Rainfall variability and hydrological and erosive response of an olive tree microcatchment under no-tillage with a spontaneous grass cover in Spain

Abstract Most studies on runoff and soil loss from olive orchards were performed on plots, despite the fact that measurements that examine a range of erosive processes on different scales are essential to evaluate the suitability of the use and soil management of this type of land. The main environmental limitations of much of the land used for olive orchards in the Mediterranean are the steep slopes and the shallow soil depth , and this was the case in the study area. Soil erosion and runoff over two hydrological years (2005,2006 and 2006,2007) were monitored in an olive orchard microcatchment of 6·1,ha under no-tillage with spontaneous grass in order to evaluate its hydrological and erosive behaviour. Moreover, soil parameters such as organic matter (%OM), bulk density (BD) and hydraulic saturated conductivity (Ks) were also examined in the microcatchment to describe management effects on hydrological balance and on erosive processes. In the study period, the results showed runoff coefficients of 6·0% in the first year and 0·9% in the second. The differences respond to the impact of two or three yearly maximum events which were decisive in the annual balances. On the event scale, although maximum rainfall intensity values had a big influence on peak flows and runoff, its importance on mean sediment concentrations and sediment discharges was difficult to interpret due to the likely control of grass cover on volume runoff and on soil protection. In the case of annual soil erosion, they were measured as 1·0,Mg,ha,1,yr,1 and 0·3,Mg,ha,1,yr,1. Both are lower than the tolerance values evaluated in Andalusia (Spain). These results support the implementation of no-tillage with spontaneous grass cover for sloping land, although the reduced infiltration conditions determined by Ks in the first horizon suggest grass should be allowed to grow not only in spring but also in autumn. In addition, specific measurements to control gullies, which have formed in the terraced area in the catchment, should be included since it is expected that they could be the main sources of sediments. Parallelization of a vorticity formulation for the analysis of incompressible viscous fluid flows

Abstract A parallel computer implementation of a vorticity formulation for the analysis of incompressible viscous fluid flow problems is presented. The vorticity formulation involves a three-step process, two kinematic steps followed by a kinetic step. The first kinematic step determines vortex sheet strengths along the boundary of the domain from a Galerkin implementation of the generalized Helmholtz decomposition. The vortex sheet strengths are related to the vorticity flux boundary conditions. The second kinematic step determines the interior velocity field from the regular form of the generalized Helmholtz decomposition. The third kinetic step solves the vorticity equation using a Galerkin finite element method with boundary conditions determined in the first step and velocities determined in the second step. The accuracy of the numerical algorithm is demonstrated through the driven-cavity problem and the 2-D cylinder in a free-stream problem, which represent both internal and external flows. Each of the three steps requires a unique parallelization effort, which are evaluated in terms of parallel efficiency. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


Paired comparison of apheresis platelet function after storage in two containers

Abstract Platelet quality after storage strongly depends on the pre-storage quality as well as on the storage conditions determined by the storage container. In this paired study, we evaluated two different containers (MedSep CLXÔ and Delmed DPL-110). The Fresenius AS104 cell separator was used to prepare 17 platelet concentrates that were split and distributed into the containers to be compared. Cell counts, blood gas analysis, morphological scores, glucose and lactate levels, platelet activation, and platelet aggregation were measured before splitting at the day of preparation and after storage at day 3 and day 5. At day 3, there was no significant difference between the two bags apart from increased lactate and decreased pCO2 concentrations in the CLXÔ bags. At day 5 there were significantly higher lactate concentrations, pO2 levels, and aggregation after stimulation in the CLXÔ group, while the glucose and pCO2 concentrations were significantly lower in these platelet concentrates as compared to the DPL-110 group. However, these parameters did not influence the functional parameters tested. While the platelet quality decreased during storage in all bags, the functional changes were nearly identical in both bags tested. Mineral evolution of a garnet-pyroxenite nodule within eclogite, eastern Sulu ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic terrane, East China

Abstract Detailed microtextural observations and bulk chemical analysis were undertaken on a garnet-pyroxenite nodule within retrograde eclogites from the NE Sulu ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic (UHPM) terrane. The results suggest that the protolith was a cumulate from a gabbroic body. The nodule consists primarily of coarse clinopyroxene grains with a very high content of the Ca-Tschermakite molecule. Microscopic observations and back-scattered electron images (BSE) demonstrate a complicated intergrowth of clinopyroxene, garnet and ilmenite, which represents the peak metamorphic assemblage. The primary clinopyroxene grains are armoured with a thin garnet corona up to 0.5 mm wide that forms an interconnected network. Within the clinopyroxene grains, four sets of garnet lamellae are distributed along crystallographic planes; locally, a vermicular intergrowth of garnet and diopside is developed. Besides the garnet, parallel arrays of ilmenite blebs are common within the clinopyroxene. Hydrous minerals such as amphibole, zoisite and titanite formed at later stages, and replaced diopside, garnet and ilmenite respectively. The P,T conditions determined for the formation of the garnet lamellae indicate that the garnet pyroxenite experienced UHP metamorphism at the same peak P,T condition as its host eclogite. The very high Ca-Tschermakite content (31,34 mol.%) of the primary clinopyroxene indicates crystallization at about 9,17 kbar and 1250,1450 °C, and together with the microtextural observations, suggests that the protolith of the garnet pyroxenite was a cumulate from a former gabbroic body, in which case, the host eclogite might represent the gabbroic body.
