Quality Parameters for Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) Semen are Affected by Semen Collection Procedure

Contents Artificial insemination (AI) is poorly developed in camelids owing to the difficulty in collecting high quality semen and the highly viscous nature of the semen. Semen collected by artificial vagina (AV) is often of low quality and must be improved before any further development of AI technology can occur. The present study investigated the effects of adding a cervix-like stricture to the AV, presence of females, collecting semen into Androhep®, skim-milk or Tris diluents, and catalase supplementation (0, 100, 200 or 600 units/ml) of Tris diluent on alpaca semen quality parameters. The addition of a cervix-like stricture increased mating length (p < 0.05), whilst the presence of females during semen collection did not improve semen quality parameters (p > 0.05). Collection of semen into Tris diluent improved sperm motility (58.0 ± 11.9%) compared with the control (34.0 ± 10.8%; p < 0.05), Androhep® (33.5 ± 10.7%) and skim-milk diluents (28.2 ± 10.4%). Semen viscosity was reduced by collection into Androhep® (4.6 ± 1.7 mm) and skim-milk diluents (3.6 ± 1.3 mm) compared with Tris diluent (5.7 ± 2.1 mm) and no collection medium (9.3 ± 3.5 mm; p < 0.05). Tris diluent supplemented with 100, 200 or 600 units/ml catalase increased semen viscosity (5.0 ± 3.2 and 4.9 ± 3.2 mm). Collection of alpaca semen by AV into Tris diluent increased semen quality facilitating further development of AI technology in alpacas. [source]


Autologous peripheral blood stem cell collections in children weighing less than 10 Kg with solid tumors: Experience of a single center

Abstract There have only been a few reports and limited performance of peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) collection in very small children weighing less than 10 kg. In this study, we intended to evaluate the safety and yield of PBSC collection, with the efficacy of PBSC transplantation (PBSCT) in the smallest children with solid tumors. From January 1998 to February 2004, 173 children underwent PBSC collection in Samsung Medical Center, Korea. Of these, 15 (8.7%) children weighed less than 10 kg and their clinical diagnoses were neuroblastoma (10 cases), rhabdoid tumor (2 cases), rhabdomyosarcoma (2 cases), and Wilms tumor (1 case). PBSCs were collected following chemotherapy plus G-CSF mobilization. The median age and weight at the time of apheresis were 15 months and 9 kg, respectively. The median number of PBSC collection procedures per case was 4 (range, 2,7). The median cell yield per apheresis product was 0.95 (range, 0.01,33.32) × 106/kg CD34+ cells and 1.96 (range, 0.12,23.39) × 108/kg mononuclear cells. No complications associated with citrate toxicity and other adverse effect were observed during the procedures. After high-dose chemotherapy, 14 patients were reinfused with PBSCs alone and all showed successful hematopoietic recovery. We concluded that PBSC collection would be a safe and practical procedure, even when done in the smallest children, provided that adequate intravascular fluid volume and circulating red cell mass were maintained. Also, the use of PBSCs to support high-dose chemotherapy was well tolerated and might enhance hematological recovery in the smallest children showing the excellent efficacy of PBSCT. J. Clin. Exploring social capital in rural settlements of an islander region in Greece

Abstract This paper reports on a large scale cross-sectional study examining subjective perceptions of community social life held by a randomly selected sample of residents (n,=,428) in all small rural settings (n,=,89) of the region of North Aegean Sea. The notion of social capital was used as a conceptual tool in order to explore different aspects of the relational life of contemporary rural communities. This study has two aims: First to provide an account of rural residents' perceptions of village life in terms of interpersonal support, mutual aid, trust, social cohesion and community competence, and second to examine the suitability of the social capital notion within the specific cultural context. A combination of data collection procedures and a range of sources were employed, such as key informants, rural residents and researchers' field observations. The findings indicate that small farming communities of high devotion with deep roots and strong sense of belonging face severe demographic imbalance and experience low civic power given the limited links with external agents. The mainstream notion of social capital as an unconditionally beneficial factor is thus questioned. Community perceptions of mental disorders: a Greek perspective

Abstract The present cross-sectional study examines the perceptions of residents of a rural community in Greece pertaining to the interpretation, explanation, treatment and prognosis of various psychological problems. In all, 100 community residents took part. A series of vignettes in combination with both qualitative and quantitative data collection procedures was employed. The findings indicate a variation in the endorsement of interpretations and causal attributions as a function of the type of symptomatology presented. The overt psychotic cases of schizophrenia were more likely to be understood within a genetic explanatory framework while the less overt symptoms of mental disorders were perceived as being indicative of emotional problems triggered by personality and social environmental factors. The Effect of Repeated Physical Disturbance on Soft Tissue Decomposition,Are Taphonomic Studies an Accurate Reflection of Decomposition?,

Abstract:, Although the relationship between decomposition and postmortem interval has been well studied, almost no studies examined the potential effects of physical disturbance occurring as a result of data collection procedures. This study compares physically disturbed rabbit carcasses with a series of undisturbed carcasses to assess the presence and magnitude of any effects resulting from repetitive disturbance. Decomposition was scored using visual assessment of soft tissue changes, and numerical data such as weight loss and carcass temperature were recorded. The effects of disturbance over time on weight loss, carcass temperature, soil pH and decomposition were studied. In addition, this study aimed to validate some of the anecdotal evidence regarding decomposition. Results indicate disturbance significantly inversely affects both weight loss and carcass temperature. No differences were apparent between groups for soil pH change or overall decomposition stage. An insect-mediated mechanism for the disturbance effect is suggested, along with indications as to why this effect may be cancelled when scoring overall decomposition. [source]


The history and composition of the Raymond A. Dart Collection of Human Skeletons at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa

Abstract The Raymond A. Dart Collection of Human Skeletons (Dart Collection) is housed in the School of Anatomical Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and comprises one of the largest documented cadaver-derived human skeletal assemblages in the world. This collection originated in the early 1920s as a result of the efforts of Raymond Dart and continues to grow. The skeletons included represent varied indigenous and immigrant populations from southern Africa, Europe and Asia. This contribution documents the history of the collection and provides an updated inventory and demographic assessment of this valuable research collection. According to a recent inventory the Dart Collection currently comprises 2,605 skeletons representing individuals from regional SA African (76%), White (15%), Coloured (4%) and Indian (0.3%) populations. A large proportion of the skeletons (71%) represent males. The recorded ages at death range from the first year to over 100 years of age, but the majority of individuals died between the ages of 20 and 70. The Dart Collection has been affected by collection procedures based on availability. All of the cadavers collected before 1958, and large proportions subsequently, were derived from unclaimed bodies in regional South African hospitals. Some details of documentation (age at death, population group) are estimates and some aspects of the collection demographics (sex ratios) do not closely reflect any living South African population. Randomised controlled trial of total compared with subtotal hysterectomy with one-year follow up results

Objective To compare total abdominal hysterectomy and subtotal abdominal hysterectomy performed for benign uterine diseases. Design Randomised, controlled, unblinded trial with central, computer-generated randomisation. Setting Danish trial performed in 11 departments of gynaecology. Population Women referred for benign uterine diseases were randomised to total abdominal hysterectomy (n= 158) or subtotal abdominal hysterectomy (n= 161). One-year follow up questionnaires had a response rate of 87%. Methods Patients were followed by strict data collection procedures, including postal questionnaires. The results after one year of follow up were analysed by intention-to-treat analyses. Main outcome measures (1) Primary: urinary incontinence and (2) secondary: post-operative complications, quality of life (SF-36), constipation, prolapse of the vaginal vault/cervical stump, satisfaction with sexual life, pelvic pain and vaginal bleeding. Results A significantly (P= 0.043) smaller proportion of women had urinary incontinence one year after total abdominal hysterectomy compared with subtotal abdominal hysterectomy [9%vs 18% (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.01,4.29)]. The lower proportion of incontinent women in the total abdominal hysterectomy group was a result of a higher proportion of symptom relief (total abdominal hysterectomy: 20/140, subtotal abdominal hysterectomy: 14/136) as well as a lower proportion of women with new symptoms (total abdominal hysterectomy: 3/140, subtotal abdominal hysterectomy: 10/137). Twenty-seven women (20%) from the subtotal abdominal hysterectomy group had vaginal bleeding and two of them had to have their cervix removed. No other clinically important differences were found between the two hysterectomy methods. Conclusions A smaller proportion of women suffered from urinary incontinence after total abdominal hysterectomy than after subtotal abdominal hysterectomy one year post-operatively. [source]
