Selected AbstractsPreparation of undoped and indium doped ZnO thin films by pulsed laser deposition methodCRYSTAL RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY, Issue 12 2005B. Kotlyarchuk Abstract An original modification of the standard Pulse Laser Deposition (PLD) method for preparing both undoped and indium doped zinc oxide (ZnO:In) thin films at low substrate temperature is proposed. This preparation method does not demand any further post-deposition annealing treatment of the grown films. The developed method allows to grow thin films at low substrate temperature that prevents them from the considerable loss of their intrinsic electrical and optical properties. The influence of deposition parameters on the electrical and optical parameters of the undoped and the indium doped ZnO thin films is also analysed. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Comparison of the Heavy Metal Biosorption Capacity of Active, Heat-Inactivated and NaOH-Treated Phanerochaete chrysosporium BiosorbentsENGINEERING IN LIFE SCIENCES (ELECTRONIC), Issue 1 2004E. Güri Abstract Three different kinds of Phanerochaete chrysosporium (NaOH-treated, heat-inactivated and active) biosorbent were used for the removal of Cd(II) and Hg(II) ions from aquatic systems. The biosorption of Cd(II) and Hg(II) ions on three different forms of Phanerochaete chrysosporium was studied in aqueous solutions in the concentration range of 50,700 mg/L. Maximum biosorption capacities of NaOH-treated, heat-inactivated and active Phanerochaete chrysosporium biomass were found to be 148.37,mg/g, 78.68,mg/g and 68.56,mg/g for Cd(II) as well as 224.67,mg/g, 122.37,mg/g and 88.26,mg/g for Hg(II), respectively. For Cd(II) and Hg(II) ions, the order of affinity of the biosorbents was arranged as NaOH-treated,> heat-inactivated,>,active. The order of the amount of metal ions adsorbed was established as Hg(II),>,Cd(II) on a weight basis, and as Cd(II),>,Hg(II) on a molar basis. Biosorption equilibriums were established in about 60,min. The effect of the pH was also investigated, and maximum rates of biosorption of metal ions on the three different forms of Phanerochaete chrysosporium were observed at pH,6.0. The reusability experiments and synthetic wastewater studies were carried out with the most effective form, i.e., the NaOH-treated Phanerochaete chrysosporium biomass. It was observed that the biosorbent could be regenerated using 10,mM HCl solution, with a recovery of up to 98%, and it could be reused in five biosorption-desorption cycles without any considerable loss in biosorption capacity. The alkali-treated Phanerochaete chrysosporium removed 73% of Cd(II) and 81% of Hg(II) ions from synthetic wastewater. [source] Optimisation of hard pretzel productionINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, Issue 3 2007Ni Yao Summary Absence of a thorough understanding of the baking conditions on hard pretzel quality has resulted in considerable loss of production and on productivity. Baking time, oven zone 1 temperature, drying time and kiln drying temperature were identified as important factors affecting pretzel quality in modern pretzel production, from a total of eleven factors following a screening experiment design. A central composite circumscribe design was then employed to optimise these four variables. The test for lack of fit was not significant (P < 0.05) for the responses, except for colour a* values. The analysis of variance of the responses indicated that models explained 99%, 91% and 87% variability for moisture content, ,Eab and pasting time, respectively. The four variables were optimised when pretzel moisture content, ,Eab and pasting time were considered simultaneously using desirability function approach. Validation experiment results revealed that the two most important qualities of pretzel, moisture content and ,Eab could be reliably predicted. [source] Formulations generated from ethanol-based proliposomes for delivery via medical nebulizersJOURNAL OF PHARMACY AND PHARMACOLOGY: AN INTERNATI ONAL JOURNAL OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE, Issue 7 2006Abdelbary M. A. Elhissi Multilamellar and oligolamellar liposomes were produced from ethanol-based soya phosphatidylcholine proliposome formulations by addition of isotonic sodium chloride or sucrose solutions. The resultant liposomes entrapped up to 62% of available salbutamol sulfate compared with only 1.23% entrapped by conventionally prepared liposomes. Formulations were aerosolized using an air-jet nebulizer (Pari LC Plus) or a vibrating-mesh nebulizer (Aeroneb Pro small mesh, Aeroneb Pro large mesh, or Omron NE U22). All vibrating-mesh nebulizers produced aerosol droplets having larger volume median diameter (VMD) and narrower size distribution than the air-jet nebulizer. The choice of liposome dispersion medium had little effect on the performance of the Pari nebulizer. However, for the Aeroneb Pro small mesh and Omron NE U22, the use of sucrose solution tended to increase droplet VMD, and reduce aerosol mass and phospholipid outputs from the nebulizers. For the Aeroneb Pro large mesh, sucrose solution increased the VMD of nebulized droplets, increased phospholipid output and produced no effect on aerosol mass output. The Omron NE U22 nebulizer produced the highest mass output (approx. 100%) regardless of formulation, and the delivery rates were much higher for the NaCl-dispersed liposomes compared with sucrose-dispersed formulation. Nebulization produced considerable loss of entrapped drug from liposomes and this was accompanied by vesicle size reduction. Drug loss tended to be less for the vibrating-mesh nebulizers than the jet nebulizer. The large aperture size mesh (8,m) Aeroneb Pro nebulizer increased the proportion of entrapped drug delivered to the lower stage of a twin impinger. This study has demonstrated that liposomes generated from proliposome formulations can be aerosolized in small droplets using air-jet or vibrating-mesh nebulizers. In contrast to the jet nebulizer, the performance of the vibrating-mesh nebulizers was greatly dependent on formulation. The high phospholipid output produced by the nebulizers employed suggests that both air-jet and vibrating-mesh nebulization may provide the potential of delivering liposome-entrapped or solubilized hydrophobic drugs to the airways. Schwarz Abstract Applying Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) as medical coating has become well established since large scale plasma processes like Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation and Deposition (PIII&D) are available. Now the focus of research lies on systematic modification of certain biological relevant properties and the most recent field of interest turned to generating antimicrobial behaviour. This is desirable for medical tools as well as for different types of medical implants. Since silver and copper are known to provide a bactericidal effect, one tries to introduce clusters of these noble metals into the carbon matrix. The basic principle of the method presented is to convert a metal containing polymer film into DLC by ion bombardment. In this paper the hydrogenated DLC matrix is characterized and the evolution of the metal particles is studied. By means of film composition (RBS/ERD), bonding structure (Raman spectroscopy) and hardness (nanoindentation), the dependency of these material properties on ion species, energy and fluence is investigated. TEM imaging is used to visualize the film structure. Upon ion irradiation of the polymer films, increased density and considerable loss of hydrogen can be observed, which both are controlled by ion fluence and mass. The crosslinking of the carbon network, caused by hydrogen drive out as well as atomic displacements in collision cascades, results in the formation of a-C:H. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Endoscopic Gastric Submucosal Transplantation of Islets (ENDO-STI): Technique and Initial Results in Diabetic PigsAMERICAN JOURNAL OF TRANSPLANTATION, Issue 11 2009G. J. Echeverri The results of transplantation of human donor islets into the portal vein (PV) in patients with diabetes are encouraging. However, there are complications, for example, hemorrhage, thrombosis and an immediate loss of islets through the ,instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction' (IBMIR). The gastric submucosal space (GSMS) offers potential advantages. Islets were isolated from adult pigs. Recipient pigs were made diabetic by streptozotocin. Donor islets were injected into the GSMS through a laparotomy (Group 1A, n = 4) or endoscopically (Group 1B, n = 8) or into the PV through a laparotomy (Group 2, n = 3). The pigs were followed for a maximum of 28 days. Monitoring of C-peptide in Group 1 indicated that there was minimal immediate loss of islets whereas in Group 2 there was considerable loss from IBMIR. In Group 1, there were significant reductions in mean blood glucose and mean exogenous insulin requirement between pretransplantation and 20 days posttransplantation. In Group 2, there was no significant reduction in either parameter. Insulin-positive cells were seen in the GSMS in Group 1, but not in the liver in Group 2. Endoscopic gastric submucosal transplantation of islets (ENDO-STI) offers a minimally invasive and quick approach to islet transplantation, avoids IBMIR and warrants further exploration. [source] Foraging geese, vegetation loss and soil degradation in an Arctic salt marshAPPLIED VEGETATION SCIENCE, Issue 1 2002Robert L. Jefferies Abstract. The North American mid-continent population of Lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens L.) has increased by ca. 7% per year, largely as a result of geese feeding on agricultural crops in winter and on migration. We describe the long-term effects of increasing numbers of geese at an arctic breeding ground (La Pérouse Bay, Manitoba) on intertidal salt-marsh vegetation. Between 1985 and 1999 goose grubbing caused considerable loss of graminoid vegetation along transects in intertidal marshes. Loss of vegetation led to bare sediment with a plant cover of less than 2%. Changes in vegetation could not be described by simple linear, geometric or exponential functions; most losses occurred between 1988 and 1990 and losses were staggered in time between individual transects, some of which had all vegetation removed. Between 1979 and 1999 the standing crop in July in remaining intact heavily-grazed swards of Puccinellia phry-ganodes and Carex subspathacea fell from 40,60 g m -2 to 20,30 g m -2. Intense grazing on remaining patches of sward has restricted growth of these clonal forage plants and hypersalinity of bare sediments has precluded re-establishment of vegetation. Between 1989 and 1993 numbers of faecal droppings in grazed plots reached maximum values of 15,22 droppings m -2 wk -1. Since then peak values have remained at less than 13 droppings m -2 wk -1. The loss of vegetation and changes in soil conditions have resulted in the establishment of an alternative stable state (hypersaline bare sediment). [source] Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of 2-Mercapto-1,3-benzothiazole Derivatives with Potential Antimicrobial ActivityARCHIV DER PHARMAZIE, Issue 10 2009Carlo Franchini Abstract The enhancement of bacterial resistance of pathogens to currently available antibiotics constitutes a serious public health threat. So, intensive efforts are underway worldwide to develop new antimicrobial agents. To identify compounds with a potent antimicrobial profile, we designed and synthesized low molecular weight 2-mercaptobenzothiazole derivatives 2a,2l and 3a,3l. Both series were screened for in-vitro antibacterial activity against the representative panel of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria strains. The biological screening identified compounds 2e and 2l as the most active ones showing an interesting antibacterial activity with MIC values of 3.12 ,g/mL against Staphylococcus aureus and 25 ,g/mL against Escherichia coli, respectively. The replacement of the S-H by the S-Bn moiety resulted in considerable loss of the antibacterial action of the 3a,3l series. The antibiotic action of compounds 2e and 2l was also investigated by testing their activity against some clinical isolates with different antimicrobial resistance profile. Moreover, the involvement of the NorA efflux pump in the antibacterial activity of our molecules was evaluated. Finally, in this paper, we also describe the cytotoxic activity of the most interesting compounds by MTS assay against HeLa and MRC-5 cell lines. [source] Pathogenicity of Fusarium verticillioides and Fusarium oxysporum on Pinus nigra seedlings in northwest SpainFOREST PATHOLOGY, Issue 2 2008P. Martín-Pinto Summary Fusarium verticillioides may be responsible for causing significant damping-off damage similar to that incited by F. oxysporum on forest seedlings, resulting in considerable losses in nurseries in northwest of Spain. Traditionally, F. oxysporum has been considered the most important agent of this disease in Spanish forest nurseries. However, recent studies have showed that F. verticillioides also has been frequently isolated from diseased plants. This has increased the necessity for a more comprehensive knowledge of the behaviour and pathogenicity of both Fusarium spp. isolated from these sites. The effect of Fusarium spp. on seed germination and on seedling mortality was analysed by inoculating the fungus at seeding. The in vitro growth of the two species was studied and is discussed in relation to in vivo virulence. Both species caused a reduction in seed germination and an increase in seedling mortality. Mortality caused by F. verticillioides treatments occurred sooner than that for F. oxysporum and the growth rate of F. verticillioides was also greater. Myojin ABSTRACT:, The effects of blanching, freezing, and frozen storage on the retention of radical-scavenging activity (RSA), total phenolics, and ascorbic acid in bitter gourd were investigated. Blanching of sliced bitter gourd resulted in considerable losses of RSA and total phenolics, and most extensively, of ascorbic acid. In the subsequent frozen storage at ,18 °C, RSA and total phenolic content of unblanched and blanched bitter gourd underwent little change for 90 d then gradually declined, but at ,40 °C, they practically remained unchanged throughout the entire storage period. On the contrary, ascorbic acid content of both unblanched and blanched bitter gourd decreased abruptly at the early stage in frozen storage. The results show that blanching of bitter gourd improves the retention of RSA and total phenolics during subsequent frozen storage but markedly aggravated loss of ascorbic acid. Finally, it is to be noted that RSA, total phenolics, and ascorbic acid originally contained in the raw bitter gourd were overall best retained by quick freezing followed by frozen storage at ,40 °C without preceding blanching. Joller Summary Diarrhoea in newborn and weaned pigs caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) expressing F4 fimbriae leads to considerable losses in pig production. In this study, we refined the mapping of the receptor locus for ETEC F4ab/F4ac adhesion (F4bcR) by joint analysis of Nordic and Swiss data. A total of 236 pigs from a Nordic experimental herd, 331 pigs from a Swiss experimental herd and 143 pigs from the Swiss performing station were used for linkage analysis. Genotyping data of six known microsatellite markers, two newly developed markers (MUC4gt and HSA125gt) and an intronic SNP in MUC4 (MUC4-8227) were used to create the linkage map. The region for F4bcR was refined to the interval SW207,S0075 on pig chromosome 13. The most probable position of F4bcR was in the SW207,MUC4 region. The order of six markers was supported by physical mapping on the BAC fingerprint contig from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Thus, the region for F4bcR could be reduced from 26 to 14 Mb.
