Selected AbstractsRole of the complement-lectin pathway in anaphylactoid reaction induced with lipopolysaccharide in miceEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF IMMUNOLOGY, Issue 10 2003wierzko Abstract We show that Proteus vulgaris,O25 (PO25) lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced an anaphylactoid reaction not only in wild-type and in lipid,A non-responding mice but also in recombinase-activating gene-2-deficient (RAG-2,/,) and in mast cell-deficient (W/Wv) animals. Western blot analysis indicated that PO25 LPS bound to Ra-reactive factor (RaRF), the complex of mannan-binding lectins (MBL) and MBL-associated serine proteases. Binding of RaRF to PO25 LPS led to the activation of C4 component without participation of either C1 or Ig, via the lectin pathway. Relative concentration of RaRF and hemolytic activity in mouse serum decreased rapidly during the process of anaphylactoid reaction. A significant drop of MBL-A, but not MBL-C level was observed. Administrationwith antiserum to RaRF prevented animals from death as a consequence of the inhibition of interaction of RaRF with the carbohydrate target and complement activation. These results indicate that complement-lectin pathway activation is responsible for the anaphylactoid reaction induced with LPS in muramyldipeptide-primed mice. RaRF also activated fibrinogen in vitro suggesting the involvement of the coagulation system in the process investigated. [source] Does an alteration of dialyzer design and geometry affect biocompatibility parameters?HEMODIALYSIS INTERNATIONAL, Issue 2 2006Karel OPATRNÝ Jr. Abstract The aim of the study was to assess the biocompatibility profile of a newly developed high-flux polysulfone dialyzer type (FX-class dialyzer). The new class of dialyzers incorporates a number of novel design features (including a new membrane) that have been developed specifically in order to enhance the removal of small- and middle-size molecules. The new FX dialyzer series was compared with the classical routinely used high-flux polysulfone F series of dialyzers. In an open prospective, randomized, crossover clinical study, concentrations of the C5a complement component, and leukocyte count in blood and various thrombogenicity parameters were evaluated before, and at 15 and 60 min of hemodialysis at both dialyzer inlet and outlet in 9 long-term hemodialysis patients using the FX60S dialyzers and, after crossover, the classical F60S, while in another 9 patients, the evaluation was made with the dialyzers used in reverse order. The comparison of dialyzers based on evaluation of the group including all procedures with the FX60S and the group including procedures with the F60S did not reveal significant differences in platelet count, activated partial thromboplastin times, plasma heparin levels, platelet factor-4, D-dimer, C5a, and leukocyte count at any point of the collecting period. Both dialyzer types showed a significant increase in the plasma levels of the thrombin-antithrombin III complexes; however, the measured levels were only slightly elevated compared with the upper end of the normal range. Biocompatibility parameters reflecting the behavior of platelets, fibrinolysis, complement activation, and leukopenia do not differ during dialysis with either the FX60S or the F60S despite their large differences in design and geometry features. Although coagulation activation, as evaluated by one of the parameters used, was slightly higher with the FX60S, it was still within the range seen with other highly biocompatible dialyzers and therefore is not indicative of any appreciable activation of the coagulation system. Thus, the incorporation of various performance-enhancing design features into the new FX class of dialyzers does not result in a deterioration of their biocompatibility profile, which is comparable to that of the classical F series of dialyzers. [source] Cholestasis enhances liver ischemia/reperfusion-induced coagulation activation in ratsHEPATOLOGY RESEARCH, Issue 2 2010Jaap J. Kloek Aim:, Cholestasis is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing major liver surgery. An additional risk is induced when vascular inflow occlusion is applied giving rise to liver ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. The role of the coagulation system in this type of injury is elusive. The aim of the current study was to assess activation of coagulation following hepatic I/R injury in cholestatic rats. Methods:, Male Wistar rats were randomized into two groups and subjected to bile duct ligation (BDL) or sham laparotomy. After 7 days, both groups underwent 30 min partial liver ischemia. Animals were sacrificed before ischemia or after 6 h, 24 h, and 48 h reperfusion. Results:, Plasma AST and ALT levels were higher after I/R in cholestatic rats (P < 0.05). Hepatic necrosis, liver wet/dry ratio and neutrophil influx were increased in the BDL group up to 48 h reperfusion (P < 0.05). Liver synthetic function was decreased in the BDL group as reflected by prolonged prothrombin time after 6 h and 24 h reperfusion (P < 0.05). I/R in cholestatic rats resulted in a 12-fold vs. 7-fold (P < 0.01) increase in markers for thrombin generation and a 6-fold vs. 2-fold (P < 0.01) increase in fibrin degradation products (BDL vs. control, respectively). In addition, the cholestatic rats exhibited significantly decreased levels of antithrombin (AT) III and increased levels of the fibrinolytic inhibitor plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) during reperfusion. Conclusions:, Cholestasis significantly enhances I/R-induced hepatic damage and inflammation that concurs with an increased activation of coagulation and fibrinolysis. Adel Msc Summary Background and objectives:, Neonatal sepsis is frequently associated with pathological activation of the coagulation system, leading to microcirculatory derangement and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). The key role in the pathogenesis of sepsis has been attributed to proinflammatory cytokines. These trigger the development of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) via the tissue factor-dependent pathway of coagulation. Pentoxifylline (PTX), a methylxanthine derivative that is used in peripheral vascular disease, has the potential to modify inflammatory response. The current work was designed to evaluate the potential protective effects of PTX against sepsis-induced microcirculatory derangement in Egyptian neonates. Methods:, A double-blind placebo-controlled quasi-randomized design was used. Thirty-seven neonates with sepsis were randomly allocated into two groups. Seventeen patients were given PTX (5 mg/kg/h for 6 h; for 6 successive days). Twenty patients received equivalent volume of normal saline and represented the placebo group. Prothrombin time (PT), Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen, d -dimer, C-reactive protein (CRP), complete blood count (CBC), also hemodynamic parameters comprising arterial blood pressure, heart rate, capillary refill and urinary output were assessed in both groups before and after treatment. Results:, Coagulation parameters in the two groups showed no significant differences. However, a higher incidence of DIC was observed in the placebo group neonates. PTX significantly lowered the percentage of bleeding (P = 0·0128) and less frequent use of FFP was observed in the PTX group (35·53% in PTX group vs. 80% in placebo group, P = 0·003). Incidence of MODS was significantly lower (P = 0·037) and hospital stay duration of survivors was significantly shorter (P = 0·044) in the PTX treated-infants. Conclusion:, Pentoxifylline protects against sepsis-induced microcirculatory derangement in neonates. It significantly lowered the incidence of bleeding and MODS and shortened the length of hospital stay. The formation of the platelet plug provides the initial occlusion of the vascular lesion. This is temporally co-ordinated with the activation of the coagulation system, which occurs in response to the rupture of endothelium and the exposure of blood to the extravascular tissue. The reactions of blood coagulation are carefully controlled by several anticoagulant mechanisms and under normal conditions they prevail over the procoagulant forces. Genetic or acquired disturbances of the natural balance between the pro- and anticoagulant systems may result in bleeding or thrombotic diseases. NILSSON Background: Recombinant human activated protein C (rhAPC) is an anticoagulant that can be used for treatment of patients with severe sepsis. The use of rhAPC is accompanied by an increased risk of severe bleeding. Rotational thromboelastometry is a method for measuring the status of the coagulation. The aim of the study was to investigate whether rotational thromboelastometry could be used for monitoring the effects of rhAPC on the coagulation. Methods: Whole blood was mixed in vitro with concentrations of rhAPC ranging from 0 to 75 ng/ml and analysed with rotational thromboelastometry. Results: The parameter Coagulation Time was significantly prolonged by increasing the concentrations of rhAPC (P=0.002). Other parameters were not significantly affected. Conclusion: rhAPC dose dependently affects the early humoral parts of the coagulation, while platelet function and fibrinogen to fibrin conversion seem virtually unaffected. [source] REVIEW ARTICLE: Hyperglycemia: a prothrombotic factor?JOURNAL OF THROMBOSIS AND HAEMOSTASIS, Issue 8 2010B. A. LEMKES Summary., Diabetes mellitus is characterized by a high risk of atherothrombotic events. What is more, venous thrombosis has also been found to occur more frequently in this patient group. This prothrombotic condition in diabetes is underpinned by laboratory findings of elevated coagulation factors and impaired fibrinolysis. Hyperglycemia plays an important role in the development of these hemostatic abnormalities, as is illustrated by the association with glycemic control and the improvement upon treatment of hyperglycemia. Interestingly, stress induced hyperglycemia, which is often transient, has also been associated with poor outcome in thrombotic disease. Similar laboratory findings suggest a common effect of acute vs. chronic hyperglycemia on the coagulation system. Many mechanisms have been proposed to explain this prothrombotic shift in hyperglycemia, such as a direct effect on gene transcription of coagulation factors caused by hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress, loss of the endothelial glycocalyx layer, which harbours coagulation factors, and direct glycation of coagulation factors, altering their activity. In addition, both chronic and acute hyperglycemia are often accompanied by hyperinsulinemia, which has been shown to have prothrombotic effects as well. In conclusion, the laboratory evidence of the effects of both chronic and acute hyperglycemia suggests a prothrombotic shift. Additionally, hyperglycemia is associated with poor clinical outcome of thrombotic events. Whether intensive treatment of hyperglycemia can prevent hypercoagulability and improve clinical outcome remains to be investigated. SNYDER Summary.,Background:,Tissue factor (TF) is expressed widely at the subluminal surface of blood vessels and serves as the primary cellular initiator of the extrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. Lack of TF in mice resulted in lethality in utero, but human TF (huTF) expressed at low levels from a human minigene rescued null mice from prenatal death. Although these low-TF expressing transgenic mice developed to term, they had a significantly shorter life span and exhibited hemorrhage and fibrosis in the heart. Methods:,Human TF knock-in (TFKI) mice were generated by replacing the first two exons of the mouse (murine) TF (muTF) gene with the huTF complete coding sequence, thus placing it under the control of the endogenous muTF promoter. Results:,Expression of huTF in the TFKI mice was similar to muTF in wild-type (wt) mice. The TFKI mice showed no microscopic evidence of spontaneous hemorrhage in the heart, nor cardiac fibrosis at up to 18 months of age. Immunohistochemistry showed that huTF was expressed in cells surrounding blood vessels in TFKI mice. Coagulation activity of brain homogenates from TFKI mice was comparable with that from wt brain. Cardiac hemorrhage similar to that of the low-TF transgenic mice occurred in the TFKI mice when huTF was blocked by a neutralizing anti-huTF monoclonal antibody. Conclusion:,We generated a transgenic mouse line that expresses huTF under the control of the endogenous muTF promoter at physiological levels. Our results suggest that huTF can fully reconstitute the murine coagulation system and mediate normal hemostasis. [source] Atorvastatin and omega-3 fatty acids protect against activation of the coagulation system in patients with combined hyperlipemiaJOURNAL OF THROMBOSIS AND HAEMOSTASIS, Issue 4 2003A. Nordøy Summary., Activation of factor (F)VII by tissue factor may represent a critical event during plaque rupture in acute coronary syndromes. Patients with combined hyperlipemia are at high risk for developing coronary heart disease and their tendency to thrombosis may be accelerated during postprandial hyperlipemia. In the present double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel study, 42 patients with combined hyperlipemia and serum triglycerides between 2.0 and 15.0 mmol L,1 and serum cholesterol >5.3 mmol L,1 at the end of a 3-month dietary run-in period were treated with atorvastatin at 10 mg day,1 for at least 10 weeks. During the last 5 weeks the patients were randomized into two groups receiving 1.68 g day,1 omega-3 fatty acids (,-3 FA) or placebo (corn oil). The fasting levels of FVII antigen (FVII-Ag) and FVII coagulant activity (FVII:C) were high compared with healthy males. The fasting levels of activated FVII (FVIIa) and FVII-Ag correlated both to serum triglycerides and apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1). FVIIa and FVII:C increased during postprandial hyperlipemia. This increase of FVIIa correlated to the fasting triglyceride and apoA1 levels, but not to the degree of postprandial hypertriglyceridemia. The concentrations of fasting FVIIa in these patients were reduced in parallel with a reduction of fasting triglycerides by treatment with atorvastatin + placebo. This treatment also reduced the postprandial level of FVIIa. ,-3 FA in addition to atorvastatin further reduced FVIIa concentrations, fasting and postprandially, and also significantly reduced FVII:C and FVII-Ag during postprandial hyperlipemia. Prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 (F1 + 2) increased during postprandial hyperlipemia. This increase was significantly reduced after treatment with atorvastatin plus ,-3 FA. The increase of F1 + 2 measured as incremental area under the curve (iAUC) during postprandial hyperlipemia correlated to the fasting levels of FVIIa, FVII:C and FVII-Ag and also to the levels of these factors during postprandial lipemia. In conclusion, patients with combined hyperlipemia are at risk for activation of the coagulation system, particularly during postprandial lipemia. This activation may be significantly reduced by statins and ,-3 FA. Herwald Summary., Invasive and toxic infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes are connected with high morbidity and mortality. Typical symptoms of these infections are hypotension, edema formation, tissue necrosis, and bleeding disorders. Here we report that components of the coagulation system including fibrinogen, factors V, XI, and XII, and H-kininogen, are assembled at the surface of S. pyogenes through specific interactions with bacterial surface proteins. In plasma environment, absorption of fibrinogen by S. pyogenes causes a hypocoagulatory state resulting in prolonged clotting times and impaired fibrin network formation. Moreover, the binding of coagulation factors and the subsequent activation of the coagulation system at the bacterial surface lead to the formation of a fibrin network covering S. pyogenes bacteria adhering to epithelial cells. The results suggest that interactions between S. pyogenes and components of the coagulation system contribute to some of the symptoms seen in severe infections caused by this important human pathogen. Data sources: Original research articles and scientific reviews. Human data synthesis: Organ damage caused by sepsis is created in part by the interdependent relationship between hemostasis and inflammation. Markers of coagulation have been found to have prognostic value in human patients with sepsis and there are both experimental and clinical investigations of the therapeutic potential of modulating the hemostatic system in sepsis. Improvement of 28-day all-cause mortality in severe sepsis by treatment with recombinant human activated Protein C strongly supports the interdependence of hemostasis and inflammation in the pathophysiology of sepsis. Veterinary data synthesis: Publications reporting clinical evaluation of the hemostatic changes occurring in septic dogs or cats are minimal. Experimental animal models of sepsis reveal significant similarity between human and animal sepsis and may provide relevance to clinical veterinary medicine until prospective clinical evaluations are published. Conclusions: It is now apparent that inflammation and the coagulation system are intimately connected. Understanding this relationship provides some insight into the pathogenesis of the hemostatic changes associated with sepsis. This new updated view of hemostasis may lead to the development of novel therapeutic approaches to sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulation in veterinary medicine. [source] Low utilisation of unactivated protein C in a patient with meningococcal septic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulationACTA ANAESTHESIOLOGICA SCANDINAVICA, Issue 7 2003A. Lignell Background:, Activated protein C has recently been shown in a multicentre trial to significantly reduce mortality in patients with septic shock. There are also some case reports and minor studies demonstrating promising results with the unactivated form of protein C. However, in children with severe meningococcal infection, skin biopsies have demonstrated low expression of endothelial thrombomodulin and protein C receptors, suggesting low protein C activation capacity in severe meningococcal sepsis. Methods:, A patient with meningococcal septic shock was treated with two doses of the unactivated form of protein C, the first during intense activation of the coagulation system and the second during a phase of low grade or no activation. Repeated plasma samples were analysed for protein C concentration, which made it possible to compare pharmacokinetics and half-lives of the two administrations. A shorter half-life during intense coagulation was expected if there was an activation and consumption of the protein C administered. Results:, The calculated half-lives of protein C during intense and low grade activation were 32 h and 19 h, respectively, a magnitude similar to that reported in protein C-deficient patients without infection. Conclusion:, The result indicates that whole body utilisation of the unactivated protein C was low. Endothelial impairment of protein C activation does not seem to be restricted to the skin vessels only. The sickle transgenic mouse abnormally expresses tissue factor (TF) on the pulmonary vein endothelium. Knowing that this aberrancy is stimulated by inflammation, we sought to determine whether nitric oxide (NO) contributes to regulation of endothelial TF expression in the sickle mouse model. We used the NY1DD sickle mouse, which exhibits a low-TF to high-TF phenotype switch on exposure to hypoxia/reoxygenation. Manipulations of NO biology, such as breathing NO or addition of arginine or L -NAME (N -nitro- L -arginine-methyl-ester) to the diet, caused significant modulations of TF expression. This was also seen in hBERK1 sickle mice, which have a different genetic background and already have high-TF even at ambient air. Study of NY1DD animals bred to overexpress endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS; eNOS-Tg) or to have an eNOS knockout state (one eNOS,/, animal and several eNOS+/, animals) demonstrated that eNOS modulates endothelial TF expression in vivo by down-regulating it. [source] Thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor activity, thrombin-antithrombin complex and D-dimer levels in preterm neonates with early respiratory distress syndromeAMERICAN JOURNAL OF HEMATOLOGY, Issue 1 2008Tugba Gursoy Intraalveolar fibrin deposition found in neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is explained by the activation of the coagulation system and inefficient fibrinolysis. However, thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor activity (TAFIa), an inhibitor of fibrinolysis, and the ratio of D-dimer to thrombin,antithrombin complex (D-dimer/TAT), an index of fibrinolytic activity, have not been reported previously in neonatal RDS. Aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of plasma TAFIa levels on the fibrinolytic state in neonatal RDS. The RDS group (Group 1) consisted of 29 neonates, and 18 neonates served as the control group (Group 2). Plasma TAFIa levels and D-dimer/TAT ratios were evaluated in all neonates in the first 6 hr of life. Neonates in the RDS group were further divided into two subgroups; Group 1a consisted of 12 neonates with evidence of mild asphyxia (Apgar score at 5 min <7 and cord pH <7.26), and Group 1b consisted of 17 nonasphyxiated neonates. No significant difference was found in TAFIa levels and D-dimer/TAT ratios between Groups 1 and 2 [214% (56.2,361%) and 124.3 (4.4,3,921) in Group 1 and 201% (60.3,381%) and 147 (5.9,1,426) in Group 2]. There were negative correlations between cord pH and TAFIa levels in both groups. Increased TAFIa levels and decreased D-dimer/TAT ratios and platelet counts were detected in mildly asphyxiated neonates when compared with nonasphyxiated ones. TAFIa is not responsible for the hypofibrinolytic state reported in RDS. However, asphyxia influences TAFIa levels and increased TAFIa levels depress fibrinolysis. Am. J. Horne III We studied the blood coagulation system of 14 patients with metastatic malignancies before and after they had undergone major surgery. In addition to measuring a battery of coagulation factors, we assessed the function of the system with assays of whole blood thrombin generation. With the exceptions of factor VIII (fVIII), which increased, and fibrinogen and fIX, which did not change, the activities of all the pro- and anticoagulant proteins were significantly lower postoperatively. However, the thrombin generating capacity of the system was relatively preserved. Although the integral of thrombin activity over time was lower after surgery, the mean peak thrombin concentration was unchanged and the time to clot formation was shortened. Similar changes could be reproduced by lowering the concentrations of pro- and anticoagulant factors together in control blood samples. Therefore, simultaneous reductions in pro- and anticoagulant proteins postoperatively worked to maintain the functional integrity of the blood coagulation system. Am. J. Hematol., 2007. F. Larsen Background: Carbon dioxide pneumoperitoneum may be an important pathophysiological factor stimulating the coagulation system during conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that gasless laparoscopy produces smaller changes in the coagulation and fibrinolytic system than carbon dioxide pneumoperitoneum in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods: Fifty patients were allocated randomly to conventional (n = 26) or gasless (n = 24) laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Blood samples were obtained on admission, after induction of anaesthesia, after insufflation or traction, 30 min after introduction of the laparoscope, 10 min after exsufflation of carbon dioxide or traction, 4 h after extubation and 24 h after operation. Results: The two groups were comparable with respect to age, sex, body mass index and duration of operation. Plasma levels of prothrombin fragment 1 and 2 (F1 + 2), soluble fibrin and d -dimer did not differ between the two groups. F1 + 2 levels varied significantly in both groups during and after operation (P < 0·001). Soluble fibrin and d -dimer levels did not change during operation in either group, but after operation the levels increased significantly in both groups (P < 0·001). Conclusion: Carbon dioxide pneumoperitoneum does not enhance the activation of coagulation and fibrinolysis associated with laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Pohlmann-Eden The antiepileptic drug valproic acid (VPA) induces subclinical changes in both the intrinsic and extrinsic coagulation system. However, fatal bleeding is very rare. This study reports a 39-year-old patient who underwent selective amygdalohippocampectomy because of drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy. Preoperatively, the patient was on a combined therapy with VPA and topiramate, and routine coagulation laboratory parameters were entirely normal. Epilepsy surgery was immediately followed by severe intracranial bleeding events which promped repeated craniectomy. Extensive laboratory analyses revealed a factor XIII activity level of 17%, indicating factor XIII deficiency confirmed by a reduced XIIIA-antigen. After termination of treatment with VPA, factor XIII levels returned to normal. Control examinations after 9 and 24 months showed normal range values for all coagulation parameters, including factor XIII, platelet function, and von Willebrand factor. To our knowledge, this case is the first description of a well-documented, clinically relevant transient factor XIII-deficiency syndrome related to VPA treatment. They can become even more serious if followed by consumption coagulopathy and even life-threatening in cases of Kasabach,Merritt syndrome, with thrombocytopenia and haemorrhage. Data exist concerning systemic coagulation abnormalities in children with haemangiomas but to our knowledge there are no data on local consumption coagulopathy in haemangioma per se. We examined blood coagulation and fibrinolysis parameters in blood withdrawn from haemangioma blood vessels and blood withdrawn from the systemic vein in 14 children with cutaneous haemangiomas (3M, 11F; age range 3 mo to 10 y). Compared with controls, significant decreases in fibrinogen levels, FVII activity, antithrombin and plasmin inhibitor levels and increases in international normalized ratio (INR) and D-dimer levels were observed in the blood samples withdrawn directly from haemangioma blood vessels. Fibrinogen and antithrombin levels in samples withdrawn from systemic veins were reduced in relation to control values whilst INR values increased, but within normal ranges. D-dimer levels were increased in peripheral blood. The fibrinogen level was significantly lower and the INR and D-dimer levels were significantly higher in blood samples from haemangiomas compared to systemic blood. Clinical signs of systemic disseminated intravascular coagulation were not observed. Conclusions: Our results suggest a strong local activation and local consumption coagulopathy in haemangioma, along with less conspicuous but observable systemic changes in coagulation and fibrinolysis parameters, although without signs of consumptive coagulopathy. These systemic changes could be a reflection of intra-lesion coagulation activation although there is no evidence to suggest truly systemic disseminated intravascular coagulation. During severe sepsis and septic shock microthrombi and multiorgan dysfunction are observed as a result of bacterial interference with the host defense and coagulation systems. Objectives:,In the present study, staphylococcal superantigens were tested for their ability to induce procoagulant activity and tissue factor (TF) expression in human whole blood and in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Methods and results:,Determination of clotting time showed that enterotoxin A, B and toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 from S. aureus induce procoagulant activity in whole blood and in mononuclear cells. The procoagulant activity was dependent on the expression of TF in monocytes since antibodies to TF inhibited the effect of the toxins and TF was detected on the surface of monocytes by flow cytometry. In the supernatants from staphylococcal toxin-stimulated mononuclear cells, interleukin (IL)-1, was detected by ELISA. Furthermore, the increased procoagulant activity and TF expression in monocytes induced by the staphylococcal toxins were inhibited in the presence of IL-1 receptor antagonist, a natural inhibitor of IL-1,. The amount of proteins adsorbed onto the CMB copolymers was smaller than that onto other polymers (non-ionic polymers and copolymers of ordinary ionic monomers and BMA) and decreased with an increase in the content of CMB residues. Furthermore, there was a dramatic decrease in the number of cells (platelets and fibroblasts) that adhered to the CMB copolymers compared with that to other polymers. In contrast with this, CMB copolymers were slightly perturbative to both complement and coagulation systems. However, the overall results suggest that zwitterionic moieties are effective for making polymer materials biocompatible due to their excellent anti-biofouling property. [source] |
