    THE CORRELATION OF YOUTH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WITH STATE POLICIES

    Childhood overweight has risen dramatically in the United States during the past three decades. The search for policy solutions is limited by a lack of evidence regarding the effectiveness of state policies for increasing physical activity among youths. This paper estimates the correlation of student physical activity with a variety of state policies. We study nationwide data on high school students from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System for 1999, 2001, and 2003 merged with data on state policies from several sources. We control for a variety of characteristics of states and students to mitigate bias due to the endogenous selection of policies, but we conservatively interpret our results as correlations, not causal impacts. Two policies are positively correlated with participation in physical education (PE) class for both boys and girls: a binding PE unit requirement and a state PE curriculum. We also find that state spending on parks and recreation is positively correlated with two measures of girls' overall physical activity. (JEL I18, I28) [source]


    ABSENCE OF CORRELATION BETWEEN QRS DURATION AND ECHOGRAPHIC PARAMETERS OF VENTRICULAR DESYNCHRONIZATION.

    CAN WE STILL TRUST THE ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHIC CRITERIA?
    Background: Identification of the responder candidates for multisite pacing is still difficult and severe heart failure, dilated left ventricle with reduced ejection fraction, prolonged QRS with left bundle branch block (LBBB) are still considered the principal indicators of ventricular desynchronization. The aim of the study was to assess if echographic ventricular desynchronization parameters measured in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and severe heart failure are correlated with the duration of the QRS on surface electrocardiogram. Methods: This study included 51 patients aged 58.8 ± 7.4 years with idiopathic DCM. The following parameters were measured: QRS duration; effective contraction time (ECT) measured as the interval between QRS onset and closure of aortic valve, interventricular delay (IVD) measured as the time between onset of aortic and pulmonary flow, left ventricular mechanical delay (LVD) as the time from maximal interventricular septum contraction and posterior wall contraction, posterior (P), lateral (L), and posterolateral (PL) wall delays, as the time from QRS onset to maximal wall contraction. Regional post-systolic contraction was defined in a given wall as the difference (contraction delay , ECT)> 50 ms. Results: 29 patients presented complete LBBB, 22 patients had QRS duration < 120 ms. 39 patients had a post-systolic contraction of the PL wall (32 patients of the L wall and 26 patients of the P wall). 16 patients with QRS duration <120 had a post-systolic contraction of the PL wall (as for the LBBB the rest of 39 patients). In 40 patients the sequence of regional ventricular contraction was: P-L-PL wall (16 patients with QRS < 120). LVD was > 100 ms in 36 patients (26 patients with LBBB and 10 with QRS < 120). 27 patients with LBBB and 6 with QRS < 120 ms presented IVD > 30 ms. There was no correlation between the QRS duration and the parameters listed above. Conclusions: In a population of patients with severe heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy there is no correlation between the duration of the QRS and echocardiographic parameters of ventricular desynchronization. These results show that mechanical ventricular desynchronization can be observed in patients with a QRS duration < 120 ms. Further studies are needed to evaluate if this population could beneficiate of multisite pacing therapy. [source]


    DETECTING CORRELATION BETWEEN CHARACTERS IN A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS WITH UNCERTAIN PHYLOGENY

    Abstract., The importance of accommodating the phylogenetic history of a group when performing a comparative analysis is now widely recognized. The typical approaches either assume the tree is known without error, or they base inferences on a collection of well-supported trees or on a collection of trees generated under a stochastic model of cladogenesis. However, these approaches do not adequately account for the uncertainty of phylogenetic trees in a comparative analysis, especially when data relevant to the phylogeny of a group are available. Here, we develop a method for performing comparative analyses that is based on an extension of Felsenstein's independent contrasts method. Uncertainties in the phylogeny, branch lengths, and other parameters are accommodated by averaging over all possible trees, weighting each by the probability that the tree is correct. We do this in a Bayesian framework and use Markov chain Monte Carlo to perform the high-dimensional summations and integrations required by the analysis. We illustrate the method using comparative characters sampled from Anolis lizards. [source]

    CORRELATION OF GASTRIC INTESTINAL METAPLASIA AND HELICOBACTER PYLORI INFECTION AMONG FUNCTIONAL DYSPEPTIC PATIENTS

    Background: It is generally accepted that intestinal metaplasia (IM) is a pre cursor of gastric cancer and is associated with Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection. But still little data available about association of IM and Hp in different clinical groups of patients, especially in areas with high Hp prevalence. Aim: to evaluate the IM and itís correlation with Hp infection in consecutive patients with functional dyspepsia (FD). Methods: a retrospective review of our endoscopy database and histological data from January 1997 to December 1999 was made. In this period we performed 3083 upper intestinal endoscopy in patients with FD. Endoscopy procedure was done without any specific preparation for Hp evaluation. Biopsy specimen were taken from antrum and corpus and were stained with Giemsa, H&E and Alcian Blue. Histological data was evaluated by pathologist from Department of Pathology, Medical Faculty, University of Indonesia according to the Sydney System. IM was evaluated as present or absent. One hundred and fourteen consecutive data were eligible for statistical analysis. Results: Histological data of 114 patients with FD was analyzed. Average age was 45.47 years (SD 14.32), male 62.3 % (71/114), and female 37.7 % (43/114). Forty-eight (42.11%) patients with FD were Hp positive on histology and were significantly older than Hp negative. (48.74 +12.65/43.25+15.04; p < 0.05). IM was present in 13 ( 11.4%) patients with FD. They were significantly older than the patients without IM (mean age 55.08+11.98/44.23+14.18; p <0.05) Frequency of IM was similar both in Hp positive and Hp negative patients with FD (12.5%/10.6%; p>0.05). Conclusions: IM among patients with FD was 11.4%. IM was significantly more frequent found in older age but our data suggest that IM is not related to Hp status in FD patients. [source]


    CLOTHING MOVEMENT , VISUAL SENSORY EVALUATION AND ITS CORRELATION TO FABRIC PROPERTIES

    ABSTRACT Clothing movement was evaluated on a video screen by a descriptive analysis sensory technique and correlated to tactile attributes and fabric mechanical properties. Six fabrics were tailored into identical wide-leg trousers and dresses, animated by a professional model, filmed and edited for sensory evaluation. Tactile attributes were assessed sensorially and fabric mechanical properties were characterized by F.A.S.T. (Fabric Assurance by Simple Testing) and drape measurements. The following bipolar attribute pairs dominate movement language and perception: flowing to stiff and heavyweight to lightweight. Perceptual space of clothing movement is essentially two dimensional and high correlation coefficients between visual and tactile attributes were found. The fabric drape coefficient correlates highly with visual and tactile attributes and is a simple screening method for clothing movement prediction. [source]


    BASAL CAMBRIAN MICROFOSSILS FROM THE YURTUS AND XISHANBLAQ FORMATIONS (TARIM, NORTH-WEST CHINA): SYSTEMATIC REVISION AND BIOSTRATIGRAPHIC CORRELATION OF MICRHYSTRIDIUM -LIKE ACRITARCHS

    Abstract:,Micrhystridium -like acritarchs are widely distributed in basal Cambrian cherts and phosphorites in South China. This paper describes similar acritarchs from the basal Cambrian Yurtus and Xishanblaq formations in Tarim, north-west China. The taxonomy of these acritarchs is revised. The basal Cambrian acritarch assemblage in Tarim and South China is characterized by three genera: Asteridium Moczyd,owska, Heliosphaeridium Moczyd,owska and Comasphaeridium Staplin, Jansonius and Pocock. This assemblage is named the Asteridium - Heliosphaeridium - Comasphaeridium (AHC) acritarch assemblage. In both South China and Tarim, the AHC acritarch assemblage is associated with the tubular microfossil Megathrix longus Yin L. and the small shelly fossil Kaiyangites novilis Qian and Yin G. This assemblage also occurs in the Lower Tal Formation in the Lesser Himalaya. Correlation with small shelly fossil (SSF) assemblages indicates that the AHC assemblage is restricted to the Meishucunian Stage, and possibly to the lower Meishucunian (Anabarites trisulcatus - Protohertzina anabarica and Siphogonuchites triangularis - Paragloborilus subglobosus SSF assemblages). The AHC assemblage is broadly similar to the Asteridium tornatum - Comasphaeridium velvetum (acritarch) Zone in the East European Platform, which is considered to be Nemakit-Daldynian (and possibly Tommotian) in age.     CORRELATION BETWEEN SPECTRAL, SEM/EDX AND ELECTROCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF MAYA BLUE: A CHEMOMETRIC STUDY*

    Visible spectra, composition from SEM/EDX and solid-state electrochemical data are correlated for a set of 12 Maya Blue samples from different archaeological sites of Campeche and Yucatán (Mexico). In addition to indigo and dehydroindigo, indirubin and other possibly indigo-type compounds can be detected in Maya Blue samples. Application of hierarchical cluster analysis techniques allows similarity relationships to be established between samples from different sites, confirming prior results which suggest that the preparation of Maya Blue pigment evolved with time during the Maya culture following a ramified scheme.     COVARIATE-ADJUSTED REGRESSION FOR LONGITUDINAL DATA INCORPORATING CORRELATION BETWEEN REPEATED MEASUREMENTS

    Summary We propose an estimation method that incorporates the correlation/covariance structure between repeated measurements in covariate-adjusted regression models for distorted longitudinal data. In this distorted data setting, neither the longitudinal response nor (possibly time-varying) predictors are directly observable. The unobserved response and predictors are assumed to be distorted/contaminated by unknown functions of a common observable confounder. The proposed estimation methodology adjusts for the distortion effects both in estimation of the covariance structure and in the regression parameters using generalized least squares. The finite-sample performance of the proposed estimators is studied numerically by means of simulations. The consistency and convergence rates of the proposed estimators are also established. The proposed method is illustrated with an application to data from a longitudinal study of cognitive and social development in children. [source]


    PLASTICITY IN REPRODUCTIVE PHENOTYPES REVEALS STATUS-SPECIFIC CORRELATIONS BETWEEN BEHAVIORAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, AND PHYSIOLOGICAL SEXUAL TRAITS

    Reproductive success is determined by a complex interplay between multiple sexual traits that promote mate acquisition and, following copulation, provide control over paternity. The intensity of sexual competition that individuals experience often fluctuates, and here we investigate how this influences the expression of reproductive traits and their relationships. We show in the fowl, Gallus gallus, that males of different social status, which experience different intensities of sexual competition, before and after copulation, have different reproductive phenotypes. Dominant males are more vigilant, feed less, and have larger sexual ornaments than subordinate males. Experimentally manipulating social status revealed that these differences were phenotypically plastic, indicating multiple sexual traits were dependent on the social environment. We integrated these data with previous published findings on changes in sperm numbers and velocity to show that relationships between traits were different for males when they were dominant and when they were subordinate. Furthermore, when males switched status a complex array of negative and positive correlations between the degree traits changed was observed. Our results suggest that variation in the intensity of sexual competition generates reversible plasticity in reproductive phenotypes and that relationships between sexual traits may be variable and influence the evolution of reproductive strategies.     LOCAL HETEROZYGOSITY-FITNESS CORRELATIONS WITH GLOBAL POSITIVE EFFECTS ON FITNESS IN THREESPINE STICKLEBACK

    Abstract The complex interactions between genetic diversity and evolution have important implications in many biological areas including conservation, speciation, and mate choice. A common way to study these interactions is to look at heterozygosity-fitness correlations (HFCs). Until recently, HFCs based on noncoding markers were believed to result primarily from global inbreeding effects. However, accumulating theoretical and empirical evidence shows that HFCs may often result from genes being linked to the markers used (local effect). Moreover, local effect HFCs could differ from global inbreeding effects in their direction and occurrence. Consequently, the investigation of the structure and consequences of local HFCs is emerging as a new important goal in evolutionary biology. In this study of a wild threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) population, we first tested the presence of significant positive or negative local effects of heterozygosity at 30 microsatellites loci on five fitness components: survival, mating success, territoriality, length, and body condition. Then, we evaluated the direction and shape of total impact of local HFCs, and estimated the magnitude of the impacts on fitness using regression coefficients and selection differentials. We found that multilocus heterozygosity was not a reliable estimator of individual inbreeding coefficient, which supported the relevance of single-locus based analyses. Highly significant and temporally stable local HFCs were observed. These were mainly positive, but negative effects of heterozygosity were also found. Strong and opposite effects of heterozygosity are probably present in many populations, but may be blurred in HFC analyses looking for global effects only. In this population, both negative and positive HFCs are apparently driving mate preference by females, which is likely to contribute to the maintenance of both additive and nonadditive genetic variance.     DIMENSIONLESS CORRELATIONS FOR CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER IN CANNED PARTICULATE FLUIDS UNDER AXIAL ROTATION PROCESSING

    ABSTRACT Dimensionless correlations for estimating heat transfer coefficients (U and hfp) in canned high viscosity Newtonian liquids (with and without particles) were developed using stepwise multiple nonlinear regressions of statistically significant dimensionless groups using tangent as an estimate and Newton as search method. Data on overall heat transfer coefficient U and fluid-to-particle heat transfer coefficients hfpwere obtained for several processing conditions and were analyzed separately for particle and particle-free conditions. In free axial mode, a newly developed form, combining natural and forced convection, provided higher R2 = 0.93. In the absence of particles in end-over-end mode, introducing natural convection term (Gr × Pr), improved R2 from 0.81 to 0.97. Combination of the reel radius, radius of the can and radius of the particles was chosen as characteristics length. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Most earlier dimensionless correlations for a canned liquid particulate mixture subjected to free axial mode of agitation are present for either U or hfp individually due to the difficulties in obtaining time,temperature profiles of the liquid and particles simultaneously; however, the time,temperature prediction at the particle center requires appropriate correlations for both U and hfp and cannot be made with only one of these coefficients. Additionally, importance of natural convection in forced convection heat transfer correlations has been demonstrated by developing the U and hfp correlations using the mixed convection approach as the combination of natural and forced convection heat transfer. These developed correlations would help in modeling the time,temperature profiles of a canned particulate mixture and will be helpful in determining the contribution of natural and forced convection heat transfer. These dimensional numbers would give a better understanding of the physical phenomenon and can also be easily used for scale-up purposes. [source]


    THE HYDROCARBON POTENTIAL OF LEBANON: NEW INSIGHTS FROM REGIONAL CORRELATIONS AND STUDIES OF JURASSIC DOLOMITIZATION

    This paper presents an updated review of the petroleum prospects of Lebanon. We briefly describe the known hydrocarbon shows in Lebanon and compare them with adjacent countries, leading to the construction of a model for hydrocarbon migration which takes into account regional facies and reservoir correlations. The oldest exposed rocks in Lebanon are the Jurassic carbonates of the Kesrouane Formation (over 1,000m thick). This formation can be divided into a basal unit dominated by seepage-reflux stratabound dolostones (the Chouane Member,) and an overlying limestone-prone unit (the Nahr Ibrahim Member). A two-stage dolomitisation model for the Jurassic carbonates in Lebanon has recently been proposed by the authors. According to this model, second-stage Late Jurassic hydrothermal dolomitisation is believed to have occurred as a result of the circulation of mixed dolomitising fluids along faults. Hence, the resulting dolostones are fault-controlled and strata-discordant, and may occur at any level within the Kesrouane Formation, locally redolomitising the Chouane Member dolostones and replacing the Nahr Ibrahim Member limestones. In this paper, we discuss the implications of diagenesis (especially dolomitisation) on the petroleum prospects of the Kesrouane Formation in Lebanon. The hydrothermal fault-related dolostones possess porosities of up to 20%, which result from intercrystalline and mouldic porosity enhancement. Porosities in the stratabound reflux dolostones (Early Jurassic) and limestones are much lower. The fact that most of the Jurassic system in onshore Lebanon was affected by meteoric diagenesis during the Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous and the Cenozoic may downgrade hydrocarbon prospectivity. However, offshore areas far from the meteoric realm may have been less (or not at all) affected by meteoric invasion. If effective seals are present there, these areas may host promising Jurassic reservoir units. We also review the prospectivity of unexposed Triassic potential reservoir units in onshore Lebanon (e. g. the "Qartaba" structure). By analogy with the Syrian portion of the Palmyride Basin, Triassic strata here may include both reservoir units and evaporite seals. [source]


    ANALYZING CORRELATIONS BETWEEN STREAM AND WATERSHED ATTRIBUTES,

    ABSTRACT: Bivariate correlation analysis has been widely used to explore relationships between stream and watershed attributes that have all been measured on the same set of watersheds or sampling locations. Researchers routinely test H0: ,= 0 for each correlation in a large table and then go on to discuss only those that are declared "significant." Such test results are inaccurate because no allowance is made for multiple testing, and also because the tests are not mutually independent. This paper reviews the Bonferroni approach to controlling the overall error rate in multiple testing and shows how the approach becomes impractical for large correlation tables. The Hotelling/Williams test is introduced for comparing two dependent correlations that share a variable, and numerical constraints for two such correlations are illustrated. References are also given for testing other hypothesized patterns among dependent correlations, and links to dependent correlation software are provided. The methods are illustrated for watershed and stream variables sampled in 23 small agricultural watersheds of the Willamette Valley, Oregon. [source]

    INTERRATER CORRELATIONS DO NOT ESTIMATE THE RELIABILITY OF JOB PERFORMANCE RATINGS

    Interrater correlations are widely interpreted as estimates of the reliability of supervisory performance ratings, and are frequently used to correct the correlations between ratings and other measures (e.g., test scores) for attenuation. These interrater correlations do provide some useful information, but they are not reliability coefficients. There is clear evidence of systematic rater effects in performance appraisal, and variance associated with raters is not a source of random measurement error. We use generalizability theory to show why rater variance is not properly interpreted as measurement error, and show how such systematic rater effects can influence both reliability estimates and validity coefficients. We show conditions under which interrater correlations can either overestimate or underestimate reliability coefficients, and discuss reasons other than random measurement error for low interrater correlations.     Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are being incorporated into archaeology as a technique to improve the understanding of spatial organization and the relationships among finds within specific areas. Although their use as a basic tool in predicting the location of archaeological sites or in assessing the extent of their catchment areas is relatively common, in general, they have less often been applied to the study of the spatial distribution of archaeological remains within individual deposits, and in particular to faunal assemblages. Despite this, they can prove essential to understanding dispersion and grouping patterns within deposits fully, and, together with various correlation analytical techniques, they provide valuable information about the economic organization of settlements and inhabitant lifeways. To demonstrate the potential of this methodology, a zooarchaeological GIS has been prepared for the Middle and Late Magdalenian and Azilian layers in El Mirón Cave (eastern Cantabria, Spain), and the spatial distribution patterns of various attributes of the archaeological record have been analysed. Significant conclusions in terms of type and duration of human occupation have been drawn. [source]


    Analysis of co-articulation regions for performance-driven facial animation

    Abstract A facial gesture analysis procedure is presented for the control of animated faces. Facial images are partitioned into a set of local, independently actuated regions of appearance change termed co-articulation regions (CRs). Each CR is parameterized by the activation level of a set of face gestures that affect the region. The activation of a CR is analyzed using independent component analysis (ICA) on a set of training images acquired from an actor. Gesture intensity classification is performed in ICA space by correlation to training samples. Correlation in ICA space proves to be an efficient and stable method for gesture intensity classification with limited training data. A discrete sample-based synthesis method is also presented.     Correlation of Tricuspid Annular Velocities With Invasive Hemodynamics in Pulmonary Hypertension

    The authors performed tissue Doppler imaging of the tricuspid annulus in patients with pulmonary hypertension to assess its correlation with invasive indices of right ventricular function. The study population consisted of 32 patients with suspected pulmonary hypertension who underwent pulsed tissue Doppler imaging of the tricuspid annulus and right heart catheterization. Peak systolic (Sa), early diastolic (Ea), and late diastolic (Aa) velocities of the lateral tricuspid annulus were measured and correlated with hemodynamic variables. Peak Sa demonstrated excellent correlation with hemodynamic variables, including cardiac index (r=0.78; P<.001), pulmonary vascular resistance (r=,0.79; P<.001), and transpulmonary gradient (r=,0.72; P<.001). Peak Sa <10 cm/s predicted cardiac index <2.0 L/min/m2 with 89% sensitivity and 87% specificity. In conclusion, tissue Doppler imaging of the tricuspid annulus is a complementary method to assess right ventricular function in pulmonary hypertensive patients. [source]


    Correlation of Density Pedestal Width and Neutral Penetration Length

    Abstract Pedestal studies in DIII-D and MAST find good correlation between the width of the H-mode density barrier and the neutral penetration length [1, 2]. These results suggest that the width may be set by the combined effects of neutrals and plasma transport. This paper is a report on fluid simulations of boundary plasma using the BOUT code[3] with a neutral source added. Thus both neutral and plasma physics are treated. The plasma transport is self-consistently driven by boundary turbulence due to the resistive X-point mode, while neutrals are described by a simple analytic model. The plasma profiles are evolved on the same time scale as the turbulence for the given heat source from the core plasma and particle source from the neutrals. For prescribed neutral profiles, we find the formation of a density pedestal inside the separatrix in the L-mode even though the calculated plasma diffusion coefficients are almost radially constant and without the formation of a temperature pedestal. These results support the hypothesis that particle fueling can provide the dominant control for the size of the H-mode density barrier.     Correlation of dystrophin,glycoprotein complex and focal adhesion complex with myosin heavy chain isoforms in rat skeletal muscle

    Abstract Aim:, The dystrophin,glycoprotein complex (DGC) and focal adhesion complex (FAC) are transmembrane structures in muscle fibres that link the intracellular cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix. DGC and FAC proteins are abundant in slow-type muscles, indicating the structural reinforcement which play a pivotal role in continuous force output to maintain posture for long periods. The aim of the present study was to examine the expression of these structures across fast-type muscles containing different myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform patterns which reflect the fatigue-resistant characteristics of skeletal muscle. Methods:, We measured the expression of dystrophin and ,1 integrin (representative proteins of DGC and FAC respectively) in plantaris, extensor digitorum longus, tibialis anterior, red and white portions of gastrocnemius, superficial portion of vastus lateralis and diaphragm, in comparison with soleus (SOL) and cardiac muscle from rats. Results:, The expression of dystrophin and ,1 integrin correlated positively with the percentage of type I, IIa and IIx MHC isoforms and negatively with that of type IIb MHC isoform in fast-type skeletal muscles, and their expression was abundant in SOL and cardiac muscle. Conclusion:, Our results support the idea that DGC and FAC are among the factors that explain the fatigue-resistant property not only of slow-type but also of fast-type skeletal muscles. [source]


    Correlation between the residual resistivity ratio and the power-law of the normal-state resistivity in MgB2

    Abstract MgB2 polycrystalline superconducting specimens were irradiated with several doses of ,-rays up to 100 MR. An increase in the normal state resistivity and a broadening of the resistive transition to the superconducting state were observed with increasing ,-irradiation dose. Although very small changes to the superconducting transition temperature were obtained after ,-irradiation, different temperature dependence of normal-state resistivity and different residual resistivity ratios, RRR were obtained for different doses. We have found a correlation between RRR and the power law dependence of resistivity, n as the irradiation dose increases. This correlation may be an indication that the electron-phonon interaction is important in these samples. These results are attributed to the disorder caused by ,-rays.     Reliability and validity of a structured interview guide for the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (SIGH-A)

    Abstract The Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, a widely used clinical interview assessment tool, lacks instructions for administration and clear anchor points for the assignment of severity ratings. We developed a Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (SIGH-A) and report on a study comparing this version to the traditional form of this scale. Experienced interviewers from three Anxiety Disorders research sites conducted videotaped interviews using both traditional and structured instruments in 89 participants. A subset of the tapes was co-rated by all raters. Participants completed self-report symptom questionnaires. We observed high inter-rater and test-retest reliability using both formats. The structured format produced similar but consistently higher (+ 4.2) scores. Correlation with a self-report measure of overall anxiety was also high and virtually identical for the two versions. We conclude that in settings where extensive training is not practical, the structured scale is an acceptable alternative to the traditional Hamilton Anxiety instrument.     Correlation between Musashi-1 and c-hairy-1 expression and cell proliferation activity in the developing intestine and stomach of both chicken and mouse

    Musashi-1 (Msi-1) is an RNA-binding protein that plays key roles in the maintenance of neural stem cell states and in their differentiation into neural cells. Msi-1 has also been proposed as a candidate marker gene of mammalian intestinal stem cells and their immediate lineages. In this study, we examined Msi-1 expression in the small intestine and the stomach of both chicken and mouse during embryonic, fetal and postnatal development. In addition, we analyzed the expression of c-hairy-1, a chicken homologue of mouse Hes1, and assessed the proliferative activity of the cells expressing both of these factors. Significantly, during the development of these digestive organs in both species Msi-1 expression showed dynamic changes, suggesting that it is important for digestive organ development, particularly for epithelial differentiation. Based on our observations of the expression patterns of Msi-1 and c-hairy-1 in the adult small intestine, we speculate that Msi-1 is also a stem cell marker of the chicken small intestinal epithelium.     Early and transient ontogenetic expression of the cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript peptide in the rat mesencephalon: Correlation with tyrosine hydroxylase expression

    Abstract The ontogeny of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) expression has been analyzed by immunohistochemistry in the mesencephalon of the rat central nervous system, and compared to the pattern of tyrosine hydroxylase- (TH-) expression. CART-producing neurons were first detected on the embryonic day 11 (E11) in the ventral mesencephalic vesicle. These neurons are among the first cells of the mantle layer to differentiate. From E13, a complementary pattern of distribution was observed, dividing the mantle layer into an external TH zone and an internal CART zone. Many TH-positive neurons were found to migrate from the neuroepithelium through the area containing the CART-immunoreactive neurons to settle more laterally. These TH cells exhibited prominent leading and trailing dendrites in the immediate vicinity of CART perikarya. On E16, the number of CART neurons appeared to diminish, and they were confined near the ventricle and around the fasciculus retroflexus. On E18 and E20, only the Edinger-Westphal nucleus exhibited a strong CART staining as described in the adult brain. Thus, the very early detection of CART during prenatal ontogeny led us to speculate that this peptide might have a role in the development of specific regions of the rat brain. In particular, our observations suggest that CART-expressing neurons might help the migration of the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     Nephroblastoma is a success of paediatric oncologic therapy.

    How further can we go?: Results of a cyto-histologic correlation study
    Abstract Nephroblastoma is a success of paediatric oncologic therapy, yet, there are still some cases where favourable response to preoperative chemotherapy is not achieved. Fine needle biopsy has the role of diagnostic confirmation and, idyllically of predicting a response to preoperative chemotherapy. To advance in this aim, we retrieved a total of 14 nephroblastomas, (seven male patients and seven female with a mean age of 44.4 months), diagnosed in our department by fine needle biopsy and submitted afterward to chemotherapy and nephrectomy, in the last 10 years. Correlation between cytologic features, (morphology, cell death, and proliferation (Ki-67 labelling index), and post chemotherapy tumour evaluation was done. Cytologic pattern per se was not predictive of histologic tumour classification (P = 0.6061). We did not find any correlation between the percentage of necrosis and apoptosis (P = 0.682) in cytologic smears and histologic regressive changes but when both these two criteria coexisted in cytologic blastemal component of nephroblastomas, this fact seemed to lead to a favourable response of the tumour to chemotherapy. When evaluation of Ki-67 labelling index was done in the blastematous component present in the smears, divergent results were obtained. The small number of cases prevented any firm conclusions. By summing up, our results support the idea that there are probably two types of blastema in nephroblastoma with different "suicide" potential and chemotherapeutic response. Further studies should be performed to stratify the influence of necrosis, apoptosis, and proliferation in chemosensivity of nephroblastomas. Diagn. Cytopathol. 2010. © 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.     Correlation between morphology and human telomerase gene amplification in bronchial brushing cells for the diagnosis of lung cancer

    Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of amplification of the human telomerase gene (TERC), as measured by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), in routine liquid-based cytological preparations from bronchial brushing specimens, and to assess the associations between TERC amplification, cytological diagnosis, and cytological morphology, in order to obtain further insight into these associations. Bronchial brushings from 102 patients with lung carcinoma (52 squamous-cell carcinomas, 22 adenocarcinomas, 28 small cell lung carcinomas) and 40 patients with nonmalignant disease were used. Amplification of TERC was performed using a commercially available two-color FISH probe, and slides were prepared for the SurePath liquid-based Pap test (LPT) using the same samples. Amplification of TERC was significantly associated with histological diagnoses (P < 0.05). Patients with lung cancer, and especially those with nonsmall cell lung cancer, had significantly higher percentages of cells with amplification of TERC than did patients with nonmalignant disease (P < 0.05). Comparing the FISH and LPT results, there was no significant difference in diagnostic sensitivity between the two methods (P > 0.05). However the difference in diagnostic sensitivity of the two methods for squamous-cell carcinoma was significant (P < 0.01). FISH can be performed on bronchial brushing specimens to detect amplification of TERC. This test may be an adjunct to cytology screening, especially in squamous-cell carcinoma, and may provide an indication of the potential of individual lesions to progress. Diagn.     Cytologic features of recurrent lymphoma involving the urinary bladder

    Abstract Recurrent lymphoma of the bladder only occasionally presents with genitourinary symptoms, and there are very few cases in the literature reporting the cytologic findings of involvement of the urinary bladder by lymphoma. We report the findings from a case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with immunoblastic morphology that was identified in a bladder barbotage specimen of a 77-year-old man who presented with recurrent urinary tract infection and hematuria. We describe the cytomorphological features of lymphoma cells in the urine and discuss the differential diagnoses.     Diagnosis of melanoma aspirates on ThinPrep®: The University of Michigan experience

    Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare the cytologic features of melanoma fine-needle aspirates (FNAs) prepared by ThinPrep® (TP) with those in conventional smears (CS) and to identify any diagnostic pitfalls. Fifty-one aspirates diagnosed as melanoma were obtained, 36 of which were prepared by both TP and CS. The preparations were evaluated for cellularity, cell aggregates, cellular appearance, melanin pigment, cytoplasmic, and nuclear features. Categorical data were analyzed by the chi-square test and continuous data by the Wilcoxin-signed rank test. Correlation was determined by Spearman's test for bivariate correlations (rho). Good correlation between the two methods was identified for the following features: cellularity, cell type, bi/multinucleated cells, cytoplasmic features, NC ratio, and presence of macronucleoli. TP exhibits coarser chromatin compared to CS (P = 0.005). Six of 36 CS contained large cellular groups; none of the TP contained them (P = 0.018). Twenty-five of 36 CS contained intranuclear inclusions as opposed to 12/36 TP (P < 0.001). The number of inclusions was significantly reduced on TP. The amount of intracellular melanin was the same with both techniques. Background melanin was markedly reduced on TP except when either trapped by fibrin or attached to cellular clusters (P = 0.006). Background blood was also markedly reduced on TP (P < 0.005). In summary, the cytological features of TP and CS for FNA evaluation of melanoma correlate well; however, one needs to be aware of the cytologic alterations introduced by TP. TP is a sufficient preparation method in the diagnosis of melanoma FNA aspirates when performed by clinicians.     CK19 mRNA expression in the bone marrow of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and its clinical significance

    SUMMARY The 5-year survival rate in resectable patients with esophageal cancer is only 20% to 36%. Regional relapse and distant metastasis are responsible for the failure of treatment and the majority of cancer-related deaths. Earlier detection of metastases, especially micrometastases, has the potential for more accurate risk stratification in subsequent therapy decisions. No effective techniques have yet been found to detect metastases in erroneously thought to have early stage disease. This study was designed to investigate the clinical significance of bone marrow micrometastases detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in patients with esophageal cancer. Expression of CK19 mRNA in the bone marrow of 61 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and 15 benign pulmonary and esophageal disease patients was assessed via RT-PCR. Correlation of CK19 mRNA expression to the clinicopathologic features and prognosis of the 61 patients was analyzed: 21.3% (13/61) were positive for expression of CK19 mRNA in patients with ESCC. No CK19 mRNA was detected of the 15 benign pulmonary and esophageal disease patients. CK19 mRNA expression did not correlate with the clinicopathologic features of the patients with ESCC, but patients with CK19 mRNA-positive bone marrow had earlier recurrence and shorter survival after surgery. In multivariate analysis, CK19 mRNA was found to be an independent predictor of a poor outcome. CK19 mRNA may be used as a molecular maker to detect bone marrow micrometastases in patients with ESCC and may help to select the proper therapy and predict the prognosis. [source]
