linked, and the telomeric restriction fragments were purified by gel filtration. Electron microscopic (EM) analysis revealed DNA molecules arranged as t-loops with a size distribution consistent with that seen by gel electrophoresis. Some molecules had loops as large as 75 kb. These results show that the arrangement of telomeric DNA into loops occurs in higher plants. [source]


Dispersal of aquatic organisms by waterbirds: a review of past research and priorities for future studies

1.,Inland wetlands constitute ecological islands of aquatic habitat often isolated by huge areas of non-suitable terrestrial habitats. Although most aquatic organisms lack the capacity to disperse by themselves to neighbouring catchments, many species present widespread distributions consistent with frequent dispersal by migratory waterbirds. 2.,A literature review indicates that bird-mediated passive transport of propagules of aquatic invertebrates and plants is a frequent process in the field, at least at a local scale. Both endozoochory (internal transport) and ectozoochory (external transport) are important processes. 3.,The characteristics of the dispersed and the disperser species that facilitate such transport remain largely uninvestigated, but a small propagule size tends to favour dispersal by both internal and external transport. 4.,We review the information currently available on the processes of waterbird-mediated dispersal, establishing the limits of current knowledge and highlighting problems with research methods used in previous studies. We also identify studies required in the future to further our understanding of the role of such dispersal in aquatic ecology. [source]
