Differentiating Features (differentiating + feature)
Selected AbstractsCreative Leadership Processes in Project Team Development: An Alternative to Tuckman's Stage ModelBRITISH JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, Issue 4 2000Tudor Rickards We propose that theories of project team development and of creativity can be integrated into a new conceptual framework. The framework proposes two structural barriers that bear on team performance, and modifies the well-established team development model of Tuckman. Creative leadership is suggested as an important means of breaching the barriers. Its differentiating feature seems to be its effectiveness in establishing protocols that sustain the creative efforts of team members. We have designated the protocols ,benign structures'. Empirical evidence is provided from a range of studies of project teams in industrial settings. Multinucleated giant cell histiocytes, often with peripheral nuclei (Langhans' cells), may be identified. Acid-fast bacilli on smear or positive urine cultures confirm the diagnosis. Similar findings can also be seen in patients treated with Bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG) for transitional cell carcinoma or after bladder surgery. Here, we present two cases showing epithelioid cell granulomas and multinucleated giant cells on urine cytology, and discuss the differentiating features on cytomorphology and their therapeutic implications. The average time to diagnosis varies but is frequently as long as 3 to 6 years. Skin biopsies frequently reveal non-specific features of several dermatoses; thus, histologic evaluation of the disease is also challenging. Importantly, various significant and/or benign conditions may mimic MF histologically and result in a misdiagnosis of MF. Here we review the reported histologic mimickers of MF and discuss both similar and differentiating features of each, in order to aid in more accurate interpretation of diagnostically challenging skin biopsies. Clinicopathologic correlation is ultimately essential to make accurate diagnosis of MF and its histologic mimickers. Pollard Background: Pituitary tumors in dogs can be adenomas, invasive adenomas, or adenocarcinomas. In people, invasive adenomas and pituitary adenocarcinomas carry a worse prognosis than adenomas. Hypothesis/Objective: To identify differentiating features on cross-sectional imaging in dogs with pituitary adenomas, invasive adenomas, and adenocarcinomas. Animals: Thirty-three dogs that had computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed and a necropsy diagnosis of pituitary adenoma (n= 20), invasive adenoma (n= 11), or adenocarcinoma (n= 2). Methods: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for signalment, history, and diagnosis. CT and MR images were reviewed for characteristics of pituitary tumors. Results: Mean (± standard deviation) age for dogs with pituitary adenomas (10.6 ± 2.9 years) was greater than that of those with invasive adenomas (8.3 ± 2.7 years, P= .04). Eighteen out of 20 (90%) dogs with adenomas had contrast-enhancing masses. Thirteen out of 20 (65%) had homogeneous enhancement. Mean adenoma height was 1.2 ± 0.7 cm. Eight out of 20 (40%) adenomas were round and 8/20 (40%) compressed surrounding brain. Eleven out of 11 dogs (100%) with invasive adenomas had contrast-enhancing masses. Seven out of 11 (64%) masses were homogeneous. Mean invasive adenoma height was 1.8 ± 0.7 cm, which was significantly greater than adenomas (P= .03). Mass shape varied from round to oval to irregular. Six out of 11 (55%) masses compressed surrounding brain. Clinical and imaging features were variable for 2 dogs with adenocarcinomas. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Invasive adenoma should be suspected if a dog with a pituitary tumor is <7.7 years of age and has a mass >1.9 cm in vertical height. Adenocarcinomas are uncommon and metastatic lesions were not seen with imaging. It has recognised several new entities, many of which are rare. Intra-operative diagnosis of these tumours can be difficult with the freezing artefact that often cripples brain frozen sections. In many instances intra-operative smears are extremely useful adjuvants in neuropathological diagnosis. In this article, we describe intra-operative smear findings of three of the newly described tumours. Their characteristic cytologic features are illustrated along with differentiating features from the common mimics, together with a general approach to brain smears. The entities we discuss here are papillary glioneuronal tumour, papillary tumour of the pineal region and angiocentric glioma. All three tumours share at least focal pseudo-papillary/vasculocentric architecture. Smears from papillary glioneuronal tumour demonstrated dual population of cells in a neuropil background, whereas papillary tumour of the pineal region and angiocentric glioma comprise a single population of cells. These two tumours can further be differentiated based on their cell morphology and background. Aim., To present integrated analyses of baseline characteristics and treatment outcomes from phase 3 dapoxetine trials in men with acquired or lifelong PE and mild or no ED. Methods., Data were analyzed from two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 clinical trials (International and Asia-Pacific) that evaluated efficacy and safety of dapoxetine (30 mg or 60 mg as needed [PRN]) in patients with PE. Men were ,18 years, in a stable monogamous relationship for ,6 months, met DSM-IV-TR criteria for PE for ,6 months, had an International Index of Erectile Function EF domain score ,21, and had an intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) ,2 minutes in ,75% of intercourse episodes. Main Outcome Measures., Demographics, sexual history, and PE symptomatology at baseline, and mean IELT and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) at study end (week 12), were analyzed for men with acquired or lifelong PE and mild or no ED (EF score 21,25 vs. ,26). Results., Baseline characteristics except duration of PE were similar in men with acquired and lifelong PE, with no other differentiating features by ED status. Dapoxetine treatment improved significantly mean IELT (arithmetic and geometric) and PRO responses (perceived control over ejaculation, satisfaction with sexual intercourse, ejaculation-related personal distress, and interpersonal difficulty) for acquired and lifelong subtypes, but presence of mild ED diminished PRO responsiveness in both subtypes, particularly those with lifelong PE. Conclusions., Baseline characteristics and treatment outcomes were generally similar in men with acquired and lifelong PE. The presence of mild ED appears to be associated with a more modest treatment response, irrespective of lifelong or acquired PE subtype. Aim., In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the disease in young men. Main Outcome Measures., The demographics, clinical features, and associated comorbidities of the patients with PD were retrospectively reviewed. Methods., The findings were compared between men with the disease who were under 40 years of age with those over 40 years. Statistical analyses were conducted to define differentiating features between these two groups. Results., Of the 296 patients, 32 were under the age of 40 years and 264 over 40 years. The mean duration of the disease was 2 ± 4 and 6 ± 8 months in the respective age groups. Fifty-six percent of the patients under the age of 40 years and 75% of the patients over this age presented with curvature (P < 0.01). Thirty-seven percent under 40 years and 12% men over 40 years had more than one plaque at presentation (P < 0.01). Dupuytren's contracture was seen only in patients over 40 years of age. Pain at presentation was found in 75% under the age of 40 years and in 65% over 40 years (P = 0.03). Trauma history was found in 18% under 40 years and in 5% over this age (P < 0.01). Statistical significant differences were found between the groups under and over the age of 40 years for hypertension (P < 0.01) and dyslipidemia (P < 0.01). Diabetes was noted in 50% of the patients under the age of 40 years and in 18% of the patients over this age (P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis of conditions associated in men with PD under 40 years of age showed statistical significant differences for diabetes (P = 0.015), presentation within 6 months (P = 0.004), and having multiple plaques (P = 0.008). Conclusions., Young men with PD are more likely to present at an earlier stage of the disease, to have diabetes, and to have more than one plaque at the time of presentation.
