Selected AbstractsChanges in the Management of Doctoral EducationEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF EDUCATION, Issue 1 2010LUKAS BASCHUNG This article deals with the current reform of European doctoral education. It is argued that the concrete results of the reform can be better understood by analysing changes in the management of doctoral programmes. This rests on the case study of a Norwegian PhD programme in finance and is based on an analytical framework composed of three public management narratives: New Public Management (NPM), Network Governance (NG) and Neo-Weberian-State (NWS). The latter allows for a particular focus on the instruments, actors and objectives of governance. The article concludes that the examined doctoral programme's management story can be divided into two episodes. The first , the ,internationalisation' episode , is shaped by the academic profession in finance which uses a wide range of constraining NPM instruments and applies them in a comprehensive manner to doctoral education in order to achieve its overall objective, namely to implement an internationally competitive PhD programme. The second , the ,integration' episode , is about a recently developed policy instrument with relatively non-constraining NWS elements, used by the State to establish National Research Schools. The latter are principally aimed at the better development and coordination of doctoral training between small and large higher education institutions. Due to those differences between the two episodes in terms of constraining character and scope, the reform of the examined doctoral programme is strongly shaped by the first episode. Hence, the reform essentially consists in a doctoral programme with an international and academic character. [source] The screening of the second-site suppressor mutations of the common p53 mutantsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CANCER, Issue 3 2007Kazunori Otsuka Abstract Second-site suppressor (SSS) mutations in p53 found by random mutagenesis have shown to restore the inactivated function of some tumor-derived p53. To screen novel SSS mutations against common mutant p53s, intragenic second-site (SS) mutations were introduced into mutant p53 cDNA in a comprehensive manner by using a p53 missense mutation library. The resulting mutant p53s with background and SS mutations were assayed for their ability to restore the p53 transactivation function in both yeast and human cell systems. We identified 12 novel SSS mutations including H178Y against a common mutation G245S. Surprisingly, the G245S phenotype is rescued when coexpressed with p53 bearing the H178Y mutation. This result indicated that there is a possibility that intragenic suppressor mutations might restore the protein function in an intermolecular manner. The intermolecular mechanism may lead to novel strategies for restoring inactivated p53 function and tumor suppression in cancer treatment. © 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source] Non-linear circuit modelling via nodal methodsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CIRCUIT THEORY AND APPLICATIONS, Issue 4 2005Ricardo Riaza Abstract We discuss in this paper several interrelated nodal methods for setting up the equations of non-linear, lumped electrical circuits. A rather exhaustive framework is presented, aimed at surveying different approaches and terminologies in a comprehensive manner. This framework includes charge-oriented, conventional, and hybrid systems. Special attention is paid to so-called augmented node analysis (ANA) models, which somehow articulate the tableau and modified node analysis (MNA) approaches to non-linear circuit modelling. We use a differential,algebraic formalism and, extending previous results proved in the MNA context, we provide index-1 conditions for augmented systems, which are shown to be transferred to tableau models. This approach gives, in particular, precise conditions for the feasibility of certain state-space reductions. We work with very general assumptions on device characteristics; in particular, our approach comprises a wide range of resistive devices, going beyond voltage-controlled ones. Holtkötter Synopsis The process of skin aging is a combination of an extrinsic and intrinsic aspect, and knowing the molecular changes underlying both is a prerequisite to being able to effectively counter it. However, despite its importance for a deeper understanding of skin aging as a whole, the process of intrinsic skin aging in particular has barely been investigated. In this study, the molecular changes of intrinsic skin aging were analyzed by applying ,Serial Analysis of Gene Expression' (SAGETM) to skin biopsies of young and aged donors. The analysis resulted in several hundred differentially expressed genes with varying statistical significance. Of these, several genes were identified that either have never been described in skin aging before (e.g. APP) or have no identified function, e.g. EST sequences. This is the first time that intrinsic skin aging has been analyzed in such a comprehensive manner, offering a new and partially unexpected set of target genes that have to be analyzed in more detail in terms of their contribution to the skin aging process. Résumé Le mécanisme de vieillissement de la peau repose sur un ensemble de phénomènes intrinsèques et extrinsèques. La connaissance des modifications moléculaires s'y rattachant est un pré requis pour tenter de le combattre. Cependant, malgré son importance pour une meilleure connaissance du vieillissement cutané dans son ensemble, le mécanisme du vieillissement cutané intrinsèque, n'a été que peu étudié. Dans cette étude, les changements moléculaires du vieillissement cutané intrinsèque ont été analysés à l'aide de la technique SAGETM, Serial Analysis of Gene Expression , appliquée à des biopsies de peau de donneurs jeunes et âgés. L'analyse montre plusieurs centaines de gènes exprimés de façon statistiquement différente. Parmi ceux-ci, plusieurs gènes n'ayant jamais été décrits dans le vieillissement cutané (par exemple l'amyloid precursor protein), ou ne possédant pas de fonction connue, par exemple les séquences EST, ont été identifiés. Rieger Abstract Cytokines are important regulators of cell fates with high clinical and commercial relevance. However, despite decades of intense academic and industrial research, it proved surprisingly difficult to describe the biological functions of cytokines in a precise and comprehensive manner. The exact analysis of cytokine biology is complicated by the fact that individual cytokines control many different cell fates and activate a multitude of intracellular signaling pathways. Moreover, although activating different molecular programs, different cytokines can be redundant in their biological effects. In addition, cytokines with different biological effects can activate overlapping signaling pathways. This prospect article will outline the necessity of continuous single cell biochemistry to unravel the biological functions of molecular cytokine signaling. It focuses on potentials and limitations of recent technical developments in fluorescent time-lapse imaging and single cell tracking allowing constant long-term observation of molecules and behavior of single cells. [source] Identification of genes related to mechanical stress in human periodontal ligament cells using microarray analysisJOURNAL OF PERIODONTAL RESEARCH, Issue 1 2007R. M. S. De Araujo Background and Objective:, Differential expression of genes in human periodontal ligament (PDL) under mechanical stress, such as orthodontic force, is thought to be involved in the remodeling of PDL cells and periodontal tissues. However, little is known about the genes expressed in PDL cells under mechanical stress. Material and Methods:, We employed microarray analysis to assess, in a comprehensive manner, the gene expression profiles in PDL cells compressed by a static force using an in vitro three-dimensional culture system. Six genes were selected and validated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis, consistent with the microarray data. Results:, The microarray data revealed that 108 of 30,000 genes tested were differentially expressed by mechanical force loading. Among them, 85 genes were up-regulated by mechanical stress, while 23 genes were down-regulated, judging by the thresholds of a two-fold increase/decrease compared with the controls. Thirty-two of the up-regulated and eight of the down-regulated genes, well-characterized in protein function, were involved in numerous biological processes including cell communication, cell signaling, cell cycle, stress response, and calcium release. However, several genes differentially expressed in our microarray data have not been well defined as stress-response molecules. Conclusion:, Our microarray is the first to show the gene profile in PDL cells caused by mechanical stress; however, further studies to clarify the physiological function of these molecules in PDL cells are required. [source] Analyses of Digman's Child-Personality Data: Derivation of Big-Five Factor Scores From Each of Six SamplesJOURNAL OF PERSONALITY, Issue 5 2001Lewis R. Goldberg One of the world's richest collections of teacher descriptions of elementary-school children was obtained by John M. Digman from 1959 to 1967 in schools on two Hawaiian islands. In six phases of data collection, 88 teachers described 2,572 of their students, using one of five different sets of personality variables. The present report provides findings from new analyses of these important data, which have never before been analyzed in a comprehensive manner. When factors developed from carefully selected markers of the Big-Five factor structure were compared to those based on the total set of variables in each sample, the congruence between both types of factors was quite high. Attempts to extend the structure to 6 and 7 factors revealed no other broad factors beyond the Big Five in any of the 6 samples. These robust findings provide significant new evidence for the structure of teacher-based assessments of child personality attributes. [source] Why Are You Learning a Second Language?LANGUAGE LEARNING, Issue S1 2003Motivational Orientations, Self-Determination Theory The data for this study were collected in my first year of graduate school for a term paper for a course I was taking from Luc Pelletier. When I began graduate school, Luc also started at the University of Ottawa as a new faculty member, and he taught a course in motivation. I had worked with Richard Clément for a couple of years already as an honors student and as a research assistant and had conducted research on orientations and motivation under his supervision as part of my honors thesis project. Luc was very interested in self-determination theory (SDT) and had worked with Bob Vallerand on an instrument to assess academic motivation from this perspective. Luc and I decided to carry out a study on language learning orientations using SDT and enlisted Richard's and Bob's involvement in the project. As a bilingual institution where all students were required to demonstrate competence in their second language (L2), whether French or English, the University of Ottawa was an ideal setting for this type of research. The project was a first examination of SDT in the language learning context, and to the best of my knowledge it was the only, or at least one of the very few, empirical investigations of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the area. It involved the development of a valid and reliable instrument to assess the different subtypes of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. It also explored the link between these motivational subtypes and various orientations to language learning that had been identified by Clément and Kruidenier (1983), including the travel, friendship, knowledge, and instrumental orientations. The results showed that the instrumental orientation and the SDT external regulation orientation were strongly correlated, and that the travel, friendship, and knowledge orientations were quite highly intercorrelated with identified regulation and intrinsic motivation. Moreover, the instrumental and external regulation orientation scales correlated in similar ways with the hypothesized antecedents of perceived autonomy and competence and the hypothesized consequences of intention to pursue L2 study and anxiety. In addition, the travel, friendship, and knowledge orientations were correlated with the hypothesized antecedents and consequences in a manner similar to intrinsic motivation and identified regulation. These results suggested that Clément and Kruidenier's 4 orientations may be tapping a similar construct as the SDT orientations. My only regret with this study is that I did not include a scale to measure the integrative orientation (Gardner, 1985) to determine its relation with the SDT subtypes. This issue would have to wait until a later study to be addressed. The results of this initial investigation encouraged me to pursue research integrating SDT with other theoretical frameworks of language learning motivation. I believe that the SDT framework has several advantages over some other formulations of learner orientations. SDT offers a parsimonious, internally consistent framework for systematically describing many different orientations in a comprehensive manner. It also offers considerable explanatory power for understanding why certain orientations are better predictors of relevant language learning variables (e.g., effort, persistence, attitudes) than others. Also, by invoking the psychological mechanisms of perceived autonomy, competence, and relatedness, it can account for why certain orientations are evident in some learners and not in others. Moreover, the framework is empirically testable and indeed has stood up well under empirical scrutiny in our studies. Its clear predictions may also be particularly valuable in applying the theory in language teaching and program development. Nagy Eltony The purpose behind building the industrial energy demand model was to enable assessment of the impact of potential policy options and to forecast future energy demand under various assumptions, including the impact of the possible removal of energy subsidies in accordance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement. The results of the model, based on three scenarios, underline several important issues: With nominal energy prices staying the same (the status quo) and with inflation and economic growth continuing to expand (i.e. baseline scenario), it is expected that industrial demand will grow. In this sector, energy consumption is projected to grow at an annual growth rate of about 3.5 per cent throughout the forecast period. In the moderate scenario, however, this drops to 1.9 per cent and when all energy subsidies are removed as in the case of the extreme scenario, the energy consumption is projected to grow by only 1.5 per cent annually throughout the same period. Moreover, with regards to inter-fuel substitution, the model forecast indicates that electricity and natural gas consumption will decline, while the consumption of oil products will increase in all scenarios. The results of the model also indicate that the changing price structure of energy resources should be done in a comprehensive manner. In other words, electricity prices should be adjusted upwards instantly with the adjustment of oil products' prices and natural gas otherwise, a massive inter-fuel substitution will occur within the various consuming industries. In particular, various types of molecular networks (e.g., protein,protein interaction (PPI) network; gene regulatory network (GRN); metabolic network (MN); gene coexpression network (GCEN)) have been extensively investigated, and those studies demonstrate great potentials to discover basic functions and to reveal essential mechanisms for various biological phenomena, by understanding biological systems not at individual component level but at a system-wide level. Recent studies on networks have created very prolific researches on many aspects of living organisms. In this paper, we aim to review the recent developments on topics related to molecular networks in a comprehensive manner, with the special emphasis on the computational aspect. The contents of the survey cover global topological properties and local structural characteristics, network motifs, network comparison and query, detection of functional modules and network motifs, function prediction from network analysis, inferring molecular networks from biological data as well as representative databases and software tools. [source] MICROFINANCE REVOLUTION: ITS EFFECTS, INNOVATIONS, AND CHALLENGESTHE DEVELOPING ECONOMIES, Issue 1 2010Hisaki KONO F35; O19 "Microfinance revolution" is the term often applied to the successful expansion of small-scale financial services to the poor with high repayment records in developing countries. The present paper investigates the extent to which the microfinance revolution is truly revolutionary. More specifically, it explores the impact of microfinance institutions on the poor, the mechanisms underlying high repayment rates and their innovations, and the new challenges microfinance institutions are currently facing. Different from the existing published survey literature, we focus on current topics and attempt to show recent theoretical developments in a comprehensive manner using simplified models with very similar settings. We contend that microfinance is developing in a promising direction but has yet to reach its full potential. [source] |
