Selected AbstractsHalitosis among racially diverse populations: an updateINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF DENTAL HYGIENE, Issue 1 2008S Rayman Abstract:, The aim of this paper is to highlight the cultural perceptions of halitosis to dental professionals. Halitosis (oral malodour or bad breath) is caused mainly by tongue coating and periodontal disease. Bacterial metabolism of amino acids leads to metabolites including many compounds, such as indole, skatole and volatile sulphur compounds (VSC), hydrogen sulphide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulphide. They are claimed to be the main aetiological agents for halitosis. Gastrointestinal diseases are also generally believed to cause halitosis. In general, physicians and dentists are poorly informed about the causes and treatments for halitosis. The paper reviews the prevalence and distribution of halitosis, oral malodour, its aetiology, concepts of general and oral health and diseases and their perception among racially diverse population. Eating, smoking and drinking habits and understanding of halitosis as a social norm among different people has been highlighted. The treatment options have also been presented very briefly. A brief discussion about general importance within existing healthcare services has been highlighted. Oral malodour may rank only behind dental caries and periodontal disease as the cause of patient's visits to the dentist. It is a public social health problem. The perception of halitosis is different in culturally diverse populations. So the dental professionals should be aware of the cultural perceptions of halitosis among racially and culturally diverse populations. There is a need to integrate the cultural awareness and knowledge about halitosis among the dental professional for better understanding of halitosis to treat patients with the social dilemma of halitosis to improve the quality of life and well-being of individuals with the problem. It is concluded that dental professionals (especially dental hygienists) should be prepared to practice in a culturally diverse environment in a sensitive and appropriate manner, to deliver optimal oral health and hygiene care. [source] RAPID ADAPTIVE DIVERGENCE IN NEW WORLD ACHILLEA, AN AUTOPOLYPLOID COMPLEX OF ECOLOGICAL RACESEVOLUTION, Issue 3 2008Justin Ramsey Adaptive evolution is often associated with speciation. In plants, however, ecotypic differentiation is common within widespread species, suggesting that climatic and edaphic specialization can outpace cladogenesis and the evolution of postzygotic reproductive isolation. We used cpDNA sequence (5 noncoding regions, 3.5 kb) and amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs: 4 primer pairs, 1013 loci) to evaluate the history of ecological differentiation in the North American Achillea millefolium, an autopolyploid complex of "ecological races" exhibiting morphological, physiological, and life-history adaptations to diverse environments. Phylogenetic analyses reveal North American A. millefolium to be a monophyletic group distinct from its European and Asian relatives. Based on patterns of sequence divergence, as well as fossil and paleoecological data, colonization of North America appears to have occurred via the Bering Land Bridge during the Pleistocene (1.8 MYA to 11,500 years ago). Population genetic analyses indicate negligible structure within North American A. millefolium associated with varietal identity, geographic distribution, or ploidy level. North American populations, moreover, exhibit the signature of demographic expansion. These results affirm the "ecotype" concept of the North American Achillea advocated by classical research and demonstrate the rapid rate of ecological differentiation that sometimes occurs in plants. [source] Morphology and environment: geographic distribution, ecological disjunction, and morphological variation in Actinocephalus polyanthus (Bong.) Sano (Eriocaulaceae)FEDDES REPERTORIUM, Issue 7-8 2008M. Trovó Most Brazilian Eriocaulaceae have highly restricted geographic distributions. Actinocephalus polyanthus (Bong.) Sano is one of the few widely distributed species; furthermore this distribution includes an interesting ecological disjunction. Actinocephalus polyanthus occurs in montane areas from northern Minas Gerais to Paraná, as well as coastal sand dune habitats in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. In attempt to investigate whether there is any correlation between the ecological disjunction and the patterns of morphology exhibited by this species, eight populations were sampled covering the geographic distribution and the ecological disjunction. We used multivariate statistical methods (UPGMA, PCA and DF) to describe the morphology, and to verify its correlation with its distribution and habitat. We conclude that sand dune populations are morphologically different from the montane populations. The main difference in these plants is the robustness. The sand dune plants are significantly smaller than the plants from montane areas. We also verified that these populations have a morphological identity. The occurrence of this species in such diverse environments may reflect the morphological diversity of the various populations of the species, and may be the primary cause of the difference in these populations. Sano (Eriocaulaceae) Die meisten brasilianischen Eriocaulaceae haben nur eine eng begrenzte geographische Verbreitung. Actinocephalus polyanthus (Bong.) Sano ist eine der wenigen weit verbreiteten Arten. Diese Verbreitung zeigt eine interessante ökologische Disjunktion: Actinocephalus polyanthus tritt auf in den Gebirgsregionen vom nördlichen Minas Gerais bis Paraná und in den Küsten-Sanddünen in Santa Catarina und Rio Grande do Sul. Im Versuch, ob sich irgendeine Korrelation zwischen der ökologischen Disjunktion und der morphologischen Ausprägung bei dieser Art finden lässt, sammelten wir acht Populationen aus dem geographischen Verbreitungsgebiet und der ökologischen Disjunktion. Es wurden multivariate statistische Methoden (UPGMA, PCA und DF) eingesetzt um die Morphologie zu beschreiben und diese Korrelation zwischen Verbreitung und Habitat zu vergleichen. Wir konnten daraus schließen, dass die Populationen der Sanddünen sich von den montanen Populationen unterscheiden. Der Hauptunterschied liegt in der Robustheit der Pflanzen: die der Sanddünen sind deutlich kleiner als die aus den Bergregionen. Wir beobachteten auch, dass diese Populationen morphologisch identisch sind. Das Vorkommen dieser Art in so unterschiedlicher Umgebung widerspiegelt die morphologischen Unterschiede der verschiedenen Populationen der Art, und stellt vermutlich die Hauptursache für die Unterschiede zwischen den Populationen dar. [source] A Microarray Based Genomic Hybridization Method for Identification of New Genes in Plants: Case Analyses of Arabidopsis and OryzaJOURNAL OF INTEGRATIVE PLANT BIOLOGY, Issue 6 2007Chuanzhu Fan Abstract To systematically estimate the gene duplication events in closely related species, we have to use comparative genomic approaches, either through genomic sequence comparison or comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). Given the scarcity of complete genomic sequences of plant species, in the present study we adopted an array based CGH to investigate gene duplications in the genus Arabidopsis. Fragment genomic DNA from four species, namely Arabidopsis thaliana, A. lyrata subsp. lyrata, A. lyrata subsp. petraea, and A. halleri, was hybridized to Affymetrix (Santa Clara, CA, USA) tiling arrays that are designed from the genomic sequences of A. thaliana. Pairwise comparisons of signal intensity were made to infer the potential duplicated candidates along each phylo-genetic branch. Ninety-four potential candidates of gene duplication along the genus were identified. Among them, the majority (69 of 94) were A. thaliana lineage specific. This result indicates that the array based CGH approach may be used to identify candidates of duplication in other plant genera containing closely related species, such as Oryza, particularly for the AA genome species. We compared the degree of gene duplication through retrotransposon between O. sativa and A. thaliana and found a strikingly higher number of chimera retroposed genes in rice. The higher rate of gene duplication through retroposition and other mechanisms may indicate that the grass species is able to adapt to more diverse environments. [source] Thermoregulation of the Escherichia coli O157:H7 pO157 ecf operon and lipid A myristoyl transferase activity involves intrinsically curved DNAMOLECULAR MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 2 2004Jang W. Yoon Summary Escherichia coli O157:H7 survives in diverse environments from the ruminant gastrointestinal tract to cool nutrient-dilute water. We hypothesized that the gene regulation required for this flexibility includes intrinsically curved DNA that responds to environmental changes. Three intrinsically curved DNAs were cloned from the E. coli O157:H7 virulence plasmid (pO157), sequenced and designated Bent 1 through Bent 3 (BNT1, BNT2 and BNT3). Compared to BNT1 and BNT3, BNT2 had characteristics typical of intrinsically curved DNA including electrophoretic gel retardation at 4°C, six partially phased adenine:thymine tracts and transcriptional activation. BNT2::lacZ operon fusions showed that BNT2 activated transcription at 24°C compared to 37°C and was partially repressed by a bacterial nucleoid-associated protein H-NS. BNT2 regulated the E. coli attaching and effacing gene-positive conserved fragments 1,4 (ecf1,4) that are conserved in Shiga toxin-producing E. coli associated with human disease. Experimental analyses showed that ecf1,4 formed an operon. ecf1, 2 and 3 encoded putative proteins associated with bacterial surface polysaccharide biosynthesis and invasion and ecf4 complemented a chromosomal deletion of lpxM encoding lipid A myristoyl transferase. Mass spectrometric analysis of lipid A from ecf and lpxM single and double mutants showed that myristoylation was altered at lower temperature. [source] Synchrony between growth and reproductive patterns in human females: Early investment in growth among Pumé foragersAMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, Issue 2 2010Karen L. Kramer Abstract Life history is an important framework for understanding many aspects of ontogeny and reproduction relative to fitness outcomes. Because growth is a key influence on the timing of reproductive maturity and age at first birth is a critical demographic variable predicting lifetime fertility, it raises questions about the synchrony of growth and reproductive strategies. Among the Pumé, a group of South American foragers, young women give birth to their first child on average at age 15.5. Previous research showed that this early age at first birth maximizes surviving fertility under conditions of high infant mortality. In this study we evaluate Pumé growth data to test the expectation that if early reproduction is advantageous, then girls should have a developmental trajectory that best prepares them for young childbearing. Analyses show that comparatively Pumé girls invest in skeletal growth early, enter puberty having achieved a greater proportion of adult body size and grow at low velocities during adolescence. For early reproducers growing up in a food-limited environment, a precocious investment in growth is advantageous because juveniles have no chance of pregnancy and it occurs before the onset of the competing metabolic demands of final reproductive maturation and childbearing. Documenting growth patterns under preindustrial energetic and demographic conditions expands the range of developmental variation not otherwise captured by normative growth standards and contributes to research on human phenotypic plasticity in diverse environments. [source] Evolutionary diversification of opercle shape in Cook Inlet threespine sticklebackBIOLOGICAL JOURNAL OF THE LINNEAN SOCIETY, Issue 4 2009SAAD ARIF We investigated the evolution of a large facial bone, the opercle (OP), in lake populations of the threespine stickleback that were founded by anadromous ancestors, in Cook Inlet, Alaska. Recent studies characterized OP variation among marine and lake populations and mapped a quantitative trait locus with a large influence on OP shape. Using populations from diverse environments and independent evolutionary histories, we examined divergence of OP shape from that of the anadromous ancestor. We report preliminary evidence for divergence between benthic and generalist lake ecotypes, necessitating further investigation. Furthermore, rapid divergence of OP shape has occurred in a lake population that was founded by anadromous stickleback in the 1980s, which is consistent with divergence of other phenotypic traits and with OP diversification in other lake populations. By contrast, there has been limited evolution of OP shape in a second lake population that may have experienced a genetic bottleneck early in its history and lacks genetic variation for OP divergence. Taken together, the results obtained from these two populations are consistent with studies of other stickleback phenotypic traits that implicate ancestral variation in postglacial adaptive radiation of threespine stickleback in fresh water. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 97, 832,844. [source] Internal and External Corporate Governance: An Interface between an Organization and its EnvironmentBRITISH JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, Issue 3 2010Igor Filatotchev Most corporate governance research focuses on a universal link between corporate governance practices (e.g. shareholder activism, board independence) and performance outcomes, but neglects how interdependences between the organization and diverse environments lead to variations in the effectiveness of different corporate governance practices. This paper develops an organizational approach to corporate governance and focuses on two dominant streams that analyse internal and external governance mechanisms. First, we explore governance practices aimed at dealing with a complex set of problems internal to an organization, such as conflicts of interest between managers and shareholders, different types of shareholders, and block-holder opportunism. Second, we discuss the importance of formal and informal governance arrangements that organizations use in managing their relationships with external parties, such as alliance partners, overseas subsidiaries and network members. We argue that an integrated approach bringing these two streams together helps to develop a more holistic view on the effectiveness and efficiency of various corporate governance mechanisms, and suggests a number of avenues for future research. This paper also sets the scene for this thematic issue on corporate governance, scopes the field and introduces 11 papers which make significant contributions towards our understanding of corporate governance.
