External commercialization of knowledge: Review and research agenda

Companies increasingly make use of external knowledge exploitation, i.e. the commercialization of knowledge assets, although they often perceive considerable difficulties in managing external commercialization tasks. These difficulties are partly due to the imperfections in the markets for knowledge, which may be mastered by adequate management, as examples of various well-known companies show. In combination, these facts point to the need for research into external knowledge exploitation. A thorough analysis of past research confirms this need and shows that the existing literature is highly fragmented. By integrating the main findings of the different research streams, a detailed overview of the literature on external knowledge exploitation is established. The key characteristics of externally leveraging knowledge assets are presented, and a research agenda is set up. [source]


Performance evaluation of TCP-based applications over DVB-RCS DAMA schemes

Abstract Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) performance over Digital Video Broadcasting,Return Channel via Satellite (DVB-RCS) standard is greatly affected by the total delay, which is mainly due to two components, propagation delay and access delay. Both are significant because they are dependent on the long propagation path of the satellite link. The former is intrinsic and due to radio wave propagation over the satellite channel for both TCP packets and acknowledgements. It is regulated by the control loop that governs TCP. The latter is due to the control loop that governs the demand assignment multiple access (DAMA) signalling exchange between satellite terminals and the network control center, necessary to manage return link resources. DAMA is adopted in DVB-RCS standard to achieve flexible and efficient use of the shared resources. Therefore, performance of TCP over DVB-RCS may degrade due to the exploitation of two nested control loops also depending on both the selected DAMA algorithm and the traffic profile. This paper analyses the impact of basic DAMA implementation on TCP-based applications over a DVB-RCS link for a large set of study cases. Coupled simulation of the flue gas and process gas side of a steam cracker convection section

Abstract A coupled simulation of the flue gas and process gas side of the convection section of a steam cracker is performed, making use of the CFD software package Fluent. A detailed overview of the operating mode of the different heat exchangers suspended in the convection section is obtained. The asymmetric inlet flow field of the flue gas in the convection section, and the radiation from the convection section walls leads to large differences in outlet temperatures of the tubes located in the same row. The flow fields and temperature fields in the tubes of a single heat exchanger differ significantly with e.g., outlet temperatures of the hydrocarbon-steam mixture ranging from 820 K to 852 K. Moreover, the simulations reveal the presence of hot spots on the lowest tube row, possibly causing fouling. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2009 [source]


Engineering functional materials by halogen bonding

Abstract Engineering functional materials endowed with unprecedented properties require the exploitation of new intermolecular interactions, which can determine the characteristics of the bulk materials. The great potential of Halogen Bonding (XB), namely any noncovalent interaction involving halogens as electron acceptors, in the design of new and high-value functional materials is now emerging clearly. This Highlight will give a detailed overview on the energetic and geometric features of XB, showing how some of them are quite constant in most of the formed supramolecular complexes (e.g., the angle formed by the covalent and the noncovalent bonds around the halogen atom), while some others depend strictly on the nature of the interacting partners. Then, several specific examples of halogen-bonded supramolecular architectures, whose structural aspects as well as applications in fields as diverse as enantiomers' separation, crystal engineering, liquid crystals, natural, and synthetic receptors, will be fully described. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Automation of solid-phase microextraction

Abstract This review discusses developments and future challenges in the automation of solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The emphasis of the review is placed on automated SPME-GC using fibre and in-tube configurations, and includes discussion of recent developments that may have significant implications for automation such as superelastic fibre assemblies and internally cooled fibre-SPME. Existing methods used for automated SPME-LC are summarised together with a more detailed overview of recent developments such as using solvent desorption followed by syringe injection using a robotic system. Progress towards automation of other SPME configurations is also discussed. [source]


Familial cortical myoclonic tremor with epilepsy: A single syndromic classification for a group of pedigrees bearing common features

Abstract Fifty Japanese and European families with cortical myoclonic tremor and epilepsy have been reported under various names. Unfamiliarity with the syndrome often leads to an initial misdiagnosis of essential tremor or progressive myoclonus epilepsy. A detailed overview of the literature is lacking and is the scope of this study. Disease characteristics are adult onset, distal action tremor and myoclonus, epileptic seizures, autosomal dominant inheritance, benign course, effectiveness of antiepileptic drugs, and possibly cognitive decline. A channelopathy is hypothesized to be the basis of the disease. Despite phenotypic and genetic differences between the Japanese and European pedigrees, the clinical and electrophysiological data point toward one syndrome. To avoid confusion in literature and possible misdiagnosis of patients, we propose to use one description and suggest "familial cortical myoclonic tremor with epilepsy" (FCMTE). In addition, we put forward diagnostic criteria to give a starting point from which to conduct genetic studies. © 2005 Movement Disorder Society [source]
