Selected AbstractsThe migratory behavior of immature enteric neuronsDEVELOPMENTAL NEUROBIOLOGY, Issue 1 2009M.M. Hao Abstract While they are migrating caudally along the developing gut, around 10%,20% of enteric neural crest-derived cells start to express pan-neuronal markers and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). We used explants of gut from embryonic TH-green fluorescence protein (GFP) mice and time-lapse microscopy to examine whether these immature enteric neurons migrate and their mode of migration. In the gut of E10.5 and E11.5 TH-GFP mice, around 50% of immature enteric neurons (GFP+ cells) migrated, with an average speed of around 15 ,m/h. This is slower than the speed at which the population of enteric neural crest-derived cells advances along the developing gut, and hence neuronal differentiation seems to slow, but not necessarily halt, the caudal migration of enteric neural crest cells. Most migrating immature enteric neurons migrated caudally by extending a long-leading process followed by translocation of the cell body. This mode of migration is different from that of non-neuronal enteric neural crest-derived cells and neural crest cells in other locations, but resembles that of migrating neurons in many regions of the developing central nervous system (CNS). In migrating immature enteric neurons, a swelling often preceded the movement of the nucleus in the direction of the leading process. However, the centrosomal marker, pericentrin, was not localized to either the leading process or swelling. [source] Phenotypic diagnosis of dwarfism in six Friesian horsesEQUINE VETERINARY JOURNAL, Issue 3 2008W. BACK Summary An extreme form of abnormal development, dwarfism, is common in man and some animals, but has not been officially reported in horses. Within the Friesian horse breed, congenital dwarfism has been recognised for many years, but no detailed report exists on its phenotype. The most salient feature of the dwarf syndrome is the physeal growth retardation in both limbs and ribs. Affected animals have approximately 25% shorter fore- and hindlimbs and approximately 50% reduced bodyweight. Post natal growth is still possible in these animals, albeit at a slower rate: the head and back grow faster than the limbs and ribs leading to the characteristic disproportional growth disturbance. Thus, mature dwarfs exhibit a normal, but a relatively larger head conformation, a broader chest with narrowing at the costochondral junction, a disproportionally long back, abnormally short limbs, hyperextension of the fetlocks and narrow long-toed hooves. Furthermore, a dysplastic metaphysis of the distal metacarpus and metatarsus is radiographically evident. Microscopic analysis of the growth plates at the costochondral junction shows an irregular transition from cartilage to bone, and thickening and disturbed formation of chondrocyte columns, which is similar to findings in osteochondrodysplasia. [source] Oxidation behaviour of particle reinforced MoSi2 composites at temperatures up to 1700°C.MATERIALS AND CORROSION/WERKSTOFFE UND KORROSION, Issue 3 2005Part II: Initial screening of the oxidation behaviour of MoSi2 composites Abstract In the first part of this paper a literature survey on the oxidation behaviour of MoSi2 and MoSi2 composites has been given. The present second part reports about the experimental results from oxidation tests with several MoSi2 composites containing 15 vol.-% Al2O3, Y2O3, ZrO2, HfO2, SiC, TiB2, ZrB2, or HfB2, respectively, from different development stages. The tests were conducted at 1600°C in air for 100 hours. It was shown that the production route of the powders has a significant influence on the performance of the materials at high temperatures. This was attributed to contaminations. Additionally, the results indicated that only the composites with SiC, ZrO2 or HfO2, respectively, are suitable for application above 1500°C. A more detailed report about the optimised material will follow in the third part of this paper. [source] Nutritional chemistry of foods eaten by gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, UgandaAMERICAN JOURNAL OF PRIMATOLOGY, Issue 7 2006Jessica M. Rothman Abstract Foods eaten by gorillas (Gorilla beringei) in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP), Uganda, were analyzed for their nutrient content. The goal of the study was to assess the amounts of fiber, protein, and sugars in the foods eaten by the Bwindi gorillas, and to determine whether condensed tannins and cyanide are present in these foods. A total of 127 food plant parts representing 84 plant species eaten by two groups of Bwindi gorillas were collected, processed, and analyzed for their chemical contents. The Bwindi gorilla ate foods that contain 2,28% crude protein (CP), 21,88% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 14,60% acid detergent fiber (ADF), 2,42% acid detergent lignin (ADL), and ,1,50% water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) on a dry matter (DM) basis. Moisture in these foods ranged from 7% to 96%. Approximately 35% of the foods analyzed contained condensed tannins, and two foods contained cyanogenic glycosides. This is the first detailed report regarding the nutritional chemistry of gorilla foods in Bwindi, many of which are also eaten by other primates. This unique data set adds to our knowledge about the nutritional composition of foods eaten by gorillas across habitats, is useful for understanding aspects of feeding behavior, and provides valuable comparative data for optimizing the diets of gorillas ex situ. [source] Efficacy and Safety of Anticoagulation With Heparin Versus Heparin Plus Epoprostenol in Patients Undergoing Extracorporeal Liver Support With PrometheusARTIFICIAL ORGANS, Issue 1 2010Peter Krisper Abstract Anticoagulation for extracorporeal liver support is delicate due to underlying coagulation disorders in patients with liver failure and to the associated elevated bleeding risk. To date, there has been no detailed report on anticoagulation issues in patients treated with Prometheus, a device based on the principle of fractionated plasma separation and adsorption. We studied 17 patients from two centers treated with Prometheus, comparing standard anticoagulation with heparin (15 treatments) and a combination of heparin and the synthetic prostacyclin epoprostenol (22 treatments). Standard coagulation tests, proteins C and S, and thrombin,antithrombin (TAT) complex were determined, and adverse events were recorded. All but two treatments could be completed as scheduled, although filter exchange due to filter clotting was required in 24% of the treatments. Three out of 17 patients developed severe bleeding complications within 24 h of treatment. There were no overt thrombotic events. Addition of epoprostenol neither reduced coagulation-related adverse events nor improved standard coagulation parameters. Protein C, but not protein S, showed a significant reduction (23 ± 18%) after Prometheus treatments, but levels rebounded to baseline within 18 h. TAT levels,a measure for activation of coagulation,were only altered by Prometheus in patients where TAT was already elevated before treatment. In conclusion, anticoagulation of Prometheus with heparin is feasible but still associated with a relatively high frequency of filter clotting and a considerable risk of severe bleeding in this high-risk patient population. As addition of epoprostenol did not prove beneficial, other strategies, such as regional anticoagulation with citrate, should be further evaluated. HUNT Summary Reasons for performing study: There are few detailed reports describing muscular disorders in Warmblood horses. Objectives: To determine the types of muscular disorders that occur in Warmblood horses, along with presenting clinical signs, associated risk factors and response to diet and exercise recommendations, and to compare these characteristics between horses diagnosed with polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM), those diagnosed with a neuromuscular disorder other than PSSM (non-PSSM) and control horses. Methods: Subject details, muscle biopsy diagnosis and clinical history were compiled for Warmblood horses identified from records of biopsy submissions to the University of Minnesota Neuromuscular Diagnostic Laboratory. A standardised questionnaire was answered by owners at least 6 months after receiving the muscle biopsy report for an affected and a control horse. Results: Polysaccharide storage myopathy (72/132 horses) was the most common myopathy identified followed by recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER) (7/132), neurogenic or myogenic atrophy (7/132), and nonspecific myopathic changes (14/132). Thirty-two biopsies were normal. Gait abnormality, ,tying-up', Shivers, muscle fasciculations and atrophy were common presenting clinical signs. Forty-five owners completed questionnaires. There were no differences in sex, age, breed, history or management between control, PSSM and non-PSSM horses. Owners that provided the recommended low starch fat supplemented diet and regular daily exercise reported improvement in clinical signs in 68% (19/28) of horses with a biopsy submission and 71% of horses diagnosed with PSSM (15/21). Conclusions: Muscle biopsy evaluation was a valuable tool to identify a variety of myopathies in Warmblood breeds including PSSM and RER. These myopathies often presented as gait abnormalities or overt exertional rhabdomyolysis and both a low starch fat supplemented diet and regular exercise appeared to be important in their successful management. Potential relevance: Warmbloods are affected by a variety of muscle disorders, which, following muscle biopsy diagnosis can be improved through changes in diet and exercise regimes. This has been well documented in many countries around the world, with detailed reports of suboptimal care prior to intensive care and high rates of serious adverse events, including death. These events are potentially preventable, but insufficient attention has been directed towards developing solutions to these important problems to date. The medical emergency team (MET) is a system approach that promotes early and appropriate intervention in the care of critically ill hospital patients. The benefits of the MET in terms of absolute in-patient mortality and cardiac arrest rates are not yet well-defined, although preliminary studies are promising. The MET does provide a potentially beneficial impact on many other aspects of patient care. These benefits include: (i) facilitating an integrated and coordinated approach to patient care across the hospital, (ii) increasing awareness of at-risk patients, (iii) encouraging early referral of seriously ill patients to clinicians with expertise in critical care and (iv) providing a foundation for quality initiatives for hospital-wide care of the seriously ill. The MET also empowers nursing staff and junior medical staff to call for immediate assistance in cases where they are seriously concerned about a patient, but may not have the experience, knowledge, confidence or skills necessary to manage them appropriately. Verma Summary The sari, the elegant garment worn by Indian and many South Asian women, is associated with many cutaneous signs. With millions of South Asians settled all over the world, it is important for clinicians to be aware of the cutaneous associations of wearing a sari that is tied tightly around the waist with a drawstring. Lichenified linear hyperpigmented grooves, vitiligo, postinflammatory depigmentation, lichen planus and superficial cutaneous infections are some of the conditions seen in women wearing this garment. This review is one of the very few detailed reports of this widely worn garment and its dermatological associations. [source] |
