Selected AbstractsEstimating the mean speed of laminar overland flow using dye injection-uncertainty on rough surfacesEARTH SURFACE PROCESSES AND LANDFORMS, Issue 4 2001David Dunkerley Abstract A common method for estimating mean flow speeds in studies of surface runoff is to time the travel of a dye cloud across a measured flow path. Motion of the dye front reflects the surface flow speed, and a correction must be employed to derive a value for the profile mean speed, which is always lower. Whilst laminar flow conditions are widespread in the interrill zone, few data are available with which to establish the relationship linking surface and profile mean speeds, and there are virtually none for the flow range 100,<,Re,<,500 (Re,=,Reynolds number) which is studied here. In laboratory experiments on a glued sand board, mean flow speeds were estimated from both dye speeds and the volumetric flow relation v,=,Q/wd with d measured using a computer-controlled needle gauge at 64 points. In order to simulate conditions applicable to many dryland soils, the board was also roughened with plant litter and with ceramic tiles (to simulate surface stone cover). Results demonstrate that in the range 100,<,Re,<,500, there is no consistent relation between surface flow speeds and the profile mean. The mean relationship is v,=,0·56 vsurf, which departs significantly from the theoretical smooth-surface relation v,=,0·67 vsurf, and exhibits a considerable scatter of values that show a dependence on flow depth. Given the inapplicability of any fixed conversion factor, and the dependence on flow depth, it is suggested that the use of dye timing as a method for estimating v be abandoned in favour of precision depth measurement and the use of the relation v,=,Q/wd, at least within the laminar flow range tested. Walsh Leg muscles were occluded (33 kPa) prior to exercise to determine whether the induced metabolic changes, and reactive hyperaemia upon occlusion release just prior to the exercise, would accelerate the subsequent oxygen consumption (V,O2) response. Eight subjects performed double bouts (6 min duration, 6 min rest in-between) of square wave leg cycle ergometry both below and above their lactate threshold (LT). Prior to exercise, large blood pressure cuffs were put around the upper thighs. Occlusion durations were 0 min (control), 5 min and 10 min. Ischaemia was terminated within 5 s prior to exercise onset. Heart rate, V,O2, ventilatory rate (V,E), electromyogram (EMG) and haemoglobin/myoglobin (Hb/Mb) saturation were recorded continuously. Single exponential modelling demonstrated that, compared to control (time constant = 53.9 ± 13.9 s), ischaemia quickened the V,O2 response (P < 0.05) for the first bout of exercise above LT (time constant = 48.3 ± 14.5 s) but not to any other exercise bout below or above LT. The 3-6 min integrated EMG (iEMG) slope was correlated to the 3-6 min V,O2 slope (r = 0.73). Hb/Mb saturation verified the ischaemia but did not show a consistent relation to the V,O2 time course. Reactive hyperaemia induced a faster V,O2 response for work rates above LT. The effect, while significant, was not large considering the expected favourable metabolic and circulatory changes induced by ischaemia. [source] COLOR and CHLOROPHYLL CONTENT CHANGES of MINIMALLY PROCESSED KIWIFRUITJOURNAL OF FOOD PROCESSING AND PRESERVATION, Issue 1 2000MARÍA ASUNCIÓN LEUNDA A combined factors preservation technology involving blanching and vacuum solutes (sucrose, potassium sorbate, ascorbic and citric acids, zinc chloride) impregnation was proposed to minimize color changes in minimally processed kiwifruit slices during one month storage. Atmospheric impregnation was also studied in order to compare both impregnation techniques. A Box-Behnken design was adopted and second order polynomial models were computed for different storage times to relate some process variables (blanching time, zinc content, storage temperature) to a color function (Brown Index). As the storage time increased, the response surfaces for vacuum treated fruits were vertically displaced to greater Brown Index values while the response surface behavior for atmospheric impregnated fruits were less dependent on storage time. For vacuum treated fruits, combinations of blanching and addition of zinc chloride improved the color of the finished product at all storage temperatures assayed, but these treatments were detrimental for atmospheric impregnated fruits, increasing significantly the Brown Index values. After storage, total chlorophyll had been degraded between 70 and 90% depending on the pretreatments. There did not appear to be any consistent relation between the changes which occurred in the total chlorophyll content and color. Anderson Background:, Inadequate anaesthesia, with somatic/autonomic response or awareness, is often revealed at intubation and surgical incision. Anaesthetic depth monitors should be able to prevent this risk. This explorative study examined the ability of the cerebral state monitor to predict autonomic/somatic responses to incision. Methods:, Forty-two ASA I,II day-surgical patients [19 men and 23 females; mean age 52 (29,79) years, mean weight 77 (50,118) kg] were induced clinically with fentanyl/propofol with sevoflurane after placement of the laryngeal mask airway. The cerebral state index (CSIÔ) was blindly recorded 4 min prior to and 4 min after incision. Results:, During the 4 min prior to incision, the mean CSIÔ was 45 (16,62) and increased by 9 (,13,40) when the mean value for the first 4 min after incision was subtracted from the value prior to incision, corresponding to a relative change of 21% (,21,118). The change in CSIÔ did not show any consistent relation to the value before incision. Five patients showed minor movements after incision and six patients had > 25% increase in blood pressure. Neither CSIÔ nor the change in index differed between patients who did or did not respond somatically or autonomically to incision. The last CSIÔ value just prior to incision was 44 for non-responders and 40 and 42 for somatic and autonomic responders, respectively. Conclusion:, The CSIÔ in the majority of patients was within acceptable ranges during clinically adjusted anaesthesia prior to incision but seems not to be able to reliably predict an autonomic or somatic response to incision. QUINLAN Summary.,Background:,Venography is commonly used to compare the efficacy of different thromboprophylaxis strategies for preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients undergoing total hip replacement (THR) or total knee replacement (TKR). Methods:,We explored the relation between asymptomatic DVT and symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing THR or TKR treated with standard doses of enoxaparin (30 mg b.i.d. or 40 mg o.d.) by comparing the incidence of asymptomatic DVT in venographic studies with the incidence of symptomatic VTE in studies where venography was not performed. Results:,In 10 venographic studies involving 5796 patients, the incidence of asymptomatic DVT after THR was 13.2% [95% CI, 12.2,14.2%] and after TKR was 38.1% (95% CI, 35.5,40.8%). In two studies involving 3500 patients who did not undergo venography, the 90-day incidence of symptomatic VTE after THR was 2.7% (95% CI, 2.1,3.4%) and after TKR was 1.8% (95% CI, 0.9,2.7%). For every symptomatic VTE in THR studies where venography was not performed there were five asymptomatic DVTs in the venographic studies; for TKR, the ratio was 1:21. The incidence of asymptomatic DVT and the symptomatic VTE/asymptomatic DVT ratio was influenced by the venogram reading committee (Gothenburg vs. Hamilton: total DVT after THR, 19.5% vs. 8.7%, P < 0.0001; for TKR, 42.7% vs. 27.2%, P < 0.0001). Conclusions:,Comparisons across trials show a consistent relation between asymptomatic venographic DVT in patients undergoing elective THR or TKR surgery and symptomatic VTE in patients not undergoing venography. Differences exist in the strength of the relation depending on the type of surgery and the venogram reading committee. Miller The current study attempts to provide greater precision in understanding how personality is related to antisocial behavior. Specifically, we examined the relations between the facets (subordinate traits) from three domains (superordinate dimensions): Neuroticism, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness, of the Five Factor Model and five outcome variables: stability of conduct problems, variety of conduct problems, onset of conduct problems, aggression, and antisocial personality disorder symptoms. These relations were examined in a community sample of 481 individuals. These three personality dimensions were chosen for exploration due to their consistent relations, at the domain level, with antisocial behaviors. The results from this study suggest that the facets from the dimension of Agreeableness are the most consistently related to all five outcomes. However, the facets from all three domains made significant contributions. Overall, three personality traits stood out as being the strongest and most consistent predictors: low straightforwardness, low compliance, and low deliberation.
