Addressing the unanswered questions in global water policy: a methodology framework,

Demande et fourniture de l'eau et de la nourriture au niveau globale 1995,2025; modélisation globale; politique globale sur l'eau; projections 2025 Abstract Are the available water resources sufficient to produce food for the growing world population while at the same time meet increasing municipal, industrial and environmental requirements? Projections for the year 2025, presented by different research groups at the second World Water Forum in The Hague, show an increase in global agricultural water use ranging from 4 to 17%. Estimates for the growth of total withdrawals, including domestic and industrial sectors, vary from 22 to 32%. This range is the result of differences in model structure and assumptions. Although these analyses were instrumental in raising awareness concerning the extent of present and future water scarcity problems, they raise many questions, which remain largely unanswered. The questions relate to the impact of water- and food-related policies on global and regional water scarcity, food production, environment and livelihoods through the year 2025. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) embarked on a joint modeling exercise to address these questions. Les projections faites pour l'an 2025 par différents groupes de chercheurs lors du 2ème Forum Mondial de l'Eau à la Haye montrent une augmentation de 4 à 17% dans l'utilisation globale de l'eau agricole. Les estimations pour l'augmentation des prélèvements, y compris les secteurs domestiques et industriels, varient de 22 à 32%. Cette portée est le résultat des différences dans la structure des modèles. Quoique ces analyses permettent de sensibiliser le peuple sur les problèmes actuels et futurs de la disponibilité de l'eau, elles soulèvent de nombreuses questions qui restent non-résolues en bonne part. Ces questions concernent l'impact aux niveaux régionau et globau des politiques sur l'eau et la nourriture, la production alimentaire, l'environnement et les moyens d'existence et sources de revenu vers l'an 2025. L'Institut International de Recherche sur la Politique Alimentaire (IFPRI) et l'Institut International de Gestion d'Eau (IWMI) préparent conjointement un modèle pour traiter toutes ces questions non-résolues. Analytical epidemiology of periodontitis

Abstract Aims: To review the literature related to the analytical epidemiology of periodontitis generated over the past decade. This review does not deal with descriptive epidemiologic studies of the prevalence, extent and severity of periodontitis with respect to global geography, but focuses exclusively on analytical epidemiology issues, including the challenges posed by the use of different case definitions across studies, current theories and models of disease progression, and risk factors associated with the onset and progression of periodontitis. Methods: Relevant publications in the English language were identified after Medline and PubMed database searches. Findings and conclusions: There is a conspicuous lack of uniformity in the definition of periodontitis used in epidemiologic studies, and findings from different research groups are not readily interpretable. There is a lack of studies that specifically address the distinction between factors responsible for the onset of periodontitis versus those affecting its progression. Colonization by specific bacteria at high levels, smoking, and poorly controlled diabetes have been established as risk factors for periodontitis, while a number of putative factors, including specific gene polymorphisms, have been identified in association studies. There is a clear need for longitudinal prospective studies that address hypotheses emerging from the cross-sectional data and include established risk factors as covariates along with new exposures of interest. Intervention studies, fulfilling the "targeting" step of the risk assessment process, are particularly warranted. Obvious candidates in this context are studies of the efficacy of elimination of specific bacterial species and of smoking cessation interventions as an alternative to the traditional broad anti-plaque approach in the prevention and control of periodontitis. Ideally, such studies should have a randomized-controlled trial design. [source]


Alteration and role of heat shock proteins in acute pancreatitis

Many etiological factors are involved in the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis. The pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis has been attributed to such causes as trypsin autodigestion, pancreatic microcirculation malfunction, the calcium overload in pancreatic acinar cells, oxygen free radical injury, cytokine injury, and has been treated in detail in numerous reviews. More recently, heat shock proteins (HSP), particularly heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), have receive increasing attention as another possible factor in the pathogenesis and development of acute pancreatitis. This brief review aims to: (i) outline our current understanding of HSP and their role in pancreatitis; (ii) discuss the available evidences that suggest HSP's interplay between pancreas tissues and etiological agents; (iii) delineate the functional mechanisms of HSP proposed by different research groups, and offer new thinking in preventing and treating acute pancreatitis in general. Effects of assay conditions in life history experiments with Drosophila melanogaster

Selection experiments with Drosophila have revealed constraints on the simultaneous evolution of life history traits. However, the responses to selection reported by different research groups have not been consistent. Two possible reasons for these inconsistencies are (i) that different groups used different environments for their experiments and (ii) that the selection environments were not identical to the assay environments in which the life history traits were measured. We tested for the effect of the assay environment in life history experiments by measuring a set of Drosophila selection lines in laboratories working on life history evolution with Drosophila in Basel, Groningen, Irvine and London. The lines measured came from selection experiments from each of these laboratories. In each assay environment, we measured fecundity, longevity, development time and body size. The results show that fecundity measurements were particularly sensitive to the assay environment. Differences between assay and selection environment in the same laboratory or differences between assay environments between laboratories could have contributed to the differences in the published results. The other traits measured were less sensitive to the assay environment. However, for all traits there were cases where the measurements in one laboratory suggested that selection had an effect on the trait, whereas in other laboratories no such conclusion would have been drawn. Moreover, we provide good evidence for local adaptation in early fecundity for lines from two laboratories. [source]


Evaluation of statistical protocols for quality control of ecosystem carbon dioxide fluxes

Summary., The process of quality control of micrometeorological and carbon dioxide (CO2) flux data can be subjective and may lack repeatability, which would undermine the results of many studies. Multivariate statistical methods and time series analysis were used together and independently to detect and replace outliers in CO2 flux data derived from a Bowen ratio energy balance system. The results were compared with those produced by five experts who applied the current and potentially subjective protocol. All protocols were tested on the same set of three 5-day periods, when measurements were conducted in an abandoned agricultural field. The concordance of the protocols was evaluated by using the experts' opinion (mean ± 1.96 standard deviations) as a reference interval (the Bland,Altman method). Analysing the 15 days together, the statistical protocol that combined multivariate distance, multiple linear regression and time series analysis showed a concordance of 93% on a 20-min flux basis and 87% on a daily basis (only 2 days fell outside the reference interval), and the overall flux differed only by 1.7% (3.2 g CO2 m,2). An automated version of this or a similar statistical protocol could be used as a standard way of filling gaps and processing data from Bowen ratio energy balance and other techniques (e.g. eddy covariance). This would enforce objectivity in comparisons of CO2 flux data that are generated by different research groups and streamline the protocols for quality control. [source]


Unintentional dispersal of aquatic invertebrates via footwear and motor vehicles in a Mediterranean wetland area

Abstract 1.Several human activities, such as actions for nature conservation, research and recreational activities, are closely associated with inland aquatic habitats that are usually considered as isolated island habitats. In this study, the possibility of unintentional dispersal of aquatic invertebrates among water bodies via footwear and motor vehicles was investigated. 2.Mud samples collected from boots and from the tyres and wheel cases of cars used for field work by biologists (Camargue, Southern France) were hatched under laboratory conditions and also checked for the presence of unhatched propagules. A large number of organisms hatched and invertebrate propagules from a wide range of taxa were encountered (including Artemia, freshwater large branchiopods, Cladocera, Ostracoda, Rotifera, Turbellaria, Nematoda, etc.). The results also demonstrated that different research groups tend to transport the aquatic invertebrates typical for their respective study systems. 3.Human dispersal of aquatic invertebrates has been studied mainly on large continental scales, such as in the case of transoceanic transport via ballast water in ships. This study provides evidence that dispersal via footwear and motor vehicles may result in frequent dispersal of aquatic invertebrates on a local scale, and we presume also occasionally over longer distances. Given the rapid spread of invasive zooplankton species (e.g. Artemia franciscana encountered in this study), we promote caution and recommend cleaning before transport of any equipment which comes in contact with water or aquatic sediment.
