Identification based adaptive iterative learning controller

Abstract In recent years, more research in the control field has been in the area of self-learning and adaptable systems, such as a robot that can teach itself to improve its performance. One of the more promising algorithms for self-learning control systems is Iterative Learning Control (ILC), which is an algorithm capable of tracking a desired trajectory within a specified error limit. Conventional ILC algorithms have the problem of relatively slow convergence rate and adaptability. This paper suggests a novel approach by combining system identification techniques with the proposed ILC approach to overcome the aforementioned problems. The ensuing design procedure is explained and results are accrued from a number of simulation examples. A key point in the proposed scheme is the computation of gain matrices using the steepest descent approach. It has been found that the learning rule can be guaranteed to converge if certain conditions are satisfied. Star formation in the LMC: Comparative CCD observations of young stellar populations in two giant molecular clouds

Abstract This work deals with a CCD imaging study at optical and near-infrared wavelength oftwo giant molecular clouds (plus a control field) in the southern region of the Large Magellanic Cloud, one ofwhich shows multiple signs of star formation, whereas the other does not. The observational data from VLT FORS2 (R band) and NTT SOFI (Ks band) have been analyzed to derive luminosity functions and color-magnitude diagrams. The young stellar content of these two giant molecular clouds is compared and confirmed to be different, in the sense that the apparently "starless" cloud has so far formed only low-luminosity, low-mass stars (fainter than mKs , 16.5 mag, not seen by 2MASS), while the other cloud has formed both faint low-mass and luminous high-mass stars. The surface density excess oflow-luminosity stars (,2 per square arcmin) in the "starless" cloud with respect to the control field is about 20% whereas the excess is about a factor of 3 in the known star-forming cloud. Performance evaluation of GPON vs EPON for multi-service access

Abstract Recently both ITU and IEEE have standardized solutions for passive optical networks (PONs) operating at gigabit per second line rates and optimized for the transport of packet-based traffic to improve the efficiency of previously standardized broadband PONs, which used the ATM cell as the data transport unit. The efficiency and performance of PON systems depend on the transmission convergence layer and mainly on the implemented medium access protocol. Although the latter is not part of the standards and left to the implementer, the standards describe a set of control fields that constitute the tool-set for the media access control (MAC) operation. Though starting from a common and quite obvious basis, the two standards present significant differences with the legacy of Ethernet marking the IEEE approach, while the emphasis of ITU is on demanding services. In this paper we compare the efficiency and performance of the two systems assuming the implementation of as close as possible MAC protocols. The target is twofold: assess and compare the traffic handling potential of each of the two standards and identify the range of applications they can support. Useful insight can also be gained to the MAC tools that could be designed into the next generation extra large WDM PONs. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


A Subaru/Suprime-Cam wide-field survey of globular cluster populations around M87 , I. Observation, data analysis and luminosity function

ABSTRACT In this paper and a companion paper, we report on a wide-field imaging survey of the globular cluster (GC) populations around M87 carried out with Suprime-Cam on the 8.2-m Subaru telescope. Here, we describe the observations, data reduction and data analysis, and present luminosity functions of GC populations around M87 and NGC 4552, another luminous Virgo elliptical in our survey field. The imaging data were taken in the B, V and I bands with a sky coverage of extending from the M87 centre out to ,0.5 Mpc. GC candidates were selected by applying a colour criterion on the B,V and V,I diagram to unresolved objects, which greatly reduces contamination. The data from control fields taken with Subaru/Suprime-Cam were also analysed for subtraction of contamination in the GC sample. These control field data are compatible with those in the M87 field in terms of the filter set (BVI), limiting magnitudes and image quality, which minimize the possibility of introducing any systematic errors into the subtractive correction. We investigate GC luminosity functions (GCLFs) at distances , 10 arcmin (,45 kpc) from the host galaxy centre in detail. By fitting Gaussians to the GCLFs, the V -band turnover magnitude (VTO) is estimated to be 23.62 ± 0.06 and 23.56 ± 0.20 mag for the GC population in M87 and NGC 4552, respectively. The GCLF is found to be a function of GC colour; VTO of the red GC subpopulation (V,I > 1.1) is fainter than that of the blue GC subpopulation (V,I, 1.1) in both M87 and NGC 4552, as expected if the colour differences are primarily due to a metallicity effect, and the mass functions of the two subpopulations are similar. The radial dependence of the GCLF is also investigated for the GC population in M87. The GCLF of each subpopulation at 1 ,R, 5 arcmin is compared to that at 5 ,R, 10 arcmin, but no significant trend with distance is found in the shape of the GCLF. We also estimate GC-specific frequencies (SN) for M87 and NGC 4552. The SN of the M87 GC population is estimated to be 12.5 ± 0.8 within 25 arcmin. The SN value of the NGC 4552 GC population is estimated to be 5.0 ± 0.6 within 10 arcmin. [source]


Dust-enshrouded star formation in XMM-LSS galaxy clusters

Abstract In recent years, infrared studies of individual galaxy clusters at intermediate redshifts led to the identification of several luminous infrared galaxies (LIR > 1011 L,). These findings were interpreted as an evidence ofvigorous, dust-enshrouded star formation activity, hinting at the presence of an infrared Butcher-Oemler effect. In order to explore this effect, we have undertaken a statistical investigation based on a cluster sample drawn from the XMM-Newton Large Scale Structure survey (XMM-LSS) and exploiting the contiguous coverage of the XMM-LSS field by the Spitzer SWIRE legacy survey. We adopted a stacking technique to investigate the distribution of 24- , m sources out to the cluster periphery and compare it with the distribution of sources in a sample of control fields. Among putative cluster members, selected by means of photometric redshifts, we identified surprisingly high numbers of bright 24- , m sources toward intermediate redshift clusters (z > 0.3). Effect of short duration electromagnetic field exposures on rat mass

Abstract Daily preexposure and postexposure mass measurements of 65 rats (young males and females, old males) a proprietary pulsed wound healing field, pulsed electromagnetic field, (PEMF), or their control fields for 4 h/day for 21 days. Statistical analysis of mass changes over time showed that young rats exposed to PEMF lost more mass and recovered it more slowly compared to controls (2,4% more loss) than did older PEMF exposed rats or any 60 Hz exposed rats. We conclude that daily preexposure and postexposure mass measurements are needed to adequately assess the effects of electromagnetic fields on body mass.
