Selected AbstractsSpontaneous apoptosis in chronic lymphocytic leukemia and its relationship to clinical and cell kinetic parametersCYTOMETRY, Issue 6 2001Gislaine B. Oliveira Abstract Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) presents considerable variability in clinical presentation as well as in its evolution. In contrast to the inhibition of apoptosis in vivo, spontaneous apoptosis after short-term culture occurs. We studied the degree of this apoptosis in vitro, and its interactions with several clinical and laboratory parameters. Apoptosis was measured by the annexin V technique. Proliferation rate was evaluated by the AgNOR (nucleolar organizer regions) technique. There were inverse correlations between the percentage of annexin V-positive cells and peripheral lymphocyte count (r = - 0.49), Rai stage (r = - 0.40), Binet stage (r = - 0.50), TTM (total tumor mass score; r = - 0.51), and percentage of cells with one AgNOR cluster (r = - 0.45). Direct correlations were found with hemoglobin values ( r = 0.34) and platelet counts (r = 0.52). The number of CD8-positive cells showed a correlation with peripheral lymphocyte count (r = 0.49). When this variable was held constant, a correlation was detected between CD8-positive cells and staging (r = -0.47), TTM (r = - 0.42), and platelet count (r = 0.67). CD4-positive lymphocytes presented a correlation only with CD8-positive lymphocytes. In a cluster analysis, it was possible to create three groups of patients with different apoptosis rates using the TTM and AgNOR values. We conclude that, with the progression of the disease, together with the increase of tumor mass and proliferation rate, there is a decrease in the suceptibility to apoptosis. Cytometry (Comm. Clin. [source] Level of trace elements in Pteridophytes growing on serpentine and metalliferous soilsJOURNAL OF PLANT NUTRITION AND SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 6 2007Laura Cornara Abstract A screening of Pteridophytes growing on serpentine and metalliferous soils in Northern Italy was carried out to assess the ability of these plants to tolerate or accumulate trace elements of toxicological interest. Few data are available on metal tolerance/accumulation of terrestrial ferns growing in the Mediterranean region, and several species presented here have never been investigated for this purpose. The trace-element composition (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn) and P content of aerial parts of plants (12 fern and 2 horsetail species) and of their associated soils were measured. An analysis of the relationship between element concentrations in soil and in shoot revealed a significant correlation only for Zn (p < 0.05). Hierarchical cluster analysis based on element concentrations in plant aerial parts showed two outliers, viz. Equisetum ramosissimum Desf., showing the highest levels of Cr, Fe, Cu, Ni, and As, and Nephrolepis cordifolia C. Presl., showing the highest Pb value. The bioaccumulation factor exceeded 1 only for Cd in two species, Athyrium filix-femina and Dryopteris filix-mas. However, also in these cases the corresponding values of the metal in the shoots were below the thresholds for hyperaccumulators. The examined Pteridophytes seem to have developed their adaptation prevalently through mechanisms of tolerance based on metal exclusion. None of these plant species seem suitable for phytoextraction, but N. cordifolia, Pteridium aquilinum ssp. aquilinum, and E. ramosissimum have potential to be used for stabilization and restoration of soils rich in heavy metals. [source] T-helper 17 cells expand in multiple sclerosis and are inhibited by interferon-,,ANNALS OF NEUROLOGY, Issue 5 2009Luca Durelli MD Objective T-helper 1 (Th1) and Th17 lymphocytes are involved in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, the model of multiple sclerosis (MS). We characterized the Th1/Th17 cell populations in peripheral blood (PB), their interferon (IFN) receptor expression sensitivity to IFN-, in MS patients. Methods In 30 untreated patients with active MS (AMS) and 32 with inactive MS (IMS), and in 22 healthy subjects, we measured intracellular cytokine expression, interleukin-17,producing myelin basic protein,stimulated PB lymphocytes, surface IFN type I receptor chain1 (IFN-,R1) expression, IFN-,-dependent signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) phosphorylation, and apoptosis of anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody,stimulated PB lymphocytes. Results Th17 cell percentage increased around sevenfold in AMS compared with IMS or healthy subjects, but there was no change in Th1 cells. Th17 cells in AMS were myelin basic protein specific. The longitudinal follow-up of 18 MS patients shifting between AMS and IMS showed that the percentage of Th17 but not Th1 cells always increased in AMS. IFN-,R1 expression, IFN-,,induced STAT1 activation, and apoptosis were significantly greater in Th17 than Th1 cells. IFN-,R1 expression and IFN-,,dependent STAT1 activation progressively increased in vitro with a highly significant positive correlation only in developing Th17 but not in Th0 or Th1 cells. Interpretation Evidence that an expansion of peripheral Th17 cells, a Th subset that can infiltrate brain parenchyma and damage cells, is associated with disease activity in MS. The greater IFN-,R1 level expressed by Th17 compared with Th1 cells might make them a selective target for IFN-, therapy. Tomadakis Abstract Dimensionless parameters representing the viscous permeability (k) and NMR relaxation time (T1) of particle beds, while accounting also for the particle size, are shown to improve drastically the accuracy of k-T1 correlations in the slow diffusion regime, in the absence of bulk relaxation effects. The finding is based on a regression analysis of numerical results for k and T1 in both random and ordered isotropic and anisotropic beds of fibers. Use of the formation factor (F) improves further the accuracy of the correlations only for the strongly anisotropic unidirectional arrays of fibers. A survey of related literature reveals an extensive effort in recent years in upgrading k-T1 correlations, driven primarily by applications in petroleum and gas field exploration and recovery. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Portolan Abstract We investigate the influence of environmental noise on polariton entangled pairs in the self-stimulated regime. By adopting a recent separability criterion, we show that self-stimulation may suppress the detrimental influence of noise on entanglement, but once effective, a noise-equipped classical model of parametric emission provides the same results of quantum theory with respect to the separability criterion. More generally we show that, in the macroscopic limit, it is not possible to observe violations of local realism with measurements of finite order n -particle correlations only. These results provide a prototypical case of the emergence of macroscopic local realism in the presence of strong entanglement even in the absence of decoherence. (© 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
