Selected AbstractsImproving cold storage of subitaneous eggs of the copepod Acartia tonsa Dana from the Gulf of Mexico (Florida , USA)AQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 5 2007Guillaume Drillet Abstract Developing methods to store copepod eggs is necessary to increase the availability of copepods as a live food for the aquaculture industry and aquarium trade, and also to allow the exchange of copepods between researchers. The present study, evaluated the effect of glucose and two antibiotics (kanamycin sulphate and oxytetracycline HCl) on extending the shelf life of cold-stored subitaneous Acartia tonsa eggs. Also, egg development effects on the survival of the eggs were tested. Glucose did not have any significant effects on the survival of the eggs. However, the addition of antibiotics to the storage vials resulted in an increase of the survival of the eggs. In the best case, the shelf life of the eggs was almost doubled. After 7 days, the kanamycin+glucose treatment led to a hatching success of 86±1% of the hatchable eggs, while the untreated eggs presented a hatching success of 47±6%. However, long exposure to high concentrations of antibiotics was lethal to the copepod eggs. After more than 30 days of exposure to 100 mg L,1 of oxytetracycline, the survival of the eggs was lower than in the untreated samples. After 45 days, oxytetracycline-treated eggs (100 mg L,1) presented a hatching success of 4,5% while the non-stored eggs still had a hatching success of 9%, and the eggs treated with a lower concentration of antibiotics (10 mg L,1) showed a hatching success up to 21,23%. The size of the nauplii in all trials tended to decrease as the period of cold storage at 1°C increased. We consider that the use of antibiotics at the right dosage to be a means to increase the storage capacity of the Gulf of Mexico strain of A. tonsa eggs, which do not show any capacity to be stored for long periods of time, compared with some other strains. In addition eggs that were between 5 and 7 h old survived longer when stored in the cold than eggs, which were freshly spawned or closer to hatching. [source] Research Priorities for Surge CapacityACADEMIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE, Issue 11 2006Richard E. Rothman MD The 2006 Academic Emergency Medicine Consensus Conference discussed key concepts within the field of surge capacity. Within the breakout session on research priorities, experts in disaster medicine and other related fields used a structured nominal-group process to delineate five critical areas of research. Of the 14 potential areas of discovery identified by the group, the top five were the following: 1) defining criteria and methods for decision making regarding allocation of scarce resources, 2) determining effective triage protocols, 3) determining key decision makers for surge-capacity planning and means to evaluate response efficacy (e.g., incident command), 4) developing effective communication and information-sharing strategies (situational awareness) for public-health decision support, and 5) developing methods and evaluations for meeting workforce needs. Five working groups were formed to consider the above areas and to devise sample research questions that were refined further by the entire group of participants. [source] Assessment of endothelial function as a marker of cardiovascular risk in patients with rheumatoid arthritisINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RHEUMATIC DISEASES, Issue 3 2010Faisel KHAN Abstract The endothelium is a major regulator of cardiovascular function and maintains an atheroprotective role through several mechanisms, including vasodilatation, inhibition of platelet aggregation, having anticoagulant and profibrinolytic effects, and having an anti-inflammatory effect. Early changes in the normal functioning of the endothelium are key initiating factors in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. These changes are present well before the presentation of clinical symptoms. Thus, researchers have focused much attention on developing methods for reliable non-invasive testing of endothelial function to allow early detection and monitoring and progression of subclinical atherosclerosis. To date, there is a wide range of methods in use to assess endothelial function, each with its own advantages and limitations. Ideally, the tests should be non-invasive to allow repeated measurements and be applicable in normal healthy subjects and also in children. Given the wide range of regulatory functions of the endothelium, it is not surprising that there is no single measure of endothelial function that provides all the necessary information regarding vascular integrity in different vascular beds. Therefore, a combination of tests examining different components of the vascular system is more appropriate. Since patients with rheumatoid arthritis have increased mortality due to cardiovascular disease, assessment of endothelial function could prove to be useful tools in the identification and monitoring of cardiovascular risk. The purpose of this review is to give a brief overview of some of the commonly used techniques for assessment of endothelial function, and in particular on those that have been used in studies of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. [source] Effect of time of year on the development of immature stages of the Large Pine Weevil (Hylobius abietis L.) in stumps of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis Carr.) and influence of felling date on their growth, density and distributionJOURNAL OF APPLIED ENTOMOLOGY, Issue 3 2004R. Moore Abstract:, The time of year and time of felling of a commercial stand of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis Carr.) were both shown to influence the spatial distribution and development of the large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis (L). Stump and root systems were excavated over a 5-month period in 1997, between 18 and 27 months after felling, and all immature H. abietis removed. On a site with a 6-month spread of felling dates in 1995, mean larval weights in 1997 were higher in stumps from earlier fellings, but H. abietis numbers were higher in stumps from later fellings. This appeared to be due to the continued presence of older, heavier larvae, laid as eggs in 1995, in stumps from earlier fellings, combined with a greater concentration of oviposition having occurred in 1996 in the fresher stumps of later fellings. Pupae were first found in excavated stumps on 12 June 1997 and adults on 29 July 1997. Emergence of the ,new generation' of adult weevils commenced on 7 August 1997. On average, 25% of H. abietis adults emerged in autumn 1997, 41% in 1998 and 34% in 1999. First emergence (1997) was proportionally higher in the areas felled earlier in 1995 than those felled later that year. However, the opposite was found for third emergence (1999) where emergence was greater for stumps created later in 1995. Larger stumps contained greater densities of H. abietis. Total ,potential' emergence was estimated to be between 46400 and 170825 H. abietis/ha. However, emergence traps indicated that only 40,80% managed to complete their development and emerge successfully. It is suggested that within-season felling date may be one of the most important factors affecting larval development, distribution and abundance; as well as subsequent damage levels associated with adult feeding. Consequently, knowledge of felling date could be crucial to developing methods of integrated forest management for this major forest pest. Objectives, The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with doctors' workload in the ophthalmology consultation department of a university hospital, with a view to developing methods to improve the organization of hospital outpatient clinics. Methods, A 10-day cross-sectional survey was carried out in an ophthalmology outpatient clinic (in- and outpatient consultations, including emergencies) specializing in the uveitis care. Demographic and management data for each patient were collected on a structured form. The doctor's workload was assessed, using a scale taking into account the duration of the consultation and the number of diagnostic tests performed, as a function of management complexity. Results, Of the 861 consultations studied, 39.7% were highly complex. The level of complexity of consultations was correlated with the type of referral (phi = 0.602), consultation duration (phi = 0.545), the number of consultations in the previous year (phi = 0.499), and the number of diagnostic tests performed (phi = 0.445). Consultations were longer and diagnostic tests were more frequently performed if patients had been referred by an ophthalmologist, consulted a faculty doctor or a fellow, or presented with uveitis. Consultations were also more complex for patients with at least four previous consultations in the past year. Conclusions, Type of referral, status of the attending doctor and number of consultations within the course of 1 year were associated with doctors' workload and could be taken into account to predict the duration of complexity of consultations when scheduling appointments. Putting more effort into understanding the components of managerial ability and how a managers' ability to perform well in each component might be improved is well overdue. As psychology is the study of people and their actions it is the obvious discipline to turn to for assistance. This paper contains a review of the psychology of decision making from a farm management perspective, outlines what psychology offers for changing a person's attributes, and considers the structure of a research programme aimed at developing methods for improving individual's managerial ability. [source] Dissolution of waste plastics in biodieselPOLYMER ENGINEERING & SCIENCE, Issue 5 2010Ying Zhang The dissolution behavior of polystyrene (PS) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in biodiesel was investigated with an eye towards developing methods to dispose waste plastics by burning them with fuel. To complement and guide the experimental investigations, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to calculate solubility parameters, cohesive energy densities, Flory-Huggins , parameters and phase diagrams of the target systems. Dissolution kinetics of PS and LDPE in methyl esters was monitored by gravimetry, from which parameters such as dissolution rates, activation energies, and scaling indices were estimated. The shear viscosity of the polymer solutions was measured to ascertain their suitability as fuel mixtures. The dissolution of PS in biodiesel appears to be controlled by the diffusion of polymer chains through a boundary layer adjacent to the polymer/solvent interface. Taken together, the experimental and modeling studies provide a predictive toolbox to design biodiesels of different compositions that will dissolve commodity polymers such as PS and LDPE to be used as fuels in engines. Consequently, more genomewide datasets describing aspects of gene and protein biology are available for yeast than for any other organism. This has led to the pioneering of many computational analysis techniques using yeast data.
