Selected AbstractsThe biology of lantibiotics from the lacticin 481 group is coming of ageFEMS MICROBIOLOGY REVIEWS, Issue 2 2007Alain Dufour Abstract Lantibiotics are antimicrobial peptides from the bacteriocin family, secreted by Gram-positive bacteria. These peptides differ from other bacteriocins by the presence of (methyl)lanthionine residues, which result from enzymatic modification of precursor peptides encoded by structural genes. Several groups of lantibiotics have been distinguished, the largest of which is the lacticin 481 group. This group consists of at least 16 members, including lacticin 481, streptococcin A-FF22, mutacin II, nukacin ISK-1, and salivaricins. We present the first review devoted to this lantibiotic group, knowledge of which has increased significantly within the last few years. After updating the group composition and defining the common properties of these lantibiotics, we highlight the most recent developments. The latter concern: transcriptional regulation of the lantibiotic genes; understanding the biosynthetic machinery, in particular the ability to perform in vitro prepeptide maturation; characterization of a novel type of immunity protein; and broad application possibilities. This group differs in many aspects from the best known lantibiotic group (nisin group), but shares properties with less-studied groups such as the mersacidin, cytolysin and lactocin S groups. DaviesArticle first published online: 28 JUN 200 Abstract Septic encephalopathy is associated with breakdown of the blood,brain barrier and cerebral oedema. These features are also common properties of brain tumours. Perimicrovessel oedema, disruption of associated astrocyte end feet and neuronal injury occur in a porcine model of acute septic encephalopathy. The adrenergic system has been implicated in the inflammatory response to sepsis and may play a role in controlling blood,brain barrier permeability, since the ,2 -adrenoceptor agonist dopexamine inhibits perimicrovessel oedema formation whereas the ,1 -adrenoceptor agonist methoxamine provokes it. Electron microscopy revealed tight junction opening in high-grade astrocytoma microvessels. Expression of the tight junction protein occludin is reduced in these microvessels and this reduction is inversely correlated with the degree of cerebral oedema. Normal astrocytes secrete factors that induce barrier properties in endothelial cells, whereas high-grade astrocytomas secrete vascular endothelial growth factor, which stimulates angiogenesis, down regulates occludin and increases endothelial cell permeability. The water channel protein aquaporin-4 is normally expressed in astrocyte foot processes around cerebral microvessels. Its expression is massively up-regulated in high-grade astrocytoma and around metastatic adenocarcinoma. There is a significant correlation between aquaporin-4 expression and the degree of cerebral oedema, but it is not clear whether increased aquaporin-4 expression enhances oedema formation or clearance. These results suggest that the pathophysiology of brain oedema is multifactorial, but that there may be common processes operating regardless of the aetiology. [source] Numerical Simulation of the Application of NiTi Alloys in Medical TechnologiesPROCEEDINGS IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS & MECHANICS, Issue 1 2005Daniel Christ Shape memory alloys are nowadays already established as a material which is able to solve exceptional tasks in practical applications. Particularly, its utilization in the field of medical technologies increases steadily. For example micro tools (staple, catheters) and implants (coronary stents) are made out of Nickel-Titanium well known as a basic shape memory alloy. Apart from the advantages like the avoidance of auxiliary components and joints in the system and to utilize the high volume specific work of shape memory alloys, NiTi alloys exhibit a good biocompatibility. This property is necessary with regard to either permanent or temporary implants. To optimize the use of NiTi alloys in the scope of medical technologies, the support of the development of applicable tools by numerical simulations is highly recommended. However the complex material behaviour containing a profoundly thermomechanical coupling poses indeed a big challenge to the material modeling and its implementation into a finite element code. Particularly, the material model proposed by Helm [1] proves to be a firm model containing the most common properties of shape memory alloys, as the pseudoelasticity, the shape memory effect and the two-way effect. In the present contribution the FE modelling of a medical staple used in foot surgery is presented by considering the model of Helm which was investigated by the authors to improve its performance in the finite element method [2]. The foot staple, produced by a group of members of the SFB 459 which is funded by the DFG, avails the shape memory effect to excite the desired clamping effect [3]. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Cooperative hydrogen bonding in amyloid formationPROTEIN SCIENCE, Issue 4 2007Kiril Tsemekhman Abstract Amyloid diseases, including Alzheimer's and prion diseases, are each associated with unbranched protein fibrils. Each fibril is made of a particular protein, yet they share common properties. One such property is nucleation-dependent fibril growth. Monomers of amyloid-forming proteins can remain in dissolved form for long periods, before rapidly assembly into fibrils. The lag before growth has been attributed to slow kinetics of formation of a nucleus, on which other molecules can deposit to form the fibril. We have explored the energetics of fibril formation, based on the known molecular structure of a fibril-forming peptide from the yeast prion, Sup35, using both classical and quantum (density functional theory) methods. We find that the energetics of fibril formation for the first three layers are cooperative using both methods. This cooperativity is consistent with the observation that formation of amyloid fibrils involves slow nucleation and faster growth. [source] Theoretical Study on Co3+ in Aqueous Solution in Terms of ABEEM/MM ModelCHINESE JOURNAL OF CHEMISTRY, Issue 6 2007Qing-Mei Guan Abstract A detailed theoretical investigation on Co3+ hydration in aqueous solution has been carried out by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the atom-bond electronegativity equalization method fused into molecular mechanics (ABEEM/MM). The effective Co3+ ion-water potential has been constructed by fitting to ab initio structures and binding energies for ionic clusters. And then the ion-water interaction potential was applied in combination with the ABEEM-7P water model to molecular dynamics simulations of single Co3+(aq.) solution, managing to reproduce many experimental structural and dynamical properties of the solution. Here, not only the common properties (radial distribution function, angular distribution function and solvation energy) obtained for Co3+ in ABEEM-7P water solution were in good agreement with those from the experimental methods and other molecular dynamics simulations but also very interesting properties of charge distributions, geometries of water molecules, hydrogen bond, diffusion coefficients, vibrational spectra are investigated by ABEEM/MM model. [source] THE EFFECT OF NETWORK STRUCTURE ON DYNAMIC TEAM FORMATION IN MULTI-AGENT SYSTEMSCOMPUTATIONAL INTELLIGENCE, Issue 2 2008Matthew E. Gaston Previous studies of team formation in multi-agent systems have typically assumed that the agent social network underlying the agent organization is either not explicitly described or the social network is assumed to take on some regular structure such as a fully connected network or a hierarchy. However, recent studies have shown that real-world networks have a rich and purposeful structure, with common properties being observed in many different types of networks. As multi-agent systems continue to grow in size and complexity, the network structure of such systems will become increasing important for designing efficient, effective agent communities. We present a simple agent-based computational model of team formation, and analyze the theoretical performance of team formation in two simple classes of networks (ring and star topologies). We then give empirical results for team formation in more complex networks under a variety of conditions. From these experiments, we conclude that a key factor in effective team formation is the underlying agent interaction topology that determines the direct interconnections among agents. Specifically, we identify the property of diversity support as a key factor in the effectiveness of network structures for team formation. Scale-free networks, which were developed as a way to model real-world networks, exhibit short average path lengths and hub-like structures. We show that these properties, in turn, result in higher diversity support; as a result, scale-free networks yield higher organizational efficiency than the other classes of networks we have studied. [source] Noncontractible Heterogeneity in Directed SearchECONOMETRICA, Issue 4 2010Michael Peters This paper provides a directed search model designed to explain the residual part of wage variation left over after the impact of education and other observable worker characteristics have been removed. Workers have private information about their characteristics at the time they apply for jobs. Firms value these characteristics differently and can observe them once workers apply. They hire the worker they most prefer. However, the characteristics are not contractible, so firms cannot condition their wages on them. This paper shows how to extend arguments from directed search to handle this, allowing for arbitrary distributions of worker and firm types. The model is used to provide a functional relationship that ties together the wage distribution and the wage,duration function. This relationship provides a testable implication of the model. This relationship suggests a common property of wage distributions that guarantees that workers who leave unemployment at the highest wages also have the shortest unemployment duration. This is in strict contrast to the usual (and somewhat implausible) directed search story in which high wages are always accompanied by higher probability of unemployment. [source] Sensitivity of bacterial coaggregation to chelating agentsFEMS IMMUNOLOGY & MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 4 2000Suwimol Taweechaisupapong Abstract Coaggregation between pairs of microorganisms was found to be inhibited by chelating agents, such as acetylacetone, citrate, EDTA and carboxymethylcellulose. Assays were conducted on eight pairs of periodontopathogens and one pair consisting of Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The inhibitory effects of the chelating agents were reversible except for Actinomyces naeslundii 12104, the adhesin of which was irreversibly inactivated. Even though the bacteria possessed different kinds of adhesins, their sensitivity to chelating agents appears to be a common property. Non-toxic chelating agents, such as carboxymethylcellulose and citrate, may prove to be useful anti-adhesins. [source] Lipopolysaccharides of anaerobic beer spoilage bacteria of the genus Pectinatus, lipopolysaccharides of a Gram-positive genusFEMS MICROBIOLOGY REVIEWS, Issue 5 2004Ilkka M. Helander Abstract Bacteria of the genus Pectinatus emerged during the seventies as contaminants and spoilage organisms in packaged beer. This genus comprises two species, Pectinatus cerevisiiphilus and Pectinatus frisingensis; both are strict anaerobes. On the basis of genomic properties the genus is placed among low GC Gram-positive bacteria (phylum Firmicutes, class Clostridia, order Clostridiales, family Acidaminococcaceae). Despite this assignment, Pectinatus bacteria possess an outer membrane and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) typical of Gram-negative bacteria. The present review compiles the structural and compositional studies performed on Pectinatus LPS. These lipopolysaccharides exhibit extensive heterogeneity, i.e. several macromolecularly and structurally distinct LPS molecules are produced by each strain. Whereas heterogeneity is a common property in lipopolysaccharides, Pectinatus LPS have been shown to contain exceptional carbohydrate structures, consisting of a fairly conserved core region that carries a large non-repetitive saccharide that probably replaces the O-specific chain. Such structures represent a novel architectural principle of the LPS molecule. [source] Interpretation of the enhancement of field-scale effective matrix diffusion coefficient in a single fracture using a semi-analytical power series solutionHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 6 2009Tai-Sheng Liou Abstract A power series solution for convergent radial transport in a single fracture (PCRTSF) is developed. Transport processes considered in PCRTSF include advection and hydrodynamic dispersion in the fracture, molecular diffusion in the matrix, diffusive mass exchange across the fracture-matrix interface, and mixing effects in the injection and the extraction boreholes. An analytical solution in terms of a power series in Laplace domain is developed first, which is then numerically inverted by de-Hoog et al.'s algorithm. Four dimensionless parameters determine the behaviour of a breakthrough curve (BTC) calculated by PCRTSF, which are, in the order of decreasing sensitivity, the matrix diffusion factor, two mixing factors, and the Peclet number. The first parameter is lumped from matrix porosity, effective matrix diffusion coefficient, fracture aperture, and retardation factors. Its value increases as the matrix diffusion effect becomes significant. A non-zero matrix diffusion factor results in a , 3/2 slope of the tail of a log,log BTC, a common property for tracer diffusion into an infinite matrix. Both mixing factors have equal effects on BTC characteristics. However, the Peclet number has virtually no effect on BTC tail. PCRTSF is applied to re-analyse two published test results that were obtained from convergent radial tracer tests in a discrete, horizontal fracture in Silurian dolomite. PCRTSF is able to fit the field BTCs better than the original channel model does if a large matrix diffusion coefficient is used. Noticeably, the ratio of field-scale to lab-scale matrix diffusion coefficients can be as large as 378. This enhancement of the field-scale matrix diffusion coefficient may be ascribed to the presence of a degraded zone at the fracture-matrix interface because of karstic effects, or to flow channeling as a result of aperture heterogeneity. [source] Review article: proteinase-activated receptors , novel signals for gastrointestinal pathophysiologyALIMENTARY PHARMACOLOGY & THERAPEUTICS, Issue 3 2000Vergnolle Proteinase-activated receptors (PARs) have the common property of being activated by the proteolytic cleavage of their extracellular N-terminal domain. The new NH2 -terminus acts as a ,tethered ligand' binding and activating the receptor itself. Four members of this family have been cloned, three of which are activated by thrombin (PAR-1, PAR-3 and PAR-4) while the fourth (PAR-2) is activated by trypsin or mast cell tryptase. In physiological or pathophysiological conditions, the gastrointestinal tract is exposed more than other tissues to proteinases (digestive enzymes, proteinases from pathogens or proteinases from inflammatory cells) that can activate PARs. Since PARs are highly expressed throughout the gastrointestinal tract, the study of the role of PARs in these tissues appears to be particularly important. It has already been shown that PAR-2 activation induces calcium mobilization and eicosanoid production in enterocytes as well as changes in ion transport in jejunal tissue segments. PAR-2 activation also causes calcium mobilization and stimulates amylase release from pancreatic acini. Moreover, both PAR-1 and PAR-2 activation can alter the gastrointestinal motility. In inflammatory or allergic conditions, the proteinases that constitute the major agonists for PARs (thrombin, trypsin and mast cell tryptase) are usually released. The activation of PARs by these proteinases might contribute to the gastrointestinal disorders associated with these pathologies. A complete understanding of the role of PARs in the gastrointestinal tract will require the development of selective receptor antagonists that are not yet available. Nonetheless, the use of PAR agonists has already highlighted new potential functions for proteinases in the gastrointestinal tract, thus the control of PAR activation might represent a promising therapeutic target. [source] Autonomous plasmid-like replication of a conjugative transposonMOLECULAR MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 2 2010Catherine A. Lee Summary Integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs), a.k.a. conjugative transposons, are mobile genetic elements involved in many biological processes, including pathogenesis, symbiosis and the spread of antibiotic resistance. Unlike conjugative plasmids that are extra-chromosomal and replicate autonomously, ICEs are integrated in the chromosome and replicate passively during chromosomal replication. It is generally thought that ICEs do not replicate autonomously. We found that when induced, Bacillus subtilis ICEBs1 undergoes autonomous plasmid-like replication. Replication was unidirectional, initiated from the ICEBs1 origin of transfer, oriT, and required the ICEBs1 -encoded relaxase NicK. Replication also required several host proteins needed for chromosomal replication, but did not require the replicative helicase DnaC or the helicase loader protein DnaB. Rather, replication of ICEBs1 required the helicase PcrA that is required for rolling circle replication of many plasmids. Transfer of ICEBs1 from the donor required PcrA, but did not require replication, indicating that PcrA, and not DNA replication, facilitates unwinding of ICEBs1 DNA for horizontal transfer. Although not needed for horizontal transfer, replication of ICEBs1 was needed for stability of the element. We propose that autonomous plasmid-like replication is a common property of ICEs and contributes to the stability and maintenance of these mobile genetic elements in bacterial populations. [source] Infrared [Fe ii] emission in the circumstellar nebulae of luminous blue variablesMONTHLY NOTICES OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY, Issue 2 2002Nathan Smith Abstract After a serendipitous discovery of bright [Fe ii],16435 emission in nebulae around , Carinae and P Cygni, infrared spectra of other luminous blue variables (LBV) and LBV candidates were obtained. Bright infrared [Fe ii] emission appears to be a common property among LBVs with prominent nebulae; this is an interesting discovery because strong [Fe ii],16435 is typically seen in shock-excited objects like supernova remnants and outflows from newly formed massive stars, as well as in active galactic nuclei (AGN), where the excitation mechanism is uncertain. This paper presents spectra in the H-band (1.5 to 1.75 ,m) for the central stars and nebulae of , Car, AG Car, P Cyg, Wra 751, HR Car, HD 168625, HD 160529, R 127 and S Doradus. Seven of nine targets show bright [Fe ii],16435 in their nebulae, while it is absent in all central stars except the LBV candidate Wra 751. The two objects (S Dor and HD 160529) without prominent [Fe ii],16435 are not yet known to have nebulae detected in optical images, and both lack bright thermal infrared emission from dust. The possible excitation mechanisms for this line and the implications of its discovery in LBV nebulae are discussed; there are good reasons to expect shock excitation in some objects, but other mechanisms cannot be ruled out. [source] Past and future sustainability of water policies in EuropeNATURAL RESOURCES FORUM, Issue 3 2003Bernard Barraqué The article contributes to a discussion on two global issues on water: water resources management, and water supply and sanitation. Focusing on Europe, it traces the legal roots of current systems in history: as a resource, water is considered as a common property, rather than a market good; while as a public service it is usually a commodity. Public water supply and sanitation technologies and engineering have developed under three main paradigms: quantitative and civil engineering; qualitative and chemical/sanitary engineering (both on the supply side); and the most recent one, environmental engineering and integrated management (on the demand side). The cost of public drinking water is due to rise sharply in view of the two-fold financial challenge of replacing an ageing infrastructure and keeping up with ever-rising environmental and sanitary quality standards. Who will pay? Government subsidies, or water users? The author suggests that apparent successes with privatisation may have relied heavily on hidden government subsidies and/or the healthy state of previously installed water infrastructure: past government subsidies are still felt for as long as the lifetime of the infrastructure. The article stresses the importance of public participation and decentralized local management of water and sanitation services. Informing and involving users in water management decisions is seen as an integral part of the ,ethics' side of the crucial three E's (economics, environment, ethics). The article strongly argues for municipal provision of water services, and hopes that lessons learnt and solutions found in the European experience may serve water services management efforts in other regions of the world. [source] Shifting Common Spaces of Plant Genetic Resources in the International Regulation of PropertyTHE JOURNAL OF WORLD INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, Issue 3 2008Carolina Roa-Rodríguez The appellative "common heritage of mankind" is often used as a description of the property domain that governed plant genetic resources (PGR) at an international level up until the end of the twentieth century. However, the concept is rarely elaborated on. In this article we explore the origins of common property in PGR and the shifting content and shape of the genetic commons over the past several decades. Using the theoretical framework of diverse common property regimes developed by Peter Drahos, we chart the way in which the emergence and interaction of various international regulatory regimes related to PGR reshape common property spaces, rights and obligations. We argue that these international agreements do not regulate a single property domain in isolation, but rather modify the content and boundaries of the complex set of property domains that apply to PGR: private, state, common and public. More than a theoretical conundrum, we show that any realistic appraisal of the implementation of the international regulatory regimes in relation to PGR must acknowledge the conflicting and complex dynamics of these interrelated property domains, as well as the way in which they are being put into place on the ground. [source] Re-encountering resistance: Plantation activism and smallholder production in Thailand and Sarawak, MalaysiaASIA PACIFIC VIEWPOINT, Issue 3 2004Keith BarneyArticle first published online: 6 DEC 200 Abstract:,The emergence of social and environmental movements against plantation forestry in Southeast Asia positions rural development against local displacement and environmental degradation. Multi-scaled NGO networks have been active in promoting the notion that rural people in Southeast Asia uniformly oppose plantation development. There are potential pitfalls in this heightened attention to resistance however, as it has often lapsed into essentialist notions of timeless indigenous agricultural practices, and unproblematic local allegiances to common property and conservation. An exclusive emphasis on resistance also offers little understanding of widespread smallholder participation in plantation production across the region. A useful method of approaching the complexity of local responses to plantation development is through the history of legal and informal resource tenure, within an analysis of rural political-economic restructuring. Drawing on research in Thailand and Sarawak, I suggest that a more nuanced appreciation of both the structural constraints and deployments of agency which characterise the enrolment of rural people into plantation commodity networks, opens up new spaces for analysis and political action, which supports a geographically embedded view of relations of power, rural livelihoods and environmental politics.
