Selected AbstractsGCP auditors: hard to find,hard to develop,hard to keep: part III.QUALITY ASSURANCE JOURNAL, Issue 1 2001Continuous education, further development Abstract Clinical research is a dynamic and constantly changing discipline. Continuous education of good clinical practice (GCP) auditors is required to guarantee consistent and dependable audit results during their careers. Ongoing training should strive to increase the auditor's capabilities and skills, even beyond GCP. This should not only maintain the quality assurance (QA) auditor in a position to conduct audits according to state-of-the-art methodologies and regulations, but also promote her/his further career development. To be ,fit for purpose' does not only characterize processes meeting defined requirements, but also implies that QA auditors must be continuously trained (hence, ,be fit') to perform high-quality audit services (hence, ,the purpose'). ÇUBUKÇU phd Parental perceptions in the importance of dental care and preferences with regard to its provision while profiling the level of dental health knowledge of parents of leukaemic children were elicited. The setting was the Paediatric Dental Care Unit located in Medical Faculty. Data were collected by means of a structured interview, employing a questionnaire. Level of knowledge on both dental facts and preventive dentistry of the participants was insufficient. Major source of dental care was the resident paediatric dentist both in prior to (78.2%) and following (100%) diagnosis. Tooth extraction (17.6%) was the only treatment provided prior to diagnosis. Following diagnosis, 60 (69%) of these children had received operative dental treatment. The source of preventive advice was inconsistent. Parents appeared to place a high level of importance on their children's dental care and the preference for this to be provided within the hospitals in which the child has been treated. There is clearly a need to establish dental care units in hospitals in which treatment of childhood malignancy is provided. The provision for the future should be the continuous education of dentists, physicians and nurses who work in hospitals and public health services. [source] Company-based education programmes: what's the pay-off for employers?HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, Issue 4 2001Graeme Martin This article addresses the question of whether company-based programmes of education repay employer investment in terms of learning transfer to the workplace. Building on earlier work by the authors, we use an in-depth longitudinal case study of a long-standing programme of continuous education sponsored by the US-based NCR corporation in Scotland. As educators, we expected to find that the programme would have been associated with positive outcomes, based on the belief that 'embrained' or formal, abstract knowledge can be transferred to the workplace. We were aware, however, that research in this area has not been promising in demonstrating learning transfer, in part because such a process is mediated by the quality of the transfer climate. Drawing on survey data and in-depth interviewing of a sample cohort, we found that the programme of company-based education had significant implications for learning transfer. Surprisingly, however, transfer climate had little influence on the willingness of employees to use their knowledge to make improvements or generate innovations at work. Finally, we found that these data supported situated learning theory, stressing the importance of tacit knowledge, informal learning, the communal nature of workplace learning and the difficulties in evaluating learning transfer. We believe that these results have important implications for the literature on the evaluation of HRD interventions, for human resource development (HRD) specialists interested in developing programmes of so-called lifelong learning and for practitioners working in the area of organisational learning and learning organisations. [source] The Measurement of Success of Activity-Based Costing and Its Determinants: A Study within Canadian Federal Government Organizations,/L'évaluation Du Succès De La Comptabilité Par Activités Et Ses Déterminants: Étude D'Organismes Du Gouvernement Fédéral Du CanadaACCOUNTING PERSPECTIVES, Issue 3 2007Anne Fortin ABSTRACT This research first measures the success of activity-based costing (ABC) implementation within Canadian federal government organizations along five constructs, which are the use and frequency of use of the ABC information, decision actions taken, financial improvements, evaluation by management as to overall success, and a composite measure of the four constructs. Second, it identifies the determinants of ABC success. The success determinants used in this study are organizational culture, involvement of a champion, change process, commitment, controls, and continuous education. Measures of ABC success and determinants were obtained using a survey of managers who have participated in ABC implementation in Canadian federal government organizations. The study found that the benefits derived from ABC implementation within Canadian public sector organizations do not measure up to the efforts invested, although respondents consider that some financial improvements have resulted from the implementations. Controls and culture proved to be the two variables that significantly relate to ABC success. The results could have implications for policymaking organizations such as the Treasury Board Secretariat of Canada and the Office of the Comptroller General (OCG). The latter should question the benefits of investments made in management accounting best practices in the federal government. The OCG could also direct departments and agencies to the right environment (success determinants) to be put in place in order to ensure the success of ABC initiatives. RÉSUMÉ Les auteurs évaluent le succès de la mise en ,uvre de la comptabilité par activités (CPA) au sein d'organismes du gouvernement fédéral du Canada selon cinq paramètres, soit l'utilisation et la fréquence d'utilisation de l'information produite par la CPA, les mesures décisionnelles prises, les améliorations financières, l'évaluation du succès global par la direction et une mesure composite regroupant ces quatre paramètres. Ils définissent ensuite les déterminants du succès de la CPA. Les déterminants utilisés dans la présente étude sont la culture organisationnelle, l'intervention d'un défenseur, le processus de changement, l'engagement, les contrôles et la formation continue. Les auteurs obtiennent les critères d'évaluation et les déterminants du succès de la CPA en procédant à un sondage auprès de cadres ayant participé à la mise en ,uvre de la CPA dans des organismes du gouvernement fédéral du Canada. Ils constatent que les avantages découlant de cet exercice au sein des organismes du secteur public canadien ne sont pas à la hauteur des efforts investis, même si les répondants estiment en avoir tiré certaines améliorations financières. Il semble que les variables des contrôles et de la culture soient celles qui se rattachent de façon significative au succès de la CPA. Les résultats de l'étude pourraient avoir des conséquences pour les organismes responsables de l'élaboration des politiques comme le Secrétariat du Conseil du Trésor du Canada et le Bureau du contrôleur général (BCG). Ce dernier devrait s'interroger sur ce que rapportent les sommes investies par le gouvernement fédéral dans les pratiques de comptabilité de management les meilleures. [source] Quality control of bone marrow cytology; organization and over 7 years experience in the south-west NetherlandsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF LABORATORY HEMATOLOGY, Issue 6 2008A. A. M. ERMENS Summary To asses the quality of bone marrow cytology of hospital laboratories in the south-west Netherlands a proficiency testing program was implemented. Two sets of bone marrow and blood smears from two patients were sent to 20 hospital laboratories using a tight time schedule biannually. Required results consisted of differential counts of 500 bone marrow cells and 100 peripheral blood cells, together with the description of morphological abnormalities and final conclusions. Twice a year the collected review data were discussed in a plenary session which was also used for continuous education. Over the past 7 years 30 bone marrow samples were evaluated. The coefficient of variations of specific cells counts was large. The amount of correct conclusions ranged from 12% to 100% (median: 61%). Participant attendance of the meetings was 90,100%. The total cost of this scheme of proficiency testing approximately amounted ,7000 per year. The presented formulae for both proficiency testing and haematopathological/cytological education is feasible and fulfilled the need of the participants. [source] Nurses' experiences of caring encounters with older people living in Swedish nursing homesINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF OLDER PEOPLE NURSING, Issue 1 2006Lars Westin MNSc Aim., The aim of the study was to describe and interpret the meaning of nurses' experiences of caring encounters with residents in nursing homes. Background., Life for residents in nursing homes can be characterized as a process of decreased physical and psychological resources. Therefore, encounters with nurses are important activities for providing meaning and security for the residents. Research in this field has previously focused on communication, attitudes and job satisfaction, but gives limited knowledge about what the human encounters in this context mean for the nurses. Method., A hermeneutic method was used in this study. Interviews were conducted with 14 nurses from two nursing homes about their experiences of caring encounters. The transcribed interview texts were interpreted as a whole. Results., In the interpretation of the text concerning the meaning of nurses' experiences of encounters with resident's four themes and 11 subthemes emerged. The comprehensive interpretation mainly showed possible ways available being present, being significant and being aware of opportunities for the nurse to find meaning in the encounter with the resident, but impossible ways as being inadequately were also revealed. Conclusion., This study shows the importance of caring encounters between nurses and residents in nursing homes. The good encounters provide various possible ways for nurses to find meaning and a sense of communion with residents. However, bad encounters, described as being inadequate, were found to inhibit nurses from finding meaning in their encounters with residents. Relevance to clinical practice., Meeting the needs of older people in nursing homes requires special knowledge about the importance of the caring encounter. Therefore, nurses in this care context need supervision and continuous education in order to gain relevant knowledge about the meaning of caring encounters for themselves and residents. [source] The role and duties of scientific medical societies: The German Society of Dermatology from the member's perspectiveJOURNAL DER DEUTSCHEN DERMATOLOGISCHEN GESELLSCHAFT, Issue 1 2010Peter Hensen Summary Background: The German Society of Dermatology is a scientific medical society that represents the interests of German-speaking dermatology. One recommendation of a strategic planning mission was to increase the involvement of society members. Methods: Based on an empirical approach (questionnaire survey) a systematic member inquiry was performed which focused on the motives for membership, the image of the society,the use of provided services,and expectations and needs. Items regarding profession and health politics, continuous education and specialist training, and scientific representation and research promotion were considered in equal measure. Results: In total, 931 usable questionnaires were available with a response rate of 28.4%. Various single results could be integrated in a subsequent strategic dialogue. The German Society of Dermatology is regarded as active and powerful in scientific issues and promotion of research. However, numerous expectations have been expressed to strengthen future activities in professional and health care related issues. Needs and demands differ if members are scientifically active or rather not. Conclusions: A scientific society in general acts in a permanent area of conflict and has to deal with multiple positions and interests. Thereby members' needs and demands may vary dependent on individual and professional backgrounds. Members who are not scientifically active should be more integrated in the society while at the same time the society's aims should be coordinated with that of the Berufsverband (organization of practicing dermatologists). Better networking is required both within the society and with outside groups. In addition, the primary aims and objectives of the society should be made even clearer to all interested parties. [source] Thiopental pharmacokinetics in newborn infants: a case report of overdoseACTA PAEDIATRICA, Issue 10 2009Elisabeth Norman Abstract Thiopental may be used for sedation before intubation in newborn infants. A boy, born at 33 weeks of gestation (gw); birth weight 2435 g, was prescribed thiopental 3 mg/kg before intubation. He developed temporary hypotension and oxygen desaturation, and remained unconscious for longer than expected with a suppressed electroencephalography for 48 h. Serum thiopental concentration was 82, 59, 42 and 32 ,mol/L after 20 min and 6, 24 and 68 h respectively. Serum concentrations from five newborn infants at the same time points after intubation with the same thiopental dose were used as reference values, and indicated a 10-fold overdose in the index case. The cause of the overdose could not be identified. The infant recovered; cerebral magnetic resonance imaging at the age of 42 gw and psychomotor development at 2 years were normal. These results show that thiopental concentrations are variable in neonates and there is a high risk of dosage error as no specific paediatric formulation is available. Conclusion:, Well-designed procedures and continuous education are required to prevent errors and adverse events during drug delivery to newborn infants. To develop a safe method of administration for thiopental, an extended pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic study in neonates is warranted. [source] |
