Toward a Dynamic Learning Perspective of Entrepreneurship

This conceptual article introduces a dynamic learning perspective of entrepreneurship that builds upon existing "dominant" theoretical approaches to understanding entrepreneurial activity. As many aspects of entrepreneurial learning remain poorly understood, this article maps out and extends current boundaries of thinking regarding how entrepreneurs learn. It presents key conclusions from emergent empirical and conceptual work on the subject and synthesizes a broad range of contributory adult, management, and individual learning literature to develop a robust and integrated thematic conceptualization of entrepreneurial learning. Three distinctive, interrelated elements of entrepreneurial learning are proposed,dynamic temporal phases, interrelated processes, and overarching characteristics. The article concludes by demonstrating how a "learning lens" can be applied to create further avenues for research in entrepreneurship from a learning perspective. [source]


Dissociation: An insufficiently recognized major feature of complex posttraumatic stress disorder

The role of dissociation in (complex) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been insufficiently recognized for at least two reasons: the view that dissociation is a peripheral, not a central feature of PTSD, and existing confusion regarding the nature of dissociation. In this conceptual article, the authors address both issues by postulating that traumatization essentially involves some degree of division or dissociation of psychobiological systems that constitute personality. One or more dissociative parts of the personality avoid traumatic memories and perform functions in daily life, while one or more other parts remain fixated in traumatic experiences and defensive actions. Dissociative parts manifest in negative and positive dissociative symptoms that should be distinguished from alterations of consciousness. Complex PTSD involves a more complex structural dissociation than simple PTSD. [source]


Competence transfer from old timers to newcomers analysed with the help of the holistic concept of man

This conceptual article addresses the question of how the competencies of old timers are transferred to newcomers in the context of a technology company. First, an individual's personal competence which is divided into knowledge based competencies and socially based competencies is illustrated. A special focus is on how the competence alters in the course of the individual's working life. Second, our conceptual tool the ,Holistic Concept of Man', which defines the human individual to consist of three deeply intertwined modes of existence (i.e. consciousness, situationality and corporeality), is described. Third, because in the literature the communicability and motivation are often identified as factors that facilitate or hinder competence transfer, these factors are analysed by the tool mentioned. However, because the competence is, in fact, transferred from the worldview of an old timer to the worldview of a newcomer, this concept is described before the analysis. Also the notion of communicability is divided further and handled in three different sub-sections dealing with: straight interaction between an old timer and a newcomer, action learning, and workplace learning. The paper ends with the conclusion that when studying and analysing competence transfer in practice, three individual dimensions (i.e. consciousness, situationality and corporeality) should be understood and taken into consideration. It is also concluded that old timers' and newcomers' different worldviews and different situationalities are the central reasons for difficulties in the competence transferring process between these parties. BETTER REGULATION IN EUROPE: BETWEEN PUBLIC MANAGEMENT AND REGULATORY REFORM

Can the European regulatory state be managed? The European Union (EU) and its member states have looked at better regulation as a possible answer to this difficult question. This emerging public policy presents challenges to scholars of public management and administrative reforms, but also opportunities. In this conceptual article, we start from the problems created by the value-laden discourse used by policy-makers in this area, and provide a definition and a framework that are suitable for empirical/explanatory research. We then show how public administration scholars could usefully bring better regulation into their research agendas. To be more specific, we situate better regulation in the context of the academic debates on the New Public Management, the political control of bureaucracies, evidence-based policy, and the regulatory state in Europe.
