Selected AbstractsA study on the lumped preconditioner and memory requirements of FETI and related primal domain decomposition methodsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR NUMERICAL METHODS IN ENGINEERING, Issue 13 2008Yannis Fragakis Abstract In recent years, domain decomposition methods (DDMs) have emerged as advanced solvers in several areas of computational mechanics. In particular, during the last decade, in the area of solid and structural mechanics, they reached a considerable level of advancement and were shown to be more efficient than popular solvers, like advanced sparse direct solvers. The present contribution follows the lines of a series of recent publications on the relationship between primal and dual formulations of DDMs. In some of these papers, the effort to unify primal and dual methods led to a family of DDMs that was shown to be more efficient than the previous methods. The present paper extends this work, presenting a new family of related DDMs, thus enriching the theory of the relations between primal and dual methods, with the primal methods, which correspond to the dual DDM that uses the lumped preconditioner. The paper also compares the numerical performance of the new methods with that of the previous ones and focuses particularly on memory requirement issues related to the use of the lumped preconditioner, suggesting a particularly memory-efficient formulation. [source] Parasitism of cotton leafworm Alabama argillacea eggs by Trichogramma pretiosum in commercial cotton fieldsJOURNAL OF APPLIED ENTOMOLOGY, Issue 7 2010C. S. Bastos Abstract Release of natural enemies in commercial fields is challenging and has been inconsistent in the results achieved. This work discusses the augmentative releases of Trichogramma pretiosum to control the cotton leafworm (CLW) Alabama argillacea and also examines the parasitoid,host interaction under grower field conditions. The treatments consisted of fields with and without releases of T. pretiosum set up in Primavera do Leste and Campo Verde Counties, MT, Brazil, during three different seasons (2003 and 2004 dry and 2004 regular summer seasons). Trichogramma wasps were weekly released in the treated fields throughout the entire sampling period (14,15 week period) at a rate of 100 000 wasps per hectare. One-way repeated measures analysis of variance was performed for the number of parasitized eggs, followed by a meta-analysis procedure to determine the contribution of T. pretiosum release on overall parasitism. In addition, regression analysis was conducted with each season's data sets to study the relationship of the host density and parasitism response by T. pretiosum. The overall results of Trichogramma augmentative releases did not result in significant increase of CLW egg parasitism beyond the natural parasitism in the areas studied. However, based on Cohen's d effect sizes from the meta-analysis, the parasitism rate was greater in fields under T. pretiosum releases during four out of 15 weeks surveyed. The parasitism of CLW eggs by T. pretiosum exhibited host density-dependence only in one out of three seasons surveyed. These findings are encouraging as they are evidence that T. pretiosum is able to maintain a considerable level of parasitism under commercial field conditions, highlighting their potential value in large-scale commercial areas of cotton as previously found at the small and diverse farming scale. Future studies should address the potential of early-season, low density releases of the parasitoid. [source] SENSORY CHARACTERISTICS OF TRADITIONAL FIELD GROWN TOMATO GENOTYPES IN SOUTHERN ITALYJOURNAL OF FOOD QUALITY, Issue 6 2007FIORELLA SINESIO ABSTRACT This study was conducted with the aim to characterize the diversity of fruit sensory quality of traditional tomato genotypes, grown in open fields, by means of descriptive profile analysis. It gives the results from sensory profiling of fresh tomato genotypes San Marzano, Vesuviano, Corbarino and Sorrento, originating from Southern Italy, and their respective commercial hybrids over 3 years of harvesting. The effects of genotypes, year of production (2002, 2003, 2004) and fields located in different geographical areas on sensory data were analyzed using principal component analysis and multivariate analysis of variance partial least square regression. For most sensory characteristics, the greatest variation was caused by differences in genotypes, suggesting that there was considerable level of genetic diversity. Minor effects were given to year of harvest and experimental fields. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Tomato is one of the most frequently consumed vegetables in many countries. Italy is one of the main tomato producers in the world, where the genetic variability among traditional tomato genotypes, hybrid and wild varieties in terms of variability in shape, dimension and sensorial attributes is enormous. A feasible area of improvement of tomato production is toward the increase or changing the original flavor. The knowledge of the effect of variety and season on sensory-perceived quality and the selection by breeding of genotypes with improved aroma and flavor profile is a tool to better orientate the tomato production. [source] The sugar porter gene family of Laccaria bicolor: function in ectomycorrhizal symbiosis and soil-growing hyphaeNEW PHYTOLOGIST, Issue 2 2008Mónica Fajardo López Summary ,,Formation of ectomycorrhizas, a symbiosis with fine roots of woody plants, is one way for soil fungi to overcome carbohydrate limitation in forest ecosystems. ,,Fifteen potential hexose transporter proteins, of which 10 group within three clusters, are encoded in the genome of the ectomycorrhizal model fungus Laccaria bicolor. For 14 of them, transcripts were detectable. ,,When grown in liquid culture, carbon starvation resulted in at least twofold higher transcript abundances for seven genes. Temporarily elevated transcript abundance after sugar addition was observed for three genes. Compared with the extraradical mycelium, ectomycorrhiza formation resulted in a strongly enhanced expression of six genes, of which four revealed their highest observed transcript abundances in symbiosis. A function as hexose importer was proven for three of them. Only three genes, of which just one was expressed at a considerable level, revealed a reduced transcript content in mycorrhizas. ,,From gene expression patterns and import kinetics, the L. bicolor hexose transporters could be divided into two groups: those responsible for uptake of carbohydrates by soil-growing hyphae, for improved carbon nutrition, and to reduce nutrient uptake competition by other soil microorganisms; and those responsible for efficient hexose uptake at the plant,fungus interface. Design Prospective longitudinal observational study. Setting Gynaecology unit in a UK teaching hospital. Sample Between 1 January 1997 and 31 December 1998, eight hundred and two consecutive women were admitted for laparoscopic sterilisation after assessment in the gynaecology clinic. On the day of planned surgery, all women had a pregnancy test performed on a urine sample taken that morning following overnight fasting, immediately prior to operation. Main outcome measures A positive pregnancy test on the day of planned surgery. Results Of 802 women tested, 21 (2.6%) were pregnant. A careful medical history taken before surgery revealed evidence of amenorrhoea and menstrual irregularity in 17 of the pregnant women. Of the 21 pregnant women, 11 underwent termination of pregnancy, six continued the pregnancy, four had a miscarriage and one had an ectopic pregnancy. Conclusion The routine practice of pregnancy testing on the day of laparoscopic sterilisation introduced in our hospital should continue to be part of a thorough clinical assessment before surgery. This may help to reduce the considerable level of existing litigation in a high risk area of gynaecological practice. [source] Volatile composition and proteolysis in traditionally produced mature Kashar cheeseINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, Issue 7 2009Ali Adnan Hayaloglu Summary Twelve samples of raw milk mature Kashar cheese at different stages of ripening were collected from retail outlets. The average pH, moisture, fat-in-dry matter, protein, salt-in-dry matter and titratable acidity contents of the samples were 5.33, 39.39%, 45.20%, 27.33%, 6.62% and 0.65% (as lactic acid), respectively. Indices of proteolysis varied from 10.72% to 23.75% and 7.09% to 12.26% for pH 4.6-soluble and 12% trichloroacetic acid-soluble nitrogen fractions, respectively, and total free amino acid concentrations ranged from 6.36 to 36.03 mg Leu g,1 of cheese. The cheeses were analysed for volatile compounds by Solid Phase Microextraction and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 113 compounds were detected and identified belonging to the following chemical groups: acids (eleven), esters (sixteen), ketones (sixteen), aldehydes (six), alcohols (twenty-seven), sulphur compounds (seven), terpenes (seven) and miscellaneous compounds (twenty-three). The potential effect of each compound on the flavour profile of Kashar cheese is discussed. Acids, esters, ketones and alcohols were found at considerable levels in the samples. Kashar cheeses obtained from different retail outlets displayed some differences in terms of chemical composition, proteolysis and patterns of aroma compounds; and may be attributed to their production technologies and age-related variations. [source] TT virus (TTV) loads associated with different peripheral blood cell types and evidence for TTV replication in activated mononuclear cellsJOURNAL OF MEDICAL VIROLOGY, Issue 2 2001Fabrizio Maggi Abstract TT virus (TTV) loads associated with the peripheral blood cells of seven patients known to carry the virus in plasma were investigated by real-time PCR. Whereas red cells/platelets were uniformly negative, six and four patients yielded positive peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and polymorphonuclear leukocytes, respectively, but viral titres were generally low. Fractionation of PBMCs into monocyte- and B, T4, and T8 lymphocyte-enriched subpopulations showed no pattern in the viral loads that might suggest the preferential association of TTV to one or more specific cell types. TTV-negative PBMCs absorbed measurable amounts of virus when incubated with infected plasma at 4°C. Furthermore, cultures of TTV-negative phytohaemagglutinin-stimulated PBMCs exposed in vitro to virus-positive plasma and faecal extracts released considerable levels of infectious TTV into the supernatant fluid and the same was true for TTV-positive stimulated PBMCs. These results indicate that, whereas freshly harvested resting PBMCs seem to produce little, if any TTV, stimulated PBMCs actively replicate the virus. J. Med. [source] Ser-59 is the major phosphorylation site in ,B-crystallin accumulated in the brains of patients with Alexander's diseaseJOURNAL OF NEUROCHEMISTRY, Issue 3 2001Kanefusa Kato The phosphorylation state of ,B-crystallin accumulated in the brains of two patients with Alexander's disease (one infantile and one juvenile type) was determined by means of SDS-PAGE or isoelectric focusing of soluble and insoluble fractions of brain extracts and subsequent western blot analysis with specific antibodies against ,B-crystallin and each of three phosphorylated serine residues. The level of mammalian small heat shock protein of 25,28 kDa (Hsp27) in the same fraction was also estimated by western blot analysis. The majority of ,B-crystallin was detected in the insoluble fraction of brain homogenates and phosphorylation was preferentially observed at Ser-59 in both cases. A significant level of phosphorylation at Ser-45 but not Ser-19 was also detected. Hsp27 was found at considerable levels in the insoluble fractions. ,B-crystallin and phosphorylated forms were detected in the cerebrospinal fluid of patient with the juvenile type. ,B-crystallin and phosphorylated forms were also detectable at considerable levels in the insoluble fraction of brain homogenates from patients with Alzheimer's disease and aged controls. The phosphorylation site was mostly at Ser-59 in all cases. Immunohistochemically, ,B-crystallin was stained in Rosenthal fibers in brains of patients with Alexander's disease and their peripheral portions were immunostained with antibodies recognizing phosphorylated Ser-59. These results indicate that the major phosphorylation site in ,B-crystallin in brains of patients with Alexander's disease or Alzheimer's disease as well as in aged controls is Ser-59. [source] Oestrogen Regulates the Expression and Function of Dopamine Transporters in Astrocytes of the Nigrostriatal SystemJOURNAL OF NEUROENDOCRINOLOGY, Issue 9 2007S. Karakaya Dopamine is actively and specifically eliminated from the extracellular space by astrocytes and neurones through dopamine transporters (DAT) and, afterwards, either recycled into vesicles or metabolised. The availability of dopamine reflects a critical point in the regulation of dopamine activity within the nigrostriatal circuit under normal and pathological conditions. From previous studies, we know that oestrogen regulates the efficacy of dopaminergic neurones at the synaptic level and improves dopamine function during Parkinson's disease. Accordingly, we investigated the contribution of local astroglial for extracellular dopamine elimination and the impact of oestrogen on DAT expression and activity. Using neonatal striatal and midbrain astrocyte cultures, we could demonstrate that astrocytes possess a specific dopamine uptake machinery and express DAT at considerable levels. The application of 17,-oestradiol decreased the expression of DAT by 80% and 60% in midbrain and striatal astroglia cultures, respectively. The unspecific dopamine transporters (OCT3, VMAT2) were not detected in astroglia. Functionally, oestrogen exposure inhibited the clearance of dopamine from the extracellular space by 45% and 35% compared to controls in midbrain and striatal astroglia, respectively. The effect on DAT expression and activity was completely antagonised by the oestrogen receptor antagonist ICI 182 780. In conclusion, our data suggest that the positive reinforcement of dopamine transmission under physiological conditions and the alleviative impact of oestrogen under pathological conditions may be the result of a decline in DAT expression and therefore delayed dopamine uptake by astroglia. [source] Genetic Relationship of Pyrenophora graminea, P. teres f. maculata and P. teres f. teres Assessed by RAPD AnalysisJOURNAL OF PHYTOPATHOLOGY, Issue 2 2007J. Bakonyi Abstract Barley-pathogenic Pyrenophora isolates are P. graminea (PG), P. teres f. maculata (PTM) and P. teres f. teres (PTT), which cause foliar leaf stripe, spot blotch and net blotch lesions, respectively. However, the species are often indistinguishable by morphological and cultural characteristics. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis has been used to study the genetic relationship amongst 11 PG, 9 PTM and 23 PTT isolates from distant geographical locations. Using seven primers, 55 (52.38%) polymorphic DNA bands were detected out of 105 different fragments amplified in the three pathogens. Genotypic diversity was high as all but two PTT strains had distinct multilocus RAPD fingerprints. Unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic average (UPGMA) clustering separated the isolates into three main clusters, corresponding to the three pathogens studied. No clear geographical substructuring was found. Nei's gene diversity analysis detected only small differences (max. 6.6%) in band frequencies but considerable levels of differentiation were observed among the pathogen species/forms. However, the variability among the Pyrenophora species/forms (max. 42.0%) was less than within species/forms (max. 58%). Nei's unbiased genetic distance values were in agreement with UPGMA clustering and gene diversity analysis: the two forms of P. teres showed higher divergence from one another (D = 0.132) than the distance found between PG and PTM (D = 0.094). The results suggest that the present taxonomical classification of these morphological taxa may not correspond to their phylogenetic relationship and that there is a very close genetic relationship amongst barley-pathogenic Pyrenophora species, but genetic exchanges between them could be infrequent. [source] A new species of spitting cobra (Naja) from north-eastern Africa (Serpentes: Elapidae)JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY, Issue 4 2003Wolfgang Wüster Abstract A new species of spitting cobra Naja nubiae sp. nov. is described from north-eastern Africa. The distinctiveness of the new species is confirmed by multivariate analysis of pattern and scalation data. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences reveals the new species to be the sister taxon of N. pallida, but with considerable levels of sequence divergence relative to that species. The populations concerned had previously been assigned to N. pallida. The new species differs from N. pallida principally in having more than one dark band across the neck and under the throat, as well as a pair of spots under the throat. It occupies a disjunct range across Egypt, the Sudan, Chad, Niger and Eritrea, where it seems to occupy primarily relatively mesic habitats. Naja mossambica is more closely related to N. nigricollis than to N. pallida and the new species. A key to the African species of Naja is presented. [source] |
