Selected AbstractsAssessment of executive function in preschool-aged childrenDEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES RESEARCH REVIEW, Issue 3 2005Peter K. Isquith Abstract Assessment of the overarching self-regulatory mechanisms, or executive functions, in any age group is challenging, in part due to the complexity of this domain, in part due to their dynamic essence, and in part due to the inextricable links between these central processes and the associated domain-specific processes, such as language, motor function, and attention, over which they preside. While much progress has been made in clinical assessment approaches for measuring executive functions in adults and to some extent in adolescents and school-aged children, the toolkit for the preschool evaluator remains sparse. The past decade, however, has seen a substantial increase in attention to executive functions in very young children from a developmental neuropsychological perspective. With this has come a necessity for better, more specific, and more internally valid performance measures, many of which are now described in the experimental literature. Few such tasks, however, have adequately demonstrated psychometric properties for clinical application. We present two performance tasks designed to tap selective aspects of executive function in preschoolers that are emerging from the experimental laboratory and hold promise of appropriate reliability and validity for the clinical laboratory. Performance tests alone, however, are insufficient to develop a comprehensive picture of a child's executive functioning. Thus, we present a rating scale of preschoolers' executive function in the everyday context, and advocate a model of executive function assessment that incorporates both controlled performance tasks that target specific aspects of executive function and parent/teacher ratings that target more global aspects of self-regulation in the everyday context. © 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Melinder Objective:, To describe how specific theories and methods used in public health, especially regarding injuries, are related to violence. Method:, Theories and preventive work in injury research (above accidents) are presented and related to violence. Results: Registration of injuries and an interest in the environment are seen as specific for injuries. In prevention there is a focus on community work and the concept of ,a safe community' has been developed. Haddon's matrix offers a foundation for theoretical injury research. It is formed by cross-tabulating the trichotomy of host-agent-environment against a time dimension. Conclusion:, One practical and one theoretical model on how violence might be seen as an injury have been demonstrated. No clear evaluation has been made of the practical model up to now. The theoretical model has the advantage that the model makes it easier to get a more comprehensive picture of how different factors influence violence. [source] Gauging the societal impacts of natural disasters using a capability approachDISASTERS, Issue 3 2010Paolo Gardoni There is a widely acknowledged need for a single composite index that provides a comprehensive picture of the societal impact of disasters. A composite index combines and logically organizes important information policy-makers need to allocate resources for the recovery from natural disasters; it can also inform hazard mitigation strategies. This paper develops a Disaster Impact Index (DII) to gauge the societal impact of disasters on the basis of the changes in individuals' capabilities. The DII can be interpreted as the disaster impact per capita. Capabilities are dimensions of individual well-being and refer to the genuine opportunities individuals have to achieve valuable states and activities (such as being adequately nourished or being mobile). After discussing the steps required to construct the DII, this article computes and compares the DIIs for two earthquakes of similar magnitude in two societies at different levels of development and of two disasters (earthquake and wind storm) in the same society. [source] Systemic polarisation and spatial votingEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF POLITICAL RESEARCH, Issue 6 2010SERGI PARDOS-PRADO The controversy between proximity and directional models of issue voting has not been settled. Instead of appointing an ultimate winner, this article explores the conditioning impact of the level of systemic polarisation and provides evidence that proximity is a more relevant determinant of voter behaviour in less polarised systems, whereas there is a centrifugal and directional dynamic in more polarised contexts. By so doing, the article shows how a largely forgotten notion , namely Sartori's idea of the spatial elasticity of the political spectrum , leads to different spatial viewpoints. In distinguishing between party (supply side) and voter (demand side) polarisation, this framework provides a comprehensive picture about the conditions that turn a centripetal electoral dynamic into a purely centrifugal one. [source] Climate variability and change in the Greater Alpine Region over the last two centuries based on multi-variable analysisINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CLIMATOLOGY, Issue 15 2009Michele Brunetti Abstract An extensive analysis of the HISTALP database is presented with the aim of giving a comprehensive picture of secular climate variability and change in the Greater Alpine Region (GAR, 4,19 E, 43,49 N). The HISTALP database encompasses 242 sites and concerns temperature, pressure, precipitation, cloudiness, sunshine duration, vapour pressure and relative humidity. The analyses are based on four regional mean records representing different GAR low-level areas and on an additional mean record representing high-level locations. The first goal of the paper is to give an overview of the seasonal and annual records for the different variables, aiming to highlight both variability on decadal time scale and long-term evolution. Then it focuses on trend and correlation analysis. Trends are presented both for the period of common data availability for all regional average series and for moving windows that permit studying the trends over a wide range of timescales. Correlations among the different variables are presented both for the regional average series and for their high-pass-filtered versions. The analyses, beside highlighting a warming that is about twice as large as the global trend, also show that the different variables have responded in different ways to this warming and that the mutual interactions linking the different variables are often present only at specific temporal scales and only in parts of the GAR and in defined seasons. In spite of this complex behaviour, which may also be due to some residual inhomogeneities still affecting the data, the analyses give evidence that the HISTALP database has an excellent internal consistency and show that the availability of a multi-variable database turns out to be very useful in order to evaluate the reliability of the reconstruction of each variable and to better understand the behaviour and the mutual interactions of the different variables. Samar Hasnain Metalloproteins make up some 30% of proteins in known genomes. Metalloproteins are a special class of proteins that utilise the unique properties of metal atoms in conjunction with the macromolecular assembly to perform life-sustaining processes. A number of metalloproteins are known to be involved in many disease states including ageing processes. The incorporation of the metal ion is a very tightly regulated process that, in vivo, very often requires specific chaperons to deliver and help incorporate the metal atom in the macromolecule. The lack of or inappropriate incorporation of metals along with genetic factors can lead to the mis-function of these proteins leading to disease. The mis-functions due to genetic alterations that lead to diseases like ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or motor neuron disease) and Creutzfeld Jacob disease (CJD) are now well recognised. Synchrotron radiation sources provide a unique set of structural tools, which in combination can prove extremely powerful in providing a comprehensive picture of these complex biological systems. In particular for metalloproteins, the combined use of X-ray crystallography, X-ray solution scattering and X-ray spectroscopy (XAFS) is extremely useful. We are currently engaged in a structural study where our aim is to characterize structurally and functionally metalloproteins and then transfer this knowledge to afford the problem of the mis-function of metalloproteins that lead to these terminal illnesses, either due to a gain of function/property or a loss of function/property. In this context, the benefits of adopting the `philosophy' being developed for the structural genomics effort are highlighted. [source] An empirical analysis of engineers' information behaviorsJOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, Issue 4 2010Mark A. Robinson The importance of the acquisition and provision of information within knowledge work such as engineering is widely acknowledged. This article reports an extensive empirical study of such information behaviors in engineers, using a novel and effective work sampling method. Seventy-eight design engineers each carried a portable handheld computer (PDA) for 20 working days. Once every hour, they were prompted to enter data concerning the task they were currently performing, including the information behaviors in which they were engaging. The resultant data represent a comprehensive picture of engineers' information behaviors and the percentage of their working time for which each of these behaviors accounts (55.75% in total). Specific hypotheses concerning the time spent engaged in these behaviors were also tested. Accordingly, it was found that participants spent substantially more time receiving information they had not requested than information they had, and this pattern was also reflected when they provided others with information. Furthermore, although there was no difference found between the time participants spent searching for information from other people compared with nonhuman sources, in the former case they spent relatively less time locating the information source and information within that source, and relatively more time engaged in problem solving and decision making. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for theory and organizational practice. [source] Uncovering the dark Web: A case study of Jihad on the WebJOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, Issue 8 2008Hsinchun Chen While the Web has become a worldwide platform for communication, terrorists share their ideology and communicate with members on the "Dark Web",the reverse side of the Web used by terrorists. Currently, the problems of information overload and difficulty to obtain a comprehensive picture of terrorist activities hinder effective and efficient analysis of terrorist information on the Web. To improve understanding of terrorist activities, we have developed a novel methodology for collecting and analyzing Dark Web information. The methodology incorporates information collection, analysis, and visualization techniques, and exploits various Web information sources. We applied it to collecting and analyzing information of 39 Jihad Web sites and developed visualization of their site contents, relationships, and activity levels. An expert evaluation showed that the methodology is very useful and promising, having a high potential to assist in investigation and understanding of terrorist activities by producing results that could potentially help guide both policymaking and intelligence research. [source] Using farmers' knowledge for defining criteria for land qualities in biophysical land evaluationLAND DEGRADATION AND DEVELOPMENT, Issue 6 2001I. Messing Abstract The objective of this paper is to present a way of complementing empirical results with farmers' perceptions in defining limiting biophysical land properties in a land suitability evaluation using the FAO framework methodology. The farmers' perceptions were identified using rapid and participatory rural appraisal (RRA/PRA) tools. The study catchment, having a semiarid continental climate and located on the Loess Plateau in northern China, covered an area of 3.5 km2. Most of the land users were dependent on subsistence agriculture. There were important topographic variations in the catchment and arable cropping on steep slopes brought about degradation of land due to water erosion. The biophysical monitoring, soil survey and RRA/PRA survey, carried out one year prior to the present investigation, supplied the data needed for identification of preliminary limiting land properties and land evaluation units. The land properties that needed further investigation in the present study were slope aspect, soil workability, flooding hazard and farmers' criteria on choice of land-use type. The farmers were able to give a comprehensive picture of the spatial and temporal variation and the importance for land-use options of the land properties concerned, and thereby complement the information gained from empirical results (measurements). In order to guarantee good production for dry as well as wet years, both south- and north-facing sites were chosen for most crops, and the slope aspect did not need to be differentiated in the final land suitability evaluation for arable crops. Grassland, however, was considered to be more suitable than woodland on south-facing sites. Hard soil layers were found to be important, since they affected soil workability and erosion negatively, giving slightly reduced suitability for the land units in which they occurred. Flooding events affecting crops on alluvial soils negatively were considered to occur once every 5 to 10 years, which is considered to be a low rate, so this property was therefore not included in the final suitability evaluation. Ethnography provides a comprehensive picture of process in an agency or other setting by examining the dynamics between individuals and institutions to understand how systems work. Ethnography is particularly good at evaluating complex problems involving multiple stakeholders as well as understanding agency processes. I use examples from the Neighborhood Settlement House Evaluation Project and Kenosha Social Capital Study to describe the ethnographic method and its potential uses for nonprofit managers. I begin with an outline of methodological techniques, including problem definition, sample design, various data collection techniques, and analysis. Next I discuss ethnography's approach to the common research concerns of generalizability and replication. In concluding, I discuss ways that this method can be useful to nonprofit managers. Quality work is compared with less complete research techniques throughout each section. Riley Archaeological studies on olive oil produced in Crete in the Bronze Age focus primarily on aspects such as the period when olive cultivation became widespread, the number of olive trees cultivated, or the quantity of oil stored in the Minoan palaces. Olive oil is however an organic substance, a perishable product, the nutritional and storage properties of which are determined by environmental, agronomic, processing and storage conditions. In this paper archaeological, environmental and biochemical evidence is combined to present a comprehensive picture of the potential quality, nutritional and storage properties of Minoan olive oil. The comparative evidence presented suggests that Minoan olive oil was equal in quality to the cold-pressed virgin olive oils produced today, and as such, the oil was nutritionally important in the Bronze Age and a valuable trade commodity. Gadomski Abstract Based on a number of experimental studies, we propose to consider how elastic interactions between a crystal and its surroundings change crystal growing conditions. To aim to do this, we analyze the influence of some nonequilibrium modification of the Gibbs,Thomson thermodynamic condition, prescribed at the crystal boundary, on some properties of a kinetic model of protein crystal growth in a mass-convection regime. Next, to draw the physical picture more realistically, we study the influence of a certain stochastic perturbation on the crystal growth rate. To fulfill the task we apply the description of crystal growth in terms of nonequilibrium thermodynamics at a mesoscopic level. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Cohort Reproductive Patterns in Low-Fertility CountriesPOPULATION AND DEVELOPMENT REVIEW, Issue 1 2001Tomas Frejka This account reports on a project in progress that aims to obtain a comprehensive picture of contemporary fertility levels and trends in 27 low-fertility countries. Cohort analysis is applied to review the fertility experience of women born from the 1930s through the 1970s. This choice of dates ensures that not only completed fertility but also the fertility patterns of women in the midst of or near the onset of their reproductive period are examined. In most of the 27 countries, completed fertility of successive cohorts has been declining. It appears plausible that the trends discerned in the analysis will continue in the foreseeable future. For these trends to be reversed, women who are about to enter or who are in the midst of their reproductive periods would have to adopt fertility patterns markedly different from those of women born in the 1960s and 1970s. We elucidate the incipience of this reduction of quantum fluctuations. In order to illustrate the resulting effects we determine the critical temperatures for ferro- and antiferromagnets and the ground state sublattice magnetization for antiferromagnets. The outcome depends on the dimension, the spin quantum number and the anisotropy field and is studied for a widespread range of these parameters. We compare the results obtained by: Classical Mean Field, Quantum Mean Field, Linear Spin Wave and Random Phase Approximation. Our findings are confirmed and quantitatively improved by numerical Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The differences between the ferromagnet and antiferromagnet are investigated. We finally find a comprehensive picture of the classical trends and elucidate the suppression of quantum fluctuations in anisotropic spin systems. In particular, we find that the quantum fluctuations are extraordinarily sensitive to the presence of small anisotropy fields. Many groups found in Australia show characteristic Gondwanan distribution patterns on the southern continents. There are extensive radiations on the plant families Myrtaceae and Mimosaceae, a specialised arid/semiarid fauna, and diverse taxa associated with rainforests and seasonally wet tropical regions. The fauna is also poorly studied, particularly when compared with the flora and vertebrate groups. However, studies in the last two decades have provided a more comprehensive picture of the size of the fauna, relationships, levels of endemism, origins and its evolution. Here we provide an overview of these and other aspects of Australian insect diversity, focusing on six groups, the Thysanoptera and the five megadiverse orders Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera. [source] Australian Child Support Reforms: A Case Study of the Use of Microsimulation Modelling in the Policy Development ProcessAUSTRALIAN JOURNAL OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, Issue 4 2007Ann Harding Child support is always a difficult area of public policy, balancing the sometimes competing needs of children, resident and non-resident parents and the state. This article provides a relatively rare insight into some of the processes involved in developing the new Australian Child Support Scheme (CSS), which will commence full operation in July 2008. In particular, this article shows how microsimulation modelling was used by the Ministerial Taskforce on Child Support and the government in the policy reform process. The availability of such sophisticated distributional analysis and modelling allowed the development of a comprehensive picture of how the reforms would affect CSS clients, thereby facilitating the adoption of major policy change. This article also provides a blueprint for policy-makers of how modelling can facilitate their policy development processes. [source] Evaluating Co-primary Endpoints Collectively in Clinical Trials,BIOMETRICAL JOURNAL, Issue 1 2009Qian H. Li Abstract Often a treatment is assessed by co-primary endpoints so that a comprehensive picture of the treatment effect can be obtained. Co-primary endpoints can be different medical assessments angled at different aspects of a disease, therefore, are used collectively to strengthen evidence for the treatment effect. It is common sense that if a treatment is ineffective, the chance to show that the treatment is effective in all co-primary endpoints should be small. Therefore, it may not be necessary to require all the co-primary endpoints to be statistically significant at the 1-sided 0.025 level to control the error rate of wrongly approving an ineffective treatment. Rather it is reasonable to allow certain variation for the p -values within a range close to 0.025. In this paper, statistical methods are developed to derive decision rules to evaluate co-primary endpoints collectively. The decision rules control the error rate of wrongly accepting an ineffective treatment at the level of 0.025 for a study and the error rate at a slightly higher level for a treatment that works for all the co-primary endpoints except perhaps one. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Unexpected Deformations Induced by Surface Interaction and Chiral Self-Assembly of CoII -Tetraphenylporphyrin (Co-TPP) Adsorbed on Cu(110): A Combined STM and Periodic DFT StudyCHEMISTRY - A EUROPEAN JOURNAL, Issue 38 2010Philip Donovan Abstract In a combined scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and periodic density functional theory (DFT) study, we present the first comprehensive picture of the energy costs and gains that drive the adsorption and chiral self-assembly of highly distorted CoII -tetraphenylporphyrin (Co-TPP) conformers on the Cu(110) surface. Periodic, semi-local DFT calculations reveal a strong energetic preference for Co-TPP molecules to adsorb at the short-bridge site when organised within a domain. At this adsorption site, a substantial chemical interaction between the molecular core and the surface causes the porphyrin macrocycle to accommodate close to the surface and in a flat geometry, which induces considerable tilting distortions in the phenyl groups. Experimental STM images can be explained in terms of these conformational changes and adsorption-induced electronic effects. For the ordered structure we unambiguously show that the substantial energy gain from the molecule,surface interaction recuperates the high cost of the induced molecular and surface deformations as compared with gas phase molecules. Conversely, singly adsorbed molecules prefer a long-bridge adsorption site and adopt a non-planar, saddle-shape conformation. By using a van der Waals density functional correction scheme, we found that the intermolecular ,,, interactions make the distorted conformer more stable than the saddle conformer within the organic assembly. These interactions drive supramolecular assembly and also generate chiral expression in the system, pinning individual molecules in a propeller-like conformation and directing their assembly along non-symmetric directions that lead to the coexistence of mirror-image chiral domains. Our observations reveal that a strong macrocycle,surface interaction can trigger and stabilise highly unexpected deformations of the molecular structure and thus substantially extend the range of chemistries possible within these systems.
