Selected AbstractsDifferences in attitudes between patients with primary colorectal cancer and patients with secondary colorectal cancer: is it reflected in their willingness to participate in drug trials?EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF CANCER CARE, Issue 2 2005G. GARCEA mrcs Recruitment of patients into drug trials is essential in order to evaluate new treatments. Knowing why patients enter drug trials and their fears regarding them can be used in future research to ensure good recruitment and provide a supportive atmosphere for patients. Forty patients with colorectal cancer and 30 patients with colorectal liver metastases were asked to participate in a drug trial involving the oral consumption of a diet-derived agent of unknown therapeutic action. All patients agreeing or refusing to participate were asked to complete a short questionnaire with a series of options detailing the reasons behind their decision. Patients with colorectal hepatic metastases were motivated by altruism in entering the trial (e.g. helping others, helping the investigator) and displayed a realistic expectation that the drug would give little direct benefit to them. Patients with primary colorectal tumours were motivated by more ,selfish' reasons such as helping themselves and displayed an unrealistic expectation concerning any therapeutic benefit from the trial drug. Over 90% of all patients polled stated that their decision was made after reading the patient information leaflet. Patients with different stages of the same disease have very different fears and anticipations of drug trials, which need to be addressed specifically. The importance of the initial contact is demonstrated. Unrealistic expectations regarding the trial drug are common despite clear information to the contrary. [source] REVIEW: Mechanisms driving change: altered species interactions and ecosystem function through global warmingJOURNAL OF ANIMAL ECOLOGY, Issue 5 2010Lochran W. Traill Summary 1.,We review the mechanisms behind ecosystem functions, the processes that facilitate energy transfer along food webs, and the major processes that allow the cycling of carbon, oxygen and nitrogen, and use case studies to show how these have already been, and will continue to be, altered by global warming. 2.,Increased temperatures will affect the interactions between heterotrophs and autotrophs (e.g. pollination and seed dispersal), and between heterotrophs (e.g. predators-prey, parasites/pathogens-hosts), with generally negative ramifications for important ecosystem services (functions that provide direct benefit to human society such as pollination) and potential for heightened species co-extinction rates. 3.,Mitigation of likely impacts of warming will require, in particular, the maintenance of species diversity as insurance for the provision of basic ecosystem services. Key to this will be long-term monitoring and focused research that seek to maintain ecosystem resilience in the face of global warming. 4.,We provide guidelines for pursuing research that quantifies the nexus between ecosystem function and global warming. These include documentation of key functional species groups within systems, and understanding the principal outcomes arising from direct and indirect effects of a rapidly warming environment. Localized and targeted research and monitoring, complemented with laboratory work, will determine outcomes for resilience and guide adaptive conservation responses and long-term planning. [source] RESEARCH ON PRISONERS , A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE IOM COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS (2006) AND EUROPEAN REGULATIONSBIOETHICS, Issue 1 2010BERNICE S. ELGER ABSTRACT The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Ethical Considerations for Revisions to DHHS Regulations for Protection of Prisoners Involved in Research published its report in 2006. It was charged with developing an ethical framework for the conduct of research with prisoners and identifying the safeguards and conditions necessary to ensure that research with prisoners is conducted ethically. The recommendations contained in the IOM report differ from current European regulations in several ways, some being more restrictive and some less so. For example, the IOM report suggests limiting the percentage of prisoners that should be involved in a biomedical study to 50%, a limit that does not exist in Europe. However, the report does not specifically advise against research without a direct benefit to an individual prisoner: the European regulations are more restrictive than the IOM committee recommendations in this respect. The definition of minimal risk varies, as well as the proposed role of the minimal risk requirement and of the principle of subsidiarity (research that can only be done effectively in prisons). The IOM report proposes a number of thoughtful suggestions, which it would be beneficial to implement everywhere, such as registers of research on prisoners. The European regulations offer pragmatic solutions to several thorny issues. In summary, the IOM committee report represents an admirable effort to tackle the present inconsistencies and deficiencies of federal regulations in the US on research on prisoners (45 CFR 46 Subpart C). Nonetheless, before acting on the recommendations, US regulators might consider revisiting international guidelines such as those published by the Council for International Organizations of Medical Science (CIOMS) and the Declaration of Helsinki. [source] The molecular genetics of the genodermatoses: progress to date and future directionsBRITISH JOURNAL OF DERMATOLOGY, Issue 1 2003A.D. Irvine Summary The Human Genome Mapping Project and allied rapid advances in genetic technology over the past decade have facilitated accurate association of allelic variations in several genes with specific skin phenotypes. Currently the genetic bases of the majority of the more common genodermatoses have been elucidated. In scientific terms this work has been extraordinarily successful and has yielded many new biological insights. These advances, although exciting, have yet to be translated into direct benefit for patients with these diseases. Genetic counselling has been greatly aided by gene identification, by the better understanding of genotype,phenotype correlation and by the disclosure of unexpected genetic mechanisms in some families. Knowledge of the molecular basis of these disorders has also been vital in enabling DNA-based prenatal diagnosis in several conditions and DNA-based preimplantation diagnosis has been used in a selected few. While this successful period of gene mapping is now nearing completion, progress towards the next goal, that of developing therapeutic strategies based on the knowledge of these underlying genetic mechanisms, has proven frustratingly slow. Despite the ready access to the skin compared with solid internal organs, the challenges of cutaneous gene therapy are legion and many technical issues need to be surmounted to enable gene replacement or modification of gene expression to have a useful role in these disorders. In this article we make a comprehensive review of progress to date in gene identification, genotype,phenotype correlation, prenatal diagnosis and cutaneous gene therapy, and we examine future directions for research in this field. Wagner JR Abstract., 1.,Females often select mates based on signals correlated with the quality of the direct benefits that males will provide to them. A male's quality as a mate and the structure of his mating signals may covary because both traits are energetically expensive for males to produce and because both traits are affected by short-term changes in nutritional condition. 2.,In the variable field cricket, Gryllus lineaticeps, previous work has shown that females receive reproductive benefits from males that produce higher chirp rates and lifespan benefits from males that produce longer chirp durations, even when they only receive the sperm and seminal fluid contained in male spermatophores. Higher chirp rates are energetically expensive for males to produce, and chirp rate is strongly affected by diet quality, whereas longer chirp durations do not appear to be expensive for males to produce, and chirp duration does not appear to be affected by male diet quality. In this study two hypotheses were tested about the energetic costs of spermatophore production: (1) that spermatophores are expensive for males to produce and (2) that males providing greater direct benefits to females incur higher costs of spermatophore production. 3.,Males that were provided with a lower quality diet took longer to produce a new spermatophore. This result suggests that spermatophores are costly for males to produce. 4.,Males that produced higher chirp rates took longer to produce a new spermatophore. This result suggests that male chirp rate and female reproductive benefits may covary because both traits are energetically expensive for males to produce and thus are affected by male nutritional condition. There was no association, however, between male chirp duration and spermatophore production time. [source] Ethical issues related to epilepsy care in the developing worldEPILEPSIA, Issue 5 2009Chong-Tin Tan Summary There are three major issues of ethical concern related to epilepsy care in the developing world. First, is it ethical for a developing country to channel its limited resources from direct epilepsy care to research? The main considerations in addressing this question are the particular research questions to be addressed and whether such research will bring direct benefits to the local community. Second, in a country with limited resources, when does ignoring the high treatment gap become an ethical issue? This question is of particular concern when the community has enough resources to afford treatment for its poor, yet is not providing such care because of gross wastage and misallocation of the national resources. Third, do countries with plentiful resources have an ethical responsibility to help relieve the high epilepsy treatment gap of poor countries? Indeed, we believe that reasonable health care is a basic human right, and that human rights transcend national boundaries. Although health care is usually the responsibility of the nation-state, many modern states in the developing world are arbitrary creations of colonization. There is often a long process from the establishment of a political-legal state to a mature functional nation. During the long process of nation building, help from neighboring countries is often required. [source] Female-Biased Helping in a Cooperatively Breeding Bird: Female Benefits or Male Costs?ETHOLOGY, Issue 6 2007Dean A. Williams There is often a sex bias in helping effort in cooperatively breeding species with both male and female helpers, and yet this phenomenon is still poorly understood. Although sex-biased helping is often assumed to be correlated with sex-specific benefits, sex-specific costs could also be responsible for sex-biased helping. Cooperatively breeding brown jays (Cyanocorax morio) in Monteverde, Costa Rica have helpers of both sexes and dispersal is male-biased, a rare reversal of the female-biased dispersal pattern often seen in birds. We quantified helper contributions to nestling care and analyzed whether there was sex-biased helping and if so, whether it was correlated with known benefits derived via helping. Brown jay helpers provided over 70% of all nestling feedings, but they did not appear to decrease the workload of breeders across the range of observed group sizes. Female helpers fed nestlings and engaged in vigilance at significantly higher levels than male helpers. Nonetheless, female helpers did not appear to gain direct benefits, either through current reproduction or group augmentation, or indirect fitness benefits from helping during the nestling stage. While it is possible that females could be accruing subtle future direct benefits such as breeding experience or alliance formation from helping, future studies should focus on whether the observed sex bias in helping is because males decrease their care relative to females in order to pursue extra-territorial forays. Explanations for sex-biased helping in cooperative breeders are proving to be as varied as those proposed for helping behavior in general, suggesting that it will often be necessary to quantify a wide range of benefits and costs when seeking explanations for sex-biased helping. [source] A Sex-Specific Affiliative Contact Behavior in Indian Ocean Bottlenose Dolphins, Tursiops sp.ETHOLOGY, Issue 7 2006Richard Connor A variety of signals are employed by animals to establish, mediate and advertise social bonds. Gentle contact behaviors, such as grooming in primates, are an important class of affiliative signals that may provide direct benefits (e.g. stress reduction, parasite removal) in addition to their signal information. Unlike other kinds of signals (e.g. male displays) examples of affiliative contact behaviors restricted to one sex are rare. Here we describe a strongly sex-biased affiliative behavior ,contact swimming', in female bottlenose dolphins in Shark Bay, Western Australia. Females were more likely to be observed contact swimming than males and the presence of males likely influenced this behavior. This is surprising given that female relationships have been characterized as weak. Female dolphins are sometimes herded and harassed by males and contact swimming occurs most often between females in male-biased groups. Contact swimming may serve as a signal of cooperation between females. Possible direct benefits include stress reduction and assisted locomotion. LION Abstract Under which ecological conditions should individuals help their neighbours? We investigate the effect of habitat saturation on the evolution of helping behaviours in a spatially structured population. We combine the formalisms of population genetics and spatial moment equations to tease out the effects of various physiological (direct benefits and costs of helping) and ecological parameters (such as the density of empty sites) on the selection gradient on helping. Our analysis highlights the crucial importance of demography for the evolution of helping behaviours. It shows that habitat saturation can have contrasting effects, depending on the form of competition (direct vs. indirect competition) and on the conditionality of helping. In our attempt to bridge the gap between spatial ecology and population genetics, we derive an expression for relatedness that takes into account both habitat saturation and the spatial structure of genetic variation. This analysis helps clarify discrepancies in the results obtained by previous theoretical studies. It also provides a theoretical framework taking into account the interplay between demography and kin selection, in which new biological questions can be explored. LEHMANN Abstract One of the enduring puzzles in biology and the social sciences is the origin and persistence of intraspecific cooperation and altruism in humans and other species. Hundreds of theoretical models have been proposed and there is much confusion about the relationship between these models. To clarify the situation, we developed a synthetic conceptual framework that delineates the conditions necessary for the evolution of altruism and cooperation. We show that at least one of the four following conditions needs to be fulfilled: direct benefits to the focal individual performing a cooperative act; direct or indirect information allowing a better than random guess about whether a given individual will behave cooperatively in repeated reciprocal interactions; preferential interactions between related individuals; and genetic correlation between genes coding for altruism and phenotypic traits that can be identified. When one or more of these conditions are met, altruism or cooperation can evolve if the cost-to-benefit ratio of altruistic and cooperative acts is greater than a threshold value. The cost-to-benefit ratio can be altered by coercion, punishment and policing which therefore act as mechanisms facilitating the evolution of altruism and cooperation. All the models proposed so far are explicitly or implicitly built on these general principles, allowing us to classify them into four general categories. [source] Multiple paternity in reptiles: patterns and processesMOLECULAR ECOLOGY, Issue 11 2008TOBIAS ULLER Abstract The evolution of female promiscuity poses an intriguing problem as benefits of mating with multiple males often have to arise via indirect, genetic, effects. Studies on birds have documented that multiple paternity is common in natural populations but strong evidence for selection via female benefits is lacking. In an attempt to evaluate the evidence more broadly, we review studies of multiple paternity in natural populations of all major groups of nonavian reptiles. Multiple paternity has been documented in all species investigated so far and commonly exists in over 50% of clutches, with particularly high levels in snakes and lizards. Marine turtles and lizards with prolonged pair-bonding have relatively low levels of multiple paternity but levels are nevertheless higher than in many vertebrates with parental care. There is no evidence that high levels of polyandry are driven by direct benefits to females and the evidence that multiple paternity arises from indirect genetic benefits is weak. Instead, we argue that the most parsimonious explanation for patterns of multiple paternity is that it represents the combined effect of mate-encounter frequency and conflict over mating rates between males and females driven by large male benefits and relatively small female costs, with only weak selection via indirect benefits. A crucial step for researchers is to move from correlative approaches to experimental tests of assumptions and predictions of theory under natural settings, using a combination of molecular techniques and behavioural observations. [source] Sentenced without trial: reviling and revamping the Resource Dispersion HypothesisOIKOS, Issue 2 2003Dominic D. P. Johnson The resource dispersion hypothesis (RDH) offers a predictive model for how, in heterogeneous environments, some animals may form groups even without any direct benefits from doing so. Revilla (2003) levels a number of criticisms at the RDH, all of which we feel can be easily clarified or resolved (we address them in the order they appear in his critique). We argue that the RDH, despite its long history and despite our own efforts, still lacks convincing evidence to reject it. On the contrary, we see it as having weathered its critics very well. While there is steadily accumulating evidence in support of the RDH, there are very few empirical tests that provide decent evidence against it. [source] |
