Selected AbstractsA CuIINiII Complex with Ethylenediamine: Crystal Structure and Ferromagnetic Behaviour of an Aqua-Bridged Heterometallic Chain Containing Ambidentate Ni(OAc)42, BlocksEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 22 2010Oksana V. Nesterova Abstract A one-pot reaction of copper powder and nickel and ammonium acetates in a CH3OH solution of ethylenediamine (en) yields a unique 1D aqua-bridged polymer [Cu(en)2(,2 -H2O)2Ni(OAc)4]n·4nH2O (1) with an ambidentate Ni(OAc)42, fragment that has not been previously characterized. The basic structural motif of 1 contains a previously unreported heterometallic M(,2 -H2O)M, aqua-bridge chain with alternating metal atoms. A complex system of N/O,H···O hydrogen bonds strengthens the polymeric chains and links them into a supramolecular three-dimensional network. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1 revealed a weak ferromagnetic coupling (J = 1.1 cm,1) between the paramagnetic copper(II) and nickel(II) ions, which is transmitted through the oxygen bridges. The reaction conditions involve the use of copper powder as the catalyst, eco-friendly ethanol as the solvent in the presence of pipecolinic acid as the ligand and ascorbic acid as the additive. The efficiency of this practical method was demonstrated in the synthesis of various anilines. Thus, the first nitrile type of monodentate ligand-mediated, "ligand-free-like" copper-catalyzed N -arylation procedure was established. Valsamaki Abstract An SPE method followed by GC-electron capture detection (ECD) with confirmation by MS for the trace determination of four pesticides considered as endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) in natural waters and sediments has been developed. Target analytes, fenarimol, fenvalerate, pendimethalin, and vinclozolin, belong to different chemical groups and are used mainly in agriculture. In the present study, analysis employs an offline SPE step for the extraction of the target analytes from natural waters. Sonication and subsequent SPE clean-up was used for extraction and purification of the sediment samples which were finally treated with activated copper powder. The type of SPE disk, eluents as well as solution parameters including pH value, and concentrations of salts and humic substances were examined for the efficiency of the method. The recoveries of all pesticides were in relatively high levels, ranging from 75 to 97% for waters and 71 to 84% for sediment samples. Both methods were applied to real water and sediment samples and the presence of the tested compounds was investigated. The cation, which lies on a mirror plane, is a typical dimethyldiphenylphosphonium ion. The structure shows a strong tendency towards segregation of the inorganic and organic parts of the structure into separate subspaces. The two-dimensional Cu,I sheet displays a pronounced subcell with pseudo-tetragonal symmetry that is broken by ordered vacancies on the Cu position. The symmetry is further reduced by the orientation of the interleaved organic counter-ion that is inclined with respect to the pseudo-mirror planes defined by the Cu,I sheet normal, perpendicular to the b axis.
