Population density affects foraging behavior of male Black-throated Blue Warblers during the breeding season

ABSTRACT Foraging behavior often reflects food availability, a resource that may increasingly limit breeding birds as intraspecific crowding increases. Measuring foraging behavior, therefore, provides a way to investigate effects of population density on food limitation, an important link in understanding how crowding functions to regulate populations. We quantified three components of foraging behavior (prey attack rate, foraging speed, and relative use of morphologically constrained attack maneuvers) for male Black-throated Blue Warblers (Dendroica caerulescens) breeding under experimentally manipulated density conditions. Building on the previous work showing the density of conspecific neighbors affects territory size, reproductive success, and the time budgets of males (Sillett et al. 2004, Ecology 85: 2467,2477), we further show that density affects male foraging strategies. Although not differing in attack rate or foraging speed, male Black-throated Blue Warblers on territories with reduced neighbor densities used energetically expensive aerial attack maneuvers significantly less frequently than males in control (high-density) territories during both the incubation period and when provisioning nestlings and fledglings. We conclude that males altered their foraging behavior to compensate for density-related reductions in time available for foraging and that population density may constrain the time available for foraging. SINOPSIS La conducta de forrajeo muchas veces refleja la disponibilidad de alimentos, un recurso que puede limitar la capacidad reproductiva con el aumento en el número de individuos. El medir la conducta de forrajeo, puede proveer de una forma de investigar el efecto de la limitación de alimentos en la dencidad poblacional, enlace importante para entender como el acinamiento funciona para regular una población. Cuantificamos tres componentes de la conducta de forrajeo (tasa de ataque de la presa, velocidad de forrajeo, y uso relativo de maniobras de ataque con respecto a restricciones morfológicas) para machos de Dendroica caerulescens reproduciéndose bajo densidades manipuladas experimentalmente. Utilizando como base trabajos que señalan que la densidad conespecífica vecinal afecta el tamaño del territorio, el éxito reproductivo y el presupuesto utilizado por los machos (Sillett et al. 2004, Ecology 85:2467-2477) demostramos que la densidad afecta además la estrategia de forrajeo de los machos. Aunque no hay diferencia en la tasa de ataque o velocidad de forrajeo, machos en territorios con pocos vecinos, utilizaron maniobras de forrajeo energéticamente más costosas y con una frecuencia significativamente menos costosa que el grupo control (áreas con alta densidad), tanto durante la fase de incubación como la de crianza de pichones. Concluimos que los machos alteran su conducta de forrajeo para compensar por la reducción en la densidad de individuos y en el tiempo disponible para forrajear, y que la densidad de la población puede limitar el tiempo disponible para forrajear. Impact of spectral composition on larval haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus L., growth and survival

Abstract In a small-scale culture experiment, larval haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus L., were raised under various combinations of light quality [blue (470 nm), green (530 nm) or full-spectrum white light] and light intensity [low (0.3,0.4 µmol s,1 m,2) or high (1.7,1.9 µmol s,1 m,2)], and in total darkness (both fed, and starved). Larval growth (0.9% day,1 in standard length; 2.4% day,1 in body area) was not significantly different between any combination of coloured light. At the time of total mortality in the starved treatment, survival was significantly reduced under low intensity, full-spectrum white light (13%) vs. all other coloured light treatments (68%). Larvae raised under both continuous dark treatments (fed and starved) exhibited morphological changes associated with irreversible starvation (point-of-no-return). Lack of a pronounced effect of light quality on larval haddock growth probably results from a combination of plasticity in early larval vision, and enhanced encounter rates between larvae and prey at the relatively high prey densities used in aquaculture. Observations on feed size and capture success in the larval butterfly splitfin (Ameca splendens Miller & Fitzsimons, 1971, Pisces: Goodeidae) reared on zooplankton

Summary In this study, we quantified the feeding behaviour (encounter, attack, capture. and ingestion) of larval A. splendens on micro-crustacean prey [cladocerans: Alona rectangula, Simocephalus vetulus (separately neonates and adults), Ceriodaphnia dubia, Daphnia pulex (juveniles), Moina macrocopa and ostracods: Heterocypris incongruens]. Although we initially (first 4 weeks) offered rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus and B. patulus), they were not consumed by the larvae and hence observations with these prey were discontinued. Feeding behaviour was observed during the first 10 weeks. Fifteen observations were made with each prey species (seven diets × four replicates). Experiments were conducted in 50 ml transparent containers with 20 ml fish-conditioned water into which one fry was introduced. Before introducing the fish, 20 individuals of a given cladoceran prey species or 50 individuals of a rotifer prey species were introduced. Until the fourth week, we used 20 ml of medium and thereafter 30 ml, but the prey density used remained constant (1 ind. ml,1). Observations (10 min per fry per cladoceran replicate) were taken under a stereomicroscope (20×) for the first 2 weeks and later with a lamp and a magnifying lens. The number of encounters (E), attacks (A), captures (C) and ingestions (I) were recorded. During the study period, there was a 60% increase in gape size but only a 30% increase in body length. The number of encounters of larval A. splendens was highest (192) on M. macrocopa and lowest (29) on ostracods and adult S. vetulus (59). The inverse relationship between capture success and prey size was more pronounced during the latter half of the study period. Compared with all the other prey types offered, A. splendens fed maximally on M. macrocopa, which therefore could be a suitable diet for the larval rearing of this fish species. [source]


Accuracy of orientation distribution function determination based on EBSD data-A case study of a recrystallized low alloyed Zr sheet

Summary The question of the statistical accuracy of EBSD data for global texture calculation was re-explored on the basis of a very large grain population (83 000 grains measured on a recrystallized low-alloyed Zr sheet). Previous works aimed mainly at identifying and quantifying the main texture components and were based on much smaller data sets. The present work attempts to quantify the accuracy of the complete texture, including low-density regions of the orientation space. For that purpose, a new statistical parameter, V,, based on the calculation of texture difference functions is proposed. This parameter has two main advantages: it is equally sensitive to both high and low peaks of the orientation density function (ODF), and it has a physical interpretation because it is the material volume fraction corresponding to the difference between a given ODF and a reference ODF (considered, or known to be close to the truth). Two main variables were studied: the number of grains taken into account and the peak width ,0 of Bunge's ,Gaussian' model density used as kernel for the actual analysis. The orientation distribution functions were computed by nonparametric kernel density estimation with harmonics up to the order of 34. Minimizing the value of V, serves as the objective function for optimizing the peak width ,0 as a function of the number of grains. The properties of the V, parameter also allows for the definition of a method for estimating the accuracy of a given texture that has been obtained from a limited number of grains, without knowing the true texture of the investigated material. Effect of rearing density on the growth and welfare indices of juvenile spotted wolffish, Anarhichas minor (Olafsen)

Abstract The goal of this study was to determine the optimal stocking density for rearing juvenile spotted wolffish, Anarhichas minor (Olafsen), at two different sizes and assess the welfare status in relation to density. No major growth impairment was observed, although smaller fish (50,100 g) were significantly affected by density during the 120 days of the experiment, with final mean weights of 119.6 ± 11.6, 118.0 ± 5.8 and 88.7 ± 0.6 g for initial rearing densities of 10, 20 and 40 kg m,2 respectively. No effect of rearing density was seen for larger fish (100,160 g) during the 90 days of the experiment, with final mean weights of 160.2 ± 5.9, 159.7 ± 3.7 and 163.7 ± 11.5 g at fixed rearing densities of 20, 30 and 40 kg m,2 respectively. Our results suggest that the optimal rearing density of juvenile spotted wolffish is below 40 kg m,2 for smaller size fish (,50,100 g) and probably ,40 kg m,2 for the larger fish (100,160 g). Furthermore, it appears that the range of rearing density used did not have a significant effect on a selection of stress indicators (Na+ and K+ concentration, haematocrit, hepatosomatic index, total amount of plasma proteins and liver and muscle water content) and immunity response (plasma lysozyme activity) of juvenile spotted wolffish, making it a very tolerant species to crowding.
