Daycare Centre (daycare + centre)
Selected AbstractsSexual abuse at a Swedish daycare centre: allegations, confessions and evaluationsACTA PAEDIATRICA, Issue 8 2000F Lindblad In September 1997, sexual abuse at a Swedish daycare centre was disclosed. The suspect, a male member of the staff, admitted having abused six children. A total of 30 children were included in the police investigation. In this study, these cases were evaluated individually using a child psychiatric method. Information was collected from the police investigation and from interviews with parents. The conclusions, categorized as "abuse likely", "abuse conceivable" or "abuse uncertain",were compared with the children's own reports, the legal evaluations and the confessions of the suspects. Conclusions: The correspondence of child reports with child psychiatric evaluations was fairly high, indicating that child reports may serve as a good screening indicator of abuse. There was little agreement between child psychiatric evaluations and legal decisions, which were based on the reports of suspects. Some differences may be explained by varied methodology, definitions and criteria. Others reflect real differences in opinion. Our study illustrates the need to establish legal criteria for statements from pre-schoolers if such evidence is to constitute the basis of a ruling without a confession. Studies comparing professional psychological assessments of children's statements about sexual abuse with independent data stand out as an important line of research for the future. Methods., The dental health of 472 2,4-year-old children was examined using a mirror and a penlight in 14 daycare centres representing seven communities around Estonia. The mean (± SD) age of the children was 41.4 ± 4.1 months (n = 222). Plaque samples of 222 children were employed to determine the presence of MS using the Dentocult® SM Strip mutans test. Results., Caries was diagnosed in 42% of the children, and the average (± SD) dmft index was 1.6 ± 2.5, ranging from 1.1 ± 1.2 in Tartu to 2.4 ± 3.1 in Võru. The proportion of caries-free children decreased from 82% in the younger to 63% in the older group (P = 0.001). Among the tested subjects, 58% were colonized with MS, and those with caries were colonized more often than children with no visible caries (80% and 51%, respectively; P = 0.001). Conclusions., The prevalence of dental caries in Estonian 2,4-year-olds is higher than in the Nordic countries, but similar to other Baltic nations. Colonization by MS was associated with dental caries. Methods: The study was undertaken in a randomized controlled trial with 496 children aged 1,3 years attending 29 childcare centres in Perth, Australia. The endpoint for the study was the number of days in which children were recorded as having four or more stools. The diarrhoeal rates were analyzed by Poisson regression using ,intention to treat' (all children) and ,reduced' (children enrolled for more than 10 days) data sets. Results: There was no difference in demographic characteristics between the case and control groups. In the ,intention to treat' analysis, a total of 41 745 child-days were included in the study. The adjusted risk ratio for those consuming the ,Cupday' milk drink was 0.82 (95% CI 0.73,0.94) for the intention to treat sample (n = 496) and 0.80 (95% CI 0.70,0.91) for the reduced sample (n = 315). The children consuming the ,Cupday' drink had a 20% reduction in the number of days experiencing four or more stools per day. Conclusion: A milk containing probiotics and prebiotics reduced the number of days children attending child care who had four or more stools by 20%. [source] |
