Yang Abstract Well-faceted hexagonal ZnO nanorods have been synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method at relative low temperature (90°C) without any catalysts or templates. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods were grown in an aqueous solution that contained Zinc chloride (ZnCl2, Aldrich, purity 98%) and ammonia (25%). Most of the ZnO nanorods show the perfect hexagonal cross section and well-faceted top and side surfaces. The diameter of ZnO nanorods decreased with the reaction time prolonging. The samples have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurement. XRD pattern confirmed that the as-prepared ZnO was the single-phase wurtzite structure formation. SEM results showed that the samples were rod textures. The surface-related optical properties have been investigated by photoluminescence (PL) spectrum and Raman spectrum. Photoluminescence measurements showed each spectrum consists of a weak band ultraviolet (UV) band and a relatively broad visible light emission peak for the samples grown at different time. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] A catchment scale evaluation of the SIBERIA and CAESAR landscape evolution modelsEARTH SURFACE PROCESSES AND LANDFORMS, Issue 8 2010GR Hancock Abstract Landscape evolution models provide a way to determine erosion rates and landscape stability over times scales from tens to thousands of years. The SIBERIA and CAESAR landscape evolution models both have the capability to simulate catchment,wide erosion and deposition over these time scales. They are both cellular, operate over a digital elevation model of the landscape, and represent fluvial and slope processes. However, they were initially developed to solve research questions at different time and space scales and subsequently the perspective, detail and process representation vary considerably between the models. Notably, CAESAR simulates individual events with a greater emphasis on fluvial processes whereas SIBERIA averages erosion rates across annual time scales. This paper describes how both models are applied to Tin Camp Creek, Northern Territory, Australia, where soil erosion rates have been closely monitored over the last 10 years. Results simulating 10,000 years of erosion are similar, yet also pick up subtle differences that indicate the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two models. The results from both the SIBERIA and CAESAR models compare well with independent field data determined for the site over different time scales. Representative hillslope cross-sections are very similar between the models. Geomorphologically there was little difference between the modelled catchments after 1000 years but significant differences were revealed at longer simulation times. Importantly, both models show that they are sensitive to input parameters and that hydrology and erosion parameter derivation has long-term implications for sediment transport prediction. Therefore selection of input parameters is critical. This study also provides a good example of how different models may be better suited to different applications or research questions. This paper presents a survey of the state-of-the-art synchrotron-based techniques which are particularly well-suited for investigating materials properties. Complementary X-ray absorption techniques such as extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) are used to address the individual local atomic structure and magnetic moments in Fe,Cr model systems. The formation of atomic clusters/precipitates in such systems is also investigated by means of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM). Such advanced analytical techniques can not only offer valuable structural and magnetic information on such systems, they can also serve for validating computational calculations performed at different time and length scales which can help improve materials lifetime predictions. [source] Precipitation of lead,zinc ores in the Mississippi Valley-type deposit at Trčves, Cévennes region of southern FranceGEOFLUIDS (ELECTRONIC), Issue 1 2006D. LEACH Abstract The Trčves zinc,lead deposit is one of several Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposits in the Cévennes region of southern France. Fluid inclusion studies show that the ore was deposited at temperatures between approximately 80 and 150°C from a brine that derived its salinity mainly from the evaporation of seawater past halite saturation. Lead isotope studies suggest that the metals were extracted from local basement rocks. Sulfur isotope data and studies of organic matter indicate that the reduced sulfur in the ores was derived from the reduction of Mesozoic marine sulfate by thermochemical sulfate reduction or bacterially mediated processes at a different time or place from ore deposition. The large range of ,34S values determined for the minerals in the deposit (12.2,19.2, for barite, 3.8,13.8, for sphalerite and galena, and 8.7 to ,21.2, for pyrite), are best explained by the mixing of fluids containing different sources of sulfur. Geochemical reaction path calculations, based on quantitative fluid inclusion data and constrained by field observations, were used to evaluate possible precipitation mechanisms. The most important precipitation mechanism was probably the mixing of fluids containing different metal and reduced sulfur contents. Cooling, dilution, and changes in pH of the ore fluid probably played a minor role in the precipitation of ores. The optimum results that produced the most metal sulfide deposition with the least amount of fluid was the mixing of a fluid containing low amounts of reduced sulfur with a sulfur-rich, metal poor fluid. In this scenario, large amounts of sphalerite and galena are precipitated, together with smaller quantities of pyrite precipitated and dolomite dissolved. The relative amounts of metal precipitated and dolomite dissolved in this scenario agree with field observations that show only minor dolomite dissolution during ore deposition. The modeling results demonstrate the important control of the reduced sulfur concentration on the Zn and Pb transport capacity of the ore fluid and the volumes of fluid required to form the deposit. The studies of the Trčves ores provide insights into the ore-forming processes of a typical MVT deposit in the Cévennes region. However, the extent to which these processes can be extrapolated to other MVT deposits in the Cévennes region is problematic. Nevertheless, the evidence for the extensive migration of fluids in the basement and sedimentary cover rocks in the Cévennes region suggests that the ore forming processes for the Trčves deposit must be considered equally viable possibilities for the numerous fault-controlled and mineralogically similar MVT deposits in the Cévennes region. [source] SEASONAL PERFORMANCE AFFECTING POPULATION DYNAMICS OF CITRUS RED MITE, FANONYCHUS CITRI (MCGREGOR) (ACARI: TETRANYCHIDAE), ON PEARINSECT SCIENCE, Issue 1 2002ZHENG Bo-yi Abstract The population of the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor), does not increase on pear from spring to mid-summer but thereafter increases abruptly. To elucidate this phenomenon, we compared the performance of the mites on pear leaves with that on citrus leaves, at different time throughout the pear-growing season. No significant difference was detected between the oviposition rate on pear and that on citrus throughout the season. However, the survival rate of ovipositing females that had fed on pear and the hatch rate of eggs laid by those females were significantly lower than those for females that had fed on citrus, until August. However, no significant difference was observed thereafter. The results showed that the decline of the population of citrus red mite before autumn is due to the high mortality of adult females that had fed on pear leaves and the low hatch rate of the eggs produced by those females. Frigione The effects of room temperature aging on the subsequent polymerization kinetics of a bismaleimide (BMI) matrix prepreg, for high performance composites, have been characterized by different time and storage conditions. The study has focused on the stability of BMI matrix carbon fiber prepregs, when exposed to controlled environmental conditions before being used in composite manufacturing. The effects of aging on glass transition temperature, reactivity, and processability have been investigated by calorimetry through dynamic, isothermal, and cure-simulating tests. A theoretical kinetic model for epoxy matrix prepregs, developed in previous studies, has been applied to the polymerization of both aged and unaged BMI matrix. The model is able to satisfactorily describe the effect of processing variables such as temperature and degree of reaction during the curing of the composite under different conditions (curing temperature and heating rate). The effects of diffusion-controlled phenomena on the reaction kinetics, associated with changes in glass transition temperature as a function of the degree of polymerization and cross-linking, have been taken into account in the formulation of an nth-order kinetic model. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BELL Mass loss of precooked tuna muscle during retorting and storage in cans impacts cannery yield and throughput. Changes in moisture content and mass of frozen, thawed, precooked tuna muscle chunks, canned in water, were determined after retorting and through five weeks of subsequent storage. Canned tuna pieces were retorted to equivalent lethality (Fo -value of four) for different time and temperature processes. Retorting at a lower temperature, longer time resulted in less mass loss than higher temperature, shorter time processes. Canned storage of up to five weeks had no effect on muscle mass or moisture content. [source] SENSORY AND INSTRUMENTAL TEXTURE MEASUREMENT OF THERMALLY PROCESSED RICEJOURNAL OF SENSORY STUDIES, Issue 5 2005M. PRAKASH ABSTRACT Rice is the staple food of many countries and its sensory quality is of great concern to the consumers. Its preservation through thermal processing in retort pouches for ready-to-eat purposes was carried out by different time,temperature schedules with and without oil to achieve a minimum Foof 3 min. The sensory analysis of the cooked rice carried out using quantitative descriptive analysis showed that a process schedule of 118C, 8 min was optimum to have the optimal sensory characteristics. The same rice samples were subjected to instrumental texture measurements by texture analyzer using a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/s with 90% compression for hardness and stickiness parameters. The instrumental hardness showed high correlation with sensory hardness, chewiness and overall quality (r = 0.72; r = 0.73; r = 0.79) and a negative correlation with sensory stickiness (r = ,0.75). Applying principal component analysis, thermally processed rice samples were further classified based on the sensory and instrumental texture attributes. [source] Extraction of favism-inducing agents from whole seeds of faba bean (Vicia faba L var major)JOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 6 2005Jalal Jamalian Abstract The objective of the present study was to establish a suitable procedure by which favism-inducing glycosides vicine and convicine could be completely removed from whole seeds of faba beans without distorting their shape or reducing their nutritive value. Detoxification procedures carried out were extraction by water or, 10 g l,1 acid solutions (acetic, citric and phosphoric acid) using stepwise or continuous soaking procedures. Three cultivars of the beans were used in the study. In the stepwise soaking procedures, the seeds were soaked in either water or acid solution at 40 °C for different periods while in the continuous flow techniques, the solutions were constantly passed through a seed reservoir under different time,temperature,flow rate conditions. Extraction of vicine and convicine increased with increasing temperature and period of soaking and/or continuous flow of soaking solutions. Neither stepwise soaking nor autoclaving could effectively remove the favism factors from the whole seeds. The best results were obtained with continuous flow soaking in tap water, giving vicine- and convicine-free seeds. The protein contents of treated seeds were only slightly affected and their physical structure remained intact. Thus, it was concluded that the latter procedure was the method of choice for detoxification of dry whole seeds. RENNE In this article, I examine West African foods sold mainly in specialty grocery stores, focusing on how technologies used in food production in West Africa are referenced in the brand names and packaging of processed African foods sold in the United States. Through their association with "timeless" West African food-processing techniques, such foods evoke memories of childhood and home. Yet the transformation of West African foods through new technologies of processing, packaging, and branding reflects different time and health concerns of West African immigrants living in the United States. Through their purchase of time-saving, mass-produced, and hygienically packaged foodstuffs, which are ideologically similar to but technologically very different from the production processes and cooking in Africa, West Africans in the United States use food to maintain social relations with their particular families, hometown associations, and religious groups, while also constituting national, regional, and global connections through the reinvention of food traditions. Its kernel idea is to organize learning materials in a concept space rather than in a page space. The tailored content and flexible structure of the e-courses can be dynamically formed to cater for different learners with different backgrounds, capabilities and expectations, at different times and venues. The active e-course can also assess learners' learning performances and give appropriate suggestions to guide them in further learning. An authoring tool for constructing course ontology and a system prototype have been developed to support an active e-course, enabling a learner-centred, highly interactive and adaptive learning approach. [source] Variation in Pesticide Tolerance of Tadpoles among and within Species of Ranidae and Patterns of Amphibian DeclineCONSERVATION BIOLOGY, Issue 5 2000Christine M. Bridges Because variability exists among organisms in their sensitivity to environmental stressors, it is important to determine the degree of this variation when undertaking conservation efforts. We conducted both lethal (time-to-death) and sublethal (activity change) assays to determine the degree of variation in the sensitivity of tadpoles to a pesticide, carbaryl, at three hierarchical levels: among ranid species, among several populations of a single ranid species ( Rana sphenocephala), and within populations of R. sphenocephala. We observed significant variation in time to death among the nine ranid species and among the 10 R. sphenocephala populations we tested. Four out of eight R. sphenocephala populations exhibited significantly different times to death among families. The magnitude of the activity change in response to exposure to sublethal carbaryl levels was significantly different among species and within R. sphenocephala populations. Chemical contamination, at lethal or sublethal levels, can alter natural regulatory processes such as juvenile recruitment in amphibian populations and should be considered a contributing cause of declines in amphibian populations. Resumen: Existe una variación significativa entre y dentro de especies de anfibios con respecto a los reportes de disminuciones poblacionales; las especies en disminución son frecuentemente encontradas en ambientes que son fisiográficamente similares a ambientes donde las mismas especies están prosperando. Debido a que la variabilidad existe entre organismos en lo referente a su sensibilidad a estresores ambientales, es importante determinar el grado de esta variación cuando se lleven a cabo esfuerzos de conservación. Nosotros llevamos a cabo ensayos tanto letales (tiempo de muerte) como subletales (cambios de actividad) para determinar el grado de variación en la sensibilidad de renacuajos a un pesticida, carbaryl, en tres niveles jerárquicos: entre especies de ránidos, entre diversas poblaciones de una sola especie de ránido ( Rana sphenocephala) y dentro de poblaciones de R. sphenocephala. Observamos diferencias significativas en tiempo de muerte entre las nueve especies de ránidos y entre las 10 poblaciones de R. sphenocephala evaluadas. Cuatro de ocho poblaciones de R. sphenocephala exhibieron tiempos de muerte significativamente diferentes entre familias. Leret Abstract Aim:, This study examines the effect of reducing the corticosterone levels of gestating rat dams on the postnatal development and maturation of monoaminergic systems in their offspring's brains. Methods:, Metyrapone, an inhibitor of CORT synthesis, was administered to pregnant rats from E0 to E17 of gestation. Monoamine concentrations were determined in male and female offspring at postnatal days (PN) 23 and 90 in the hippocampus, hypothalamus and striatum. Results:, Reducing maternal corticosterone (mCORT) during gestation led to alterations in dopamine and serotonin levels in all three brain areas studied at PN 23. Alterations persisted until at least PN 90 in the serotonergic systems; the dopamine content of the hippocampus also remained modified. Reduced mCORT during gestation also led to alterations in the development and maturation of the hypothalamic noradrenergic systems. Sexually dimorphic responses were observed in all these monoaminergic systems at different times. Conclusion:, These results suggest that while they are still developing, brain monoaminergic systems are particularly sensitive to epigenetic influences. An adequate foetal level of CORT is required for the normal ontogeny of brain monoaminergic systems. The present data also provide that during the critical period of brain development, maternal CORT plays an important role in the sexual differentiation of monoaminergic systems, with particular influence on brain serotonergic neurones. [source] Study of the MR relaxation of microglia cells labeled with Gd-DTPA-bearing nanoparticlesCONTRAST MEDIA & MOLECULAR IMAGING, Issue 3 2009Emeline Julie Ribot Abstract Therapies involving cells as vehicles need to visualize in situ the trafficking of the cells concerned. This cellular imaging can be driven by cell contrast agent-based nanoparticle internalization and non-invasive MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) detection. Here, microglial cells, that would transport a suicide gene to a glioma, were incubated for different times, with various concentrations of silica nanoparticles on which numerous Gd-DTPA were grafted. The goal of this study was to investigate the repartition of cell-associated particles. MRI was used to quantitatively follow the particle uptake process. Fluorescence microscopy images showed that, although most of the nanoparticles were internalized, some remained adsorbed on the extracellular membrane surface. The cells were then submitted to various treatments: glycine to release bound nanoparticles and/or ultrasound to destroy the cell membranes. The R1 relaxation rates were measured at 4.7 T. R1 was maximal for 4,h of incubation, decreased after 8,h and remained stable for the 24 following hours. The magnetic resonance signal of ultrasonicated and glycine-treated cells made it possible to quantify the loss of bound nanoparticles after 8,h. Nevertheless, this release did not prevent cell detection since the internalized nanoparticles are enough concentrated to visualize the labeled cells even after 4 days of cell growth. These results highlight the compartmentalization of nanoparticles in microglia and the evolution of the MR signal of the labeled cells. This study could be of importance to interpret in vivo the MR signal changes that could occur after administration of such nanoparticle-labeled cells in therapeutic strategies. Armand Abstract Aim:, The aim of this report is to show that eccentric exercise under well-controlled conditions is an alternative model, to chemical and mechanical analyses, and analyse the process of degeneration/regeneration in mouse soleus. Methods:, For this, mice were submitted to a single bout of eccentric exercise on a treadmill down a 14° decline for 150 min and the soleus muscle was analysed at different times following exercise by histology and in situ hybridization in comparison with cardiotoxin-injured muscles. Results:, We analyse the regenerative process by detection of the accumulation of transcripts coding for the two myogenic regulatory factors, Myf-5 and MyoD, which are good markers of the activated satellite cells. From 24 h post-exercise (P-E), clusters of mononucleated Myf-5/MyoD-positive cells were detected. Their number increased up to 96 h P-E when young MyoD-positive myotubes with central nuclei began to appear. From 96 to 168 h P-E the number of myotubes increased, about 10-fold, the new myotubes representing 58% of the muscle cells (168 h P-E). Conclusion:, These results show that this protocol of eccentric exercise is able to induce a drastic degeneration/regeneration process in the soleus muscle. This offers the opportunity to perform biochemical and molecular analyses of a process of regeneration without muscle environment defects. The advantages of this model are discussed in the context of fundamental and therapeutical perspectives. [source] Development of the corticospinal system and hand motor function: central conduction times and motor performance testsDEVELOPMENTAL MEDICINE & CHILD NEUROLOGY, Issue 4 2000U M Fietzek Maturation of the corticospinal (CS) tract and hand motor function provide paradigms for central nervous system development. In this study, involving 112 participants (aged from 0.2 to 30 years), we evaluated central motor conduction times (CMCT) obtained with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) during preinnervation conditions of facilitation and relaxation. Auditory reaction time, velocity of a ballistic movement of the arm, finger tapping, diadochokinesis, and fine motor visuomanual tracking were also examined. The maturation profiles for every parameter were calculated. CMCTs for the different preinnervation conditions reached adult values at different times and this could be explained by maturation of excitability at the cortical and spinal level. A stable phase for CMCTs and reaction time was reached during childhood. Parameters which measured motor speed and skill indicated that the development of these continued into adulthood. The maturation of the fast CS tract seems to be completed before the acquisition of the related motor performance has been accomplished. In conclusion, we could demonstrate that data from several neurophysiological methods can be combined and used to study the maturation of the function of the nervous system. This approach could allow appraisal of pathological conditions that show parallels with omissions or lack of developmental progress. [source] Seasonal changes in frequency tuning and temporal processing in single neurons in the frog auditory midbrainDEVELOPMENTAL NEUROBIOLOGY, Issue 1 2005Jozien BM Goense Abstract Frogs rely on acoustic signaling to detect, discriminate, and localize mates. In the temperate zone, reproduction occurs in the spring, when frogs emerge from hibernation and engage in acoustically guided behaviors. In response to the species mating call, males typically show evoked vocal responses or other territorial behaviors, and females show phonotactic responses. Because of their strong seasonal behavior, it is possible that the frog auditory system also displays seasonal variation, as evidenced in their vocal control system. This hypothesis was tested in male Northern leopard frogs by evaluating the response characteristics of single neurons in the torus semicircularis (TS; a homolog of the inferior colliculus) to a synthetic mating call at different times of the year. We found that TS neurons displayed a seasonal change in frequency tuning and temporal properties. Frequency tuning shifted from a predominance of TS units sensitive to intermediate frequencies (700,1200 Hz) in the winter, to low frequencies (100,600 Hz) in the summer. In winter and early spring, most TS neurons showed poor, or weak, time locking to the envelope of the amplitude-modulated synthetic call, whereas in late spring and early summer the majority of TS neurons showed robust time-locked responses. Neurobiol, 2005 [source] Regional assessment of the impact of climatic change on the distribution of a tropical conifer in the lowlands of South AmericaDIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTIONS, Issue 6 2007Marie-Pierre Ledru Abstract For decades, palynologists working in tropical South America are using the genus Podocarpus as a climate indicator although without referring to any modern data concerning its distribution and limiting factors. With the aim to characterize the modern and past distribution of the southern conifer Podocarpus in Brazil and to obtain new information on the distribution of the Atlantic rainforest during the Quaternary, we examined herbarium data to locate the populations of three Brazilian endemic Podocarpus species: P. sellowii, P. lambertii, and P. brasiliensis, and extracted DNA from fresh leaves from 26 populations. Our conclusions are drawn in the light of the combination of these three disciplines: botany, palynology, and genetics. We find that the modern distribution of endemic Podocarpus populations shows that they are widely dispersed in eastern Brazil, from north to south and reveals that the expansion of Podocarpus recorded in single Amazonian pollen records may have come from either western or eastern populations. Genetic analysis enabled us to delimit regional expansion: between 5° and 15° S grouping northern and central populations of P. sellowii expanded c. 16,000 years ago; between 15° and 23° S populations of either P. lambertii or sellowii expanded at different times since at least the last glaciation; and between 23° and 30° S, P. lambertii appeared during the recent expansion of the Araucaria forest. The combination of botany, pollen, and molecular analysis proved to be a rapid tool for inferring distribution borders for sparse populations and their regional evolution within tropical ecosystems. Today the refugia of rainforest communities we identified are crucial hotspots to allow the Atlantic forest to survive under unfavourable climatic conditions and, as such, offer the only possible opportunity for this type of forest to expand in the event of a future climate change. Lobo ABSTRACT Different distribution maps can be obtained for the same species if localities where species are present are mapped at different times. We analysed the accumulation of information over time for a group of dung beetle species in the Iberian Peninsula. To do this, we used all available information about the distribution of the group as well as data on selected species to examine if the process of discovery of species distribution has occurred in a climatically or spatially structured fashion. Our results show the existence of a well-defined pattern of temporal growth in distributional information; due to this, the date of capture of each specimen can be explained by the environmental and spatial variables associated to the collection sites. We hypothesize that such temporal biases could be the rule rather than the exception in most distributional data. These biases could affect the weighting of environmental factors that influence species distributions, as well as the accuracy of predictive distribution models. Systematic surveys should be a priority for the description of species geographical ranges in order to make robust predictions about the consequences of habitat and climate change for their persistence and conservation. [source] Distribution, abundance, and individual strategies: a multi-scale analysis of dasyurid marsupials in arid central AustraliaECOGRAPHY, Issue 3 2006Adele S. Haythornthwaite We investigated the effects of different environmental factors on the distribution and abundance of 6 species of dasyurid marsupials using a multiple-scale analysis. Data collected in the spinifex dunefields of the Simpson Desert, Australia, were analysed at 3 spatial scales spanning more than 5 orders of magnitude: "metasite" (covering an area of 1000,2000 km2), site (2,12 km2) and grid (0.01 km2). Temporal variability was also investigated, using data collected in March, April, and May in 4 consecutive years from 1997 to 2000. Both abiotic and biotic factors influenced the capture rates of different species at different times and spatial scales. At the coarsest spatial scale, Dasycercus cristicauda (mulgara) was consistently limited in its distribution by the intensity of rainfall, probably as an indirect result of increased grazing pressure from pastoral activity and a higher density of feral predators in high rainfall areas. However, at the finest spatial scale, this partly carnivorous species was scarce in areas of dense spinifex, perhaps because such habitats yield lowest returns during foraging, and was more common in areas where small invertebrate prey were abundant. Factors affecting the distribution of the most abundant dasyurid species in the study area, Sminthopsis youngsoni (lesser hairy-footed dunnart), could not be identified at any scale; we conclude that this reflects the opportunistic foraging strategies and flexible habitat requirements of this insectivorous species. Both Ningaui ridei (wongai ningaui) and Sminthopsis hirtipes (hairy-footed dunnart) were less abundant throughout the study region. For N. ridei, a spinifex specialist, predictors of occurrence could be identified only at the finest scale of analysis; at the grid level, a close positive association was detected in 2 of the 4 study years between capture rate and spinifex cover. For S. hirtipes, all 3 levels of spatial analysis revealed a negative association between capture rate and both rainfall and spinifex density. For the rarely-caught S. crassicaudata (fat-tailed dunnart) and Planigale tenuirostris (narrow-nosed planigale), no clear results were obtained at any spatial scale, and we interpret this to indicate that the study region represents sub-optimal habitat for these species. Given that different factors affected the distribution and abundance of dasyurids at different spatial scales over time, we conclude that a multiple-scale approach to population and community analysis is vital to accurately identify which environmental processes shape population and community dynamics. Understanding the interplay between regional and local processes will be crucial for management of existing species populations and for prediction of their distributions and abundances in future. YAKU Abstract 1.,The common blossom thrips, Frankliniella schultzei, is a polyphagous anthophilic species that colonises a wide range of host-plant species across different plant taxa. The environmental cues used by these polyphagous insects to recognise and locate host plants are not known. We therefore determined if colour is an important environmental signal used by F. schultzei to recognise flowers of eight of its more significant host-plant species. 2.,The effect of flower colour on the colonisation of different host plant species by F. schultzei was investigated by collecting and analysing the following: (a) numbers of thrips from different heights and aspects of the primary host plant Malvaviscus arboreus, (b) thrips distribution within flowers of Hibiscus rosasinensis, (c) colour reflectance from flowers of eight different host-plant species, and (d) reflectance from different coloured sticky traps and the number of thrips trapped on them at different times of the day and on different dates. 3.,The results indicate that: (a) the thrips (both sexes) concentrate towards the top of the primary host plant M. arboreus and are not distributed differentially according to sunny or shady aspect of the plant, (b) the number of female thrips on H. rosasinensis was higher in anthers compared to petals (corolla) and the basal parts of the flower, and males were as numerous on the petals as were females, and (c) there is a common floral reflectance pattern (but with different intensities) across the eight host plant species, mainly in the red part of the spectrum (600,700 nm). 4.,Results of colour sticky trapping show that red attracts more female thrips compared to any other colour and that most were caught between 09.00 and 11.00 hours. By contrast, more male thrips were trapped between 07.00 and 09.00 hours. Males were more evenly distributed across the different colours but the highest numbers were associated with the yellow traps. 5.,The higher densities of thrips at the top of their host plant may be related to the early morning (07.00,11.00 hours) activity of the thrips, when the top portions of the plant are more exposed to sunlight. The sex-related distributions of F. schultzei thrips across time, coloured sticky traps, and various parts of the flowers seem to be related to mating swarm formation by the males, on the one hand, and the relative frequency and intensity of the use of M. arboreus by the females, on the other, as a feeding and oviposition site. Frankliniella schultzei females respond more strongly to red than to any other colours, so it is predicted that the spectral properties of colour recognition by this species will correlate with the predominant red reflectance of its primary host, M. arboreus, and that there may well be a sex-related difference in colour recognition within this species. Ratikainen Abstract Most organisms live in changing environments or do not use the same resources at different stages of their lives or in different seasons. As a result, density dependence will affect populations differently at different times. Such sequential density dependence generates markedly different population responses compared to the unrealistic assumption that all events occur simultaneously. Various field studies have also shown that the conditions that individuals experience during one period can influence success and per capita vital rates during the following period. These carry-over effects further complicate any general principles and increase the diversity of possible population dynamics. In this review, we describe how studies of sequential density dependence have diverged in directions that are both taxon-specific and have non-overlapping terminology, despite very similar underlying problems. By exploring and highlighting these similarities, we aim to improve communication between fields, clarify common misunderstandings, and provide a framework for improving conservation and management practices, including sustainable harvesting theory. [source] Do dams increase genetic diversity in brown trout (Salmo trutta)?ECOLOGY OF FRESHWATER FISH, Issue 4 2006Microgeographic differentiation in a fragmented river Abstract , Local genetic differentiation may potentially arise in recently fragmented populations. Brown trout is a polytypic species exhibiting substantial genetic differentiation, which may evolve in few generations. Movement (semi-)barriers in rivers may cause fragmentation, isolation and genetic differentiation in fish. In the Mĺna River (28 km) flowing from the alpine Lake Mřsvatn to the boreal Lake Tinnsjř, construction of four hydropower dams during the period 1906,1957 have fragmented the previously (since last Ice Age) continuous wild resident brown trout population. Samples from the two lakes (N = 40) and six sites in the river (N = 30) isolated at different times were analysed at nine microsatellite loci. All populations showed substantial genetic variation (mean number of alleles per locus 5.3,8.9, observed heterozygosity 0.57,0.65 per population, overall Fst = 0.032). Pairwise multilocus Fst estimates indicated no significant differentiation between populations in the two lakes, and no or little differentiation in the lower river (Fst = 0.0035,0.0091). The microgeographic differentiation among wild resident trout at these sites was less than expected based on similar previous studies. However, results from the upper river, in particular the site immediately below the Lake Mřsvatn outlet and dam, indicated isolation (Fst > 0.035). Calculation of genetic distances and assignment tests corroborated these results, as did a significant correlation between years of isolation (since dam construction) and Fst. The population structuring is most likely a result of fragmentation by dams, which has increased overall genetic diversity. This increased local differentiation may be caused by natural selection, but more likely by genetic drift in small, recently fragmented populations. Increased local genetic diversity by genetic drift does not justify conservation measures aiming at preserving genetic diversity. [source] Macroeconomic News and the Euro/Dollar Exchange RateECONOMIC NOTES, Issue 3 2003Gabriele Galati This paper investigates to what extent daily movements in the euro/dollar rate were driven by news about the macroeconomic situation in the USA and the euro area during the first two years of EMU. We examine whether market participants reacted to news in different ways depending on whether the news came from the USA or from the euro area, and whether the news was good or bad. Furthermore, we investigate whether traders' reaction to news has changed over time. We find that macroeconomic news has a statistically significant correlation with daily movements of the euro against the dollar. However, this relationship exhibits considerable time variation. There are indications of asymmetric response, but to different extents at different times. Our results also provide evidence that the market seemed to ignore good news and remain fixated on bad news from the euro area, as often claimed in market commentaries, but only for some time. Finally, we find evidence that the impact of macroeconomic news on the euro/dollar rate was stronger when news switches from good to bad or vice versa. (J.E.L.: F31). In 0.10,mol,L,1 KNO3 (pH,3.20) solution, SeC yields a sensitive reduction peak at ,740,mV on (Se-Au)/GC electrode. The peak current has a linear relationship with the concentration of SeC in the range of 5.0×10,8,7.0×10,4,mol,L,1, and a 3, detection limit of SeC is 3.0×10,8,mol,L,1. The relative standard deviation of the reduction current at SeC concentration of 10,6,mol,L,1 is 3.88% (n=8) using the same electrode, and 4.19% when using three modified electrodes prepared at different times. The content of SeC in the selenium-enriched yeast and selenium-enriched tea is determined. The total selenium in ordinary or selenium-enriched tea is determined by DAN fluorescence method. The results indicate that in selenium-enriched yeast about 20% of total selenium is present as SeC and in selenium-enriched tea SeC is the major form of selenoamino acids. The total selenium content in selenium-enriched tea soup is 0.09,,gSe/g accounting by 7% compared with that in selenium-enriched tea. Hence, only a little amount of selenium is utilized by drinking tea, and most selenium still stay in tealeaf. Uncertainty are 22.4% and 16.1% for determination of SeC in selenium-enriched yeast and selenium-enriched tea by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) on (Se-Au)/GC electrode, respectively. Alessandrino Abstract Processing Silk Fibroin (SF) with electrospinning (ES) offers a very attractive opportunity for producing a variety of 2D and 3D matrices with great potential for tissue regeneration and repair due to the superior biocompatibility and mechanical properties of SF. Different combinations of ES parameters were explored to investigate the best experimental set-up related to the dimension and uniformity of the fibers in the electrospun silk fibroin (ES-SF) mats. Using SEM it was found that the ES-SF mats contain uniform fibers with a diameter in the nanometric range obtained by electrospinning a 7.5,% w/v SF solution in formic acid, with an electric field of 2.4,kV/cm and a spinneret-collector distance of 10,cm. FT-IR and DSC analyses were performed to investigate the structure of the ES-SF mats before and after immersion in methanol for different times (5, 10, and 15,min). The methanol treatment was able to promote the crystallization of SF by conformational transition of random coil and other poorly ordered conformations (turns and bends) to the ,-sheet structure. The degree of crystallinity was enhanced as shown by the trend of both the FT-IR crystallinity index and the melting/decomposition peak temperature (from DSC). To study the cytocompatibility of ES-SF mats, tests with L929 murine fibroblasts were carried out. Samples were seeded with the cells and incubated for 1, 3, and 7,days at 37,°C. At each time point, SEM investigations and Alamar blue tests were performed. The SEM images showed cell adhesion and proliferation just after 1,day and cell confluence at 7,days. Alamar blue test demonstrated that there were very low differences between cell viability on ES-SF mats and the tissue culture plastic control. [source] Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of encapsulated Escherichia coli isolated from blooms in two Australian lakesENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 5 2005Michelle L. Power Summary Escherichia coli has long been used as an indicator organism for water quality assessment. Recently there has been an accumulation of evidence that suggests some strains of this organism are able to proliferate in the environment, a characteristic that would detract from its utility as an indicator of faecal pollution. Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of E. coli isolated from blooms in two Australian lakes, separated by a distance of approximately 200 km, identified that the blooms were dominated by three E. coli strains. A major phenotypic similarity among the three bloom strains was the presence of a group 1 capsule. Genetic characterization of a conserved region of the cps gene cluster, which encodes group 1 capsules, identified a high degree of genetic variation within the bloom isolates. This differs from previously described encapsulated E. coli strains which are highly conserved at the cps locus. The phenotypic or genotypic profiles of the bloom strains were not identified in 435 E. coli strains isolated from vertebrates. The occurrence of these encapsulated strains suggests that some E. coli have evolved a free-living lifestyle and do not require a host in order to proliferate. The presence of the same three strains in bloom events in different geographical regions of a temperate climate, and at different times, indicates that free-living E. coli strains are able to persist in these water reservoirs. This study provides further evidence of circumstances where caution is required in using E. coli as an indicator organism for water quality. [source] Specificity in the settlement , modifying response of bacterial biofilms towards zoospores of the marine alga EnteromorphaENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 5 2003Pratixa Patel Summary Previous studies have shown that the rate of settlement of zoospores of the green alga Enteromorpha is stimulated by mixed microbial biofilms and that the number of zoospores settling is positively correlated with the number of bacteria in the biofilm. In the present study the specificity of this relationship has been investigated. Ninety-nine strains of marine bacteria were isolated from natural biofilms on rocks and the surface of Enteromorpha plants. Isolates were screened by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) to eliminate replicates and 16S rDNA sequencing identified a total of 37 unique strains. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the isolated bacterial strains belonged to three groups ,- Proteobacteria (28 strains), Cytophaga-Flavobacteria-Bacteroid (CFB) group (six strains) and ,- Proteobacteria (one strain). Two strains were unassigned, showing < 93% sequence similarity with the CFB group. The main genera of ,- Proteobacteria were Pseudoalteromonas (14 strains), Vibrio (five strains), Shewanella (five strains), Halomonas (three strains) and Pseudomonas (one strain). Spore settlement experiments were conducted on single-species biofilms, developed for different times on glass slides. The effect of correcting spore settlement values for biofilm density was evaluated. Results showed that the effect of bacterial strains on spore settlement was strain- but not taxon-specific and activity varied with the age of the biofilm. However, most of the strains belonging to genera Vibrio and Shewanella showed stimulation. Pseudoalteromonas strains showed a range of effects including settlement-inhibiting, paralysing and lysing activities. Spatial analysis of bacterial density in the presence and absence of spores revealed a range of different types of association between spores and bacteria. Overall, the spatial association between spores and bacteria appears to be independent of the overall quantitative influence of bacterial cells on spore settlement. [source] Effects of carbaryl on green frog (Rana clamitans) tadpoles: Timing of exposure versus multiple exposuresENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, Issue 11 2003Michelle D. Boone Abstract The majority of studies on pesticide impacts have evaluated the effects of single exposures. However, multiple exposures to a pesticide may be more prevalent. The objective of our study was to determine how multiple exposures versus single exposure at different times during development affected survival to metamorphosis, tadpole survival, tadpole mass, and tadpole developmental stage of green frog (Rana clamitans) tadpoles reared at low and high density in outdoor cattle tank ponds. Tadpoles were exposed to carbaryl zero, one, two, or three times at 14-d intervals. We applied single doses of carbaryl at one of three times, specifically during early, mid, or late development. Overall, we found that multiple exposures had a greater impact than single exposures during development. More individuals reached metamorphosis in ponds exposed to multiple doses of carbaryl compared with controls, indicating that the presence of carbaryl stimulated metamorphosis. The presence of carbaryl in the aquatic environment also resulted in more developed tadpoles compared with controls. Tadpoles in control ponds did not reach metamorphosis and were less developed than individuals exposed to carbaryl; this effect indicates that, under ideal conditions, green frogs could overwinter in ponds so that greater size could be attained before metamorphosis in the following spring or summer. Our study demonstrated the importance of including realistic application procedures when evaluating the effects of a pesticide and that multiple exposures to a short-lived pesticide are more likely to affect an amphibian population.
